Title: A tool to setup LAN server on ArcaOS...
Post by: Roderick Klein on February 27, 2018, 12:19:11 am
A few people where asking me how to setup an OS/2 LAN server on top of ArcaOS.
Since I wanted to have a server with OS/2 at home running again.
The VOICE foundation released this tool:
http://articles.os2voice.org/category/software/15-lan-server-installation-utility.html
Its under a public open source license.

Note you need to have a CD with the LAN server to install LAN server on top of ArcaOS.

Best regards,

Its ... under a public open source license.

It seems some words were missing here. Which parts of it are under which public licence? In fact the mentioned program developed with Watcom VX-REXX is freeware that ships without any source code.

So why not simply write:
"Its source code (avalable at http://trac.netlabs.org/vxapps/browser/projects/servinst/trunk) is under the Mozilla Public License, v. 2.0 (https://mozilla.org/MPL/2.0/)." - at least in North America...

Unfortunately that's not true. The included README file makes a different statement:

"By default, this program looks for the IBM LAN Server install image on
the specified CD-ROM drive, under the directory \CID\SERVER\IBMLS.

You can also use this program to install LAN Server from a CID server or
local disk."

To unravel the unsustainable claims by Mr. Roderick:
1. The LAN Server (Advanced) CD has not the required directory structure.
2. It cannot be used directly. CID server preparation is required additionally.
3. The Server CD of Warp Server (Advanced or for e-business) can be used out of the box instead.

Hi

I'm more relaxed, instead of calling it "unsustainable claims" I understand that it was a quick post letting us know that the software is available.

Thanks Roderick for letting us know about this program.  Here it is my wiki entry: LAN Server Installation Utility (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/LAN_Server_Installation_Utility).

Regards

Thanks to Alex Taylor for making the utility and releasing it.  I have used it twice over the years to install the Warp Server for E Business sever stuff on eComStation; the last time on eComStation 2.2 Beta (ArcaOS wasn't out yet.)

And thanks Roderick for getting the app posted and notifying us.

My notes from my install are:

eComStation 2.2 beta install hangs if "File and Print Sharing" is not selected during the install.

So install with File and Printer Sharing selected. Then after
the installation is complete, run c:\ibmlan\install\laninst.exe,
select the Tailored option, and remove the LAN Services. LEAVE
MPTS on the machine.

Reboot and make sure C:\IBMLAN and C:\MUGLIB are gone.

Then start SERVINST.EXE from the zipped file  (I assume that is still the name of the server install program.)

This install tool is very nice.  I used the ArcaOS 5.0.2 new iso mount feature to mount the WSEB iso image to a drive letter.  The LAN server install is now very easy.  This is great!

Oke but it you used it on ArcaOS, let me know. I know Alex did some updates to the tool.
