Title: USB pendrive on OS2 4.52 VBox guest
Post by: mauro on December 07, 2018, 08:49:26 pm
Good evening all, I have installed USB 11.17 and fat32-5_0_0 drivers on the system in the subject, believing that it was enough to make at least my 8 Gb usb stick fat 32 formatted being recognized/read as connected.
But it is not, like no other usb connected peripheral device is.
I have tried both settings selections in VBox guest config: USB 1.1 OHCI and USB 2.0 EHCI (thinking was useless trying with USB 3.0 as well) with no success.
I can correctly select and connect the usb device listed in the Device Menu of Vbox menubar while the guest machine is running, but then it results not connected in OS2.
This is what appears in the OS2 Hardware Manager :

Does anyone has experience with this  ?
Thank you all

USB is a bit tricky. Depends on what motherboard you have. There are more ports on your motherboard and it greatly depends what number they have.
I use this:
REM ** Werkende opzet op 14-08-2005 (Poort georienteerd) **
BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:6

I use USB sticks, with ArcaOS, or eCS, in VBox under win 10. I know that Linux, and Apple, hosts complicate using things like that (I think you need special permissions). You need to read the VBox instructions, for whatever your host operating system is.

With win 10 as host, all you need to do, is install the USB drivers, AND, the OS/2 extensions (essential), in the guest. The easiest way to use it, is to mount the device in windows, then enable it to be used by VBox (the USB icon, at the bottom of the VBox window). That device is then only available to the guest in VBox, until you unmount (eject) it. Then, it isn't attached to the host, or the guest, until you physically disconnect it, and connect it again. Some experimenting will likely be required, to figure out how to use that feature.

thank you, I've added that line in my config.sys, but is causing this at system startup:

(https://i.postimg.cc/fJsQKyzS/line-add.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/fJsQKyzS)

and I still cannot open the usb volume.  What was in D before -Vbox ide secondary master for DVD or ISO image- now shifts to E (was the Vbox shared folder before),  and trying to open D returns that error code.  No more shared folder then.
It's a mess.
Should be due to wrong the device number

Yes Doug, I have same Win 10 host and perform same actions to connect-disconnect the usb volume from host to guest and viceversa.  But I'm missing the OS2 Essentials, can you tell were to get it?
Thank you

They come with VBOX, as a virtual CD, it automatically shows up the  first time you install the program and the image can also be found in x:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox, the oracle proprietary extension package also needs to be installed for the USB pass through to work

No he meant the OS/2 integration drivers included on the ISO, the extensions pack is another prerequisite that I added just to be sure. If you have both installed and are running Win 10 you should be OK.

OK, I misunderstood, but need further help if I can ask for it.
-If I go to x:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox I don't recognize anything usefull except for the folder ExtensionPacks whick contains directories with the name of other OS, none about OS2.
- if I go to the link https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch01.html#intro-installing I read references to the Extension Pack which, again, is same I already have.

So, I'm sure missing one or more step to get to the point.
Thank you

If you go to "Devices" in the VBox menu and choose "Optical Drive" and then "choose disk image" and point the folder to x:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox you will see an ISO file called "VBoxGuestAdditions.iso". The ISO contains a folder called OS/2 that includes drivers and a redme that explains (somewhat tersely) how to install them, it may be a misunderstanding and you may already have installed these, but they are not the same as the Extension pack, they are drivers that allow OS/2 (the Client) to interact better with VBox, while the Extension pack is something that allows VBox to interact better with Windows (the Host).

The Extension Pack is a prerequisite for USB pass-through, while the Guest Additions generally make using OS/2 on VBox smoother. If I understand you correctly you have the former installed but not the latter?

Thank you Olafur, so it just was the "Virtual Box Guest Additions". Sorry but I was looking for something else since this definition was a little bit hidden in this thread.
I already have installed the Valery Sedletski advanced Vbox guest additions (see topic https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,1905.0.html (https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,1905.0.html)) and they work

don't know any other misterious reason why the USB volume could not be read from my OS2 Vbox installation.

Maybe ifs G.A. module conflicting with the FAT 32 driver? Just trying to guess...

Is the USB stick properly prepared for use with OS/2? It needs to have a partition created (by OS/2), then it needs to be formatted with a file system that OS/2 knows about. If it was created by windows, it won't work if it is larger than 2 GB, unless you are using Lars' USB drivers, which fudge the partition stuff for OS/2 (I am not convinced that that is a good idea, but it seems to work).

Does it work in a real OS/2 system? Boot the installer (on the real system), go to the System Management thing, and see what the tools think of the stick.

Hi

My suggestions are:

1) Check that the USB device is being recognize on the OS/2 VBOX guest. Check it with a mouse, keyboard, or an USB flash drive.  Maybe you can use lsusb (https://ecsoft2.org/it/system/files/repository/lsusb-20130526_0.zip) (usb.ids (http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids) and some gcc libraries are required to run it)

With that you will be sure that the USB devices are being mounted correctly to the virtual guest.

2) Prepare the USB stick to be recognized by OS/2 (like Doug says). There is some documentation like:
- Prepare the FAT32 USB Flash Drive (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Prepare_the_FAT32_USB_Flash_Drive)
- Formatting USB Drive for OS/2 (http://www.myrkraverk.com/blog/2018/11/formatting-usb-drive-for-os-2/)

I hope it helps

Regards

Hi Doug, I have not prepared anything for OS2, believing that the sufficient requisite were Fat32 fs driver and the USB driver installed. Apart of it, if you see the picture in the first post, it seems like the USB devices have the driver ready but no device is connected/ready to work as no irq/dma address appear associated with.  Lars'USB drivers "fudge the partition stuff" is something that I cannot fully translate. If it means that something else is not going to work anymore or preventing other system funcionality, then I would prefer not to try that.
I've no physical OS2 system available.

Thank you

Hi mauro,
  The 2 screen grabs are from my workstation with OS/2 - not a vbox install.

In the logical view the USB stick appears as Phys D7 and shows the drive letter y:
The physical view shows the same stick as STORE N GO with the drive letter Y: and FAT 32

Since you don't seem able to see any USB sticks I think that your problem might well be that you haven't given it any LVM information and/or the stick isn't formatted fat32 or hpfs or jfs those being the only formats that os/2 understands.  You can check the LVM information, or lack of it, using DFSee.  DFSee will also add the missing LVM information if it isn't there and is also able to format the USB stick as fat32.

Out of curiosity, why don't you use the 'attachments and other options' available here to post your screen shots?  It saves having to go to another site and then return back here.

Hi Ivan, i take your suggestion for Attachements and other options.  Have also have installed DFsee.
Here you find what DFsee shows, again LVMgui with both physical/logical volume display, my USB stick infoes taken in Win 10, the Resources Manager display in OS2 Warp 4.52 (Vbox guest system), the VBox USB connected Menu . Everything tells that no USB device is being detected although it is connected in Vbox filter.

Bad assumption. You must prepare the stick for use with OS/2, but you need to get it mounted first. If OS/2 can't understand the file system, it should still mount the device, but it will complain that it needs to be formatted.

From what you say here, I think you have installed the extensions pack in VBox, but you haven't installed them in the OS/2 guest. Open the guest, then click (in the VBox menu) Devices-> Insert Guest additions CD image (the bottom option - nothing will be apparent). Now use the Drives object to open the CD drive. One of the directories is called "OS/2" Open that. READ Readme.txt, and follow the instructions. HOWEVER, if you have installed the LIBC support, in any other way, DO NOT overwrite any of those files with the ones from the CD. The files on the CD image are old. Reboot, and you should see the extensions load from Startup.CMD. Then, you should be able to mount the USB device.

Well with BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS remmed out, you're never going to read a USB stick.
I'd suggest downloading and installing Lars's drivers from Hobbes, read the README twice, and going with them. They're quite good, the price is right and they handle large sticks mostly fine so you don't have to screw around with partitioning and adding LVM info.
I believe these are the latest, http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/drivers/misc/usbdrv225.zip (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/drivers/misc/usbdrv225.zip)
Don't have much experience with VBox, so can't help with that but I guess your 4.52 install picked UHCD so it's correct and if not, a simple editing of the config.sys will fix.

You could also install http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/USBcfgb075.zip (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/USBcfgb075.zip) which should help you decide exactly which lines need adding and you could test with your current drivers. If they're the ones that came with 4.51, they really should be updated as they followed the official spec instead of doing things the MS way.

As Dave says without a USB host controller driver you are never going to see any USB device.

To help speed things up I have attached HCIMONIT.EXE just run it in an OS/2 Command window and it will give the information you need to know.

You will also need to remove the REM from most of the USB items.  If hcimonit shows more than one host controller it needs to appear that many times in config.sys

There is also the output of hcimonit from my workstation.

Time to step in I guess:

Virtualbox aka VBOX emulates exactly one OHCI USB host controller for USB 1.x and, if you enable USB 2.0, exactly one EHCI host controller, regardless of what HW you PHYSICALLY have in your PC.
That said, this is what you need in your config.sys in the OS/2 guest installation to get things to work:
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS

and then, of course, the various USB class drivers, usually that is:
BASEDEV= USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:5 /FLOPPIES:0 /CDS:1 (as an example)

BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBMOUSE.SYS
Please note that you really do not need to install the HID/KBD/MOUSE drivers as VBOX emulates a PS/2 mouse and PS/2 keyboard even if you use a USB mouse !

What you then need to do when you plug in a USB stick is to "pass over" the USB stick from the host to the guest. That works via the VBOX GUI where you can explicitely claim a USB device from the host in which case it will disappear in the host and show up in the guest.
You can even automate this step for a specific device the moment that device is plugged in (read the VBOX manual on how that is done). Once the stick is "passed over" it will pop up in OS/2 just like in a native installation.

Lars

Hi Lars, let me begin from the last: I confirm that VBox passes over the usb resource connected in the Host just recalling it from the Device/Usb menu in the active Guest window, and at same time it disappear from the Host, at least this is correct.

Then, I have modified the config.sys as suggested.  Here what happens:

-the system initially boots with a USBEHCD.SYS controller not found warning, but no problem after that, it boots regularly. Also the USBMOUSE.SYS and USBKB.SYS warning was expected, it desappear by remming out the two lines in config,sys.

-in my OS2 Drives now I see one more drive. Before this, I had A-B with floppy icon (not ready when called), C OS2 installation, D CD/DVD drive or ISO (working), E Vbox shared folder.
   With the new situation I have same A-B-C-D,  E is now iconized as a CD/DVD removable but not ready when called and I think that it could represent the new usb stick volume,  F is now what E use to be (Vbox shared folder).

-I had connected to the Guest system 3 usb device consisting in one old Blackberry, one Canon Lide 100 scanner, and of course the Kingstone Data Traveler 109 USB stick. They're connected into an USB HUB. These four hardware resources appeared somehow listed in the OS2 Resource Manager.

Here below the images of what described

What does LVM show now? My guess is that you are now running into the situation where OS/2 can't handle your sticks. This is usually due to most all sticks appearing as large floppy drives and OS/2 only being able to handle them up to 2GBs.
You have a choice, fix the sticks by partitioning and adding LVM. I believe you said you have DFSee, which is good at doing this, see under the scripts menu IIRC. Or installing Lars's drivers. Lars's drivers have lots of bug fixes and a workaround to handle sticks formatted as large floppies, as well you can back up your old drivers while doing so so not that hard to go back. There's also the vbox snapshot feature.

lvmgui does not open anymore, the config.sys modifications is causing something wrong with it.   I've the mind that usb volume format/size isn't the problem, since none of the usb devices appear to work

HI Doug

Hi Doug, I have not prepared anything for OS2, believing that the sufficient requisite were Fat32 fs driver and the USB driver installed.

Bad assumption. You must prepare the stick for use with OS/2, but you need to get it mounted first. If OS/2 can't understand the file system, it should still mount the device, but it will complain that it needs to be formatted.

this is not happening: no USB volume detected is the situation

Quote
-If I go to x:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox I don't recognize anything usefull except for the folder ExtensionPacks whick contains directories with the name of other OS, none about OS2.
- if I go to the link https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch01.html#intro-installing I read references to the Extension Pack which, again, is same I already have.
Quote

Vbox Guest Additions are correctly installed in OS2 as per readme instructions: mouse integration, clipboard integration, shared folder, video driver, everything which comes with the OS2 Guest Addition installation is working

What about regular LVM? Type lvm in at a cmd prompt.
Also try rebooting with a stick attached. I've had sticks that only showed up if inserted before booting and never showed up if inserted. These were fixed by reformatting and redoing the LVM stuff.

Hope you didn't downgrade libc accidentally. The official additions comes with an old libc066.dll along with the forwarder DLLSs.

Hi Dave
no, the most recent version of the LIBC downloaded from netlabs repositories are untouched, I've skipped that step installing the additions, furthermore now I switched to the saved version of the config.sys before these specific modification, and lvmgui is back. Not even the simple lvm was working before this.  My mind about those warning lines appearing on booting (see image) is they're indicating something like "these controller/drivers are not present, and the rem on their lines in the config.sys are for this reason", of course I had not remmed those config.sys lines myself, it should have done automatically in an installation of something, maybe the USB 11.17 driver downloaded from The Arca Noae subscription.

There is also the output of hcimonit from my workstation.

no valid command - program - batch file  :-[

still to be installed in the system?

It is not a standard install program, which is why I posted it.  Just copy hcimonit.exe to C:\os2 and then run it again but as Lars said it should show the same as my screen grab - one ohci and one ehci.

Sorry I can't be of much help but I only use VBox with OS/2 as host to run one program in win XP which is the opposite of what you are doing.

Why do you keep ignoring what people are telling you ?

1) you need to load USBD in any case: BASEDEV=USBD.SYS
2) you have one OHCI host controller, you need to load BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
3) if you enable USB 2.0 in the VBOX gui, you need to add yet another driver: BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
4) you have to load USBD.SYS before you load USBHID.SYS, else USBHID.SYS is not going to load
5) you neither need USBHID.SYS, nor USBKBD.SYS nor USBMOUSE.SYS becauseVBOX emulates a PS//2 mouse and keyboard
6) you do not need to load USBUHCD.SYS, never, ever

You can now continue fumbling around with your system or you can do it right.

Lars, I'm swimming among all your indications posted which I entirely appreciate. I'm applying time by time everything suggested and providing feedback after that, as you could understand I'm not confortable working with this system but I like it, and thanks to this forum members help have successfully implemented something like: WPS printing system, Vbox guest addition, Firefox 45.5.9, Videolan 3.02, rmp-yum package manager, video drivers additional resolution mode and other minor implementations.  This said just to tell that I can get almost everywhere with a little bit of patience, although limited both by language and knowledge filters .
Anyhow -back to the topic- , my config.sys was already modified as per you indication, I repeat here below the lines, maybe you still find something wrong :
REM BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS /REQ:USBUHCD$
BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS
REM BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD

REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\apps\AMOUSE\AMOUSE.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBMOUSE.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBCOM.SYS

here below I attach what booting messages say (anyway it boots regularly), what HCIMONIT shows, and what USBCFG shows (before the panel appears I have to click many times OK on the GTDESK.DLL error message, although it is present in C:\OS2\DLL as it should be).
Thank you

Hi mauro

Being the author of USBcfg I am a bit surprised at the GETDESC.DLL failure. There are 2 possible causes that I am aware of:-

1] The GETDESC.DLL cannot be found

2] The driver files do not contain any buildlevel information

As you state that GETDESC.DLL is in \os2\dll it should be found - as long as \os\dll is in the config.sys libpath statement

All USB driver files from IBM, Lars Erdmann and ArcaOS/David Azarewicz that I have used contain buildlevel information which, I think, rules out 2] above.

The base USB drivers you need for 1 OHCI and 1 EHCI driver are:-

BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS

Notice no parameters to USBD.SYS

If you want USB Mouse/Keyboard add this line:-

BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS

(If using as a guest in VBox you may not need the above line)

If you want USB drive and CD support add these lines:-

BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD
BASEDEV=USBCDROM.ADD /CDS:1
BASEDEV= USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0

It might also be worth reading the USBcfg Help FAQ "USB Storage FAQ Introduction" which, while a little dated, contains information about preparing and using USB drives in OS/2.

Hope the above is of some help. I would also be interested in discovering the cause of the GETDESC.DLL failure.

Regards

Pete

Your photo gallery shows the additions driver loading. Do you see the rest, as loaded by VBoxService.exe in STARTUP.CMD? You can make that stay on screen, by not having an EXIT command at the end. It should show a few lines indicating the status of the program. Something similar to:

Hi Pete, thank you, I will get back on those lines as possible, and let you know.  For the GETDESC.DLL appearently missing (but after some attempts usbcfg runs) confirm that it is in the right OS2\DLL folder and the line of DLL calls is in the config.sys as well.

Hi Pete,
this is not sufficient for native USB keyboard and mouse support.

But in any case, in order to keep things simple and to not confuse Mauro any further, I strongly recommend to NOT specify any HID drivers (USBHID.SYs, USBKBD.SYS, USBMOUSE.SYS) at all. That's because for the guest, VBOX properly emulates a PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse, no matter what physical keyboard and mouse HW you use.
In short: you need no USB drivers in the guest to have keyboard and mouse support in VBOX.

@Lars - I fully agree with your points; especially the "not confuse" bit  :-)

@mauro - I guess it is possible that GETDESC.DLL cannot find a support dll that it requires. I suggest you download and install pmdll http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/system/pmdll-2.12.zip

Create a program object for pmdll and then drag'n'drop the usbcfg.exe onto the pmdll object. That will show if there is a problem with any support dll file(s).

about GETDESC.DLL:

this DLL uses these additional DLLs:
OS2OM30.DLL
SOM.DLL
DOSCALL1.DLL
KBDCALLS.DLL
NLS.DLL
MSG.DLL
SESMGR.DLL

The last 5 DLLs should all be in the \OS2\DLL directory. SOM.DLL can be a bit tricky. You should use the one in \OS2\DLL as this is the most up-to-date (there are compilers/toolkits that tend to supersede this file with their own which is a bad idea).

OS2OM30.DLL should also be in \OS2\DLL.

A word of warning regarding DOSCALL1.DLL: it has to match the kernel that you are using. The version for the W4 kernel is DIFFERENT from the version for the SMP kernel. Normally (fixpak etc.) you will get the kernel and the corresponding DOSCALL1.DLL as a matched set so normally you will not need to worry. But if you replace the kernel, you should be aware of that.

For GETDESC.DLL, at least on my system, this file is located in \ECS\DLL and not in \OS2\DLL (I am still using eCS).

it acts exactly as having a shadow copy of VBoxService.exe in the Startup folder , same Vbox Guest Additions loading, same opening situation, same system behaviour.

REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\apps\AMOUSE\AMOUSE.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBMOUSE.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBCOM.SYS

then at startup I'm getting the following situation -see pictures

1 a warning tells that volume D device is not ready - have to twiceclick "Return Error code to program" before screen clears-

2 devices from A to H appeared (they were A to E in the initial situation with no config.sys mods), of which now ABDFG when called give same "device not ready" warning,  H (Vbox shared folder) is empty as it should be, E is the CD/DVD/ISO volume for VBox assumption (use to be D)

3 screenshot of the actual Hardware Resources detected.

delete these 3 lines and replace with:

BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0 /CDS:1
That'll get you up to 8 USB sticks/disks, up to 1 USB CD-ROM drive and up to zero USB floppy drives.

USBCDROM.ADD is completely bogus (but it won't hurt if you load it …)

Here below is what it shows as entire tree (a bit of merge work, it is a long vertical picture)

delete these 3 lines and replace with:

BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0 /CDS:1
That'll get you up to 8 USB sticks/disks, up to 1 USB CD-ROM drive and up to zero USB floppy drives.

USBCDROM.ADD is completely bogus (but it won't hurt if you load it …)

ok thank you, now the situation appears to be lean, no more warnings anywhere.
Resuming:
with these lines on USB devices in config.sys

REM BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS
REM BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS
BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0 /CDS:1
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\apps\AMOUSE\AMOUSE.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBMOUSE.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBCOM.SYS

the system boots with no warning lines, no error windows as the desktop loads, and I have those drive/devices A to F as expected, where E (iconized as a removable disk) should be the usb stick which refuses to open as device not ready, F is the Vbox shared folder and D is the CD/DVD/ISO removable, as before.
Still cannot handle the USB stick volume but I think have moved a step forward from my first help request post.
I'm slightly optimist

Hi mauro

The output from pmdll indicates no problems...

Must admit that at the moment I have no idea why the usbcfg.exe call to GETDESC.DLL fails.

With regard to accessing a usb stick: If the usb stick is larger than 2Gb you need to "prepare" it before you can use it - see the USBcfg Help FAQs.

Hmmm. This indicates that you are using a version of OS/2, that does not auto mount USB devices (so old, that I had forgotten about that). I don't remember what you need to do to get a USB device mounted, in that case. With an LVM based version of OS/2 the command "LVM.EXE /RediscoverPRM" should mount it, but there should be no icon, until it is mounted (which is why I suspect an older, pre-LVM, system). That may also explain the "Not Ready" message.

Another possibility, is that the stick has been left dirty, and requires a CHKDSK /F to make it usable. Be sure to EJECT the device, before removing it. EJECT should work, if the device is not compatible with OS/2, but you may see the "Not Ready" message too. I also don't know whether you will be able to initialize the device, for use with OS/2, or not, without LVM.

Just trying to come up with other possibilities.

it is the OS2 Warp 4.52 .  Do you think -apart from preparing the volume >2Gb  that I'll try to do-  Lars'driver installation could be useful in this situation ?

No.

Get a newer OS version. Warp is dead. On OS/2 versions without LVM there is no decent way to assign drive letters to removables.

Isn't 4.52 the second convenience pack which has LVM?

Apparently, Warp 4.52 doesn't have LVM (I thought it did, but your description indicates that it doesn't - there should be no drive letter, until the device is mounted -, or you found a way to install without it), but LVM can probably be installed, if you can find a source for it. I don't remember how to get USB to mount without LVM.

Preparing the device is probably the single most important thing, that must be done. You probably need DFSEE to do it. I think you may be able to do it under windows, or Linux, as long as the device is less than 500 GB, but I never tried that, and I don't know if that would actually help, in this case.

Lars' driver is not likely to help.

In fact, this is all guess work. Perhaps if you posted the CONFIG.SYS, we may be able to spot something. It would confirm whether LVM is, or is not, installed (look for BASEDEV=OS2LVM.DMD), and whether you have the correct statements, in the correct order.

One thing, that might work, would be to mount the USB device (after preparation), in the virtual machine, and then boot. I never tried that either, and I am not sure if it can be done. Another thing to try, is to find a USB stick that is less than 2 GB, format it as FAT16, and see what happens. A 2 GB device, in those days was larger than anything that you could get, without spending a fortune.

The easy answer, is to forget about making USB work, and connect by network, or Shared folders (if that will work). You can also create an ISO file, and attach it as a CD drive, but that is a one way path. USB support is actually a recent addition to VBox, and it seems to need guest OS support to automatically mount the devices.

Sorry Doug but Warp 4.52 does come with LVM, I just looked it up on my CP2 CD.  The fact that it doesn't appear to be operational tends to point to more fundamental problems with the install in VBox.

It might be easier for mauro to create a new VBox OS/2 instance rather than trying to patch up the one he has.

Lars, Doug, Ivan, Dave: my Warp 4.52 runs lvm and lvmgui and has a DFsee installation as well.
as lvm starts it displays devices 2 to 9 by 96 Mb each, while device 1  is the 2047 Mb system disk,  warning time by time incorrect partitioning informations and failed last IO informations for those devices 2 to 9

Please post your CONFIG.SYS, and STARTUP.CMD (if it exists). There is way too much guessing going on here.

From your picture, what is the D: drive? I assume that E: is the CD drive, and you probably should eliminate the shared folder thing, while trying to get this working. It may cause problems. I also wonder how you got the CD drive to show up as E:. CONFIG.SYS should show that.

This is normal, and correct.  LVM recognizes that you have defined slots for 8 USB devices (the "BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0" line, in CONFIG.SYS), and lists them. Since they are empty, they give the information shown, along with error messages. LVMGUI simply displays what LVM tells it. Neither program is user friendly, which is the main reason why miniLVM was developed. I don't know if you can get that for OS/2 4.52. It comes with eCS (at least later versions), and ArcaOS. ArcaOS calls it "Logical Volume Management (simple)".

You probably need to use the command "LVM.EXE /RediscoverPRM", from a command line, to get it to even look for a mounted USB stick.

Hi Doug, no startup.cmd acting, the autostart of vboxservice.exe in Startup folder gives same effect after having checked as told in a previous answer, but if you feel that might be the problem, will revert again in a startup.cmd script.
D drive in my system is what Vbox is setted for CD/DVD/ISO drive as IDE secondary master. E is a new removable drive/volume appeared after the config.sys editing following your suggestion, F is the Vbox shared folder as per Guest Additions functionality, and it works, should be referred to this line in config.sys:  IFS=C:\OS2\BOOT\VBoxSF.ifs  .
The command LVM.EXE /RediscoverPRM in the OS2 command window gives no answer, prompt goes again blinking on [C:\] one line below.

Hi Doug, no startup.cmd acting, the autostart of vboxservice.exe in Startup folder gives same effect after having checked as told in a previous answer, but if you feel that might be the problem, will revert again in a startup.cmd script.

I would put it back into STARTUP.CMD, since that is where it was designed to go. I don't know what might happen if you start it in the startup folder. It may depend on the startup order, and that may not be what you think it is.

Okay, let's start with the USB lines, in CONFIG.SYS. After properly sorting what you posted, I see this:
Code: [Select]
REM [USB section
BASEDEV=USBOHCD.SYS
REM BASEDEV=USBUHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBEHCD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS
BASEDEV=USBD.SYS
REM BASEDEV=USBHID.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBPRT.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBMOUSE.SYS
rem DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBMOUSE.SYS
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS
rem DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS
DEVICE=C:\OS2\APPS\tame\usbresmg.sys
BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0 /CDS:1
REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBCOM.SYS

The most obvious problem, is that you have "BASEDEV=USBD.SYS" twice. I am not sure what that might do.

You also have: "BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0 /CDS:1", which is where the second CD comes from. I suggest changing that to: "BASEDEV=USBMSD.ADD /REMOVABLES:8 /FLOPPIES:0" (remove "/CDS:1") . If you do need a USB CD/DVD drive, there is another device line that does it, but leave that until you get it working. No point in complicating things.

The line: "DEVICE=C:\OS2\APPS\tame\usbresmg.sys" is probably not needed, and a version that is in the tame directory may be old, and not compatible with later versions of the USB driver. REM it, for now, and try it later, if you really need it.

There are other things that probably need to be tweaked, but I don't see anything else that might affect mounting a USB stick.

Sort done by Logical Config.Sys Sort: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/config/lcss-0-6-5.wpi (http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/config/lcss-0-6-5.wpi). Be sure to READ the instructions, if you decide to use it. It sorts Config.Sys so that humans, as well as machines, can read it. It makes sure that the lines are in the correct order, and does some commenting, but does no validation, or parameter checking.

Ok, I applied all suggestions, I still cannot get the usb pendrive appearing/recognized/managed as a new volume, neither in WPS nor in FC/2.
The only evidence that OS2 detects this USB device is the Resources Manager in OS2 System calling it, among the other USB resource list, "USB device 1.1.2" (this icon disappear if the USB stick is unplugged). Not even DFsee detects it.
I've also bought a new 4 Gb USB pendrive and reduced its volume size to 1.86 Gb Fat32 to see if it was a matter of >2Gb size.

But I've widely appreciated that all of you have tried to help me for this in anyway, providing friendly and competent indications, and even though I could not complete this task, at least I've learned other things good to know and have introduced some utility software good to have in any case.
USB hardware connection was wished but not so strictly fundamental in my OS2 Warp 4.52 VBox guest system, I can manage files exchange through the shared folder or ISO burned volume, and print works whith my network printer driver successfully configured.
Then I take the chance to thank you and wish a Merry Christmas.

VirtualBox 6 just came out, it has support for shared folders for a OS/2 Guest, so you might not need the USB pass-through anymore depending your intended use.

Also this attempt did not take any luck. In VBox 6 I tried the G.A. installation on an OS2 W4.52 machine cloned for test purposes, it went bad, the machine did not restart with those G.A. drivers. It should not depend by me, as I could successfully install and use Valery's version of G.A.

Whatsthedot works better than PMDLL.
(That's an older posting in this thread.)

Just ensure that the program object for PMDLL has an empty 'Working directory'. Then any DLL can be dropped on it and the current directory for PMDLL is changed to the directory of that DLL. It finds then other DLLs in that directory.

(This method can also be used to enable pack and unpack program objects for drag and drop, when the output should be created in the directory of the source file.)

Meantime I haven't give up and am also trying something else.  I've though that a brand new machine for a clean restart was needed to make new attempts, and have found this vdi file for an OS2 Warp 4.52 ready to use Virtualbox machine:

https://archive.org/details/VMOS2Warp4.52 (https://archive.org/details/VMOS2Warp4.52)

it has promptly started and the situation found was equal to what previous described in this thread with my other machine: usb stick recognized in hardware manager but no usb volume detected in LVMGUI and DFsee.  Then I went back in ANPM (yum-rpm) seeking which other item could seemed useful to install, and seen one called libusbcalls 11.17-1   (however already been installed in the other currently used OS2 machine).  After installed that, a G not-accessible volume appeared in WPS, and it was detected both in LVMGUI and DFsee.
At that point I have prepared it as described here

https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Prepare_the_FAT32_USB_Flash_Drive (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Prepare_the_FAT32_USB_Flash_Drive)

then I have tried to format it as described here

http://www.myrkraverk.com/blog/2018/11/formatting-usb-drive-for-os-2/ (http://www.myrkraverk.com/blog/2018/11/formatting-usb-drive-for-os-2/)

but as formatting starts, the virtual machine traps and must be shot down

However, opening LVMGUI I now have a G disk detected of 3728 Mb but still not accessible in WPS (see pictures).
Furthemore, selecting this disk in LVMGUI the option to create a new volume which I though was the next step, is greyed out .

Do you have other suggestions for this new situation?
Thank you

Hi mauro

libusbcalls is not needed for usb disk access.

As the usb volume is not detected by lvmgui of dfsee I have to ask: Does the usb drive appear in the Desktop -> Drives folder?

If "No" do you have \os2\boot\usbmon.exe started?

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete, maybe you missed some descriptions and pictures of my post, I'll try to resume, the answers are there except for usbmon.exe not mentioned before :

-The usb stick volume now appears (G) as a drive in the desktop drives folder, however it remains not accessible (see picture on my post). This has happened only after having installed libusbcalls 11.17-1. Before that, no USB volume appeared in the desktop drives.
-Also, after this installation, this USB 4Gb stick volume is detected by LVMGUI (picture in my post) and DFsee.
-I have prepared the USB volume with DFsee as described here : https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Prepare_the_FAT32_USB_Flash_Drive (https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Prepare_the_FAT32_USB_Flash_Drive) and I could not format it as described here http://www.myrkraverk.com/blog/2018/11/formatting-usb-drive-for-os-2/ (http://www.myrkraverk.com/blog/2018/11/formatting-usb-drive-for-os-2/) because system traps as the operation starts.
-usbmon.exe is in my C:\OS2\BOOT folder.
NOTE: all this has been performed on a new vdi machine (with its own ready configuration) downloaded here:
https://archive.org/details/VMOS2Warp4.52 (https://archive.org/details/VMOS2Warp4.52)

Thanks

As Peter said, USBCALLS has nothing to do with your problem even though you think it does.
It is not needed at all to have USB MSD support in OS/2.

Something else is wrong. Most likely it is USBMSD.ADD or OS2DASD.DMD / OS2LVM.DMD are out of date.
Recheck the version of all your USB drivers (USBD.SYS, USBEHCD.SYS, USBOHCD.SYS, USBUHCD.SYS,USBMSD.ADD, OS2DASD.DMD,OS2LVM.DMD). You can use the "bldlevel" command to get info for these drivers.

Finally, you can use my updated USBMSD.ADD:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/drivers/misc/usbdrv225.zip

Just pull USBMSD.ADD / USBMSD.SYM from the ZIP file (back up your existing USBMSD.ADD first).

Hi Mauro,

What you are doing seems rather complicated, you could try this.

I don't know if this will work for you using OS/2 in a VM but this is what I do on a real OS/2 install (I am using DFSee downloaded from hobbes in expert mode)

1) Find the usb stick with DFSee.  In my case it is a 64 GB stick that I used to install an updated win7 to a friends Ryzen computer.

2) Open the object to work with, in this case a disk and select the correct disk, number 4 for me.

3) Experience has shown that it is a very good idea to start with a clean slate, or I should say disk so I wipe the start of the disk to ZERO, again select the correct disk or you could end up in big trouble.  Disk 4 again.
3a) It is possible that you will be advised to eject the usb stick and reinsert it after this stage, in which case do so and then continue to the next stage.

4) With the wipe concluded it is create a new partition time. again select the correct disk.

5) Now select the type of partition and size.   In my case since I need the stick to transfer between Android tablets and my computer I need it to be fat32 and max size, I also select a primary partition.

6) Next step, volume name, partition name (either select those offered or give your own) and you MUST give a drive letter including the colon.

7) Confirm LVM disk name.

8) Now comes the format, since I want fat32 I select to format with FAT file system a partition to be selected.

9) in my case it is again disk 4.

10) Accept the defaults given. and the formatting takes place.

11) With formatting completed exit DFSee and eject the USB stick.

12) Reinsert the stick and confirm it is seen by OS/2 and is the size expected.  You can also write to it as a confirmation.

Hi Lars, before replacing those two drivers with your version, I checked those files version as you suggest:

files USBD.SYS, USBEHCD.SYS, USBOHCD.SYS, USBMSD.ADD, they have
 ver. 6.12.675 - sep 25 2001 -  file rev. 10.162

file USBOHCD.SYS has ver. 6.12.675 - sep 25 2001 -  file rev. 10.70

files OS2DASD.DMD, OS2LVM.DMD, have ver. 6.12.675 - sep 25 2001 -  file rev. 14.106

So, confirm they're out of date?
Thank you

All of your USB drivers are out of date (in fact you are using the latest IBM drivers which are buggy as hell).
Either update to the AN drivers or use mine (they are contained in usbdrv225.zip).

OS2DASD.DMD and OS2LVM.DMD are also much out of date (judging from the file dates). Even though, strange enough, the build levels for the drivers I am using (the most recent) are 14.105.

ok tks, i'd prefer using yours.  Do you also mean better using all the OS2 dir content for totally replace them, not only  USBMSD.ADD / USBMSD.SYM ?

……………...cut………………..

Ivan, it took just a little bit longer than only 5 minutes, but your tutorial is extremely clear and foolproof (exactly what I needed).
So finally I HAVE A WORKING USB STICK VOLUME ! To make it appear in the drives list after the system has booted, I just need to select the "refresh removable media" item
I thank you a lot, together with all the others (Lars, Pete, Martin, Andreas, Olafur, Doug, Joob, Dave, Roberto, Andrè, David) who wanted to help me here.

Hi mauro

To make a usb drive appear automatically in the Drives folder- no need to do the "Refresh" bit -  you need to install usbwarn from http://home.hccnet.nl/w.m.brul/usbstick/index.html

Hi Pete, it seems not doing what expected:  USB stick is already connected when my system boots, yet I do not see it until click "refresh removable drives". I copied both files in the OS2 directory (intended to be the working directory), nothing else to do, right? No problem anyway, thanks for suggesting.
That is a cool OS2 software site, is it yours ?

Hi mauro

"USB stick is already connected when my system boots" - there is the problem. OS/2 systems do not expect usb drives to be attached at boot.

OTOH, I've had broken sticks that were only seen if attached at boot, at least until I did the LVM+formatting.

That may depend on which USB drivers you use. ArcaOS has no problem with USB sticks that are attached at boot time (USB stack 11.17, or later, and I think that Lars' drivers do the same). They are simply not enabled until the system finishes booting. Then the built in AN Removable Media Monitor (REMM) widget mounts them. REMM has actually replaced the older USBMON program (that needs to be started at boot time to auto mount USB sticks). There is a duplicate file name, in a different directory, that is used for printers. (sorry, I don't remember all of the details from the ancient past). I think that USBMON also had a different (but similar) name in earlier versions of OS/2 (duplicated for printers). The really old way, was to use the LVM command, discussed earlier, but that still works. Pre-LVM did all of that in a different way.

Hi Doug

Presumably "the built in AN Removable Media Monitor (REMM) widget" is something exclusive to ArcaOS?
Is this a widget for the xcenter?

There are 2 versions of usbmon.exe in the IBM USB setup:

   [BootDrive]:\OS2\usbmon.exe - usb printer monitor

   [BootDrive]:\OS2\BOOT\USBMON.EXE - usb drives monitor

ArcaOS5.0.0/1 supplies [BootDrive]:\OS2\BOOT\USBMMON.EXE as a replacement for the IBM usb drives monitor [BootDrive]:\OS2\BOOT\USBMON.EXE

Hi Pete,
It is exclusive to ArcaOS and is an xcenter widget that Rich wrote. Very nice. Handles ISO's too with the ISO mounter that Rich also wrote/fixed and I believe is only available with ArcaOS.

Hi Dave

Not being an xcenter user I guess I'll just have to carry on manually Refreshing the Drives when I accidentally leave a usb drive attached at boot.

After just viewing its output, to verify a CONFIG.SYS order, it didn't clean up a few files. CONFIG.SYS.1, and 2 TEMP.* files in the LCSS directory. FWIW. If that's not reproducable (execute, view results, stop), then I may have somehow executed and aborted LCSS twice.
