You don't need cups unless you want to do printing and since it won't talk to our printer on a print server I don't have it installed.  Also you don't need rpm/yum because all it does is install some necessary DLLs, all of which may already be installed anyway.

What we do need is for the support DLLs to either be included with the package or be provided as a separate package like those for the latest versions of firefox.

While we are talking installers I would like to see something that installs printers - something like the installer they use in elementalOS Linux.  Select new printer, select samba printing, browse for printer, select printer from list, install and it is done.  Picks up network printers as well as local ones without problems.  This is something we need on OS/2 eCS especially if we want to attract more people to our OS.

Per,

If you are already doing what you want using windows, rather than having to leave OS/2 eCS why not do what we do.  When we check the service manuals we produce we need to see how they will look in various windows based programs.  To do this we use a very cut down version of win XP running in VirtualBox on OS/2 (since XP has reached its EoL we are working on making a cut down win 7 to replace it).

I don't know if this is any help but it does mean you can keep on working on your eCS machine.

As far as I know there are very few programs that will let you annotate PDF files on any computer system.  Most of them require Adobe programs to do so.

There are also web based ways of doing this but we have never tried them.

When we have need to modify a PDF we normally revert it back to text and pictures, work on those and then recompile it back to a PDF which I don't think is what you are trying to do.  The other thing is, what type of PDF are you trying to annotate - flowed text or fixed image pages?  If the latter, it is possible to convert the PDF to single page images with something like PDFsam (a java program), annotate the images in something like Embellish and then reassemble the individual images back into a PDF.

Simple answer, no.

There is a port of OpenOffice but it is rather resource hungry and much slower than those native applications.  In fact there are times that I wish my company could afford to employ two or three OS/2 programmers just to be able to get simple up to date native word-processor and spreadsheet programs but I can't see that happening in the near future - the accountant wouldn't allow it because we couldn't justify the cost.

We use Rsync here for backups to our HP Storage System and servers.  It is also used for job tracking between departments and clients.  So another vote for Rsync.

As Doug says you do need to understand what you are doing with it but once you know and have it working it seldom requires looking at because it just works.

If you are using vbox I think it will read standard img files as if they were floppies.

Not knowing if you have a physical install of OS/2 or are using a VM, I can't be specific but will give a general overview.

If you have available an OS/2 or windows computer then go to http://dvalot.free.fr/emtcopy.htm and download the relevant version and install. this will do all that is necessary to extract disk images to either a physical floppy (usb or installed) or a virtual floppy.  For a virtual floppy on OS/2 see the attached vfdisk40.zip (I've attached it because hobbes is down at the moment). The readme gives instructions for use - I am not sure if this will work in a VM, I don't see why not if there is enough memory available but I have never tried it.

If you use a virtual floppy remember to copy the files to disk before you make the next one.

Internet / Re: Firefox for eCS (OS/2) 24.8.1 Beta2 using very high CPU.

Hi Dave,  about:plugins just shows shockwave flash (it is the old version from the days when flash did work v9.0).

Just to see if there was/is anything odd in the systems I have here I replaced the hard disks on the Asus M4A78LT-M with the 4 core AMD Phenom processor with a new 500GB Hitachi disk.  I then installed OS/2 (no eCS here - our clients don't use it) CP2.  With the basic OS/2 running I added the necessary DLLs, the latest ODIN, XWP and warpin.  After adding the set mozilla_home and set moz_plugin_path to config.sys and rebooting I then unzipped firefox-24-8-1 into its own directory

Starting firefox from a command window and going to a known PITA site (Daily Mail) there are spikes on the CPU monitor for each core going to about 80%, exit firefox plugin-container still running evidenced by the command window not opening.

Restart firefox, open about:config and toggle dom.ipc.plugins.enabled to false.  Open daily mail page, a few 30% spikes as page loads and viewing is normal.  Exit firefox, command window opens almost immediately.

For me setting the dom.ipc.plugins.enabled to false works and that is all I ask.  As far as our clients are concerned flash is a potential attack vector on their systems so turning this off is 'a good thing' as far as they are concerned.  For me, if I want to watch a flash something I download it and use VLC.

Hi Dave,

The only plugin on any of these machines is flash - which doesn't work - cloned mozprofile.

I did notice that the flash plugin was set to false but the plugin-container.exe still loaded and swamped the CPU.  With all of the true config options toggled to false there is no problem.

Next week I will let it loose in the office and see what response it gets.

BTW, what is the plugin-container.exe actually for and does it even have a purpose in firefox for OS/2?

Internet / Firefox for eCS (OS/2) 24.8.1 Beta2 using very high CPU.
« on: September 27, 2014, 03:25:16 pm »
The latest firefox has the same problem as the previous version, namely very high CPU usage and plugin-container.exe tending to stay open even when firefox is closed.

It did this on my 4 core and 6 core processor machines as well as our dual 6 core processor test server, pushing CPU usage to well over 90% on all cores.

Note I said DID, it now behaves itself and is working as I expect it to for the last 7 hours.

To fix this problem you need to go to about:config and look for dom.ipc.plugins.enabled and toggle true to false - you can also toggle any other true statements in that dom.ipc group to false.

Since firefox 17 also uses plugin-container.exe this fix should work for those versions as well.

Hardware / Re: eCS and 3 inch CD drives?
« on: September 26, 2014, 09:52:25 pm »
As Andy and Doug say they fit in the centre depression of a standard CD/DVD drive.  I have 7 ot 8 of them here that came with various bits of equipment - 28" monitor, a couple of custom computer cases and so on and since they have the equipment manuals on them I keep them for reference.

There may be a few other files that need changing if you are using the SMP kernel - testcfg, resource and *.psd come to mind.

Well done Sigurd!  I know exactly how you feel having been there in 2002 when I produced a bootable CD using CD Boot/2 by Roman Stangl.

Now you have the general idea of what is needed you should find finishing your DVD is a simple matter.

Since OS2CSM.BIN does not appear on any of my CD/DVDs I have to ask where did you get it from and what is it supposed to do?

You could also try removing it and see if that allows you to book from the CD/DVD.

Hi Sigurd,

Could you post a list of the files in your bootdisk.pf?  There has to be either something missing or something causing a conflict.  Also did you unpack the memdisk from the iso Walking_X made and compared it with what you have?

Hi Sigurd,

You use Packfile.exe <script-file-name> to make a .pf file.

Read the packfile.txt in the memboot\doc dir to get an idea about how to create the needed script file.  Don't forget to add the pointer to the next .pf file if you are using more than one.
