Title: QT5 simplebrowser
Post by: Remy on November 09, 2020, 09:26:54 pm
After download and add of all missing dlls, trying to start "sh eun.sh" I have a "BUS ERROR" error message into the log file.
Any idea about this error ?
Thanks

Usually a memory error IIRC. Where did you download from?

I've downloaded:
http://rpm.netlabs.org/test/qtwebtest5.7z
http://rpm.netlabs.org/test/Qt5Core.7z

Other needed dll's though ANPM

Posting this from the Qt Simple Browser. Once I figured out how to run, tried to be fancy at first, it runs. It is very simple and slow and I wouldn't want to use it all the time, it is more of a proof of concept.
Did crash when I tried to load Github, rememered my login here, likely through a cookie. As a preview, I guess this is to be expected.
Do you know if Bitwise wants bug reports?

I've got it fairly stable by marking the DLLs to load high and increasing my VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT to 3072. Had a hard time marking QT5WebC.dll, kept hanging the computer until I copied it to my HPFS formatted ram drive.
It is a memory hog, even in single process mode. This may have caused the bus error.
It displays most everything I've tried, does well on the HTML5 test. Unluckily it is slow. Trying to play a YouTube video was frustrating just waiting for the ads to finish, it was running at perhaps a quarter frame a second, very low CPU usage though.
For now it'll be handy for the odd page that doesn't display and should only get better. Besides the speed issue, stuff like pasting a URL doesn't work here, little well drag'n'dropping one. Full screen isn't available on YouTube and it an extremely simple browser. I expect the backend will improve and we'll get better front ends.

A new version of highmem.exeis in the pipeline.

Copy/paste, video playback and lack of sound known and currently known undocumented issue's.
This is an internal beta we where still testing.

Download highmem.jpg and rename to highmem.exe. This fixes the hang on webkitc.dll.

I replaced, the highmen.exe in my Apache open office and it could be my imagination, but open office appears to open faster than previously.

Likely your imagination unless you hadn't marked the DLLs previously. IIRC, highmem.exe only changes a bit or 2 in the header of the DLL. The new highmem is much faster at marking, I think the old one read the whole DLL and the new one, just the beginning.

be carefull with the new highmem, I just got my system with application no more working due it set 2 modules to highmem while it should not
This makes highmem not working afterwards and I had to use above512 to unmak both wrongly marked dlls.

That is what happens when you download "internal" beta software  ;)
As in it does not have readme file...
Highmem is not to blame.

Two issue's can cause this: Did you mark the code and data segments to load high ?
Only mark the code segments.

Second issue:
There is a bug that when you load DLL's high they are not unloaded from memory.
This is a bug in the kernel...

About first issue: yes
About second issue, I konw it and dlls marked as load high are left loaded. This way, always same dlls are reused instead of loading them again and again with lose of space.

Can someone enlighten me why I would use the new highmem at all ? It does the very same thing as all the highmems that already exist but potentially it does them faster.
But it is a one time action to mark DLL code (and data) segments to load high. The change is persistent. You do not do it over and over again.

For me, it's just the utility I'm used to to do the marking. Qt5WebC.dll is 243 MBs in size and it seemed to be a candidate to be marked high. I did first run it on my ram drive, formatted as HPFS and marking it high worked. After a trp and losing my ram drive due to having use the power button to reboot, I tried it on a JFS volume and it would hang the system.

"The change is persistent."  Sure it is

'You do not do it over and over again.'  right, One time is enough

As you know, there is an issue into OS/2. When an application loads the dlls above 512 and when the application is closed, the dlls are unloaded but the corresponding memory range is than unusable... To prevent this, having an alltime active background process just loading the highmem dlls prevents the dlls to be unloaded and preserves the high storage space.

I see, but this is not a bug introduced by the use of the highmem tool but rather a bug in the OS memory management to properly deal with module objects (code or data) loaded into high memory which, at least from what you are reporting, even relates to the module loading process (where a file is read from disk and its contents loaded into memory).

Was the JFS volume a volume on a hard disk or also on the RAM drive ? If it was on the hard disk, that is really intimidating as it would indicate that even the IFS can introduce a problem in module load. If it was on a RAM drive, I'd more suspect that the RAM drive's use of memory (doing all those tricks to make memory above the 4GB physical address boundary accessible) interferes with the OS's provision of high memory.

All the highmem tools do the same: set some bits in the executable header that set segment properties.

Older versions of highmem.exe read the complete DLL when changing the DLL. And it seems this happens on JFS volumes the system hangs.
The new version of highmem fixes this as it only needs to modify the first part of the binary.

Exactly. the hang was on a JFS formatted hard drive partition when it was reading in the DLL to mark it. I've seen the same behaviour marking xul.dll but more sporadically and often a crtl-c would kill the highmem process.

Hey, just my few cents. Stuff in /test is surely not for general public. So no bug reports etc. are accepted for that. The new highmem fixes some nasty bug in DosRead on JFS which hangs the system if an app tries to load a few hundred megabytes in one go. It's available in the exp repo as RPM now BTW. And you should NOT mark LIBCN0.DLL or LIBCX0.DLL for loading high — it will break virtually everything on your system.

As for the rest, Chromium behaves really faster and smoother here than Firefox in many situations (especially on heavy JS sites) and in general produces lesser CPU load. YouTube playback is slow not because of JS slowness or such, it's because of some incorrect time scale interpretation somewhere on the pipeline, it's just "ticks" 1 ms per 1 s or so. HTML5/JS animations themselves run in the right time scale (e.g. on qt.io). To be sorted out. But again, this is not for general use yet (although it already can do what FF can not since long - e.g. visiting online banking sites etc.). Please stay tuned and consider a donation to BWW if you want to see it ready for general use.

Current 1.0.0 release is available in highmem-1.0.1-1.oc00.pentium4, will you continue with those updates as well, or will highmem.exe transition to the RPM package...OR...did you mean to say that the new highmem.exe is available as highmem-1.0.x-1.oc00.pentium4 RPM package on the EXP repo?

Sorry, may seem silly, but better to clarify as opposed to assuming anything. I suspect you meant the updated highmem RPM package as opposed to rolling it into the base RPM RPM package.

Hi

Today I installed the "Simple Browser proof of concept" announced by Bitwise.

Quote
Proof of concept:
We released a proof of concept browser, which is limited in functionality. It lacks bookmarks, printing and more. This browser is to demonstrate, that a lot more websites are working. The Otter Browser in the end will have more functionality of course.
Here you can download the latest browser version (http://rpm.netlabs.org/test/qtwebtest5_4.7z). In the 7z download is a readme.txt file with details how run run the browser.
In order to run it, you need to update libc, libcx, libevent and ffmpeg-libs from Netlabs experimental repository.

I also installed "minizip" from the rpm/yum .

I get this error "SYS1804: The system cannot find the file XSLT1."

Which package has that DLL?

Hi

I updated/installed:  libc, libcx, libevent, ffmpeg-libs, libxslt, minizip.

If I run SimpleBrowse.exe directly (processor spikes up), it freeze my VM once I put a URL and press "enter".

But I tried, reading the readme, with "sh.exe run.sh" it worked.

@Igor, looks like you don't have libevent installed.
@Martin, likely the important part is QTWEBENGINE_CHROMIUM_FLAGS=--single-process. Eventually, with luck, each tab will run in its own process so a crash will only take out the one tab.

Hello
The first tests with this browser I really liked, but if they have put it here, I understand that it is for us to comment on the bugs that we have found. But on the other hand it gives me the feeling that this is in preparation and many of the faults are already controlled. My question should we report the bugs? or it is not necessary.

Hi Roberto, I'd guess that Bitwise currently has enough bugs on their plate and considering what Sylvan earlier posted, this being a technological preview, no bug reports yet.
Eventually they'll have a beta and ask for bug reports.

Hi Igor, interesting. What function crashed? Need a bit more of the trp report, namely the start of the stack trace, assuming that QT5GUI.DLL has its debug info intact.
The problem is our GCC port does not correctly align these instructions, it is being worked on but since only the unsupported OS4 kernel supports AVX, it likely isn't a priority, though SSE(2) does have the same problem at times.
Ideally for now might be a kernel switch in the OS4 kernel where you can turn off the AVX support flag. Well written programs will do 2 things, check that the CPU supports AVX and check that the Operating System supports AVX. The OS needs to save those registers when task switching.
Title: Re: QT5 simplebrowser

Hi Dave

unsupported OS4 kernel

So far  OS/4 kernel has been supported  not that bad:)

Well written programs will do 2 things, check that the CPU supports AVX and check that the Operating System supports AVX. The OS needs to save those registers when task switching.

As far as I know, programs only need to check if the OS supports AVX.

It works lake this:  OS tries to detect AVX,  if it is available  -  OS changes its context switching code to AVX one and sets a flag - "AVX supported"  for  programs.

So programs should either not have AVX code at all, or have a separate branch for AVX code based on the "AVX supported" flag.
Title: Re: QT5 simplebrowser
Post by: Dave Yeo on January 21, 2021, 08:42:48 pm
Maybe I should have worded "supported" better. Arca Noae absolutely refuses to support the OS4 kernel including threatening to kick off any testers caught using it and Bitwise, I assume, is more interested in supporting the official kernel.
As for detecting AVX support, looking at various code, most of it seems to test for both CPU and OS support before taking the AVX path.
Title: Re: QT5 simplebrowser
Post by: OS4User on January 21, 2021, 08:54:14 pm
...hreatening to kick off any testers caught using it..
Arca probably had some reason for this - testing is a rather sensitive process, the less variable components there are, the better.

As for detecting AVX support, looking at various code, most of it seems to test for both CPU and OS support before taking the AVX path.

It's hard to say, but for programs, the presence of AVX is completely useless without OS's support.

Post by: Dave Yeo on January 21, 2021, 09:11:37 pm
Well, for something not running in a multi-tasking environment, like pure DOS, OS support wouldn't matter.
I guess the question is whether all operating systems test the CPU before setting the AVX supported flag or if some just automatically set it.
We're still left with the problem that our GCC doesn't do alignment well enough to support AVX, resulting in crashes like Igor's. Along with whether disabling it is straight forward. I have no idea about the browser and its support and whether a simple configure argument will disable it or the code needs hacking. Be interesting what functions are using AVX.

If OS sets "AVX supported" flag  without the real support - it will not work.

GCC  does necessary alignment very well, but it gets lost in a.out format and linking.

Hi Dave.

I copied it into it's own directory (C:\PROGRAMS\qtwebtest5_4) which I've then added under PATH (LIBPATH had no success either) in config.sys. I've added added the check.log in case it helps; from what I can see, it's looking for DLLs which are definitely installed and updated from the Netlabs-exp repo where required.

Maybe ir would help if the developers put together a zip file of ALL the correct extra DLLs so anyone trying the software could put them in the program directory and start the program with a CMD script and beginlibpath statement.  That way anone trsting the program could be sure that they have all the necessary support ti get it running.

Hi Ibrahim, Tellie's advice about Qt5-qtdeclarative looks correct.
You shouldn't need to add it to your PATH or LIBPATH. Just create a program object pointing at sh.exe with run.sh as the parameter and the working directory where you installed it.

Hi Ivan, the developers don't seem interested in creating a full package, they did include the means to figure it out, a working copy of highmem, really need to load the QT5 DLLs high and directions as well as a sh script to figure out where you're running it from and set BEGINLIBPATH and LIBPATHSTRICT.
One thing is the DLLs themselves are a moving target, tomorrow there may be an updated DLL that fixes a bug for example.
Unluckily we now are supposed to the RPM thing. Since I didn't want to update to netlabs-exp here, I wrapped the whole thing in a script to use a different unixroot.

I couldn't make simplebrowser work until I upgraded my RAM from to 2GB to 4 GB. Am I doing something wrong, or 2GB PCs will not be able to run the new browser? Did anyone make it work in 2GB? Please share with us the procedure.

FYI: Roderick posted some information of the "Test version of the new QT based browser (https://www.os2world.com/cms/)".  He updated the readme.txt (2021-02-07) to help with some doubts.

Silvan from Bitwise Works corrected on twitter that it is not a test version of the new browser, it is a proof of concept with a very simple browser within qtwebengine.

Anyways, feedback is welcome. I remain myself optimist about this project, we really need a modern browser.

Well then I did not word it optimal, sorry not intended wrong in any way :-)

What I tried to achieve with the readme is that this is a test browser from the QT framework.
It lacks some of the features of a normal browser. Wha is does show is that this rendering engine is way more spec compliant then Firefox 45 is.

I hope people are willing to make a donation.

Hi All

So far this browser test is a complete failure here . I am presuming that I am meant to start it using the run.sh file in a bash window (in the absence of the run.cmd mentioned in the readme) but entering run causes the window to disappear then reappear and creates an empty log.

Possibly I am starting it wrong or do not have all the needed support libs...

One needs to read the read me. be sure to follow the direction in it and update all the appropriator RPM files. When you have done this reboot. Run the browser from the command line with nothing else running. I found it  to be a great step for the future browser.

At a cmd line, doing "sh run.sh" should work. Have you tried the included chkdll32? Example,
Code: [Select]
K:\QT5>chkdll32.exe Qt5Core.dll
Loading DLL 'libcn0' --> W:\USR\LIB\LIBCN0.DLL.
Loading DLL 'stdcpp6' --> W:\USR\LIB\STDCPP6.DLL.
Loading DLL 'gcc1' --> W:\USR\LIB\GCC1.DLL.
Loading DLL 'tcpip32' --> W:\MPTN\DLL\TCPIP32.DLL.
Loading DLL 'doscalls' --> loaded.
Loading DLL 'libcx0' --> W:\USR\LIB\LIBCX0.DLL.
Loading DLL 'z1' --> W:\USR\LIB\Z1.DLL.
Loading DLL 'icuuc' --> W:\USR\LIB\ICUUC.DLL.
Loading DLL 'icuin' --> W:\USR\LIB\ICUIN.DLL.
Loading DLL 'pmshapi' --> W:\OS2\DLL\PMSHAPI.DLL.
Loading DLL 'pmwin' --> W:\OS2\DLL\PMWIN.DLL.
All DLL's used by 'Qt5Core.dll' could be loaded.

The problem is the usual one - there should have been a zip (or 7z) supplied with ALL the DLLs that are needed to run the browser.  That way everyone trying to test it would stand a reasonable chance of having it work for them.

Hi Dave

The checkdll32 routine indicated some of the libs involved needed updating here.

The browser now starts but does not display any webpage text on most of the websites I have tried - ie os2world.com loads as a page without any text or images. Should this browser be able to display os2world.com? - If "Yes" then I suspect I missed another lib that needs updating.

Start it by typing

You can use the OS/2 command prompt for that - no need to start a specific shell.

If you want to check if you have all necessary support files installed, type

Code: [Select]
sh run-check.sh
That produces a text file named simplebrowser-check.log, that might contain a clue.

From your log:

Code: [Select]
Unable to load DLL 'Qt5WebW'.  DosLoadModule returned: 2
OS/2 reports 'AVUTIL56' contributed to the failure.

avutil56.dll is part of ffmpeg-libs 4.2.2-3, which is a prerequisite for the browser (the older version ffmpeg-libs 2.8.6-2 contains avutil54.dll).

Also from your log:

Code: [Select]
Loading DLL 'Qt5WebC' --> NOT loaded!
Unable to load DLL 'Qt5WebC'.  DosLoadModule returned: 2
OS/2 reports 'AVUTIL56' contributed to the failure.

Same reason: avutil56.dll.

I had the same situation. Try rebooting, and after that use highmem *only* on qt5webc.dll:

highmem -c qt5webc.dll

That worked for me.

Also remember that being a simple proof of concept, it doesn't do things like expand URLs like we're used to so to go to OS2World, you need to enter the full url, https://www.os2world.com/
it really needs copy and paste for entering URLs and passwords.
The profile also seems to easily get screwed up and need clearing with cleanup-caches.sh.
Anyone upgrading FFmpeg with a zip should also install the ffmpeg-legacy-libs for the older Mozilla browsers as well, I believe YUM should do this automatically.

Font problem? Try rebuilding the cache,
Code: [Select]
fc-cache -r

Hopefully it isn't looking for a font you don't have, though it should substitute.
Otherwise, perhaps a DLL is still not quite the right version?

I understand all the excitement regarding this...but with all due respect I wholeheartedly question the wisdom of just unleashing instructions to updated multiple RPM packages as a pre-requisite to getting the browser to work.

There are numerous EXP only repo RPMs here, each one possibly screwing up your working OS/2 install.

Having myself moved away from relying on ZIP installs a while ago, I for one wish this test was packaged/re-packaged as a ZIP file with all the DLLs included. The other approach just seems far too risky (unless you of course can accept the risk and have the stomach AND skillset to back yourself out of whatever predicament you end up in).

I have an install with netlabs-exp for testing as well as this install with netlabs-rel. I simply wrote a wrapper that sets things up and uses the netlabs-exp install.
Code: [Select]
set HOME=w:\home
set UNIXROOT=k:
set LIBC_BREAKPOINT_ABORT=1
set QTWEBENGINE_CHROMIUM_FLAGS=--single-process
set BEGINLIBPATH=.\.;k:\usr\lib;%BEGINLIBPATH%
set LIBPATHSTRICT=T
simplebrowser.exe > simplebrowser.log 2>&1

Adjust as needed. I run it from the directory where I installed the simplebrowser.
Bitwise does recommend not using a production system for testing this.

Indeed I need to install the ffmpeg-libs library. He hadn´tused it before. Then I passed the dll to highmem, and when I tried to execute the simplebrowser.exe, I generated a trap file. Finally reinstall qtwebtest5_4_pub and with normal memory it is working perfect.

It seems you have missed all these discussions about the problems different dlls in different versions in different directories will give. Especially for people who do not fully understand how OS/2 loads (and not unloads) and uses dlls. And the possibilities and restrictions of LIBPATHSTRICT and BEGINLIBPATH.

Believe me, when you want to test experimental software like this it is much easier for you to set up a separate ArcaOS partition with the experimental repos enabled than start playing around with dlls coming from different zip files.

Hi Andi,

It seems you have missed all these discussions about the problems different dlls in different versions in different directories will give. Especially for people who do not fully understand how OS/2 loads (and not unloads) and uses dlls. And the possibilities and restrictions of LIBPATHSTRICT and BEGINLIBPATH...

To the contrary, I have read all of that and will happily point out that while the README for this test install does recommend NOT using a production system, it than happily proceeds to walk you through a whole bunch of EXP repo installs. For those in our group who do not understand the potential problems this could cause the README warning should have been a LOT more explicit, as in: DO NOT INSTALL ON A PRODUCTION SYSTEM!

So here is the thing: the DLL problem (RPM caused or not) has been an on-going issue for us all for quite some time. This I think we can all agree on.

While an approach like what Dave has deployed is probably the closest one can get to having a reliable combination of test and production configuration in a single running OS2 install (having established the virtual walls through separate paths and environment variables), it is un-reasonable to expect that everyone else is savvy enough to do so on their own.

Andi, I agree that a separate TEST partition install should be used for testing here. But in cases where this is not available the README should be more explicit about NOT doing it otherwise. Beyond that, if you still want to plug away, a single ZIP deployment would allow you to start the test immediately post a clean boot, where none of the other application specific DLLs have been loaded.

Recognize please what I am suggesting here: "clean boot" means having NO apps started prior to testing the QT browser, so very little - if any - DLL conflicts short of the LIBC based foundational stuff.

So why is this a problem for me in the first place? Actually, I have no issues building the required "safety box" configuration, have been doing this for a while now with numerous pieces of software. My issue here is that for the QT Browser alpha test to be relevant and produce reliable results you need a much wider audience to participate. I question the wisdom of expecting good representative results from those who test on separate partitions only...how big of a group is that in our already tiny OS/2 community?
Title: Re: QT5 simplebrowser
Post by: ivan on February 11, 2021, 02:51:02 pm
I have to agree with Dariusz regarding the supply of the external DLLs that are required from the experimental repository for the simple reason those DLLs can change being experimental.  At least, if the DLLs were supplied we would all be starting from the same point.

In my case I have a computer for running things that are questionable.  It is equiped with 3 removable disk trays and when I want to try something it is a matter of just slotting in a bare bones bootable disk plus a disk for for the test program/s.  If it doesn't work or something goes wrong all I have to do is remove both disks, reformat them and re image the boot disk and I'm ready to start again

The work on the browser is slower than anticipated. I listened to someone say it would be out in 2017. Now, listening to what is being worked, I wonder if 2021 is realistic goal. Further, how can the project survive financially? I'm crossing my fingers that it will continue, and that the community will contribute enough to keep Bitwise in the OS/2 browser development business.

In any case, anyone who wants to could provide the DLLs needed. This forum accepts attachments up to 25MB.

I use a test system just for this project. It is set up exactly as the readme suggests. I already know a system with .exp could be modified beyond repair.

The new web engine render some web pages a lot faster than Firefox. There are still features missing. Some web pages will not render. While I need access to those pages, I'd rather have Bitwiseworks continue on their current path to provide a browser that works on some web sites. Firefox 45 has some pretty serious flaws.

After the new browser is released, I hope some of the missing pieces can be developed to pick up the rest of my critical websites.

I am getting system traps and process traps. I expect these to become less with more development time.

And how often do you think you have to explain people even here at os2world forum that f.i. AOO quick starter or smturbo or cups or .... did load some of the dlls although the users persists on saying 'I didn't start ANY app' after boot?

It's simply unsupportable and unreproducable environments you're asking for. Problem reports of such mixed systems are useless at best. Based on past experience usually a lot of wasted time. YMMV. But it's up to the ones who do the work to decide how to get usable feedback in the most efficient way.

The IPC (Inter Process Communication is being worked as we speak. After the otter browser will be compiled. So we are not that far off.

As for it taking longer I have said before. Its has taken longer because we have very
few human resources and a large part of the delay has been caused because of things we could not for oversee before the project was started.  See the readme.txt of the QT browser for more details.

Its true we also have had the risk of BWW not receiving funding. I have been working to try and keep it going.

While its a free world a lot of people in my opinion take the free development of BWW simply for granted.
As I mentioned in my Warpstock US presentation we checked the logs of the Netlabs RPM server.
In about one month (during the summer break). We had about 600 unique IP addresses connect with Arca Noae Package Manager to download
updates. Knowing that by far not everybody uses ANPM on a daily basis that gives a much better inside in the private users using
OS/2/ArcaOS. Its a bigger number then we thought it is.

But as always only a small portion contributes financially to BWW.

Based on the amount of email addreses OS/2 VOICE has collected via Paypal for donations I would say maybe between 5 and 10% of the
OS/2 community has donated. The rest download free of charge....

Again donations welcome, they are badly needed:

Please specify with the payment its for QT sponsorship. And while we would like to accept checks, please do not send checks to VOICE.
Its extremely expensive to process a check for small amounts. If you send a check 20 Euro it would most likely cost just about the same amount to process it.

Its not an assumption sadly. Do you know how much money for BWW came in via OS/2 VOICE for the total QT project ?

http://www.os2voice.org/images/Financial_Report_2019.pdf
2019 25.400,00 Euro we sponsored BWW with.

2020 report is still to be published, but we collected 20.600,00 Euro over 2020.

Effectively VOICE is the pushing locomotive behind collecting funding for BWW.
We gladly help BWW!

I would say, I personally donated during the last almost 3 1/2 years a fair amount of money, donated some hardware and collected money with Thomas Müller together during our last User Meetings in Cologne (this is NOT fishing for complements).

I may be one of the minority of users whom still use OS/2 instead of ArcaOS (I would and do advise everyone asking me to use ArcaOS) and what makes me thinking about the browser is this:

It is recommended to use the 14.202 Kernel, this Kernel is (for sure for some good reason) permitted only to use in combination with ArcaOS.

The conclusion as for now is for me: The new Browser will not (reliable if at all) run on OS/2 or eComStation Installations. I wonder if in the future the same will happen to a possible NVMe Driver i.e. ArcaNoae has to decide on its own, while having to follow the contract given/made with IBM.

But, will ArcaOS be the only future for OS/2? I am still very happy to use the AN Software Subscription for Drivers to have an up to date Warp 4.52 without ANPM (this is my special vision of using OS/2).

Hi Roderick,

It is not easy to make donation due paypal doesn't provide any option to pay without a paypla account. This is a paypal setting issue. I has this issue with some US shops and after they corrected they setting with paypal assitance, all was made right.

Rémy

I missed that posting because of being at work. I working on donation.os2voice.org. Its not finished yet but then you can pay witrh creditcards without a Paypal account. The website is however not live yet!

Based on the amount of email addreses OS/2 VOICE has collected via Paypal for donations I would say maybe between 5 and 10% of the OS/2 community has donated. The rest download free of charge....
Roderick
I don't do Paypal, paid direct, so be careful with your assumptions.

Roderick

That makes me wonder, Roderick. I hope you do not count the Donations made by all the attendences,Thomas Müller and me during the OS/2 user Meetings, the collections I started on OS2.Org (the german community) and the money I donated myself as "Donated via OS2VOICE". That would not be true.

I would guess this collections here named "from us" should have bring some amount of 10.000 - 13.000 Euro to bww.

You are not the only locomotion that put a lot of efforts in it, and it is some kind of frustrating and demotivating to read this.

The New Browser is NOT an "OS2VOICE ONLY" Project!

About the need for the 14.202 kernel, which IBM does not allow to be separately distributed I believe. The main reason for needing it is to not leak high memory. It should be possible to preload and keep the DLLs loaded like we do with mozturbo, to avoid the issue (or reboot more often) and Remy has written a general purpose DLL loader which should work for the DLLs.
Drivers that are written by Arca Noae such as the NVMe driver should be available for subscribers. I can't talk for Arca Noae, so this is a guess.

While its a free world a lot of people in my opinion take the free development of BWW simply for granted.
As I mentioned in my Warpstock US presentation we checked the logs of the Netlabs RPM server.
In about one month (during the summer break). We had about 600 unique IP addresses connect with Arca Noae Package Manager to download updates. Knowing that by far not everybody uses ANPM on a daily basis that gives a much better inside in the private users using OS/2/ArcaOS. Its a bigger number then we thought it is.

Please Roderick, remove this from your speech. It sounds like Microsoft counting the statistics of MS Office piracy and crying out loud they could be making more money.

The RPM server statistics are not potential donators, if you ever think about charging money for the libraries on the netlabs RPM it will backfire. It may get money the first two months and later squeeze more people out of the community. That is called "bread for today, hunger for tomorrow" in simple words. In my experience only desperate salesman uses that strategy to cash their check at the end of the month and burn the customer for any future relationship within the company.

The donations are what they are, and I don't like treating the OS/2 community members as cheapo bastards living at the expense of software developers. It is better to inspire people to support the project by showing how important it is for our community and how much progress had Bitwise showed, instead of insulting the community saying that they haven't given enough.

The modern browser is an important project for the community and a lot of people had chipped in knowing that Bitwise can deliver. I can only suggest to change your speech into something more positive and don't get frustrated.

While testing the new QT based browser an issue was found that the highres timer (while not part of the ACPI specs) the ACPI.PSD provides this functionality. Dmitry had opened a ticket with AN and the latest ACPI a modification was made to the highres worked better (?). I do not know what was modified. As for the kernel the issue is that the if you want to load more programs next to each other with the new browser running you need to run highmem.exe to load the code segments of large programs such as the new browser high. See the readme.txt for details.

Kernel 14.202 has fix that when a DLL is loaded high and its unloaded so the memory is actually released! Other IBM kernels do not have this feature.
So you will run out high memory pretty quickly if you load and unload DLL in high memory....

Oke I did not mention the efforts via os2.org that is completely true and a valid statement Sigurd, I had forgotten about that writing
late in the night. Sorry about that!  In 2019 (I would need to check our records). OS/2 VOICE funded work on the Firefox 45 brower for 2 or 3 months in 2019. All payments made to BWW are listed in the financial year reports as one number, not split up per project.

What is was trying to make clear is that every bit of spare time I had left I spent on collecting funding for the new browser.
I also initiated the project with BWW in Ocotber 2017.
http://articles.os2voice.org/category/software/11-sponsorship-needed-for-new-os-2-web-browser.html

At that time it was already clear to me we needed todo something and it was either Pale Moon or QT based web browser.

Joop mentioned that I should be careful with my assumptions. Well I will explain further in my follow up post what my conclusions are based on.
Just to clarify.

Sorry for not mentioning your efforts.

I want to acknowledge the people who have donated to VOICE or BitWiseWorks over the years to support using our browser. Roderick in particular has raised a lot of money by convincing people to donate. I offer thanks to him and to everyone who has donated.

Now with the new browser is an opportunity to fund BitWiseWorks in an ongoing manner, by selling software subscriptions.

But as a potential customer, I'd be skeptical of the new browser, and want to try it before buying. I believe that a well run subscription program would be voluntary. If you follow my recommendation, the customer can download new versions free of charge, but would be reminded of their responsibility/opportunity to subscribe.

Any more forceful will push people away from using OS/2, and that is contrary to the mission of OS2VOICE.

So here is the thing: our platform no longer (for some time now actually, but we all know this) seems to have the momentum to support multiple paths of approach and possibly multiple concurrent large projects. I think that is clear to all.

While I have no issue with donations (having done so multiple times over the years, sometimes to big projects, at other times to small one-off type of things), I am rather troubled by a what appears to be a disjoint between the only two big players on our platform, that being: ArcaNoae and BWW.

Roderick, as such, I'm curious if you can provide an update on what's being done to develop a consistent approach to "new OS/2 browser" by these two large players? I do not know if your role in this context allows you to provide such a summary (from a content awarness perspective as opposed to NDA type of limitation), but if anyone can, I think that would provide a badly needed level of clarity to the community.

Look, we - the "little people" - can do our best to sponsor, but in my mind it is clear that the product will not see the light of the day (in a finished and GA level quality, thus usable as a replacement for current FF 45.x) unless a different approach is found. That currently missing approach is a consistent funding and support model being collaboratively developed by AN and BWW.

In the meantime, what you have done so far is a pile of work, no doubt about it, and it takes that special "love" for this OS/2 thing that I think all of us share and can readily agree on. That is greatly appreciated!!!

But from the bigger picture perspective, am I the only one thinking along those lines?

Firefox Version 45 was and is the last supported Version of Firefox on OS/2 or eCS or ArcaOS.
The QT based browser that is currently being worked on is the only modern browser that will be supported.

At least that is my last information.

SYS1804: The system cannot find the file KAI1.

That means you don't have libkai-2.0.0-1 installed. Older versions of libkai only contained kai0.dll .

A batch file with necessary YUM commands to instal Simplebrowser would be useful.

The readme.txt states whats needed:

....
3. In ANPM choose the menu option
Manage -> Yum Tools -> Quick Install
In the input field enter the text: QT5
and let ANPM install all the QT 5 packages that are listed.

4. From ANPM again choose the "Quick Install" menu option.
In the input field enter the text: ffmpeg-libs
and let ANPM install all the DLLs that are listed.

5. Repeat the above steps with:
   libevent
   minizip
   libxlst
   libkai

* 6. It is recommended that you now reboot your system! *

....

its also recommended to use this command to launch the browser:

sh run.sh

If i use simplebrowser.exe instead it starts but traps when trying to open a url

Probably setting QTWEBENGINE_CHROMIUM_FLAGS=--single-process in your environment is the big one as multi-process wasn't working in this build. Eventually each tab will have its own process so a tab crashing shouldn't affect other tabs.

FFmpeg libs, hopefully there is also a ffmpeg_llegacy_libs or such package to also install. The legacy libs are used by Firefox etc.
Note that if you install the whole ffmpeg package, it'll pull in SDL2, which is likely fine.

Read the readme, which says to start it like "sh run.sh", without quotes, which will set up your environment for the simplebrowser to run in single tab mode and also write a log file.

Running simplebrowser.exe from the command line has no effect, nothing happens, the command program appears half a second later.

Changing VirtualAddressLimit had no effect.

First start an OS/2  command prompt and change to the directory that contains simplebrowser.exe. Then execute

Code: [Select]
sh run-check.sh
That creates a file named simplebrowser-check.log. Post or attach that file.

Second execute

Code: [Select]
sh cleanup-caches.sh
from the same directory. That clears your browser cache and cookies. After that start the browser by executing

Code: [Select]
sh run.sh
in the same directory. That creates a file named simplebrowser.log. Also post or attach that file, after you have closed the browser again (otherwise its file size is zero).

Looks like you have an old version of libcx without shmem support, try to reinstall it and reboot after.

VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=3072 did had an effect. Now I get also a "bus error" message.

To come to this point, I had to run through the "YUM hell". It would be so much easier, if there would be an YUM cmd script where all dependencies are checked and installed.
My readme.txt has only 872 bytes (21-1-5) and has not the information which has been quoted here. It seems there is are different ones.

Dave is right: you probably don't have the correct version of libcx installed. Required is version 0.6.9-2 from the Netlabs experimental repository. You can check which version you have installed by running

Code: [Select]
yum list installed libcx

VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=3072 did had an effect. Now I get also a "bus error" message.

To come to this point, I had to run through the "YUM hell". It would be so much easier, if there would be an YUM cmd script where all dependencies are checked and installed.
My readme.txt has only 872 bytes (21-1-5) and has not the information which has been quoted here. It seems there is are different ones.

You have downloaded the file qtwebtest5_4.7z from Netlabs. The later file qtwebtest5_4_pub.7z contains the updated version of readme.txt (only readme.txt is updated - the rest of the files is the same as in qtwebtest5_4.7z).
Two typos in the updated readme.txt: there is no run.cmd (use sh run.sh instead) and in step 5 package libxlst should be libxslt.

Looking at the problems here it appears that 90% of them would have been solved if someone thought to make available a zip file that included ALL the odd and extraneous DLLs at the beginning.  What we have is a mish mash of real DLLs and experimental ones that are not guaranteed to remain the same in the long term - not a good way to present a new browser for inspection by the public.

I might consider this new browser if it ever gets to prime time and is supplied as an all inclusive package - until then, anytime forefox on OS/2 fails I will use firefox on linux.

First all I think it was pretty obvious from the name and the readme this is preview version nothing of prime time browser.
As for a stand alone ZIP file neither BWW or VOICE has the time todo this.  And while that package was released more DLL's where being updated.
Sorry releasing a ZIP is simply not an option with the extremely limited human resources VOICE and BWW have.

This release was intended show the community something after long delay what we have. The delay I explained already was because a lot of unforseen setbacks.

As for DLL"s remaining the same that is also the case with LIBC RPM updates they also get modified a few times a year the DLL's.
Long term LIBC DLL's that remain the same (if that is what you mean) will not happen. We keep getting more and more needed updates
if we want to port software to OS/2 and ArcaOS.

Sorry Roderick, I was a bit harsh with my comment.  I put it down to the fact I hurt after the idiot driver tried to push me through my closed garage door.

I do stand bt my comment that a zip of all the required DLLs should have been provided as well as the QT5 program - there are some of us that don't load all the unix programming materials you know.

It was hard work for me finding the correct combination of libraries that would simple brower work. Finally I started with a clean ArcaOS 5.06 installation and followed the instructions of the README. It worked, and very nicely, smoother than Firefox 4.8 and allowing me to get into a lot of sites that didn't accept Firefox anymore. To avoid future problems, I freezed the update by copying the \usr\lib folder to a new name, and even porting this new folder to another PC. In case I have problems with the standard \usr\lib, I use SET BEGINLIBPATH with the freezed folder so I have no impact from any updates of the libraries.

The only significant flaw I found in the simplebrowser is that in some input fields of some sites you cannot type any information. An example for this is gmail.com which will ask you to provide your gmail user. There is no way to input any information in that field. Perhaps this problem has an easy solution which will much enhance the usability of the simple browser until we have the production version.

Regards
Martin I was busy at work, that is why I am responding late. I still think a response is proper to give.

From my perspective my speech is and has been positive. I have been writing news letters on articles.os2voice.org about the new browser.
I think I have done everything I can do to inspire people.

What I was trying to make clear is that I have been collecting a large amount of the money needed for the new browser via OS/2 VOICE.
But that OS/2 VOICE has 100 email addresses in our of people that donate/donated. Some donations went via the German
OS/2 community other via the BWW webshop. The biggest part of the donations came via OS/2 VOICE to BWW

Martin wrote:
"The RPM server statistics are not potential donators, if you ever think about charging money for the libraries on the netlabs RPM it will backfire."

Why are people that are using ANPM to download RPM packages from rpm.netlabs.org not potential donors ?
The point is that just about all the DLL files in rpm.netlabs.org are from BWW.

I BTW never mentioned anywhere that the RPM files would go behind locked doors.

Nobody is a salesmen here. In 2019 Silvan put in about 7000 Euro privately to help BWW pay for Dmitry his salary.  OS/2 VOICE board members do not get paid for work, just like board memebers of Warpstock US.

When I see that about 600 people download RPM updates from BWW and over a period of 3 years I get about 100 email addresses....

All I am pointing out is that of the 100 email address we have about 7 to 8 people paid about 70% of what VOICE has sponsored BWW
over the last 2 years... Yes one person donated more then 10.000 Dollars over the last 2 years...

This message is/was an SOS to the OS/2 community again that rpm.netlabs.org needs money to be updated by BWW.
And if people can not give a donation, especially in the corona crisis I can understand that.
I however see how many donations come in...

The new browser can be downloaded free of charge as the current plans are. But it will have screen it you can not remove unless you make a
minimal donation. Also updates and support will only be provided. So basically the idea is the same with the browser.  Sell it as Open Office binaries how they are currently distributed.

Until we reach that point, we need more donations to finish the browser.

Roderick

If you use ANPM and update everything as specified you'll have the smoothest ride to test the simplebrowser.
I think it is very good as one can use it on sites that require modern browsers. It play movies on play sites but there are some glitches here and there that can be addressed with more work. Libraries have no value on their own, but they're crucial for the applications that use them to do what we need in the end. The simplebrowser is one of many applications that use a bunch of these libraries to turn all the advanced stuff into useful tools for everyday use.

The only package that cause me problems is libicu in combination with OpenOffice 4.1.7, that use something available in libicu 56.2 and earlier that doesn't exist (or behave differently/use other function parameters/...) in libicu 65.x and the new 68.x. One could install libicu 68.x and harvest those files and copy them to the simplebrowser folder.
Downgrade to libicu 56.2 and from that run OpenOffice and the browser without switching library.
There's however no instruction where to report such findings... so I'll keep my mouth shut, unless someone can tell me where to report it and how.

Anyone got a script to extract the files needed?

Martin and Roderick both have interesting points, I can see both, and more.

I've donated money over the years and also some to this project to get a new browser engine. I do however struggle to see how (especially non core) projects can produce something useful without funding as we can't expect forever "time donations" by developers as perhaps was possible in the past. The more people that share the same interest and goal, the better as many small streams of money can form rivers. A company can't print money to pay their workers, but has to rely on its customers to accumulate money to improve the product or service it provide.

Technology that we want/need to port but is out of reach due to their heritage in other systems that deviate more and more from OS/2 design, may have to be paid for. Such work that can't wait for a volunteer developer to do in his/her spare time three or four years from now. It's not easy to port applications (or write from scratch either) for OS/2, and therefore not "free" (as in no money) just because it is free on another platform. Chunks of code has to be rewritten to run in OS/2 and that is what we chip in to pay for. More work has to be put into it as other systems develop away from the traditional way. Free software take time to rewrite/recompile/port... and thus cost money to get on this os on a regular basis. But I'm pleased that there are highly skilled developers that can be paid to work to produce software.

Do include us Martin in the vision how to keep development pace while maintaining developers with the right skill set in combination with current and up to date software.

//Jan-Erik

Yes, (after I SET LANG=en_US or yum crash in libc until they fix it) but libicu-legacy does nothing.

Now (a few hours later) I've unpacked the icu*.dlls with Zippy from the rpm package in C:\var\cache\yum\netlabs-rel\packages\libicu-56.1-2.oc00.i686.rpm to the program folder for OpenOffice D:\Programs\OpenOffice\program and now I can run Writer, Firefox, QT Browser, Thunderbird and SMPlayer at the same time (though perhaps not under that heavy load just yet). But it is awesome!

The crash has been fixed (see https://github.com/bitwiseworks/pthread-os2/issues/11 and https://github.com/bitwiseworks/pthread-os2/issues/12)  and pthread 0.2.4-1 can be found in the Netlabs experimental repository.

Hi

Today I got some little time to test "Qt5 simplebrowser", on my second try it was very stable with YouTube.

But I wanted a more challenging test. I tried the open source webconference tool Jitsi. https://meet.jit.si (https://meet.jit.si)
I created a conference from a Windows machine and access like an additional user from "Qt5 simplebrowser". The first time it crashed instantly, but the second time it worked nice. I was able to see and hear myself.

Please notice that from the ArcaOS Qt5 simplebrowser you can not transmit audio or video, but I was able to hear and see (myself) streaming from the Windows machine.

But, will ArcaOS be the only future for OS/2? I am still very happy to use the AN Software Subscription for Drivers to have an up to date Warp 4.52 without ANPM (this is my special vision of using OS/2).
I agree that I also don't think legacy OS/2 users & ecomstation users should be "locked out" of the castle like criminals.
Unfortunately the os/2 community seems to be taking a bit of a dark tone as of recently from what i've seen.

While I appreciate all the great work Arca Noae has done - Lewis Rosenthal has strongly implied on this forum in the past that he considers people that don't keep their subscriptions "active" bad customers.and that kind of attitude is being displayed here as well.

I get that the platform needs resources but it's definitely getting old - since the only thing keeping me using the OS is my interest in it :) which could disappear rather quickly. I've spent more money on the platform then I really even have gotten back.. for example I purchased access to openoffice not once but twice and haven't even really used it yet at all.
I purchased my arcaos iso and then forgot to download it on time and ended up "updating" just to get access to my iso again.
I purchased RJ CD writer when I was using ecomstation but the license apparently doesn't work on Arcaos... since it was locked to ECS... so that money was just down the drain.
If anything people owe me money back from the return on investment i've gotten as of lately:). (I jest there lol since I don't expect money back from my own decisions)

It would be better to motivate people with positivity from the way I see it..... or I could start sending people a bill to punish all the companies that iv'e foolishly spent money on :D :D :D :D :D.

I think what Lewis was kind of saying is that they had people who purchased a license for ArcaOS. Then they have a subscription and they let it expire and then 2 or 3 years later want to buy a subscription when they need support.  The way I understand if you let your subscription expire for more then 12 months you pay a reinstatement fee.  At the end of the day the ongoing development has to be paid somehow.

That said I get the impression ArcaOS is really picking up on a lot of its backlog. Wifi drivers are in development, new Uniaud, NVMe support, UEFI and GPT support, USB XHCD support.

As for your point about RSJ I can comment on RSJ to some extend. eComStation came with a limited version of RSJ and it had to tied to eComStation somehow. I know because I made the deal with RSJ uears ago. That said the full license of RSJ you can/could buy should just work on ArcaOS. Its the version that came with eComStation that only runs on eCS. Did you accidently somehow install the version from RSJ for eCS ? Or was there update version that was also tied to eCS ? I can not remember 100% for certain. Its about 15 years ago.

RSJ might not work with the OS2AHCI driver, is that case ?

RSJ CD-Writer works just fine under ArcaOS here. You know, the final version of RSJ CD-Writer was built with IBM CSet++ 2.1. RSJ was always quite particular about the environment and it still is, since nothing really changed for a long time. I only use it for USB since the ArcaOS DVD Tools is much better anyway, for my needs.

Hi David

I appreciate your concern and I understand that you like a lot the platform. Sadly the  dark tone that you talked about it is not new, as a community we had a frustration of being left high and dry by several companies in the past.

How many times did OS/2 died?, and this is a personal opinion with approx dates.
1) Around 1996 - When the rumors started inside IBM that Lou Gerstner was going to stop OS/2 development.
2) On 1999 - When IBM announced that OS/2 was only going to be updated as Server
3) On 2004 - When IBM announced OS/2 end of marketing
4) On 2006 - When OS/2 reached the End of Life.
5) On 2007 - When we didn't know what was going on with eComstation since we didn't hear anymore from Serenity Systems
6) On 2014 - When we didn't know what was going on with eComStation since we didn't hear anymore from Mensys.  (It was bought by XEU and we didn't hear any news from both)
Others may add other important milestones and dates that they consider an OS/2 death. In fact, all these deaths is what made me an open source advocate, since with open source we can inherit in a legal way the source code and reduce the risk of the next death.

So, maybe you get the frustration that we have from the past.

David, since this is getting repetitive, I suggest you should remain posting this kind of comments on your "Well ArcaOS 5.0 is probably the last version for me. (https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,2832.45.html)" thread, since your latest posts where not related to the "QT5 simplebrowser".

Roderick
Yeah I get that funding is needed. But I don't get the attitude that a previous paying customer is "bad". I mean they made money on that original transaction. Could they have made more from that same customer.. yeah but on the other hand it's not their money to decide how it should be spent until they earn it.

Regarding RSJ - I have a key file and it didn't work with ArcaOS. I looked at the text of the file and it specifically references ECS so I think my license was limited to ECS. Which kind of bothers me since I purchased it for the full price.
To be fair I haven't contacted the developer yet - maybe they would work something out with me.

Um.. actually it was related to the simple browser. There was an implication that more people downloading the browser then donating was somehow bad - and I connected it to the attitude that people who previously purchased arcaos licenses are also being painted as somehow "bad".
AKA A negative tone that very much is relevant to the thread.. I'm just saying that tone is getting tiresome. Like stop counting chickens before you get the eggs. And if you get the eggs than have enough grace to be thankful not resentful.

But on the positive side if/when I plan to get anther ArcaOS license it will be from Neil Waldhauer :).. and I recommend others do the same.

People consider negative what I wrote, at least I think you are refering to what I wrote.

I will put it simple. I do not consider it unfair to appeal to people to make a donation to Bitwise works for the development of software they effectively provide free of charge. The warning has been coming for years for BWW that they need funding in order continue development.
Now the funding is running out. The new browser and most of the DLL's in rpm.netlabs.org are being ported and maintained by Bitwise Works.
It will get finished but it will be slowed down. We are pretty close.

Does the community want this development to stop yes or no, that is the key question ?

What I pointed out is that nobody had a clue how many private OS/2 we have. It seems nobody tried to figure out to even start to understand how viable asking for sponsorship from the community. And to be honest I also did not know. Arca Noae never released any numbers how many licenses they sold of ArcaOS. I do have an impression of the size of the community when I worked at Mensys until 2013.

I came up with the idea to see how many people used Arca Noae Package Manager to download updates from rpm.netlabs.org.
These updates are being provided free of charge to the community by BWW. Now that not everybody makes donation I can understand.
There are 500 to 600 users (measurement over 6 weeks during a summer vacation). I personally think we have way more private OS/2 users but not everybody has ANPM installed or they do not run it. I have seen users at Dutch user group meetings that do not know that ANPM is in the
System setup folder in an ArcaOS installation. My overal impression that we have at least a few thousand OS/2 users world wide.

While BWW is German Limited company in 2020 Silvan Scherrer, co owner of BWW, put in 7000 Euro of his own money to contribute to the salary of Dmitry so he could be paid to continue development. Effectively it runs at a loss BWW. Over the last 2 months I put in 1000 Euro to help getting the new browser out.

Here is the interview with DMitry and the explaining how big the percentage is of people donating.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eltHLPz-VBA
The portion about the new browser and the financial position of BWW starts at 04:09:05.
Portion about the financial stuff starts at 04:40:00.

Basically OS/2 VOICE collected about 25000 Euro of the money invested in the QT /webkit port. That is about 55% of total amount of money
spent on this project. The amount of people who donated to VOICE are about 100 users. What I am trying to make clear is that we have pretty good inside how many people are donating. And of the 100 donors the bulk of the money came from about 10 people.
One person donated 10.000 Dollars.

If we indeed have a few thousand users in the community and 100 people are donating
well that is pretty low if you ask me...

But do you guys want to see the development for OS/2 by BWW stop yes or no ?
And if you guys do not want to stop how do we collect money then ?

Even if people could donate 10 or 20 Euro's a year that would help a lot, but that is not happening...
I am not marketing guy, I am tech guy.  If the above is presented negative, well sorry.

That is the reality we are in.

Hi Roderick

I insist that the problem is not the goal, or raising money for it. The problem is how you are requesting the funds. Instead of complaining about the people that do not contribute, you need to inspire people to help. Do it in a positive way and do not fall into frustration. I think you did good things to raise funds, but trying to crunch statistics to find the "bad people" that do not contribute will make you look desperate instead of helping the final goal.

Martin the positive articles have already been published, from my point of view at least. BWW has been warning for years they need funding.
Anything wrong with how I wrote the QT update news letters on articles.os2voice.org ? Then let me know. Where they to negative ?

Martin I have tried to inspire people with my newsletters but it did not work, that is bottom line.

Is it positive that Silvan pays 7000 Euro out of his pocket in 2020 to keep Dmitry working on porting code ?
I paid 1000 Euro in total over the last 2 months to the BWW webshop from money I made during my dayjob.

I can not speak for Silvan I would cetainly be willing to continue doing this donating money to BWW.
But only if more people would contribute. For me and the small group of donors that have kept the funding flowing it does not feel right.
Even if people would donate 10 or 20 Euro's.  And i am not expecting everybody to be so wild and crazy about OS/2 as you and me are. But it would be big encouragement if more people made smaller donations.

I am not chruncing statistics, its rather simple. I rather try to make an *estimate* how many people are left in the OS/2 community. I always hear/heard that the community is to small to fund these type of projects. But we have _no_ clue how big the community actually is, or do we ? That is exactly why I asked Adrian for ANPM statistics from rpm.netlabs.org to make somewhat of estimate how many private users are left. Instead of making wild guess how many users are left world wide. Then to find out OS/2 VOICE has 100 email addresses of paypal donors was kind of blow to me away... Then consider that we collected the bulk of the money and we have 109 donators. Me and the people at BWW  also need some positive developments to be encouraged for change...

BWW has been asking for years for extra donations and making clear what BWW does for OS/2. So how was that message not delivered possitive and clearly ?

I am tech guy with an IT background and I am not marketing expert. I have some idea how to communicate but the message is simple.
We have been asking for money to continue the OS/2 development, we are running out of funding.
We think its possible to continue doing this development...

So tell me what is missing in the messages we send out then via articles.os2voice.org ?

I am out of idea's.

What is getting me tired, and sometimes getting on my nerves, is that you still count everything "as collected by OS2VOICE". As I mentioned already in my Post in February a lot has been an effort of the german os2.de users, where we started several donation campaigns.

I do not know what the reason for this kind of "counting" is, that is beyond my mind, but as I said in February, one can not do things in a more discourageing way.

As I estimated then, "we" collected at least 10.000 to 13.000 Euros, I even donated one Lenovo X250 Laptop in 2019 during our User Meeting in Cologne for a raffle....

I do not want a special "thank you" from bww because the money they got is really well invested money. It is OK the way it is, that is fine. But allways this "OS2 VOICE" make it possible and so on...

You are doing a really well job, Roderick, but I guess you are not the only one. There is, what is left of it, the whole community supporting this project. Everyone as he/she/it can.

When you mentioned it last time, I corrected that. I  estimate VOICE collected 25.000 Euro (about 55%)  In my Warpstock presentation yesterday I did credit the German community. You can find that in the youtube video stream the attached presentation.  Note the presentation slides where put togheter during dinner on Saturday evening. So I hope its accurate enough.  It should have  stated German speaking community BTW.

Here you can find the slides included after the interview with Dmitry.

The presentation slides are located at around  04:40:00.

For historical records this pie charts represents the sponsorship to BWW for the QT/webklit engine browser project.

I was not able to watch Warpstock Europe when you presented this slides, and have to apologize for being to harsh with my words.

But I still think it is better to name it a community and not "only or main" OS2VOICE project or goal.

And please keep in mind, several suffered heavy economic losses because of the Corona Pandemie.

For me, i.e., it was and is more important to Support the home for homeless Kids in Chenai/India, that some people here Support for 15 Years now, than having a new Browser for OS/2. While the home has to be closed for now because of goverment restrictioncs we donate for Rice, Walter and food, to keep people alive.

I do not mention this for fishing for compliments, jutst to bring the actual situation of donating reasons in a bigger context.

Hi again Roderick.

The things that you are doing good, are fine. The ebay auctions, the newsletter, Warpstock demos, that is good and positive. Raising "44880 €" for Qt5/new browser port is a record for the community and it had never been done before and according to Bitwise it required to reach 49000 €.

But, saying that there are "1000 bad users", that "leach the rpm server", is not going to make them contribute, even if it true or a fact. It is even backfiring, because it can make people that contributed feel bad thinking that they are being used by that "1000 bad users/leachers". Please understand that this is not something about money, facts, statistics, it is about how you are making feel the people.

You may be right, but  you are getting people annoyed. Stop posting this kind of things and start posting good things about the goal and the potential, because you are starting to loose credibility (or you may be burned out because you are taking this goal as death or life).

The rest, please help bitwise works to raise the money, THEY CAN DELIVER !!!!
It is 92% now.  (https://www.bitwiseworks.com/)

I am perfectly aware of the situation people in poor countries are in duo to Corona. Especially if you have little to no income. We can complain here in Western Europe but we get vaccines within no time and the rich countries had plenty of money to backup companies. People in poor countries where the health care system is less robust and the government financial support is not around have a very hard time.

I will think about naming it differently this collaborative effort. I just thought OS/2 VOICE is well known in the OS/2 community also for people not checking OS/2 news that often.

I was hoping more people would contribute 10 Dollars is welcome if just more people would do that. And yes the German community has contributed percentage wise bigtime.  But I also get the impression its small core group that donated.

Roderick

P.S. I just checked it seems I am almost 18 years now chairman of OS/2 VOICE. I am getting old :-)

Specifically this part:
Ivan: If your subscription is in force, then you have no rush. The point was for the folks who let their subscriptions lapse (think: early adopters, who purchased ArcaOS 5.0 in May of 2017 with six months included subscription and then never renewed). It's simply not fair to everyone who does renew on time to have people go three years and then re-up for another year at a fraction of the cost of a new license. Everyone else is funding development in the meantime. (And frankly, the vast majority of ArcaOS licensees do renew early or on time, probably because we continue to crank out new stuff and we work tirelessly to address trouble tickets. </shameless plug>)

The part about painting those opting to buy a subscription license later is somehow being "unfair" to others doesn't sit well with me.
I don't think someone who uses their ECS license or their early ArcaOS license owes other people anything.
They paid for the product in the first place. A person that is using something they purchased legally are not a leech.

About the donation part of this thread.

This clearly reminds every of the need of a good marketing plan for a fundraising for any project. Marketing is surely a job by itself, and (un?)fortunately not mine.

Two other places may be mentioned for donations:

I agree with Mr Gay. This is a marketing problem.

I donate a portion of Blonde Guy profits to BitWise every time I sell a computer. An enormous number of people in the world do not buy a Blonde Guy computer. I do not disparage or insult them. Instead, I try harder to make a computer that they want. I thank my customers for buying a computer.

Before I worked at Blonde Guy, I worked at a computer company run by engineers. We had a lovely software library we sold for $7500. We struggled to make money. But we hired a marketing person. He sold one copy of our software. For $2,500,000. I learned an important lesson on the role of engineering and of marketing in business.

If I could make one concrete suggestion, it would be to sell space on the About... page. Donors can be named for a fee.

It's great to read and hear such positive news that there's a new browser on the way.

Several of the sites that host OS/2-ArcaOS projects and products seem sparse at communicating where to do what. Why not suggest improvements politely, perhaps in a separate thread?

Use the software as soon as it's purchased, otherwise it will be obsolete or not function as the world around evolve in one or the other direction. Better to learn new things in small steps now, than to have to relearn all together when *** has redefined how to do this or that. Some things may otherwise become such big hurdles to overcome.

So positive information has only reached so far, news-letters and the like may be technical and not build the insight that component/library/application X is vital in this sense (bla, bla, bla) as part of XYZ that in turn give the base to run on current/now only available/modern hardware.

The technological leaps ahead to close some of the gaps that has to be performed mean more overhauls of parts of the OS. Is it the need to see that that specific update/fix/improvement suit each individuals need, so he/she is only interested in that part? Then we'd end up with a box full of holes, as several things depend on each other. Arca Noae/OS2Voice/BitWiseWorks focus on those parts that we may take for granted. All that do cost and you and I are the ones to ensure those updates gets developed. I need to buy a new computer as the old one is... well, old and start to fail (hdd latest). I think I should buy one, try it out and report my findings to an/bww.

To do all that I need a new browser that can access my internet bank, online computer store etc. so I sponsor to get the updates.

Surely there must be more ways to attract attention.
Easier ways to sponsor is a goog start, a marketing person another.

Hi

I also agree that there is some marketing/sales problem here. And it is great that we turn the discussion into possible solutions.

From what I see on a software company the important thing is having a repetitive income so you have have the money resources. I found that Patreon may be a good platform for repetitive income for people/companies that make open source software.

Bitwiseworks currently have 22 patreons that give them $198 monthly. That is not enough to pay a developer, and not enough to tip a developer to have him/her interested. https://www.patreon.com/bwwbitwiseworks (https://www.patreon.com/bwwbitwiseworks).  What it can be good is to try to raise that sum to at least $1000 at month. It will require 100 users giving $10 per month to Bitwise works. But it can be interesting for Bitwise works to also offer something to their patreons like access to download Bitwise binaries like openoffice and future update of the browser.

This is just an early idea and it will depend more on Bitwise if they want to promote patreon income in that way.

The way I read your response I am not 100% certain you understand what Lewis wrote.

What Lewis his opinion is that some people purchased a license of ArcaOS 5.0 and when half a year later the 6 month the subscription expired and did not renew the subscription. Doing that is a user his right. The included OS/2 license remains always valid.

What Lewis mentioned is that he thinks its not far if people to renew the ArcaOS subscription after not having paid for it for 3 years. The customer then buys a new subscription and would access to version 5.0.6.  It seems BTW recently Arca Noae modified the policy and when you let the subscription expire for a long time you pay an extra fee for getting access again.

Hi
This is nothing new on the software market.

IBM, for on premises licenses, there are this three states.
- 1) NEW LICENSE: You buy new licenses with 12 months maintenance.
- 2) RENEWAL: The next year you do a RENEWAL for 20% of the new license cost to have the right to software updates and tickets.
- 3) REINSTAMENT: If you didn't bought the RENEWAL, if you passed the renewal period, you will need to get the REINSTAMENT, that is like 60% of the license cost to have again the right to software updates and tickets.
(This used to apply for OS/2 Warp too, back on the late 90's)

Oracle is worst in my opinion, his way of reinstament is charging you all the years you didn't pay and charge you at once, if you want to have again the right to software updates and tickets.

I've been trying not to interject into this thread, but I have to get this off my chest.

I for one am a little tired of the constant calls for sponsorship of bww - and the non-mention of other folks who continue to put effort into OS/2 development.

There are many other developers listed at https://www.arcanoae.com/product-category/support-sponsoring/ (https://www.arcanoae.com/product-category/support-sponsoring/) who also a great job - some of the projects aren't as 'sexy' as a web browser, but they're still worthwhile supporting.

For example - KO's ports of VLC - being able to play videos is a pretty fundamental requirement of any OS these days; Tellie's ports of various Qt utilities.

Cheers,

Paul.

Paul, everyone...

...I for one am a little tired of the constant calls for sponsorship of bww - and the non-mention of other folks who continue to put effort into OS/2 development...

That's an excellent point.

All my $$$ contributions, with the exception of the previous AN/AOS Software Subscription or application specific purchases like NetDrive, PMMail, or OpenOffice, have gone to individual authors. These are usually the smaller $20-25 range "injections" into the "system", since I figured most of us still do OS/2 for the sheer challenge/love/joy of it, and long gone are the days of making profits. So I feel like that approach recognizes the on-going individual contributions.

Now, on the subject of the QT framework based browser I will say the following: it is very dishartening for me to see that BWW and AN appear to be un-willing to work on this major undertaking together, or at least that's my perception today.

Sigurd brings up an excellent point: if AN is NOT providing any sponsoring, why is that?

Look, I will turn the tables on this. I have been participating in the AOS Testers List for some time now. The stuff I can test I do, and I always do it very thoroughly, but to do so it takes time. Granted, one cannot participate in all the testing efforts, heck the latest wave of UEFI is a perfect example of this (I simply lack the hardware), but whatever I can test I certainly spend the time to do so. We all know the old saying "time is money", and it's absolutely my choice to continue to donate to on-going AOS developments, but in some ways it is a certain kind of investment, no?

Therefore, it sure would be nice to see AOS provide a somewhat intangible ROI on that time donation and get behind the idea of getting us a more recent Web engine, after all, vast majority of today's "day to day" computing has moved almost entirely into the web space.

Anyways, much speculation here and we are all guessing to an extent, but perhaps what would help is some clearing of the air by our major platform players?

Echoing what others have said - I think it's more crucial than ever for marketing to be considered. That statement goes for the wider community of OS/2 developers as opposed to solely focusing on the just-as-important work from Bitwise.

On the note of fundraising - I've witnessed that charitable groups running a monthly or quarterly auto-renewing "set and forget" subscription model seem to garner a lot more success than those which only have the option for once-off donations, even if with reminders to donate again.
Additionally, perhaps it would be a good idea for every new installation of ArcaOS to have a once-off welcome screen promoting and crediting the various groups and people who have created or ported the software which help make this OS what it is today, as well as a recommendation to donate to them so they may continue their work.

One final thought on the train of attracting interest and subsequently, funding for projects: I personally have doubts that the proposed Retro-Gaming-Release of AOS will even produce the sufficient hype we need in attracting new users (consider DOSBox's prevalence and popularity + OS/2 Support). I particularly refer to the younger community, I am yet to come across an active user of ArcaOS or OS/2 in my age range as of yet (20-25) and I feel it is a market we need to work hard to target in order to ensure the longevity of this OS.

Thank you

If I understand it correctly Roderick estimated 500-600 unique users based on unique IP addresses in the logs. I thinks this is a false assumption. In my area ISPs use Carrier Grade NAT for the majority of their users. I think this is a common technique in other countries too. At least here in Europe. What this means is, a single user gets a new IP address from the ISPs pool whenever his xDSL or LTE modem connects. Usually at least once a day as most ISPs forces an automatic reconnects at least once a day. Even when you leave your modem running all the time.

So at least I (and I guess the waste majority of users) left a different IP address in the logs every day when I made a yum update. Please let me know if Roderick uses more advanced techniques than counting IP addresses. If not, his values are probably much to high and the active community is much lower than he expects.

If you count the first three octets of the IP address it where 500 unqiue IP addreses. Count all 4 octets it where just over 600 unique IP addresses.
Remeber that this is an indication in my opinion but I described that already.

I've been trying not to interject into this thread, but I have to get this off my chest.
Paul: KO Myung-Hun, Tellie and you have a great attitude and I hope others developer can have just half of that good vibe.
Don't feel bad, it is just that bitwise is out in the market requesting donations to complete a big project. For the moment it is the only one that have came out and said "I can do this project, but I need this much".

Roderick
Well like I said I might have been too sensitive about it.
I understand that the license is still valid. I just don't like painting users who opt not to upgrade as somehow being unfair to others.
I don't have a problem with him opting to charge a larger fee if they decide to upgrade later - it's his business to price as he sees fit.
Just don't like the way he said it, is all.

These are the IP addresses I had during only one month this year. Maybe I've overlooked some doublets in the list, maybe I've deleted some unique ones while composing it. But this is only for my xDSL connection. In parallel I had also changing IP addresses on my LTE connection different to that.

I donated again. But Bitwise is now part-time for this project. This is a major factor in the practicality of using ArcaOS in a day to day way. The platform would be healthier if we could fund BWW at a full-time rate.

Hi

I just checked the Bitwise site and it says "As of 05.08.2021 we collected 46880 €.", which is 96% of the 49000 € goal.
It is a record for the community raising that money and I had taken a lot of effort from all (the community and Bitwise). I really hope to see some public beta soon.

Keep in mind that the 49.000 Euro was an estimate.  More smaller setbacks have been encountered.
But you can follow this on the different Git pages of bitwise works.
Currently a new LIBC version is being worked to fix more issue's for the browser. But we are moving closer.
The clipboard support (copy paste) is next on the schedule. So I am hoping next week somewhere a first beta can be send out to the first group of people. Making the new Otter Browser the first RPM based browser to be installable on OS/2.

It should be noted that you need ACPI 03.23.16 or higher. From what I understand this is because of some update to the highres timer.
Also ArcaOS kernel 14.203 will be required to prevent your system from crashing.  But this will be documented in the readme file.
Note that the webkit dll (about 240 MB) needs to be loaded high. So you need a kernel that supports this!

Roderick,

How can I qualify to be in the first group that receives the beta?. For the last month I have been using the QT5 simple browser for most of my day to day transactions, including my 2 bank and 3 email accounts. Also I have been able to purchase in different stores paying with my credit card.

I run native ArcaOS 5.0.6 and at the most I start my Windows 7 once per week.

And of course I have done modest contributions to the project compatible with my age and income.

Hello

FYI: Bitwise works collected the "49000 €" donation initially required according to it's webpage.
- https://www.bitwiseworks.com/ (https://www.bitwiseworks.com/)

This is a never seen record for the community and it took efforts and time of all of us.

I'm really looking forward to see Qt5 stabilize and the new browser, so future projects can be suggested by Bitwise works.

The 49.000 Euro was an estimate, in the mean time loads of other DLL's where updated and added to make the new browser.
As for the beta program I am picking up on that again...

Things have slowed down mainly because of me... I have been having some things happen in my personal live that took away my attention from the browser.  Silvan and Herwig have both had to deal with a private issue.

And while funding has flowed into the webshop of BWW donations via OS2VOICE have mostly dried up. Also duo to my private situation but in genereal the level of donations has been dropping. This has resulted in Dmitry also seeking other work. I can only we say, we warned of this impending issue...

Anyway the browser beta is moving forward again!

That's hard to hear, on both aspects: the personal challenges and Dmitry having to look at another income stream. I hope the personal situation for all gets better, for what it's worth.

In the meantime, I noticed that there were some AOO updates made (another thread), so I hit the BWW site and updated my donation for that, and while there I bought a couple of QT5 & browser development units along with a separate GCC porting donation.

Not much, but if that helps even the tiniest bit, it was worth it!

Hi Roderick

Bitwise works is completely free to write down a new set of development goals for the Qt5 and new browser port and call it like "phase 2", set a funding goal, time frame and request donations for it. But it will be important for them to release a working beta version of the browser to keep the community motivated and show that good things were produced with the first "49000 €" raised.

Roderick stated the beta is advancing, so let's hope for the best.

About setting a new goal: I could image that it is difficult to port this application in a stepped approach, for example with reduced functionality as an initial drop and then adding things. That is possibly more work than porting it all at once.

Effectively the Otter Browser has been ported. One optional things BWW was thinking of adding (when the USB stack of AN has all support needed) was to look at adding webcam support to the browser. (The browser needs to know how to talk to which device driver).

The goal of currently limited beta test is to improve stability, it still crashes the browser and the stability needs to be improvement from my perspective.

Here, after the last big update to netlabs.rel, my system became very unstable. Lowering the Virtualaddresslimit helped but I still see way more crashes in SeaMonkey and other things hanging. This makes me wonder if the instability is library related.
I also noticed trying to build the Simplebrowser that it uses -fpmath=sse to compile. I had to remove that from the Mozilla builds as it created a weird issue  in nsIdleServices when it took the code path when the screensaver wasn't installed. That was a 100% CPU issue, repeatable after the same time passed. Compiler optimizations can introduce bugs.

It's weird, I updated nss* and nspr4 quite a while back on my netlabs-exp partition. The browser started just vanishing, no trp, no popuplog entries and attempting to trace it down was futile. Now on that partition, after updating libc etc, the browser frequently crashes in various places, usually related to committing memory in various places.
This partition using netlabs-rel became very unstable after the big update, fixed partially by lowering my VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT from 3072 to 2560 but still so frustrating that I formatted it and restored a backup, back to stability.
Seems that a combination of the libc and NSPR4 and NSS updates led to the extreme instability. Previously I had tried the newer NSPR4 and NSS on this partition and had the vanishing browser thing so rolled back.
I've also tested by rebuilding the browser with the updated NSPR4 and NSS and things were stable.
So now I'm testing rebuilding NSPR4 and NSS and just replaced the NSPR4 DLL's as a test. So far things seem stable.
I continue testing and updating the other files. Anyone who wants to play along, here's my newly built NSPR4 DLL's, they're Pentium 4 with -mtune=generic raw builds, so still have the debugging stuff included, could be lxlited, my build didn't create dbg files for these. Unlock and replace the ones in @unixroot/usr/lib and reboot to use them. Haven't tried marking them for high memory yet. If you want to revert, use ANPM or YUM to reinstall.
Be good if someone testing the Otter beta tests too.

Once I tried   4.23.0-1 and 3.47.0-2 respectively (when they were in EXP)  - my FF become to unstable.

I just have one question has there ever been any hard evidence for fiddeling with the virtual address limit really increases or decreases applications stability ? As in something of debug trace to point that this *actually* trace. To be honest I have a hard time feeling this contributes to making applications stable or more stable.

I can see where increasing the amount of virtual memory you can have an application leak memory longer. But reducing virtual address limit ?

Hello
According to I saw the NSPR * I consider the vibration of OS /2 which is 31.25 Hercios.
And probe with this value in
SET NSPR_OS2_NO_HIRES_TIMER=0.0003125

I have it proven very little, but I was hung once the computer. But I think it is for an excess of temperature 98-99 degrees centigrado.
Doing system overload tests.
The graphic test of the Sysbench was improved by 11% from 74,000 to 65000 in a 17 inches.
I think this can be interesting, maybe not for the stability you are looking for

I always use VAL = 3072. I have never seen corelation between VAL value and system/applications stability. System may not boot if:
  - VAL = 3072 (means System Aria is just 1GB);
  - and too many drivers;
  - and JFS cache is not correctly set;
  - and treads/processes are not correctly set;
such cases I have meet a few times.

Seems I did have one system where it did seem to make a difference, but maybe I'm misremembering. In this case it may well have been a coincidence where the reboot fixed things.
I'm not sure if IBM finished the high memory support and a theory is that too high a VAL value on some hardware might intrude into kernel memory space. This system for example has 3,241 MB's memory accessible to the system, which doesn't leave much room above 3072 VAL value for the JFS cache etc. I'd assume a video card could eat up more memory at the top end.

For NSPR_OS2_NO_HIRES_TIMER, it only matters whether it is set or not and only affects programs using NSPR4, mostly the Mozilla apps though IIRC, VirtualBox also uses it. Here's the code from nsprpub/pr/src/md/os2/os2inrval.c,
Code: [Select]
    if ((envp = getenv("NSPR_OS2_NO_HIRES_TIMER")) != NULL) {
        if (atoi(envp) == 1)
           return;
    }

VAL and virtual memory do not have any relation to physical memory. System will have exactly the same layout and amount (about 4GB) of virtual mem whether it has 4GB or 512MB of RAM installed.

This system for example has 3,241 MB's memory accessible to the system, which doesn't leave much room above 3072 VAL value for the JFS cache etc. I'd assume a video card could eat up more memory at the top end.

Few people know that this virtualaddresslimit was already build into Warpserver advanced. It was only later this code was moved into the _W4 kernel. In my book the code is finished. IBM introduced high memory for stuff such as DB2, which could use this high memory.
Now does the code contain bugs, possible. But we need to have proper debug data for that.

VAL and virtual memory do not have any relation to physical memory. System will have exactly the same layout and amount (about 4GB) of virtual mem whether it has 4GB or 512MB of RAM installed.

4GB's of address space minus PCI memory address space (including video memory) equals 3.2Mb's of address space in my case, and then minus kernel address space, things like the JFS cache. As Dariusz mentioned in a separate thread, he had to lower VAL when he enlarged the JFS cache to get the larger cache to take.
I also discovered that with 1.5GB's of ram and VAL set to 3072, the swap file is limited to 2GB's of virtual memory, likely due to signed variables somewhere. The crash said swap file full even with lots of disk space on a JFS volume. Linking xul back around FF10 really did need the full address space.

I thought it was introduced in WarpServer and at first only 2GB's before being extended to 3GB's.
As for bugs, seems most of the kernel fixes since IBM left development have been high memory related, as well as the undocumented problems with parts of the OS/2 API not working with high memory, see os2safe.h for the current list. Many were found the hard way when we started using high memory for Mozilla.
It is easy to believe there are other bugs somewhere. Even Windows 32bit discouraged using more then 2GB's of address space, though I believe mostly due to buggy device drivers using signed ints

Edit: I'll also add that Arca Noae has decided on a 1536 default for VAL. When I asked Lewis about it, he just commented that they figured it was safer. Can't remember if he said it was from experience or just due to caution.

Dave, you've mixed all together :) .  Yes, you can see 3.2GB of total RAM accessible to system  (even if 4 GB of SIMM modules are installed) because of PCI dev, BIOSes, APICs, HPET and video adapter (may be something else). But this is physical mem. Kernel operates by 32 bit phys address only - that is why 4GB  can be addressed and no more.

All virtual mem in summary is always 4GB in spite of how much physical mem you have.

Virtual memory is divided into tree parts:
 - low (under 512M) (private and shared)
 - hight (between 512M and VAL)(private and shared)
 - system (between VAL and 4GB)

PDDs, FSDs, PSD, kernel, loader, JFS cache and many other things  are in system memory.

Use of system memory almost doesn't grow after boot.

System compensates lack of RAM by swap file.

I think you and Dave are in fact saying the same thing though, except that both of you are coming at this from a nearly 180deg opposite starting points.

For example, as Dave pointed out re: my JFS cache size experiments. Running with VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=3072 I could not enlarge my cache beyond the 64M that I initially started with. Going to something much larger, such as 256, 512 or my current 736M size required me to lower the VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT setting in order to (I believe) free up the 'system' area.

So yes, if my machine has a total accessible memory space of 3.2G, and my VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=3072, I have very little room there to work with. Once I drop VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=2048 that opens up a boat load more space, which is how I can pull of a 736M JFS cache.

Therefore, there absolutely appears to be some limit (by design I believe) that won't allow the virual memory use to grow beyond what physical-(minus)-system total ends up being.

:) No. It is not so.

By lowering VAL you INCREASE system arena (where JFS cache is situated) and same time you DECREASE high mem.

So yes, if my machine has a total accessible memory space of 3.2G, and my VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=3072, I have very little room there to work with.

One more time  -  "total accessible memory space of 3.2G"  does not have any relation to VAL.
Even you have 512Mb of RAM installed, with VAL=3072 you will have 1GB system arena.

For ex.  most of kernel's objects are ALWAYS (in spite of installed RAM) situated at the very top of VIRT mem:  0xFFE7700 - FFFC0000h. And just a few of them  mapped into specific phys mem (lower 1Mb).

Therefore, there absolutely appears to be some limit (by design I believe) that won't allow the virual memory use to grow beyond what physical-(minus)-system total ends up being.

It only appears that  ALL virt mem cannot be bigger than 4GB.

Yes, and this very statement is the crux of it. The point I am making, and perhaps what Dave was trying to say as well, is that it is the VAL setting itself that controls how much of that accessbile memory space is actually available for non-system use.

Case in point, speaking for myself only although I suspect the greater part of our OS/2 fan-base may also be covered by this, the physical size of installed memory on my machine is 4G. What this means is that I am no longer focused on the hypothetical amount of process space I can support, and in case the physical memory runs out the appropriate contents will be shuffled off to the swap file in order to free up memory for the newly loaded process.

Instead, given that I have 3.2G of addressable physical memory visible to OS/2, I am focused on how that memory is being allocated by the kernel and of course how the user adjustable settings/controls impact this.

The undeniable result is that VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT= setting dictates how much memory the OS/2 kernel will allocate towards it's "system" use, and by doing so make that amount of memory unavailable to the process side of it.

Seriously...the JFS cache size use-case is literally a "black and white" test here. Unless I allow the system to allocate LESS physical memory in support of the VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT setting, I cannot use that memory to implement the sort of "system" controls I am telling my machine to utilize.

Whiel I think I understand how this work, I do find this to be counterintuitive, expecting that should a VAL be set sky-high I should in fact be able to request a 1G JFS cache, have the system successfully allocate that space and accordingly pare-back the total process space memory available. Clearly that is not what happens.

I think the real memory and address space just happen to correspond with 4GB's of ram installed. If I removed some DIMM's to only have 2GB's of ram, there would still be 3.2 GB's of address space available to OS/2, system and program, and perhaps 1.5-1.75 GB's of real memory (due to the integrated graphics using real memory) available before the system starts swapping. Lower VAL like Dariusz did for a bigger JFS cache and even less real memory available before swapping.
BTW, the lower 1GB of address space is half kernel memory as 16 bit programs (and 16 bit kernel code) can only access 1GB of virtual memory, 16 MB address space, so the upper half of the lower 1GB is kernel, device drivers and such. 16 bit DLL's and data needed by them also have to go into the lower 1GB of address space.
The i386 can actually use something like 2TB of virtual memory and in theory, if internally using 64 bit variables, we could have 99 DOS sessions, each, using DPMS, allocating a GB of ram. Lots of swapping and the CPU's page tables might run out unless using 1MB (or was that 4MB) pages instead of the current 4kb page size.

Kernel always use ALL available PHYS mem (reported by BIOS). There is no way to influence this.

(OS/2 kernel has a bug and cannot operate with some specific regions of RAM and loader from Dixie is able to hide them from the kernel - but this is totally different story.)

Setting VAL you control VIRT mem layout only (not PHYS). You can use http://os2.snc.ru/product-SystemLoad.html to see the layout.

Whiel I think I understand how this work,

To have full understanding pls refer to Intel  doc and see how does work  phys to virt mapping.

I do find this to be counterintuitive, expecting that should a VAL be set sky-high I should in fact be able to request a 1G JFS cache

Of course, it is  counterintuitive. And I have no idea why you came to conclusion  to make VAL sky-high. As I said, JFS cache situated in System Arena. So to have more space for JFS cache you have to increase System Arena, is't it ? As I also said, System Arena is between VAL and 4GB - so you have to set VAL as low as possible (say 512) to have max size of System Arena (3.5GB).

We have gotten quite a bit off-topic here (given the QT5 & browser focus), but I will wrap up my input into the conversation by stating the following: VAL is intended to provide the additional memory footprint for applications that need the bigger "box" boundaries. My remark re: "counterintuitive" was meant to say that since that setting is there, it should NOT override and/or allow the system settings, such as the JFS cache for example, to be impacted by a user specified VAL value. After all, unless AND until I can successfully boot I have no chance to run an application that may in fact require such a large VAL in order to operate successfully.

The "why" this hasn't been resolved in the kernel/whatever logic is what I find to be "counterintutive".

Anyways, good discussion, I genuinely wish we had more of these kinds of topics in a "underneath the covers" type of a forum perhaps?

For NSPR_OS2_NO_HIRES_TIMER, it only matters whether it is set or not and only affects programs using NSPR4, mostly the Mozilla apps though IIRC, VirtualBox also uses it. Here's the code from nsprpub/pr/src/md/os2/os2inrval.c,

Sorry, when restoring a previous copy, had less colors defined in the resolution and gave me a better than expected result. But errors when the browser is closed are new values . With this modification

VAL is intended to provide the additional memory footprint for applications that need the bigger "box" boundaries.

VAL is intended to divide upper 3.5GB of virt address space between  high priv/shrd arena and system arena. Kernel takes VAL  value into consideration much earlier then FSD/PDD are loading (and JFS cache  allocating) - so no way to calculate  how big system arena has to be to accommodates all the parts of this puzzle. At the same time  nothing is preventing user to check how many free mem is in system arena after boot and adjust VAL accordingly to pass unused addresses from sys arena to high priv/shrd arena.
