Hardware / 122-Key keyboard
« on: September 26, 2018, 12:45:08 am »
I've got a Affirmative Unicomp 1225T 5250 Model M 122-Key PS2 Buckling Spring Keyboard (See attachment for picture)

I had to hook it to the computer using a Belkin USB adapter. It seems to work. Is there anything I need to do to have the system recognize all 122 keys? I have ArcaOS 5.0.3 running, and the last version of Personal Communications.

I'm trying to support Access to an AS400.

Networking / Rsync vs NetDrive
« on: May 13, 2018, 05:12:12 pm »
I have two computers on a network. Several key directories on the server are replicated to the client using rsync, which seems to be successful.

I also have the computers connected via NetDrive. I have Peter Moylan's FTP Server on the server and NetDrive's client mapping the Server's FTP onto a drive letter on the client.

On the server, I have a folder with a title and real name that are different. This seems to move fine with the rsync software. I think the title is stored in the Extended Attributes. I can look locally on the client, and that is fine. But if I look at the server drive using NetDrive, I do not see the title. Is that because the title is an Extended Attribute which is not a part of the FTP service NetDrive can offer?

To show what is going on, see the attached screen shot. The right is the client's local drive, and the left is the server drive mounted through NetDrive FTP.

Applications / WPTools error message
« on: May 09, 2018, 10:20:21 pm »
I've got a client, and his INI files are likely messed up.

I asked him to run WPTools CheckINI, but he gets the error

SYS1804: The system cannot find the file PMWIN.

I'm thinking that just means PMWIN.DLL isn't in the libpath, but if PMWIN isn't in the libpath, how is OS/2 even running? So I don't really know what is going on.

Well, I missed my chance to ask, but the question I would have asked is this:

What is going on with Firefox? As it stands, I can leave the browser pointed to a modern, active webpage, and after some time, the system will reset. I've been doing this long enough to recognize kernel corruption. Firefox runs the system out of some resource, and the kernel is not protected from such a shortage.

Having solved some of these problems in legacy industrial systems, I know they are challenging to solve. Is there any hope that a future version of Firefox will be more forgiving of system shortages?

Is the problem actually in Firefox?

Mail-News / Thunderbird and a long-running script
« on: January 26, 2018, 02:52:31 am »
Sometimes Thunderbird presents a message like the attached.

Warning: Unresponsive script

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now,
or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: chrome://messenger/content/messengercompose/MsgComposeCommand.js:465

(excuse typos in above. The actual text is in the attachment.)

This is happening while typing a plain e-mail. What is going on?

Utilities / backup and restore using zip
« on: October 20, 2017, 04:20:31 am »
For years, well really decades, I've used zip and unzip to backup and restore bootable volumes.

Now with ArcaOS, it doesn't work.

I use zip -qrS to backup and unzip to restore.

Now that doesn't work because \usr is full of symbolic links that get replaced by files.

This make rpm/yum stop working.

Does anyone have an alternative, or better options for zip that backup and restore symbolic links?

Setup & Installation / Shadows on the desktop stopped working
« on: October 16, 2017, 08:45:14 pm »
One of the machines I administer (running eCS 2.2 b2) has developed a problem. I can create a shadow (of a folder, for example) on the desktop, but it does not function. Around the same time as this started happening, I got the three error messages shown in the attachments.

After rebooting the machine comes up fine, except for the shadow problem.

What is going on? Can it be fixed?

Applications / Firefox crashes on maps
« on: September 20, 2017, 08:43:49 pm »
I'm seeing a pattern with Firefox 45.5.0 beta 8 where it crashes when the mouse hovers over a map. There is no .TRP file, although there is a beep.

It does not seem to matter if the map is Google or Bing.
A new profile brought relief, but on the second try, it crashed also.
I have one other user that I know that sees the same crash displaying a map.

Does anyone else see this behavior?
Is there anything else I could submit in a bug report other than a URL?

Is anyone using Lars Erdmann's USB Audio? What hardware are you using?

Networking / Copying SAMBA users and groups

If I have a SAMBA server, and I want to migrate to new hardware, how can I transfer my users and groups from the old server to the new one?

Networking / Secure telnet to AS400
« on: February 05, 2017, 03:50:07 pm »
OS/2 provides secure telnet to AS400, but setting it up is a little hard. I'm finding directions for the i-Series, but some of the rest isn't obvious. Like a lot of things in the era, Java 1.1 seems to be a requirement.

\IBMGSK40 is required, too. (Ever wondered what it was for?)

Mensys has moved a critical file from \IBMGSK40 to \ecs\bin\GSK4IKM.CMD, so that needs to be moved back.

Has anyone done it? I'm not really familiar with AS400.

Applications / ClamAV GUI
« on: January 18, 2017, 02:35:02 am »
I'm trying out the new ClamAV GUI from Netlabs.

Port of ClamAV-GUI by Joerg Zopes, release 0.4.1 for OS/2.

ClamAV-GUI is a Front-End for Clamav AntiVirus written in C++
using the QT4 Toolkit.

I installed ClamAV using RPM/YUM and got it working by editing my clamd.conf and freshclam.conf files.

When I start ClamAV GUI, a splash screen shows and then the program hibernates invisibly. Any idea how to troubleshoot?

Setup & Installation / Thinkpad T540p and eCS
« on: September 26, 2016, 04:22:56 am »
I'm still struggling to get this to boot. An earlier thread shows success with an Thinkpad X250, so I thought I might ask for help to get the T540p running.

http://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,948.0.html

I've cloned my X200 system disk, and while it starts to boot in the T540p, it gets hung up while displaying the boot logo.

I tried booting from both the eCS 2.2 b2 Dec 30 installation disk and from my own boot DVD using later drivers. Both seem to hang. eCS 2.2 b2 hangs on OS2LVM.DMD.

At this point, I can move the disk back to X200 and modify, then try again. What might I change to get this working?

Internet / iCloud access
« on: September 07, 2016, 04:00:10 pm »
iCloud stopped working for me again. I point the browser to the main iCloud page, and the little wheel spins for a while, then a message box comes up, offering to send the log to Apple.

The web console shows the following message, then it shows an ad to come work for Apple as a developer, and then a lot of other error messages.

Quote
mutating the [[Prototype]] of an object will cause your code to run very slowly; instead create the object with the correct initial [[Prototype]] value using Object.create

iCloud has been working for me since the release of Firefox 38 beta6. Before that it crashed with a different error, and before that it was working on Firefox 31. I imagine that Apple has now made changes that Firefox 38 beta 7 cannot support.

To see the error, point the browser at https://www.icloud.com. I'm hoping a newer port of Firefox, or else a bug fix will restore access.

Hardware / print won't go to default tray
« on: April 04, 2016, 11:01:45 pm »
I've seen this on a few printers. I'm using the PSPRINT postscript drivers in one case and the eCups postscript driver in another case. After installation, printing works normally, but then, after a while, the printer demands to have paper from the other tray.

I'm also curious if anyone has seen support for an IBM Infoprint 1352 printer.  Thanks!
