Hi Sigurd.

1. I found that I needed to turn off all power control for the wireless NIC, in windows, on my T43, or it would run for a while, then quit. It seems that what windows sets, gets remembered in eCS.  I found a setting in the NIC settings to do that so it was set separately from the windows system power controls. I don't have access to the T43 any more (my brother has it). It also has the problem where it would not work with WPA2, but did work with WPA (WPA2 worked in winXP, of course). I think there is a problem in the GENMAC interface between the windows driver, and XWLAN, which means that it will not get fixed. WPA seems to be reasonably secure. Hopefully, Multimac, for wireless devices, will sho up sooner, rather than later.

Hi Doug,

1. One more observation here: Late at night Yesterday I did play around with XWLAN just to see what happen -> one was to try

->right Mouse Button click on XWLAN widget -> Public Hotspot -> connect to hotspot

even if I do not have a hot spot around. For a second in the eCenter "DHCPSTRT.COM" was visible and the XWLAN widget icon changed to the one with the small TCPIP icon in it, saying "Public Hotspot - 16%; IP Interface is being configured: lan1"
and the "TCPIP Interface" is not greyed out anymore.

That leads me to assume, that using my "Profile 'Zu Hause' " does not start the DHCP process ?!

Might this information be of help as I do not have much clue about this?

Hi Doug, Jan, Pete etc,

it is great to have such a quick and rich in content discussion!

1. Hm, I do have a patched BIOS for the X200t that diables the WLAN Blacklist. So I installed the Intel WLAN 4965 mini PCI Express card. Ecs 2.2 detected it right at the initial installation process, but it started to work as I wrote once I changed Helperw.exe to the top of the config.sys.  But - unfortunately there is still some weird behaviour here - a problem you have a couple of times about, IIRC, I can scan and see all the routers here, but it failed to connect using WPA2. Using WPA instead worked, but only for some times, mostly not. I am still not able to figure out what does prevent it to do so. Mostly the "TCPIP Interface" option of xwlan is greyed out, and I can not ping to the router, please do see attached pictures. Id did work two years ago with my first X200t, I guess I have to take a closer look at the BIOS Energy options.
Please see pictures WLAN and WLAN3

EDIT: Once I changed in BIOS to "Balanced" as energy scheme in BIOS it did work - at least for some moments... -> see picture WLAN3, but I am to tired to test more for today, more tomorrow

6. I will look into the BIOS of the X230t AFAIR there are some options for the USB 3.0 behaviour...

EDIT: Please see picture X230tBIOS2 -> with that BIOS option "Disabled" I can use the 3.0 USB Devices as USB Devices 2.0 with eCS! Before I had the setting: "Auto". I do like USB 3.0 very much, especially with USB Sticks under Windows 8 -> so fast!

That you adressed to Jan:

5. Yes, the same constallation here, Intel Display Audio and Realtek -> the same as with the Samsung Serie 7 Slate. I have to wait what Paul might offer on ideas.

7. At least the "Shutdown beep" went away once I disabled USB widget (that caused some very serious boot hangs and hard hangs while using in the past).

2. I have decided that the Sunny Icons feature causes too many problems, so I simply don't install it (I will try again, with the GA version). There is a selection in the desktop properties to turn that off (Display-> turn off Default, and select Normal). It doesn't seem to prevent other annoyances that I have seen with that feature.

Thanks, I found it :

Disable Default
change "Icon Display" from "Big Size" to "Normal Size"

Hi Doug,

thanks, sorry for my short replies!

1. I will try your suggestions later today and report

2. Thanks, will try this later as well as I do have the X230t not at hand now

3. -

4. -

5. I am already in contact with Paul and may make progress today

6. Thats a very good point! I in fact did not try to use the 3.0 Ports because I thought those are not "backward compatible" on OS/2 :-). For Windows: with 7 or 8 I do not have to switch them on manually, they are allways "on". Maybe something in your Windows "Power scheme" is changed?

7. -

8. If you watch may latest video with the X230t I tried to show that it is working right at the beginning, but it is not to be recognized very good as I just made a quickshot and it was during daylight. It is really something I do appriciate!

9. Yes, the same with the X230t and this memory hole. I guess this is so since the Sandy/IVY Bridge generation. I was able to get rid of it using OS4LOADER instead of the eCS OS2LOADER on the Samsung Slate with Sandy Bridge. There I had the full 4GB of RAM (minus some for the onboard graphic). But on the X230t OS4LOADER fails to boot (even the latest edition - so far), maybe because I have 8GB of RAM there. The same with the other LOADER - QSLOADER, that is around. In addition it seems to me that those both loaders make a better job at all than the one from eCS. AFAIR I pointed Mensys to this QSLOADER and they might want to merge some things from it to overcome the memory whole as i.e. the QS Loader is written from scratch - the file is about double as big as the "usual" OS2LOADER. So maybe with the next eCS 2.2 beta there are some news (do not know as I do not get much information from there -> close to zero.) Even though I will reduce RAM to 4GB and give OS4LOADER a try with eCS 2.2 again later on.

Hi Pete,

thanks for answering, I am still not able to use the quote functionality as it ought to, so I just write my answers following the numbers.

Yeah, I want to have the eCs 2.2 clones ready for the meeting in Cologne end of November this year :-) so I still have some time left ;-)

1. I installed GENMAC 2.2 once again manually after the initial installation,  but it did not work for me again. Then I found the hint in Lantran.log. I guess the manual installation did found helperw.exe in config.sys but did not "realize" that it was at the wrong position.

2. Yes, these are the so called Sunny icons. But I want to have the option to use them with the clone but all the attempts to change to other icon sets failed. At may have to deinstall Sunny icons at least.

3. Yes, DOSBOX is better in this case, it was just for information

4. -

5. Yes, I did try this as well, sound with the X230t did only start to work at all (even with no result) once I used a tailored startup.cmd with the unimix parameters. I did exam unimix -list and all the possible parameters, but ....

6. at least 2.0 seems to get better and better

7. I already updated the ACPi to 3.22.02, AHCI 1.30, latest USB. ;-) Sorry, did not mention it.

8. or lying in bed. :-) I did not know how usable this feature is till I used the X200t again after using the X230t :-)

I am working on tailored eCS 2.2 clones for the

- Lenovo X200t Tablet
- Lenovo X230t Tablet

at the moment.

I do have some questions and observations, that may have been noticed by others before but I would like to ask/state them here once again. Help is appreciated!

1. Observation: WLAN and GENMAC installation failed to work -> Reason: the eCs 2.2 beta config.sys is sorted, the 'helperw.exe' file needed for the GENMAC is placed in the middle of config.sys, once I moved it to the beginning of config.sys it started to work

2. Question: I do want to change the "" sheme for desktop icons as I prefer the "usual" one - changing it via "Appearance, Icon Theme" failed, there are still the icons. How to change them?

3. Observation: while on the X200t 'DOS Window' and 'WIN-OS2 Window' both need time to start for the first time, on the X230t both do not start at all (both Laptops installed with Panorama). Will give SNAP a try on X230t, on X200t it is working, but I still leave 'Panorama' as this is the prefered one by the developers; and I do expect SNAP not to work with the X230t

4. Observation: Adjusting the Panellight works on X200t via FN keys, on X230t not

5. Observation: Sound on the X200t works, on the X230t it does not (producing some kind of noise) -> I may have to ask Paul for help ;-)

6. Observation: USB 2.0 on X200t works great, on X230t as well (the USB 3.0 of the X230t are not supported, as expected - but one have at least ONE USB 2.0 there)

7. Question: once I shut down or reboot eCS 2.2 on the X200t I get a beep, on the X230t not. Someone with the same experience?

8. Observation: It is really nice to have the Keyboard Backlight with the x230t, the X200t does not offer this functionality

It is a great initiative Sigurd! I would like to join at the end of November.
Finally I enabled the network card of my laptop!

Danke - Thanks! The feedback is far better than expected, we are very delighted about this! And it seems that there will be at least one (or more :-) ) developer as well.

I might get the X230t ready to use with Touch and Pen as well, as Wim Brul thankworthy once again will take over the driver development!

And yes - we will show something really exciting and new (!) at the meeting there, most of the OS/2 or eCS users have never seen before on the this plattform! Something, that really might suprise people and opens new opportunities :-) (No, this is not a joke nor advertisement)

Stay tuned for more!

Setup & Installation / Re: UEFI & SecureBoot?
« on: July 31, 2013, 07:49:58 am »
I struggled with a UEFI system (IBM X Series) server, and eCS 2.2 beta simply does not recognize the SATA hardware. It fails even in compatibility mode with

OS2AHCI driver version 1.29
Found AHCI device: Intel PCH AHCI (8086:3b22) class: 010601 bus: 0
devfunc 0xfa
OS2AHCI: couldn't register [MM]IO region: (rc = RMRC_RES_ALREADY_CLAIMED)
No adapters found.

I had the same problem with "my" OS/2 Warp 4 system - it did not occur with eCS 2.2.

Roderick Klein "oracled" he did know the reason for this but gave me no hint nor helped me with this - because of using Warp 4 instead of eCS 2.2 I guess. That slowed down my motivation in general to share my experiences, but at least I pointed them to the download source for a different OS2 Loader they may use to improve the eCS included one.

The solution for me was to add the switch to use only IRQ up to No. 15 (I guess it was /vw ). Therefore I have one clone "with" the /VW switch and one without, and one with OS4 Loader and one not.... :-)
Hope this helps.

What did help in some cases was to replace the eCS Loader with the OS/4 Loader - but you have to replace the kernel back to 104smp as well, that might cause new problems (in my case it turned out to be stable and worked - and the best of it - it does not have or show the "memory gap" at 512 MB - please see other of my threads for this)

For the records:

I just got a new X230t from Lenovo with 8 GB Ram, i7 and so on. There is still the option to disable Secure Boot and UEFI in the BIOS, a least to emulate the "Legacy" BIOS.

While eCS 2.2 latest beta failed installation several times because of complaining about the HDD (where the eCS 2.2 demo while booting does not), it worked quite well once I installed it using the Clone method and DFSEE.

It may be worth a try for those trying to install eCS 2.2 on modern hardware if "usual" installation fails to create a clone of a working system and restore it on the new hardware. This will be shown in Cologne in November as mentioned. This is safe and time saving (takes about 5 to 10 minutes).

This allways worked for me.

Are their any license issue's doing it that way? Just curious. Additionally, what about those who can not attend Cologne? Is their any documentation on doing it, I thought I read it somewhere but it escapes me at the moment?

No, there will be no documentation, sorry. I might make a "How To" Video about it sometime but I am not sure. As long as you just install the clone on only one PC (or according to the number of license you own) I do not see any legal problem. I would like to advice to license and therefore support DFSEE as this is really a great peace of software.

I am thinking about making a bootable DFSEE USB Stick with the clone images of eCS 2.2. and Warp 4 on it....

Events / Presentation/Workshop planned!
« on: July 08, 2013, 08:15:25 am »

even though we do not plan to have a strict program I decided to offer a presentation/workshop regarding my experience in Installation of OS/2 and eCS on modern hardware.

Topic:  Mission possible - the Klon wars

Time: starting at 14 o'clock
Duration: about 90 minutes (with a break, just as we like)

I plan to show the installation of OS/2 and eCS 2.2 on modern hardware using AirBoot Manager and DFSEE with the Cloning method. It is an (realtiv) easy and very fast way to install and avoid the problems of the "usual" installation method. Installing AirBoot Manager gives the opportunity to install next to Windows7/8 or other operating systems. I will discuss the Pros and Cons of this method, as well as the shortcommings and problems with eCS 2.2 with hardware.

I will demonstrate it on this hardware:

- eCS 2.2 on a fanless Intel Atom Mini PC
- OS/2 Warp 4.5 and eCs 2.2 on the Lenovo X200t Laptop with Digitizer support
- OS/2 Warp 4.5 on the Samsung Serie 7 Slate PC with Digitizer and Finger support

It is planned not to be a monologue, I would like to got through this together with the audience more like a workshop.
Questions and suggestions are welcome!!

The language will be German, in case we will have foreign visitors I will try to use English in addition. There will be no handout nor presentation material, you have to make your notes on your own :-) - so we have less work with this.

Is there a demand for such a presentation/workshop? Please let us know your opinion - Thank you very much!

The rent contract is signed today - so green light  :)

Some more informations:
If someone would like to give a presentation - please do email us because we need to control and organize this a bit. Thanks!

Regarding rooms: If you plan to stay overnight the Internet search field does only show "one bed in 4 bed room", but that is not true for visitors of our event. We would like to advice you to book via phone as if you mention our meeting you will have the possibility to book single or double rooms, if you like and as long as those are availiable. :)

Stay tuned for more.

Events / Advance Notice - OS/2 - eCS User Meeting Cologne 30.11.2013
« on: June 29, 2013, 11:59:34 am »

this is an Advance Notice of the private initiative to host an OS/2 and eCS User Meeting in 2013, in Cologne, Germany.

As Thomas Müller and me have not been able to participate in Warpstock Europe for the last times we decided to meet each other to talk and share experience about OS/2 Warp and eCS, especially on modern hardware.

As it makes more fun the more users would participate, we decided to book a room on our cost in case some more users would like to participate.

The figures are:

- Date: 30th of November 2013, Saturday, from about 11 in the morning till 20 in the evening (or longer if needed ;-)  )

- Place: the youth hostel where Warpstock 2006 was hosted -

- We already arranged the room "Lille" there, where about 30 people will have seats and tables. There is WLAN access and a Flip Chart as well. Thomas and me fully pay the rent, so even if there will be no one else participating it will be no loss for us (But hopefully some will show up)..

- Therefore there is no need to pay for entrance nor need to registrate. We want to have the organisation work as less as possible. You "just" have to pay for your journey, the stuff you might want to drink or eat and the room you might want to rent in case you want to stay overnight. Even though it might be a good idea if those, who already decided to take part could inform us - we do not expect more than 30 people to come - but if so we would have a problem as there are no other, bigger rooms free that day. But I guess even more than 30 people can use the room. :-)

- There is no "program" planned, it is just to share experiences and so on

- I would like to offer free of charge installation help if needed for OS/2 or eCS on Netbooks, Tablets and Laptops - if I have the ability to. If you would like to have help it may be a good idea to send me an email before so I can be prepared for this.

- This is not planed to compete with Mensys, Warpstock, User groups or whatever, it is just a privat initiative - and everyone interested in this is invited to come!

- IMPORTANT: As everything is already fixed it is about 99% that it will take place and will happen - but I have to wait for the hirecontract that will arrive the coming week to sign it and send it back. So - if you plan to come please wait untill I have the hire contract signed - I will report this as soon as it will happen, I think till the end of next week.

- If you want to stay overnight the youth hostel gives you the possibility to, but there is a limited amount of rooms. You have to book and arrange this by yourself, the link above shows you the way. But I would advice you to wait with this at least till the end of next week, when the hire contract is finally fixed

- Thomas and me appriciate all hints, critics and suggestions you might have regarding this idea, please feel free to state them i.e. here with this topic. In theory there is the possibility to give a presentation as well - if someone would like to do so - as a Beamer can be rent for 25 Euro.

-> And - if you like - at that date the anual famous Cologne christmas markets have already started so you might take the chance to visit them in the evening as well.

We will report as soon as there are more news.
