Applications / Re: hard hangs
« on: June 16, 2021, 10:55:01 pm »
PMview with multiple instances and working with lots of graphics sometimes hangs the system requiring a hard shutdown.
That sounds like a shared memory problem (with a small chance for failing hardware). How and do you check shared memory and which apps do you have loaded "high"?

This also occurs with FM/2.  Sometimes when I open an archive file and start to drag a file to add to the archive, the system locks up requiring another hard boot.
That's not a memory eater. But it accesses disks that may have failures.

Applications / Re: patched PmMerge

I have both of Holger's patches applied since years. I never noticed a problem without and with fix 1, but since the Mozilla times it was hard to say what really caused the countless crashes.

I recommend fix 2, because then dialog sizes adjust perfectly to a set font for PM_SystemFonts -> DefaultFont. (This value is usually unset, which defaults. to 10.System Proportional. I've mine set to 9. WarpSans.

The only problem is that IBM's view.exe has problems with that and e.g. the buttons are resized, but their font don't fit in the reduced size. That app doesn't seem to comply with PM rules. (Holger already has mentioned this problem in the readme.)

In eCS times Alex wrote that Asian fonts have problems with this patch. That's probably the main reason why it didn't make it into a later eCS.

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Re: Hobbes (Files) Reoganization
« on: June 12, 2021, 02:23:42 pm »
Yes, I agree with Dave.

Plus: The programmer is the one who knows best which version should be kept.

The question seems to be a bit theoretical since more and more ancient drivers are uploaded. Even when someone prefers the original SPEA-V7 driver, I don't guess what's the benefit of keeping the older 2.02 release.

If they would be moved to a separate dir, I won't complain. But how about an older Uniaud driver then?

Dariusz, you've opened a thread here about your connection loss. Do you have tested if the issue persists with the files Alex has mentioned?

About switching desktop windows:

There's no program to switch the desktop windows of XPager. You can do this only manually. If you open its context menu and click on Properties, the Screen object opens with the XPager panel. You can there activate hotkeys to do that.

I have never had a problem deleting the USBPRT Auto monitor from the Startup folder.
Finally confirmed here, thanks. I had to clean my inis.

First ckeckini /C /Y:2. cleanini.exe reports a bug and won't start, so I used xfix to delete many handles. After that, there were not too many orphaned program objects. Maybe I should have protected them first. After recreating these, I started cleanini /c /delall, always with a long list of paths below [Handles] and [FolderPos] to remove.

I had 3 blocks of handles before (many years ago I had 6) and am now down to 1 block. With xfix I deleted almost half of the 3 blocks.

What I've seen with cleanini the last times I used it: It requires a Ctrl+Alt+Del restart (press it 2 - 3 times with CAD handler), not just a WPS restart. Otherwise desktop icons move on the next full start. Unfortunately that still happens with Rich's newest version if IFX, but I always have my tool installed in a shutdown folder, because of that. (Due to the bypassed shutdown, it couldn't work.)

I guess the recreation was caused by having accessed an archived desktop unintentionally with the WPS. Hope that's the same for Lars and others.

Dave, maybe the object is in the XWorkplace Startup Folder instead of the legacy WPS startup folder ? For me, it is in the legacy WPS startup folder.
No, it's always recreated in <WP_STARTUP>. That one is always processed before any XFldStartup object. Maybe it's recreated early on startup via PM_InstallObject, indirectly added by USBPRT.SYS. Quite unlikely and I suppose its notification window during object creation can't be disabled.

Here is mine.

BTW: The personalized drivers made a lot work to x their info out. What a mess and for whom?

It works for me with the latest kernel.

Setup & Installation / Re: Install from USB

Yes, OS/2 can't be installed on removable drives. (Even for the maintenance systems on installation media or for the eCS demo CDs, a RAM disk is created to make that work.)

Utilities / Re: controlling stunnel as if it were a daemon
« on: May 17, 2021, 03:08:13 pm »
On OS/2, stunnel will not run as a daemon/service, so I presume I cannot assign a PID to it and then kill it at will.
Yes, you can, if there's an executable. The PID is not assigned by you, but by the system whenever a process is started. You may want to check it with Top. Another useful tool to kill a process without knowing the PID and much more is Pgmcntrl.

About Hobbes: The long description is not correctly displayed in the current HTML interface. It's correct when being downloaded as file per FTP. Second, upload requires passive FTP and active FTP is not rejected. It would just create 0 B files.

The uploader decides himself which prior versions are deleted on archiving (moving it to the destination) by the 'Replaces' entry.

(I always keep main versions and for others I delete the prior ones. One reason is that I want to ensure that people always use the newest version. If something important doesn't work, I'll upload a new version as soon as possible. Another one is to keep the repository clean. The full list of official versions can be accessed on netlabs.org, where I have have more options with the web page to direct people to the latest version.)

Ian seems to keep old versions on his site (where he mirrors Hobbes plus gathers files from other sources, also those that wouldn't be available elsewhere).

I don't like the Hobbes situation either. It's just too unsafe to rely on a single server. I'm glad that Ian's server exists and am not sure if we need another mirror.

I tried to download the given file but my anti viral tool detected a virus inside.
You never got a false alarm before?

It should be save to run the executable (and the resource DLLs) on OS/2.
