Networking / Re: Moschip USB to Ethernet for OS/2 not workingon USB1 port
« on: September 09, 2020, 11:20:04 pm »
Hi Lars and Pete, exactly as you say.

I've installed the missing USB drivers from the official ArcaNoae USB stack. (simply all)
Then included them in config.sys (together with the already existing entry), and... IT WORKS like  charm. *___*

Hrhr. Problem solved. : ]

Thanks together. Very helpful!

Lars:
> Are you sure that you have installed the proper host controller drivers (USBUHCD.SYS, USBOHCD.SYS, USBEHCD.SYS and now also USBXHCD.SYS) for the host controllers that your system has?

USBUHCD.SYS --> NOT in config.sys
USBOHCD.SYS --> FOUND in config.sys
USBEHCD.SYS --> NOT in config.sys
USBXHCD.SYS --> NOT in config.sys

> You should either have at the PCI.EXE output to find out or you will need to use the USB test tool testusb.exe (or some such) to find out what controllers you have.

PCI.exe says only UHCI is active:
Code: [Select]
Device 719Ah 82440MX USB Universal Host Controller
PCI Class Serial, type USB (UHCI)

I suppose I should install the missing USB drivers. I will do so and report back with results.

Martin, lsusb shows:
"Bus 001 Device 003: ID 9710:7830 MosChip Semiconductor MCS7830 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter"

The product is called "DeLock USB 2.0 Ethernet Adapter"
Link: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0009M1LFW

Running linux commands on the Toughbook is rather tough... as this notebook suffers any boot methods than A:/C:, it's got only 192 MB of RAM (max), a single core 300 MHz.
ArcaOS went onto that notebook via cloning a virtual machine.

So the above lsusb output is from another notebook that can run the usb network card.
And: What is usbres?

Hello together, and thnks for your replies! : )
Interesting ideas both.

Martin, I will look these up and post them shortly.

Lars, the driver is called USBMOS.OS2, first included in the last USB-12_07.exe DL'ed from ArcaNoae subscription website.

The driver works fine on all my USB2 notebooks.
I will need to run the measures you have suggested on the target notebook and report back.

I do have tested multiple notebooks with the USB network card and the "Moschip USB to Ethernet for OS/2". They all were working like a charm with that network "card".

I now tested with a Panasonic Toughbook CF-M34 MK1, which comes with a USB1 port.
ArcaOS runs fine, USB is enabled in BIOS, but the Moschip USB network card does not work, nor do its' lights turn on, just the USB power LED on the network connector, but not the LINK or TRAFFIC LED.
So I assume, the driver just cannot handle USB1?

Thanks in advance, I wonder what the reason is.. :o

Setup & Installation / Re: Triple OS setup?

Oups.. good point in loading a kernel in the first place, and even another kernel when the primary one fails.
So.. yes.. only choice ultra fast 2 second delay when choosing. : ]

Not sure if Haiku OS will work in a triple setup, but I did a setup with ArcaOS, Linux Mint and Windows 8.1 a while ago.

Using the ArcaOS utilities to partition the hard drive went well for ArcaOS and Windows, but the Linux Mint installer (installed last) didn't want to let me use the previously made partition for Linux because "it is not properly aligned to HDD boundaries".
So I let it re-create the partition, installed Linux Mint, and then went back to ArcaOS maintenance mode and "corrected" the partition errors.
Everything works, everything boots.

And yes.. if your Linux distribution lets you install no boot manager at all, it would be for the best.
This is because installing grub onto the linux partition, you will see two boot managers at start:
1) start the machine
2) first AirBoot wants to know what to boot
3) if you select "Linux Mint", AirBoot boots directly into GRUB, where you can choose again. (makes little to less sense)

So.. would be best if Air Boot boots Linux directly without using GRUB at all.

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Re: OS/2 Trademarks
« on: August 28, 2020, 10:04:50 am »
Why? OS/2 IS great already! :D

Question is: If you ask 100 people in your town: "What is OS/2?", I guarantee 90% won't know.
The typical thing like back in the days, when OS/2 was still maintained by IBM: People don't know the product, and/or don't know what it is for.. and why they should give it a try, even though they have Windows running. :>

As for ArcaOS: As soon as the typical problems are gone (browser, usb, uefi, gpt, localisation), merchandise should start, so more people actually know the product. - Perhaps even a demo live CD. (Perhaps not like AOL-CDs which were EVERYWHERE xD). - I often see people interested, but they are not willing to spend 117 EUR just to try out a product.

Anyway.. getting offtopic a little bit, I think I could prove OS/2 is not well known enough to be compared with brands like Mc Donalds or KFC.

But still, as Guzzi said, there still is Copyright. And since IBM and Microsoft have their hands on that stuff, this might be a thread for these two (and their lawyers). I suspect goodwill is required to officially abandon the brand and hand it over to somebody else. You might not be able to fight for this at court, as these companies have the ressources and also the best lawsuits in the world..

And even though the brand is gone, world wide, it's still "glowing hot iron".. better not touch it. ; )

Potentially newly made merchandise should better not include the IBM brand.. like on these T-Shirts ; )
Just OS/2 (and/or Warp) would need to do.

And indeed.. a lawyer should maybe have a look into this, before anybody should use OS/2 (and/or Warp) on any selfmade products. Just to be on the safe side.

Don't tell IBM and Microsoft. It might be like with that guy back then, who realised the google.com domain had expired. So, he went and bought it... and google had to buy it back, after they found out. :>

Maybe ArcaOS can be renamed to OS/2 5 :p (just kidding)

Programming / Re: Non-English programming questions - in English
« on: August 26, 2020, 02:28:39 pm »
As for German:
Programming commands are all in English. Havn't seen any exception but Excel 2000 VBA, which all of sudden had german commands, rendering all english sources useless as they weren't understood all of sudden anymore. Microsoft had learned from that disaster.. and so even for Excel: English commands everywhere (besides the possibility of using German ones).

As your example covers SQL: Yes, all in English, but as already said, international numbering might differ... like for instance the one-thousand divider in DE is . while in US and UK it is , --> 1.000 (EN would be 1,000)
In DE the numbers behind a full number are separated by , --> like 12,3 (EN would be 12.3)

Besides that, there should be no difference in programming.

Setup & Installation / Re: Problematic OS/2 installation on IBM x3200
« on: August 18, 2020, 12:55:32 pm »
I suppose this has nothing to do with the graphics card; At this early phase grahpics are either 80x25 text mode or 640x480 graphics mode, which all VGA cards (and BIOSes) can do.

I've faced a similar error display, when installing OS/2 Warp 4 on a very old notebook. I suppsed hardware is being scouted at the start, which fails in an error.

Let's wait for other opinions and for people who can actually read numbers on the error details.

Thanks Andi for letting me know!
Always interesting to hear different people about this topic. (Maybe we should rename the topic :>)

It's always a problem, people treat such stuff as it would be their religion and spread rumours on a believable way.
Of course this only works with people that..
1) have no clue and
2) do not have the time to verify these exact topics.

... like I am! I have no clue and no time to verify. Also I find it difficult to get myself some trusty studies on that topic.
I do, however, have heard from collegues and THIS collegue especially. Some say mobile phone and wifi rays are completely safe, as they need to meet regulations, some others say: OMG go away with that, BECAUSE... [place some trusty sounding stuff here, that.. if you think about it, still sounds trusty].
As a noob, I have problems whom to trust.
The only option would be to go out and read oneself in.

Problem is, this is quite a vast field of new stuff to read into, especially with radiation and how rays are emmitted.
I've heard it even matters in which way the rays are measured.

First problem to face: Whom do you believe? Official sources, that only(?) tell you about officially validated values of highest radiation allowed for Wifi, DECT and mobile phones, or do you want to look behind these values and see what other countries have. Weirdly these can differ from country to country. - But why would they? Are polish people way easier to radiate (which is nonsense xD), or why did they have WAY lower maximum values for allowed radiation? Some months ago, Poland merged their regulations to fit european standards now... which allow higher radiation (like in Germany).

First noob question from me: How is that possible? Either a radiation at a specific level IS not healthy anymore OR it is still within healthy boundaries.
And second noob question: Who tells what is still healthy? Governments can't do this, as they have no clue about nerd things.. so they ask lobby organisations or even producers of such hardware what they THINK is still healthy.
But of course they want to sell their stuff, so they define their stuff to still emmit in healthy regions?

I still remember the japanese government to RAISE the allowed radiation limits AFTER the blowout in Fukushima, just to tell people "you are still safe! See? These are the safe values.. and look what we have measured! Don't panic. It's all still fine."
Even mainstream media reported that the measured values would atleast be classified as RISKY, applying the old maximum values... but of course are classified as SAFE with the new maximum.

Anyway. I've looked around for studies about health topics for Wifi and mobile phone rays, and the result was: Some studies come to the conclusion that mobile phones are a health RISK, especially 5G, and some others say its totally safe.
But whom to believe now? It's all a complete mess, as those who pay for these studies, do have their own interests.

All I know is that insurances won't insure against wifi rays/mobile phone rays. The official statement is: "We do not know if this is healthy or not."... which already is like Oh god.. why would they say this? They should have enough money to pay nerds that understand such stuff, or laboratories to test such things on their own.. if they cannot find any trusty study.

However... if insurance companies deny to insure something, it's generally a good idea to step back a little, as they are wealthy companies and should know the risks or be able to get the knowledge, as they usually insure ANYTHING but wifi/phone rays and nuclear power plants. : ] - There is even a insurance that covers aging on hollywood stars' body parts (yes, head that Madonna has her *ss insured for instance, on german mainstream TV)

--> Anyway. At the moment I have two contrary statements, and so it looks like I need to get my own measurement equipment (for low and high frequencies) to do my own checks on a frequent basis. - And of course I need to find sources of believable knowledge on that topic.

My collegue at work, who told me all of this, and showed believable statistics, used to work at a company that produces power generators, power houses and shieldings for those. Back then measuring this stuff became a hobby for him.
Because low frequency radiation limits were abused on a regular basis, he quit there for health reasons. Now he's working as a software developer at our place, and is radiated with high frequency rays like wifi and mobile phones for atleast 8 hours per day. Choose what delivers cancer quicker... ; )

Andi, can you suggest equipment for measurement and also link trusty documentation to read?
