Applications / Re: My experience with ArcaOS & problems I've faced etc.

No need to go to all that trouble if you had selected samba client during setup (I think it is the default).

If you look in the network folder that looks like the old IBM internet one you should find an icon labelled 'ArcaMapper Connections', double click on that  and click on 'Network neighbourhood', click on the refresh button and if you are connected to a network with Samba servers on it they should show up.  Select the one you want and connect as necessary.

Until such time as those looking and updating the USB stack manage to update the usbkbd.sys to enable non standard keycodes extra keys on usb keyboards will never work, in fact you will never see the keycodes.

There is a linux program that was developed to get that information to allow the extra keys and functions (lights on the keys) to be used with the Corsair K95 gaming keyboard on linux.  I have a copy of it and the other tools if anyone is interested.

Hi Neil,

If you have to use a USB adapter  then as far as I know there is no way that you can use the extra keys.  I have 4 USB keyboards with extra keys that work as standard keyboards without problems but the extra keys are dead.

On the other hand if you can use it as a PS/2 keyboard plugged into a PS/2 socket then you can use the WIN95KEY software - it even allows assigning functions to special keys.  I have a Logitech multimedia PS/2 keyboard plugged nto a PS/2 socket with all the keys operational and assigned to such programs as PMMail Firefox PMseek and so on.

I just tried that keyboard with a USB adapter (don't know the brand but it looks like the one you show) and the extra keys are not available.  I seem to remember Lars daying something about the USB keyboard driver not having the extra keys function in it.

Thanks Martin.

I hope they have many testers with a wide range of new motherboards including those with AMD Ryzen processors otherwise he is likely wasting his time.

Pete, are you thinking about the Intel Speedstep Fix?  If so that came out in FP14 for warp4.

We never looked at anything for Intel processors, we were always AMD or other non Intel processors from the start.

Fixpaks for warp 4 and 4.5 are still available at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/  you just have to drill down to what you want.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the information but I do see a potential problem.  If you don't have Linux on the same machine you will need a live Linux DVD and a USB drive for the recovered files (I assume it will work with a live Linux DVD) otherwise it means removing the HD and inserting it into a Linux box.

Utilities / Air Boot problems
« on: September 07, 2018, 04:12:45 pm »
Yesterday I got a new Samsung S24E650XW monitor (16:10) to replace an old 17" unit.  Today I discovered that it does not like the AirBoot selection screen. All the monitor displays is a message that the video is out of range of 1920x1200. Air Boot still works but it is pot luck on which OS starts when I hit enter (depends on time).

I know that AirBoot interface is rather rudimentary (rather like the very old DOS games) and the monitor is set to auto screen resolution and will display lower resolutions than the optimum 1920x1200 but AirBoot has one that is too low to display.

As a test I borrowed a friends Philips 223V5L (16:9) and it is not happy with the AirBoot interface and give a rather distorted rendition, the monitor is 1920x1080 optimum but will auto range down.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

Since you got the unable to operate your hard disk error I assume you did not add the set copyfromfloppy=1 to the config.sys on disk 1.

The other thing to try is to rename Dani1s506 to ibm1s506 - we did that before using set copyfromfloppy=1 was known about.

Edit:  I forgot to mention TRAP 0005 - BOUND RANGE EXCEEDED: A Bound instruction exceeded the specified limits

Experience with chkdsk problems on JFS formatted partitions is when they throw up the 'can't continue' fault the only option is the reformat and restore from backup.

For some reason there doesn't appear to be a robust way of recovering anything from a JFS partition if the meta-data is corrupted.

Hi Pete,

We shouldn't hijack this thread but... The main problem is these USB 3.0 PCIe cards are maintaining their value, I have seen some StarTech ones second hand on ebay where the are asking more than new.  People want them for the same reason that I do - on new motherboards you can't even install win 7 unless you go to a lot of trouble and slipstream the USB 3.0/3.1 drivers into boot section of the ISO because without them there is no keyboard or mouse until the drivers get loaded and you have to have the OS up and running to install the drivers (catch 22 anyone?).

Hi Pete,

The price I gave was from Amazon for a StarTech 7 port PCIe card  The one you pointed to is a PCI card and non of the AM$ Ryzen boards have PCI slots only PCIe.

I have a couple of USB 2.0 PCI cards from old computers and so far haven't found a way of getting a PCI to PCIe adapter with a PCI card into a low profile case.

Hi Pete,

I do know about the Asus Prime range of AM4 Ryzen boards, thanks.  In fact I have a couple of them up and running almost, just need the USB 3.0 and 3.1 drivers.  There are other boards (manufacturers) that have gone over to USB 3.0 only that I could be interested in (built gaming systems for friends using them), I can even get ArcaOS to boot if I use a disk with it already installed on but can't do anything - no keyboard or mouse.  I know I can use a VIA based USB 2.0 add in card but at €73 a pop, no thanks.

Hi Martin,

The burning question which I don't know which section it would fit is:  when are we likely to see a working USB 3.0 / 3.1 driver?

It is becoming almost impossible to use a modern motherboard because they are using USB 3.0 for keyboard and mouse connectors now ps/2 appears to be long gone.

Paul,

International shipping isn't that expensive although that does depend on weight and destination. I have shipped things from Perpignan to Australia and found the biggest problem was the customs paperwork but that might not be a problem for you because the books are used.

It might be a good idea for you to have a look on the Chronopost web page - their help section is good.
