Hi All,
I know that Gimp is something that OS/2 users have often asked about. Gimp relies on the GTK+ toolkit, which is not available on OS/2, and would require significant effort (similar to if not more than the Qt4 toolkit) to be ported natively to the OS/2 api.
I had an idea last night, that it may be possible to compile the GTK+ toolkit using Odin, then compile Gimp. This would still provide a native OS2 executable, just parts of it would use the win32 api via Odin.
How do people feel about this?
At the moment this is just a thought that I will probably explore. No commitment on how long it may take or if it will ever see the light of day.
Cheers,
Paul

If it was possible, it would be really great! If I understand you right this would also mean no dependence on Hoblink X (or x11? can't remember) ?
-
I will love it if we can have Gimp 2.8.2 no matter if it is complete native or running on Odin.
I will lean to say it will be better to have GTK+ ported to eCS-OS/2, but Odin is behaving so nice with OpenJDK, that I would not care.
Also, if there is a chance to open the doors to a GTK+ running on eCS, I will have a better chance my other favorite GTK tools are InkScape and Pidgin get ported someday :)

Correct. The only dependency would be an installed odin.

I understand people would prefer a native port of GTK+, but at this stage of OS2's lifecycle, I'd say the chances of this ever happening are low.
-
I should probably move this to the programming forum, but as I've started here, I will post progress here.
- odin built locally, so I now have all the necessary libraries and headers (I hope) to use the win32 api's
- compiling glib from netlabs as I write.
Next steps will be to grab some more of the required libs for gtk+ and start building them. Will be strange building things like cairo and forcing them to use win32 api's :)

I think its a great idea, but Windows uses also GTK+, so what is the difference?

The GTK+ code has an implementation using the win32 api. That *should* be able to be built with odin. We'd then have a GTK+ toolkit that works on OS/2 via Odin.
Note: this may also be a viable way to get wxwidgets on OS/2 ;)

Well I'll probably try compiling it today :)

It should open a window with a gradient pattern in it.
It's possible it needs a new gdi32.dll - refer http://svn.netlabs.org/odin32/ticket/92 for the details on why

All prequisities met for GTK+ configure:
GTK+ 3.6.2
===========
GDK backends: win32
Print backends: file lpr cups
Dynamic modules: no
Included immodules: none
PackageKit support: yes
colord support: no
Introspection: no
Debugging: minimum
Documentation: no

Most of the GDK folder is building. There is some device stuff for tablets that I need to work out how to compile enough of it to satisfy GDK, as Odin has no support for tablets (and neither does OS/2). I may need to stub some functions just to keep it happy.
The gdk/tests are breaking with link errors - most of these are functions that are present in Odin, but GDK is looking for the wrong symbol name - possibly due to Odin header issues; some is bound to be functions that are missing in Odin and will either need to be stubbed or implemented.
Some are also missing symbols from the win32 port of glib, so seems I need to compile glib using Odin, which I've started
Will keep posting updates are and when there is something worth reporting!

No, I get the tabpage with settings, whatever I do. Installed latest Odin, tried some Java 1.6 programs, that works, so Odin works.
-
Great, Paul!
Do not miss the new year ;) and all the bests for you and your family so to all the OS/2 - eCS users!

Yes, this is great and exiting. There are several interesting win programs that nearly works "out of the box" with Odin. Some years ago a version of Audacity was usable for editing sound files, however no sound. Also Abbyword is "nearly working". Would a port through Odin be a more "easy" way to make such programs work?
FEEDBACK: The gradient works fine here.

It will take time for things with sound because we can't adjust the volume, everything I play through Java is distorted severely, recording isn't implemented in Odin. So Audacity is one of the things on the list.

Do you have chkdll32 installed? try running it against the executable to see what DLL's it's using and what you are potentially missing

We're not big on the whole New Year thing. Partially as it's my wife's mother's birthday on New Years Day, so we don't want to be wasted for that :) Particularly as she is 80 today :)

Glad the gradient works for you :) It's just a simple test, but at least showed cairo-win32 was working ok :)
Whether it's a port of using pe2lx of whatever its called, the same functions are going to get called. The benefit of a port, is that sections of the code can be changed to use OS/2 api's instead of (or as well as) win32 api's.
It's kinda fun messing around with this, which is the whole reason I do ports at all :)

ftp://ftp.boulder.ibm.com/software/visualagecpp/tools/misc/os2/chkdll32.exe
Ah, something left, not all deleted there ;D
After some try and error I get this;
Loading DLL 'GDI32' --> I:\ODIN\SYSTEM32\GDI32.DLL.
Unable to load procedure from GDI32 (file: I:\ODIN\SYSTEM32\GDI32.DLL)
Ordinal entry 259 could not be resolved.
DosQueryProcAddr returned: 182
and
Loading DLL 'libxml2' --> NOT loaded!
Unable to load DLL 'libxml2'. DosLoadModule returned: 2
OS/2 reports 'LIBXML2' contributed to the failure.
Unbelievable what's needed, the list is almost endless. But I can't make anything from the two above. I did try this with Odin 0.7.1 and I got the same messages, so I switched to Odin 0.8.8, same output. Now the strange part.
Why can you run with some others run the program and I can't. Or I installed a wrong "Lib", I know there was a time that some were not okay, or there is still some missing in my path statements, but be honest, if so that would be weird.
All other system32\*.dll from Odin are found and loaded, so no problem with path or libpath. The "libxm12" doesn't ring a bell with me.

The gdi32 is the extra function I implemented. This one may not be fatal - hence it works for others.
libxml2 is the bigger issue here. I normally statically link this, but I've been messing around with a DLL to try and fix a PHP issue. You can find a copy that should work (from rpm) at http://smedley.id.au/libxml2.zip If people have rpm installed, they will have this DLL hence it may work for them.

Thanks Paul, best wishes. Downloaded the zip and parked the file in de system32 directory from Odin. I did fire your cairo-gdi-demo.exe and I get a small window in grey with a sphere object in it. So, you were right that the gdi32 was not fatal and that the big issue was solved with the zip. Why that's available in rpm and not in the Odin-zip is beyond me.

It falls back on DART if uniaud isn't available. See kai_dart.c and kai_dart.h. DART is part of MMOS2 so there won't be any DLLs

libxml2 has nothing to do with odin... it's used by cairo....
-
Uggh - just checked http://www.gimp.org/source/#requirements and see that it lists as a minimum:
GTK+ 2.24.10 or newer
I had started with latest GTK+ (3.x).
Will most likely revert to GTK+ 2.x for now in the hope it's dependencies will be lower :)

Status update:
- Cairo 1.12.8 built for Odin
- glib 2.33.12 built for Odin
- GTK+ 2.24.5 nearly built for Odin ( a few unresolved symbols to go)
My current diffs for Odin are at http://smedley.id.au/gtk-odin-svn-20130102.diff
Most of this has involved fixing header issues - many functions are implemented in the Odin DLL's but not present in the headers files used to compile windows applications. I hope to get all this tidied up and committed to the Odin32 SVN repository.
I will hopefully get GTK+ to finish building tonight or tomorrow. 40C here tomorrow, so not much else to do :)
-
Hello Paul,
thanks for your efforts. To get the right understanding of your port: What is the intention to port glib once more (there is a glib 2.33.12 in http://svn.netlabs.org/ports already) ?

The win32 port of GTK+ uses some symbols from glib that are only present in the win32 port of glib, so I had to recompile glib using the odin libraries.

Well gtk+ examples build now. But two of them give a SIGSEGV in libc065, others with the dreaded SYS1808 'the process has stopped' error which gives no clue as to what has caused it to not work :/
Will post more when I work out wtf is happening.

ok no more SYS1808, but still the libc exception. I made a GTK2245.DLL - all the test executables crash with:

Steven Levine helped me with this one. Getting other SIGSEGV now but working through them...

Sometimes I think mr. Levine can read and understand these error messages easier than I can my 10 year old sons schoolbooks:-)
Keep us posted on the developments. A working GTK will certainly make a lot of software ports possible!

Hi Paul, what is your recipe for compiling odinized cairo? Which freetype, fontconfig etc are you using and how do you run configure?
-
Hi Dave,
Hi Paul, what is your recipe for compiling odinized cairo? Which freetype, fontconfig etc are you using and how do you run configure?
I'm using the same freetype and fontconfig as I would normally use.
I've created a special gcc446.cmd for odin, with a modified config.site to along with it.
Primarily, these add some defines to cflags - ie -D__WIN32OS2__ -D_WIN32 - the former to satisfy some odin headers, the latter to trick some configure scripts into thinking it's win32. They also add the odin32 libs to the library path ahead of my normal library path.
To configure win32 cairo, I'm using:
set LIBS=-lkernel32 -luser32
ash ./configure --prefix=/odin32 --enable-win32=yes --enable-os2=no --disable-shared --enable-static 2>&1 | tee configure.log
Hope this helps,
Paul

Hi All,
Not a whole lot to report this week. I've had a ghastly week at work, so not a lot of time to work on much OS/2 related.
I do have a simple 'hello world' compiling, but I get a SIGSEGV trying to run it.
I added exceptq support to the helloworld test, output is at http://smedley.id.au/2e07_01.trp just need to decipher it now :)
Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Paul,
OT: Is it really possible to work at all with the terrible heat that seems to be all over Australia? I heard that the temperature would rise up to 55 Celsius the nearest days...

I could say the same about europe where it gets to minus whatever it is :)
The hottest day we've had here in Adelaide this summer was 45C last Friday. Fortunately, we were still on vacation then :)
At my employer, for the factory workers, when the temperature is above 35C, they get 10 minutes of heat relief per hour. If it's over 40C, it's 15 minutes per hour. There is of course, some cooling in the plant :)
55C would only be in central Australia which is mostly desert.
-
I guess you're right.. In Sweden I think that temperatures above 35 C would entail no work at all. On the other side construction workers continues their work even if it is -20 C. In an article I read that the authorities suggest a micro pause once in a while and an employee says: "sometime you just have to go in to thaw out (right expression?) your face and hands". In a comment a man says: "My father was in the military service on Gotland during the war, he was out in minus 40-45 C and I never heard him complain. What has happened to the Swedish people who whines for the slightest discomfort" :)
-
Paul, I know you have to put a lot of time into an issue like this and I'm sure I would be willing to pay some for use of this program under OS/2 - eCS 2. I would even put money up in advance, just like a number of us put in money for the Hobbes, and the new OS/2 World setup.

So would I.
Just don't know to whom and Where to pay to.

Safest way to me would be for the os2world guys to get the bounty system back up and running. There was a previous bounty for a port of GTK.
I personally would not be comfortable asking for money in advance to do this work, largely as there's no guarantee that it will ever be completed. (ie I may hit obstacles that I cannot overcome).
If people want to support my efforts, with no commitment to getting the port working, they can do so via the links on my site.
Cheers,
Paul

No news. Since going back to work in early January, things have been absolutely flat out, leaving little to no time for anything OS/2 related. I have reinstated the diff you mention above onto my site, I must have been a little over zealous cleaning things up :)

I am hoping to be able to be able to build isomaster (allows manipulating ISO files, adding/removing files) but it is GTK based. The library that does the ISO work builds fine on OS/2 but no GUI to make use of it. So I was wondering if things had slowed down enough to have a chance to make any progress?
-
Hi Andy
Would the isomaster ISO library work with a gui developed in WDSibyl - http://wdsibyl.org/ - or does it need the gtk gui?

It should work with any GUI developed for it... the trick is developing the GUI. The library itself is standalone so is not dependent on GTK, but if GTK is available it is just a matter of building it as opposed to having to build the whole thing from scratch. I have considered trying to create a GUI for it in with dwindows but it is a bit beyond my abilities at the present time.

Nope, no slow down yet. I do have a 2 week vacation coming up due to a plant closedown - so perhaps in the second week of April I'll have some more time to try and get GTK functional.

OK, Paul.
Thanks again for your efforts.
-
Hi all, we often forget odin, I believe that while we are waiting for the Paul's efforts we can survive very well using Photofilter ( http://photofiltre.free.fr/ ), one of the few win programs that runs quite well on eCS.
Download the zip package, unzip in a folder, add plugins you prefer and simply pe.exe photofilter.exe.
It will not Gimp but it seems a lot, believe me ;-) !!
-
Thanks for that link, Barbara.
But there are graphics programs for OS/2 of note... just nothing as powerful as GIMP.
- Embellish
- PhotoTiger
- Photo>Graphics
- ColorWorks/2
- DrawIt
- Galleria
- Impos/2
- BlueCAD
- Neon
- QueenCy
and others.
Just in case you did not already know.
I'll give PhotoFilter a try now and see how that holds up!
8)
-
Sure, I know all of them, and they are not like to Gimp, true, but it was just to not feel the lack of Gimp, the toolbar icons as I seem comes from Gimp! anyway here goes quite well using latest odin.
-
I do 98% of my work with the combination of Embellish and PMView Pro.
-
Personally, I would add to my list Photo>Graphics.
ColorWorks/2 went out the window due to some problem with the graphics drivers for OS/2. Everything is out of line when you enlarge or reduce an image.
Too bad though, it offered some great power with Masks that nothing else in OS/2 graphics software has replaced. 8|
-
https://pixlr.com/ works well with the latest GA Flash. Of course it can't do everything Gimp will do, but it will handle basic tasks, filters, and more.
-
Are there any news?
-
Hi Jochen.
Sorry if it is redundant, there haven't been any progress on this subject. I follow the news and Gimp is on my wishlist for OS/2-eCS and I haven't see any more news about this effort.
Regards.

Hey Guys,
Sorry if it is redundant, there haven't been any progress on this subject. I follow the news and Gimp is on my wishlist for OS/2-eCS and I haven't see any more news about this effort.
Unfortunately there is no progress. Whilst I still do what I can do support OS/2, the reality is that with the demands of my day job, my available free time is very limited these days....

Hi Paul.
I thought so much. I know that problem ;)
But since I'm in porting mode at the moment and already took a look at the GTK infrastructure, I would give it a shot.
Can you send me a package of your progress? I will at least try to take a look at it. Perhaps together we get some progress.

Does anybody know the status of this project? Could GIMP be built using any recent advancements / ports that are available in 2017?
I've been able to get GIMP built from sources in Linux, but have never tried in another OS. I have C/C++ development skills, so if there is some code that someone knows is preventing it from moving forward, I could help.

Gimp is linked against X. The problems are, our X server hasn't had any love in many years. It was built with EMX and non-trivial to port to kLIBC due to it using the EMX select() (needed for pipe support, can use TCP/IP) and also some EMX internals. Some of us do have HOBX as an X server, here it only runs on Warp V4 and complains about not being licensed for eCS, others who bought eCS 1.x do have it working.
X86sup.sys also needs updating to interface with the newest kernels, missing functionality includes PTTY's being broken and a couple of other things that I forget. I did manage to install X on eCS 2.1 using the XVNC server, which allowed GIMP to run in a VNC window here. Xterms were broken due to missing functionality in x86sup.sys as mentioned. (source is available)
At one point I did build the X libraries with kLIBC (they're on the Netlabs FTP server) which allowed building with newer GCC and using LIBPATHSTRICT, and using the full IP address (to avoid pipes) to display on native X.
Starting with those libraries or porting newer ones would allow building with newer ports but still need an Xserver.
I have no idea of how well newer Xorg would build on OS/2. We used the xmakefile process that they ripped out and replaced with autotools.
So basically need a working Xserver, probably newer X libraries and then porting would hopefully be trivial as we have most other libraries already ported.
At one point we even had QT, Gnome, most window managers and even Mozilla running on X, and our Xserver could even load the native Linux ELF modules to have fully accelerated video under X which ran on its own desktop in a full screen session.
If you're interested, I'll help how ever I can.

I had had hopes that everblue would come to fruition:

Is there any interest in creating a graphics app that is not GIMP, but is GIMP-like?

If I wrote the general framework in Presentation Manager, created the thread model, got the base set of tools working with skeleton windows, icons, toolbars, some base load and save algorithms, and created the internal model for representing images for display, layers, selection, undo, etc., would anyone else be interested in continuing development after that?
I would be available to help with anything needed, but most of the algorithms that I'd be able to help with could be found in the GIMP source code. I do have some models for features I would've liked to see added to GIMP: Replication layer array (https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list/2016-December/msg00226.html), and Find and Replace (https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list/2016-December/msg00114.html), and I have a half dozen other good ideas.
One is for anti-aliased merging, and the ability to take fringe pixels and blend them in more smoothly to pasted layers so that content taken from a white background merges onto a dark background without visible artifacts, and vice-versa.

I did a little work on this tonight. I was able to get the Layers window, Toolbar window, and main image window visible in Watcom OS/2. It would be doable if anyone's interested. It would be called Imagine. ;)
