Hey guys,
I'm many have read posts of a build of dooble existing and is waiting on an rpm.
I couldn't understand why a zip wasn't being provided, so I spent a little bit of time this morning building it myself, the result is https://smedley.id.au/tmp/dooble-2022.04.04-os2-20220424.zip
Note I've had the browser close on me a few times, no idea yet if these are dooble or Qt5 related. There is nothing in popuplog.os2 not in the exceptq folder
edit: I would like to add that this wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for the work that Dmitry has put into the port of Qt5.
Enjoy!
Cheers,
Paul

Thanks Paul!
-
My build crashes now and again at a breakpoint, I assume that it is an OOM (out of memory) error.
I see commits today to force single process mode as well.
-
Paul, did you have problems with the lack of mlock and munlock? I ended up disabling the check for it in the pro file.
-
Paul, did you have problems with the lack of mlock and munlock? I ended up disabling the check for it in the pro file.
I did something similar :) Except I assumed mmap was in use, so I didn't change the pro, I just added a #ifndef __KLIBC__ around the calls to mlock/munlock.
Next is to rebuilt with GCC 11.3.0 well, just because.

Hi All
Guess my qt5 installation needs updating ... where do I find QT5WEBW? - and any other required files?

Agree - qt5-qtwebengine should drag in everything needed - perhaps libssp as well
-
Something else to consider is that as many as the dependency DLLs need to be marked high for stability. I listed them in the SimpleBrowser thread, guess we should have a script to do it.
-
Here's a script to, I hope, mark all the dependent DLL's to load high. May need to reboot after to replace the files that were unlocked.
As an aside, trying to post a file from Dooble to here results in a crash and site can't be reached error. Currently the browser stays open but Dmitiry committed today a preference for it to run in single process mode, which is set, so in the future it may take out the whole browser.
Edit: Needs to be run in @unixroot\usr\lib. I'll fix it and update this post.
Edit: fixed script, please test.

Hi Dave
Thanks for pointing out the existence of qt5-qtwebengine-5.15.2-1.oc00.pentium4
My follow up question is: Why does ANPM not list this package? - not found on a search either...
Regards
Pete
-
ANPM here shows that qt5-qtwebengine is installed. Perhaps ignore the version part so on a cmd line "yum install qt5-qtwebengine" without the quotes should work.
Originally I basically installed all the qt5 packages. Currently the betas of AOS 5.1 also install the requirements I believe, though I should double check.
Another consideration is that VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT should be as high as you can put it while still being stable.
-
For interest, a GCC 11 build. In limited testing here, it perhaps seemed a little more stable. https://smedley.id.au/tmp/dooble-2022.04.04-os2-20220424-gcc11.zip

Hi
I'm testing it on my ArcaOS 5.0.7 VM, it is stable, not fast, but stable.
Element Chat (Matrix) is running on Dooble too.

I'm able to run the test build on ArcaOS 5.0.7 that I already had Otter running. I did need to run Dave Yeo's mark_high.cmd to log into OS/2 World. Posting from dooble!
-
Wow... thanks Paul! The GCC 11 build works well here , like Martin says, not fast but plenty stable (compared to Firefox), plus more sites render properly. Every once in a while I run into a site (bbc.com is a good example) where it has to be reloaded to get everything to render. Also changed a couple default settings that didn't make sense (like WebGL), but great overall.
Regards,
-
One thing I've noticed is that I have to log in here every time I start Dooble, perhaps a cookie problem. As well, after updating Dooble today, I had to delete the cookies to log in. Possibly due to dmik fixing how environment variables are handled. A lot of stuff can be controlled with environment variables.
Spell check doesn't seem to currently work, perhaps a setting problem.
Uploading a file here resulted in a sigtrap and I could no longer load anything in Dooble until I rebooted. Looking at the trp file, it may be a bad file number problem.
Youtube seems really slow. I wonder if the QT5Webengine was compliled with -webengine-proprietary-codecs or not.
This page has some interesting information, https://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qtwebengine-features.html (https://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qtwebengine-features.html)

Seems a lot of sites get confused by the current user agent setting, now fixed.
Try this build. Note that for existing Dooble installations, it's necessary to reset the UserAgent string in Dooble Settings -> Web -> User Agent -> Reset.
You might want to reset everything. This build also defaults to single process mode, can be changed in settings.

Indeed: looking at rpm.netlabs.org/release/00/i386/i686 I see no package qt5-qtwebengine listed.
But looking at rpm.netlabs.org/release/00/i386/pentium4 I *do* see a package qt5-qtwebengine listed.
So my guess is, that in ANPM you have selected i686 instead of pentium4 as the platform. Try to update your current os2base package to version os2-base-0.0.1-3, (possibly restart ANPM after that) and then try again to install qt5-qtwebengine

The rpm for dooble is now on rpm. Netlabs. Org exp and will be moved to
production as we speak.
The rpm was created so all depencies are done correctly.

@Dave have you tried building otter from https://github.com/bitwiseworks/otter-browser-os2 ? Here it built fine, but crashed in libcx as soon as I try and run it.

Yes, I tried a month ago, same crash I assume.
@OS4USER, did you mark as much as possible to load high?

Yes, using your excellent script.
-
Might want to delete your profile, located under %HOME%\.dooble, and of course have VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT as high as stable.
-
Hi All
@Tom
Yes, I had i686 as my platform. well spotted.
Having switched to P4 and updated some packages I can now start Dooble.
Sadly that is the end of my success. Any attempt to visit any website - including os2world.com - results in Dooble closing with some beeps. Presumably logs are written somewhere? - I have not found any so far, nothing in popuplog.os2
The above applies to both the rpm version and zip versions from this discussion.
Possibly I need to update some other packages to P4 versions...
Regards
Pete
-
Hi Pete, the trps are now written to \var\log\app on your boot drive. They probably show a sigtrap.
First thing is to make sure you have enough memory. VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT needs to be high, maybe 3072 and you should run the script I posted to mark all DLL's to load high. For most stuff, shouldn't matter whether P4 or i686. The QT5 stuff, you could right click on them in ANPM, and choose "Get specific release", then choose the Pentium4 one of the same version you have installed. Don't forget to mark them high, rerunning the script is simplest. Reboot after doing all that.
-
Hi Dave
I do not have a \var\log\app directory or any trp files anywhere in my \var\log directory.
Using VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=2560 as 3072 makes my system fail to start apps.
I have already changed the qt5 packages to P4.
Used your script to mark dll files high and rebooted.
No change in Dooble behaviour, crashed as soon as a url was entered, no \var\log\app directory or any trp files anywhere in my \var\log directory as a result of crash.
I have exceptq 7.11.5-1 i686 installed, should I install the P4 version 7.11.3-1 to try to generate trp files?
Regards
Pete
-
Strange no trp files. Could try searching all your drives for *trp.
Shouldn't matter whether exceptq is i686 or Pentium4. Might want to make sure you have Pentium4 libcn and libcx. Wonder if there is something else that didn't update on your system as it was only available as Pentium4?
-
My build crashes now and again at a breakpoint
Same here. Every time I tried to visit some site, Int 3 happens.
OS4 kernel I assume? perhaps some interaction with the debug kernel that (I think) is the basis for hte OS4 kernel.
-

Profile deleted. VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT = 3072. Int3 is still there.

OS4 kernel I assume? perhaps some interaction with the debug kernel that (I think) is the basis for hte OS4 kernel.
The same on IBM kernel - double sound and nothing (since original kernel was retail)
--
In the comport terminal I can see int 3, ud2 - so coder decided to crash the code on purpose. Just crash, no warning - very specific approach.
-
I do not have a \var\log\app directory or any trp files anywhere in my \var\log directory.
Where does your LOG environment variable point to? 'set log' or 'echo %log%'
-
The beeps come from exceptq, so there should be a trap file somewhere (Dave has already told where to find it).
It has a name like (bunch of digits)_(more digits)_(more digits)-exceptq.txt Try searching for *exceptq.txt if you cannot find it at \var\log\app
Having switched to P4 and updated some packages I can now start Dooble.

Hi All
DOH!
Thank you Tom I was searching for *.trp files...
Having had a quick look through a trap and seen this
03A7EE60 : 5D293535 53534E20 7265565F 6E6F6973 : 55)] NSS_Version

03A7EEA0 : 7361656C 70752065 64617267 6F742065 : lease upgrade to
I then checked NSS and updated all NSS packages.
That worked - I am posting from the rpm Dooble and the only thing that I have spotted that does not work is the Delete key. I am finding that I need to backspace to delete mistakes as the Delete key is simply ignored.

Hi Dave, my testing result is :
-used my "BROWSERTEST" VirtualBox vm (OS2 WARP4.52) which is same one implemented for you Simple Browser revisited, means QT5 Pentium4 necessary packages installed
-VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=3072
-RAM given to the machine also 3072 MB
-execute mark_high.cmd in /usr/lib
-tried both dooble versions downloaded in their zip archive from the given url; first version and the gcc11 one, executed from their folder just unzipped under C:\, they give same results
-browser starts in its blank page, then I can opens some pagesite but some of them self-close or trap after about a minute (ie. Youtube, Linkedin)
-almost behaving like the Simple Browser revisited which opens any pages only in Incognito mode, also there Linkedin and Youtube pages seem to work initially, resist a minute +/- , and then trap. The common part is both browsers cause a system trap as want to exit (close) 90% of the times
-both browsers can stay open sametime on the pages they can handle.
So, by my poor knowledge side I can tell they share same unstable behaviour happening more on less on same site pages, like it was caused by same -one or more- dll involved.
Just a question: does mark_high.cmd need to be executed every starting session ? If so, is it good to put its shadow in the Startup folder or adding such command in autoexec.bat?
Thank you
-
I then checked NSS and updated all NSS packages.
That worked - I am posting from the rpm Dooble...
I do not update NSS* (3.23.0-4) and NSPR (4.12.0-4) to the latest available.
Ones I have updated them and my FF became to very unstable. Downgrade was a nightmare.

No, it only needs to be run again if you update any of the DLL's

First thing is to make sure you have enough memory. VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT needs to be high, maybe 3072 and you should run the script I posted to mark all DLL's to load high.
My systems become unstable, if I use VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT above 2560. I did run your script, and rebooted.
After reboot, Above512 shows (in KB) low private mmemory: 357120, low shared memory: 270592, upper private memory: 1835008, upper shared memory: 1814144. After starting Dooble, it shows low private mmemory: 305536, low shared memory: 208000, upper private memory: 1713728, upper shared memory: 684116.
From that, it appears that VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=2560 is sufficient (but other things could use more upper shared memory than what is left). There is no hope that this would even get off the ground, without at least 1.2 GB of upper shared memory available. Then, it seems to eat more upper shared memory, as it is used. Lower shared memory, and private memory, seems to be adequate.
Of course, this is a very rough estimate of these numbers, and different user setups can change the numbers.
I wonder if a TURBO is needed, to keep DLLs loaded in high memory, without unloading them. It would likely help startup speed too.
-
I have to ask if this is supposed to work with my Ryzen Gen 3 processor system before I mess with a now working system.
-
Hi Ivan, why wouldn't it work with an i386 with SSE2 compatible processor? Pentium 4 is a crappy architecture for most of us but shouldn't be worse for your AMD then my I5.
I have asked Bitwise to tune for generic which will help all of us.
Hi Doug, yes, it seems 2560 is good enough and if that's the highest that is stable, well stick with it.
As for a turbo program, it was mostly needed to work around a kernel bug that didn't properly release high memory, now fixed in ArcaOS, still be handy for older kernels and as you mention, probably speed up loading. Help with memory fragmentation too, which will bite us after starting and stopping programs enough times.
Remy developed a general purpose turbo program which took a list of DLLs, might be worth checking out.
-
I have to ask if this is supposed to work with my Ryzen Gen 3 processor system before I mess with a now working system.
I don't have one, so I can't say, for sure, but it is running better than I expected, on every machine that I have installed to See other posts about some operational problems (nothing really serious):
Asus A88XM-A, with A6 processor.
Asus M3A78-EM with quad core Phenom processor.
Lenovo ThinkPad L530 (Intel I5).
Lenovo ThinkPad T510 (Intel I5).
Dell Optiplex GX270, with a single processor. I have 3 GB of memory, and 1 GB is allocated to a RAMDISK. (I am posting from this one). It seems to get very slow, when some other program is running, but by itself, there isn't much difference in performance.
If you have a reasonable configuration, properly installed, with the Pentium4 platform configured for RPM/YUM, it should work. Note, that you can run Dooble alongside of Firefox, even at the same time. There is very little, if any interferrence. I expect that T'Bird, and Seamonkey, would be much the same. Be aware, that running then together can easily fragment upper shared memory space.
Of course, it is always a good idea to have a good backup.
-
Hi.All.
It can be used immediately after installation, but once it is closed, it will not be able to connect to the Internet.

Hi All
I am currently trying Pauls gcc11 build which works reasonably well but suffers from the following problems. I suspect they are common to all current Dooble for OS/2 builds...
1] A tendency to simply close after a little use - seems very like the NSS problem suffered by Seamonkey/Firefox. Maybe this can be sorted in the same manner as Dave has with his recent Seamonkey/Firefox releases that sufffer less from this problem.
2] Unable to display a page loaded from History or Favourites lists - browser goes through the loading motions and seems convinced that the page is loaded but nothing is displayed. Copying the url from the "loaded" page to a new tab results in the new tab displaying that page content.
3] There does not seem to be any way of importing Bookmarks and Passwords.
4] Some keys seem to be ignored - definitely the Delete key and I am sure there was at least 1 other key but did not make a note at the time and have forgotten which key...
Aha! I see Doug has spotted the problem as wel,l it is the Insert key. He also notes that there is a problem with the Caps Lock key.
There are probably a few more problems to find...
Oh, Yes. A port of NoScript would be good - I suddenly find I am seeing adverts I did not know existed on lots of websites.
On the plus side: More websites work without problems compared to Seamonkey.
Thanks to all involved in the various ports of Dooble.

I have QT5 installed in arcanoa package manager and it is update. None of the stuff needed for Dooble that I need is listed on Netlabs like Dave listed here earlier.
Can you give an example of a file that Dooble needs but is not listed at Netlabs? Remember that Dave's script contains names of dll-files, and that the corresponding package at Netlabs probably has a different name. Example from another thread: icuuc.dll needed to be updated, and that is contained in package libicu.
-
Hi Klipp,
Try 'yum install qt5-qtwebchannel' first, then try 'yum install dooble' - see if that gets you any closer.

But now running yum install dooble.exe it says it can't find QT5WEBH.
Oh, and 'yum install dooble.exe ' won't work, since there is no RPM-package 'dooble.exe'

Hi Dave, both yum install qt5-qtwebchannel and yum install dooble give the same result "No package qt5-qtwebchannel available" and "No package dooble available."
I've got tellie's dooable 1-53 installed but is older and has problems.
I thought all the stuff necessary was in Paul's .zip file. Thats where I got dooable.exe, it wanted qt5-qtwebengine and I got that drom ECSOFT site. then when I re ran dooble.exe it wants QT5WEBH. I assume thats a "lib" file but I cant find it anywhere.
Something seems screwed up with YUM rel&exp they have none of the stuff thats referenced on the web.
Hope this helps and THANKS for your help.
klipp.
-
Hi Tom, and thanks for the help. The only thing /file? QT5WEBH and I get this from Paul's ZIP file
when running dooble after installing QT5-qtwebengine, it then wants QT5WEBH. Netlabs has nothing to offer!

Hi Klip, try running "yum clean all" then "yum install dooble" without the quotes.
-
Hi klipp
I wonder if you are hitting the same problem I found: ANPM here was set as Platform i686 so the qtweb packages were not found. If so add P4 to the Platform - I moved it to the top. I then restarted ANPM and the "missing" qtweb packages appeared.

That's weird, wonder what is getting corrupted in the profile. What about if after deleting .dooble, you start the browser and exit without visiting any sites? The retry?

I disagree: at this very moment I am visiting your homepage at the URL mentioned, using Dooble for OS/2.
BTW: what are 'fird parties' ? ;)

Likewise it opened here, though it took two attempts. Seems often Dooble doesn't load pages on the first try here, this time I pressed the home button (about:blank) and repasted the URL and it loaded fine.

Good Morning Remy!
Dooble is unable to open my webpage without crashing....
https://remydodin.levillage.org
Just installed Dooble from ANPM this morning, on one of my AMD hexcore test systems and your site came up quickly, the first time and with no problems or crashes. On ArcaOS v5.0.7, latest Python 3 and QT5 files
I must say, guys, that after accessing a number of hard to reach sites for me here over the last hour that even this test build has been amazingly stable, testing wise, so far - don't know if thats good luck or good management.
Haven't tried anything with sound or video yet, but this has been a pleasure to use so far - very snappy response, after a short loading time for each website - still haven't examined any of the settings and preferences as of yet.
Will report back after I try this on a couple of other systems
My compliments to the people or team porting this and will be following this browser development with interest.
Best!
Mark

FWIW! I'm running dccble in a virtual machine on Linux. Its been ungodly slow and really crappy finding web sites that will load, this is probably due to the fact its running in a virtual machine.
I've never been able to load and use Os2World! Until NOW,now! I'm in Os2World and writing this. I accomplished this by bringing us dooable and then loading Google and then was able to load different sites and now have Os2Working. Hopefully this might other people have a better experience with dooable.

It can be a little quirky in loading some previously visited sites, but a couple attempts usually loads a site. I'm using VMware and performance is fine (4c, 4GB RAM), even with sites having a lot of media (e.g., Dailymail.co.uk). The browser has been very stable.
I'm very impressed with the preview, especially when considering the few resources that have been supporting the development effort.
-
Heh All!
After about three hours of testing today on the current preview version of Dooble, I thought I'd report my findings for the developers.
Again, I'd like to commend them on this current port as it is definitely faster, and works better on most sites tested than our current browsers, and has been pretty stable on most sites (had the browser exit on www.politico.com, related to the settings, otherwise fine.
However, I have a number of observations to share. And these are strictly on the basis of being a beta tester, which essentially what we are doing here at the moment.
1) The documentation, based on being a new user is very sketchy - while it describes the various functions present in the browser, it does not indicate the procedures as to how to use them.
2) Perhaps this is too early in the preview, but it seems there are limited control functions present to undertake the various activities in the menus - an example is adding links to the "Favourites" list so data is retained - I was finding it hard to determine how to do this. A lot of useful functions seem to be described, but it is not intuitive as to how to use them.
3) I could not find any settings or prefeerences in the menus I had access to, to retain the browser in the state it was prior to terminating the session. A lot of times I want to access the same websites and retain the same settings from the previous session when starting again - currently I have not found a way to do this
4) The Accepted / Blocked domains function seems like it could be enormously useful item, similat to Adblock, but it is very non-intuitive as to how it could be managed (as per 2) above). At one point OS2World cookies suddenly were added to Third Party Session Rejections, such that I could not access OS2World (blank browser tab) and there seemed no intuitive way to remove them from this section - I essentially did a reset of Dooble to start over
I'm sure I will find other comments to add as I undertake further beta tests - but just some constructive comments for the developers for the moment, to start.
Best of the weekend to all!
Mark

Hi Mark, to add favourites, click the star beside the URL entry thing.
There is no setting for restoring the previous session, there is the history.
The cookie support seems not too bad, but I notice things like having to log into os2world every time I start the browser.
Unluckily it is still a very basic browser, with I understand basically one guy developing it and there's a lot of stuff I miss compared to SeaMonkey with NoScript. It does help to have a hosts file that blocks a lot of crap.

Hi.ALL.
The problem of not being able to connect to the internet is resolved once you delete the .dooble folder, but once you exit, the same thing happens all over again.
That's weird, wonder what is getting corrupted in the profile. What about if after deleting .dooble, you start the browser and exit without visiting any sites? The retry?
Hi.Dave.
If you exit without connecting to the site, you can connect after restarting.
However, you will have to delete the .dooble folder afterwards.
I have encountered the same problem in 3 different virtual environments and am surprised that there are no other reports.
I guess the settings of the code page for DBCS are different.

OK, that was going to be my next question. So you're running a DBCS system? I guess an issue will have to be raised.
What version of OS/2 are you running? And which codepage?

Seems to work here, though it seems I lost earlier favourites.
I'd assume like Mozilla, the profile is fragile. You might want to reset it and retry.

Dooble is unable to open my webpage without crashing....

I disagree: at this very moment I am visiting your homepage at the URL mentioned, using Dooble for OS/2.
BTW: what are 'fird parties' ? ;)
Youtube and Arca Noae.
(Before I reinstall Dooble, I cold open my page but since re-install, no more able to open it without a final crash

Hi All
The real downside to Dooble here is that it closes after 10 to 15 minutes use - no beeps, squeaks or log files. Dooble can be restarted immediately for another 10 to 15 minutes use.
I was presuming it is NSS/NSPR related - the same problem Mozilla has with the latest NSS/NSPR - but if others are not having this problem maybe it is not.
What versions of NSS/NSPR are other people using? - I currently have NSPR 4.23.0-1 and NSS 3.47.0-2 installed.
If not a NSS/NSPR problem what else should I look at?
Regards
Pete

Hi Pete,
You might want to try running Dooble from a command prompt window like this:
sh -c dooble.exe
When dooble exits, see if there are any messages in the comand prompt window - might give a clue about what is going on. I can get Dooble to exit reliably like you describe if I try to open a private window while running in single process mode (apparently not supported so causes Dooble to close).

Writing this on Dooble and tried it again. I get it now - these bleary old eyes of mine were focused on the LARGE star on the right side of the page (by the menu icon), instead of the tiny little one immediately to the left of the URL Got my first favourite - namely this site!
One thing I just noted, writing this, is I was trying to eliminate an empty line and nothing happened - I can highlight and delete or cut something out but can't eliminate the empty space with the delete key.
Woooops .............. I see you can eliminate a line by pressing the backspace key ........... but thats not particularly intuitive.
I think I'm also getting extra key presses or key presses that didn't occur as I note a number of characters that I don't think I typed and some misspelled words - but perhaps its just too early in the morning ..............
As to Noscript and also Adblock, we are inseparable companions on Seamonkey - I love all that peaceful, empty space everywhere, so I can focus strictly on what I want to see or read.

Yes, there is something wrong with the keyboard support, almost like the wrong term is used.

Hi Pete, Dooble requires the latest NSPR4 and NSS packages. It could be related as the Mozilla apps sure didn't like the updated ones. Dooble stays up for hours of light use here, I still mostly use SeaMonkey.
As David suggested, try catching stdout/stderr, I use (without the quotes) "dooble.exe 2>&1 | tee dooble.log" to redirect to dooble.log and the console.
Another possibility for everyone is problems created by too high of a VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT, I just lowered mine as a test. Values need to be X00 in hex or these, 2048, 2304, 2560, 2816, 3072. There's likely others too.

Hi,
l thank those working on Dooble, for me this is a great step forward!!
I have a x61 here with only ArcaOs installed (5.0.1), 3GB. On this machine Dooble runs well, not fast but very stable, until now. I could open any page I tried
@Remy : I can open your hompage right away and everything works, I can even look at the video concerning Warpstock and AvxCat.
The only Issue until now is setting a homepage to be opened when startting the browser.
I set this page as Homepage : https://lite.qwant.com/
The browser starts and seems to load the page but the page stays empty. Typing the address manually the browser loads the page with no obvious problem. No big issue anyway.
I have a second machine here, a X200, same installation. It has 8 GB installed, 3 GB recognized by ArcaOS. On this machine the browser starts but actually immedeately crashes when opening the most pages. I can load Os2world but as soon as I try to f.e. open a thread in the forum the browser crashes. Still working on this, I do believe it is rather a problem concerning QT5 on this machine, have to keep trying.

Another weirdness with dooble. With Firefox or SeaMonkey, if the browser is already running and you open another instance with lets say "firefox.exe https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php?topic=3048.new#new" the currently running Firefox gets the URL and opens a new window or tab with the passed URL depending on settings. This can be bypassed with the -no-remote parameter.
With dooble, a whole new instance of dooble is started, using the same profile as well (doesn't seem to be a way to have multiple profiles) which might cause problems like when both instance write to the same file.
Anyways seems less then optimal and somewhat dangerous having this behaviour and makes it harder to open an URL from another program.

I believe he meant AVX.
-
In my attempts to build Qt5, I see it uses -mno-avx or such. Lots of subprojects, especially in qtwebengine and possibly one of those does enable AVX, especially as some use different build systems such as chromium using Ninja.
Need to see what code is using AVX and probably an issue raised at Bitwise's Github.

Hi All
I replaced libcx and libgcc packages (pulls in gcc-stdc++-shared-library, libgcc-fwd, libssp, libssp-fwd, libstc++) with P4 versions - they were i686 - and have had Dooble running for longer than 15 minutes at a time.
@mauro: You may want to check if the above helps.
Looking at the last log generated I see quite a few lines like this:-
js: A cookie associated with a cross-site resource at http://youtube.com/ was set without the `SameSite` attribute. A future release of Chrome will only deliver cookies with cross-site requests if they are set with `SameSite=None` and `Secure`. You can review cookies in developer tools under Application>Storage>Cookies and see more details at https://www.chromestatus.com/feature/5088147346030592 and https://www.chromestatus.com/feature/5633521622188032.
js: 'window.webkitStorageInfo' is deprecated. Please use 'navigator.webkitTemporaryStorage' or 'navigator.webkitPersistentStorage' instead.
js: Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'postMessage' of undefined
Could the last line be responsible for Dooble closing?

What version nos of libcx and libgcc were you running that exited?
Had dooble up and running as a test for over two hours now on both my AMD hexcore and AMD quadcore, ArcaOS 5.0.7.
libcx here is 0.7.2-1 and libgcc is 9.2.0-5 - cx is pentium4 while gcc is i686 on both.
Those are the current -rel versions, I believe.
Best!

Some time ago, I spent some time, and updated all of the packages, that have Pentium4 versions. I was able to install Dooble, using ANPM from netlabs-rel, with no problems. It stays up for hours (at least 10 hours), and never crashes, unless I try to turn off the single processor setting.
There is definitely a large learning curve, and there are some serious problems:
Delete key
Insert key
Caps lock key
Can't open a local file
Can't drop a URL on it
Default fonts may not work, depending on which fonts it defaults to
I have tried DROID fonts and a couple of others (if you see "Nimbus", you need to change all of the defaults). None of them seem to do everything, although that may be caused by various web sites trying to use specific fonts.
Some discussion about properly using authentication, and private windows, would probably be a welcome addition. The supplied documentation seems to assume that the user understands what they do, and how to use them.
-
Hi Doug,
Private windows only work in the multi-processor state. The single-processor setting is a hack for debugging and not really supported.
Authentication seems to be there so you can password protect your profile or at least part of it. If you enable it, you always need it to access things like history and favourites. This is partially broken at least on my and Paul's builds (haven't tested the official one) as we're lacking an API to lock memory.
Try opening this file, ile:///@unixroot/usr/share/doc/dooble-2022.04.04/README-os2.txt (http://file:///@unixroot/usr/share/doc/dooble-2022.04.04/README-os2.txt) or file:///usr/share/doc/dooble-2022.04.04/README-os2.txt (http://file:///usr/share/doc/dooble-2022.04.04/README-os2.txt).
Seems drive letters are currently broken. Not sure why @unixroot works as I tried some other environment variables like set D=d: and then @d. They failed.
Fonts are fine here, I have a lot installed.
The keys seem to be a term problem or similar. Should be easily fixable along with the drive letter thing, which does work under Windows I hear.
Edit: fix a typo

Hey guys,
I'm many have read posts of a build of dooble existing and is waiting on an rpm.
I couldn't understand why a zip wasn't being provided, so I spent a little bit of time this morning building it myself, the result is https://smedley.id.au/tmp/dooble-2022.04.04-os2-20220424.zip
...
Enjoy!
Cheers,
Paul
Thanks Paul for your work.
I just learned today about the availability of Dooble from the recent OS2 Voice newsletter. Thus, I haven't done anything yet.
I have read the posts in this thread about RPM installation as well as the Zip file you kindly provided. My question is: Does the zip file allow selection of the volume for installation? (My assumption is that RPM probably installs it to the Boot Volume.)
I ask since I have from the days of Warp 3 - and perhaps even PC DOS - had separate partitions for applications. Thus my ArcaOS boot volume on this machine is relatively-small, being only about 6.5 Gb with 3.8 Gb free. I know I could forge ahead and experiment - after first imaging ArcaOS with DFSee - but I thought advance information would save time and headaches.
TIA.

That doesn't seem to be entirely true. Favorites, at least, work better without authentication. If I do add authentication, all of it disappears, and I need to start over (always using authentication, or it doesn't show anything). I haven't tried a second authentication.
Try opening this file
I tried to copy that whole line, so I could quote it. It allowed me to copy a link (only one, not both), but not the whole line. Both links fail. That may have something to do with having \HOME on a different drive than \usr. I have wondered if kLIBC Path Remapper might do something useful, but I haven't tried that, yet.
Fonts are fine here, I have a lot installed.
Would you tell us which ones you are using with Dooble?
The keys seem to be a term problem or similar.
I don't think it is that simple. Delete works on my Lenovo ThinkPad L530. It doesn't work on any other machine, that I have tried. There is something different about the L530. DEL in Air Boot is supposed to power off the machine. It doesn't do that.
Oh yeah, add that the spell checker doesn't seem to work.

Yes that was what I meant but put poorly, as well as I only tested briefly.

Try right clicking and doing copy link location, there was a typo that after I fixed it, the text didn't change though the link did.
Anyways the important thing is which drive dooble resides on, usually %UNIXROOT%, never did try with where my HOME is.

Don't know, I see old *nix programs like Midnight Commander where you can train its keys. There seems some variability in key support.
Oh yeah, add that the spell checker doesn't seem to work.
Same here, even after choosing a language in settings.
It is a preview and considering there's been no porting yet, works surprisingly well.
Likely a lot of this stuff is in QT5's web engine and some in Dooble. Haven't been able to build QT5 yet, should look at dooble again.
-
One idea is too compare to the SimpleBrowser.
The SimpleBrowser did remember my login here, unlike Dooble. So it is Dooble with the cookie problem.
Opening a file acts the same, so a QT5Webengine problem.
Same with the delete key not working and caps lock going to the start of the line.

Hi Pete, yes I have already installed libcx and libgcc pentium4 at the latest version available, which was due to make at least Dooble running, lead there by error messages appearing before those installation. Also installed NSS and NSPR pentium4 at their latest version.
However, I understand that Dooble good running depends from many system elements, (dll packages above all), actually different on each machine.
Hope that at final phase of all testings, a guide will explain the complete set of software/configuration needed to make it work well. At that time I will use a new clean VM for starting over with it, meantime I keep trying to set my actual implementation best possible by following the dedicated threads here and asking sometimes.
Thank you much for now, I'm appreciating the effort for getting there.
-

Here it was that easy as I could imagine it could be. yum install dooble -> installed only this one package. After that it worked. Other programs still work too. No problem with AOO, Seamonkey, Thunderbird, ... all works well. Probably cause I kept my system up to date before. And I had installed simple browser before.

this is +/- the situation I'm having my Dooble installation test, on such vm had already simplebrowser working (for what "working" could mean, dealing with crashes sometimes and trapping on program exit). I've provided all updates/installation I understood should be done, always choosing pentium4 platform, the matter is that the system had initially most i686 packages and maybe now some i686 still there is producing such weirdness acting. Furtermore, also ANPM software recently behaves unreliably, sometimes installation/upgrades go faulty with packages conflict advices a bit complicated to solve, while have had no problem to use ANPM for other software implementation before. This is why my idea is that both Simplebrowser and Dooble deserve a very focused HowTo once the origin of their actual weakness -I see not being the only one having troubles- will be determined
-

Guess this has to be done by people how actually have problems and a solution. Maybe a wiki page? People like me can't contribute much as it simply worked.

Well, most of it works very well. Small annoyances can be easily worked around, pending a proper fix (and those will not need to be documented, once they are fixed). The biggest challenge is to learn how to use Dooble. It is somewhat different than old browsers that we have had. I did install a windows version, and it seems to be much the same (without the bugs).
I have installed to a number of machines now. Some were not completely updated to Pentium4 before installing (they were kept up to date, using ANPM, but not changed to Pentium4), and Dooble works fine. The best install experience was after I installed the DejaVu fonts (from HOBBES). Dooble picked them up automatically.
For those of you who don't want to use ANPM (RPM/YUM), give your head a shake, and learn to use it. If you keep things up to date, you usually don't have problems (it is far from perfect, but YUM is a very complex program, and ANPM makes it a lot easier). Trying to do all of that manually will be a lifetime project, and you will probably miss things (it is a lot more than just DLLs).

I agree that "most of it works very well". While using ANPM to install it gave the usual warning of dependencies installation, there didn't appear to be any installed. However, since I used it to Update All last night, perhaps this was the reason.
The only trouble I had was when I tried to download an ODT documentation file from GitHub. (Like you, I wanted to find out how to use it, since the settings (or Preferences) menu is a bit opaque.) First the page didn't display all the apparent text; however since I forgot the recommendation about Fonts, this could have been the problem. Then clicking on the ODT file didn't result in a download; right clicking on it so as to save the link didn't work either since Dooble then froze and required me to kill the process; though the Save window remained open after the killing, clicking on OK didn't save it, as apparently the killing of Dooble prevented it. I finally booted the Linux volume to access <https://github.com/textbrowser/dooble/tree/master/Documentation> to download it.
Still, it, even in the Preview stage, is a clear improvement over FF 45.

Edit, when you click the ODT file, Github does have a link for Download which works as well.

How to do to have it running without crash ?
Very awfull compared to firefox which works far more better than this one but too limited due to new codes uses by many web sites
(I do not use virtual machine)
When will the official working browser be available ?
I'm tied to switch between ArcaOS and windows many times per day.
As well Thunderbird is out of use at end of this month for gmail account due to missing secured authorization process (except using application password but not sure it will accept it) , any new one ?
Why was this dooble browser put into normal repository ?
(it should be left into the experimental repository until it is fully tested and not crashing)

Hey Remy,
Why was this dooble browser put into normal repository ?
(it should be left into the experimental repository until it is fully tested and not crashing)
The *only* possible reason (IMHO) is to increase the availability and make it easier to install.
Cheers,
Paul

Some are testing it under unsupported OS release (ex: ArcaOs 5.0.1)
I'm using latest ArcaOs release
Where is the trap file located ?
nothing into popuplog.os2
I did a try using line cmd foud into this thrtead.
Here is what I have
sh -c dooble.exe
js: Uncaught ReferenceError: rssReader is not defined
or other...
Well as soon an uncaught reference is found, it crashes...
This should never happen, browser should ignore and not crash.
I did a test using same link with minimum information into it, new page isn't loaded and it always reloads from local browser cache ?
It should reload new page not reload older page !
-
I could clean cache and try again after removing source providing previous message.
It open and immediatly near end of load page crash ....
sh -c dooble.exe
no error message but Dooble crashes
Where is the trap file ?
None found ! Thanks

Hi Silvan
When Dooble simply closes - as experienced by mauro, Remy and myself - no trp files are generated.
If Dooble is started from the command line using
dooble.exe 2>&1 | tee dooble.log
A log does get generated but no trap file.
I have several dooble log files that show js errors as the last line eg:-
js: A cookie associated with a cross-site resource at http://youtube.com/ was set without the `SameSite` attribute. A future release of Chrome will only deliver cookies with cross-site requests if they are set with `SameSite=None` and `Secure`. Possibly of interest: When a trap file is generated it has this filename format 62667a10-0055_1e-DOOBLE-exceptq.txt so people should not search for *.trp files in relation to dooble but should search for *DOOBLE-exceptq.txt

trp files are now on your boot drive in \var\log\apps.
As for your problems, besides logging the output, I guess other possibilities are a package that needs updating or possibly changed from i686 to Pentium 4, or running out of memory. Have you marked as much as possible to load high? I posted a script earlier in this thread. Is VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT high enough? could be another problem.
Guess there could be a font or codepage problem too though doubtful.

All package where installed during 5.0.7 upgrade and currently at normal repository latest level

Yes VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT is high enough ( 2816 )
I run your script but why have you included :
├ Cannot find such files: swresa1.dll
├ Cannot find such files: swscal3.dll
├ Cannot find such files: libvpx4.dll

├ Cannot find such files: swresa1.dll

I had these two, on one system. Apparently the package doesn't call for the ffmpeg-legacy-56 package, and it needs it.
├ Cannot find such files: libvpx4.dll
├ Cannot find such files: libvpx2.dll
These two probably need one, or more, of the libvpx-legacy packages.

I tried to use PayPal, and dooble crashes when it accepts a cookie. I authenticated, and it takes a cookie, but it crashes as soon as I try to make an invoice.
Firefox 45 used to work a few weeks ago, but it stopped working. It's encouraging to have the new webengine, but it's not what I would recommend as a good browsing experience.
My bank simply won't take dooble for login, but says, not very helpfully, that an error occurred.
I'm looking forward to improvements. (Edit: when I reopen the browser and try again, PayPal is working fairly well.)
-

One of my banks does that (wouldn't want to help the bad guys get logged in, would you?). My other bank quit working with Firefox 45, and seems to be good, with Dooble.
Fixing banks is probably as easy as fixing government logins. They support a few of the more famous spyware browsers, but not something that they don't bother to to look for.
t's not what I would recommend as a good browsing experience.
I think the jury is still out, on that one. Part of the problem, for me, is that I cannot import bookmarks, and the Favorites things is somewhat foreign to my way of working. It is mostly a learning curve, but some pretty serious failures have been identified, and they need to be fixed.

Does Dooble accept:
Access-Control-Allow-Origin
Access-Control-Allow-Methods
Access-Control-Max-Age
Access-Control-Allow-Headers

To Neil and Dave,
I tried it again just now and I agree it works. But, during the interim, I followed Neil's suggestion and installed the DejaVu fonts. Perhaps this was the difference; it certainly allowed displaying the text this time.
I however also during the interim checked Credentials under Privacy and perhaps this also was required; what it does exactly is not that clear so I ignored it previously. (Though I entered a Password under Credentials, the field is now blank; perhaps it is stored in one of the *.db files. I'll worry about that later.)
As far as Downloads location, if one clicks on the Download error it provides an option of the partition and directory to which one wants downloads placed. The <dooble.odt> file downloaded to my directory of choice.
Finally, on the issue in some of the other posts, I tried making a payment on one of my Capital One cards. Accessing my account and making the payment worked fine. I couldn't access my account w/ my bank but that well could have been due to the Password in my password vault (Account Manager) being an old one. (Darn banks that require periodic changing of passwords.) I'll access the stored information on my Win 7 platform and probably try that tommorrow.

Since I was logged in here I thought I would experiment w/ another site. PayPal opened fine and only asked me for the Captcha authentication. Though I was able to access my account w/out any problem, I had no transactions in which to engage so can't reproduce Neil's crash problem. It did have the cookie acceptance banner on the bottom of the page for a mobile number verification, and I did accept it but experienced no crash.

We should also possibly investigate a couple of other issues as a result of problems I encountered, viz:
1. Though not "earth shaking" the URL field seems a bit "cranky". When I type in just <os2world.com>, it generates a can't connect command; when I added "s" to "http" and "www" before <os2world.com> then it opened. FF 45.9.0 doesn't require this.
2. Including an attachment to a reply in this forum, at least in my case, seemed a real chore. The process on clicking on different partitions, and then directories in a given partition, first was very slow and then on at least one occasion froze the entire OS; even the mouse cursor was frozen. (I experienced this when composing a new topic on an AOO problem, and was foreced to use FF and it processed the message and attachments OK.) A hard boot was required.
3. The Search Engines feature wholly escapes me. The URL field, except for the above problem, works OK, but it apparently doesn't double as a search engine. Does anybody know if now, or in the future, it will be available?

OK, the above complaint can be ignored it seems. I tested a couple other sites w/ Dooble, including my own, that are HTTPS sites and they opened only w/ the top level domain entered. It seems just that the host for <os2world.com> hasn't provided for redirection from HTTP to HTTPS.
-
Hi Wayne.
#1, Dooble just doesn't have as good auto-complete as the Mozilla apps. In Firefox etc, enter os2world and it will try os2world.com, www.os2world.com with http and https. Not sure if a lack in Dooble or the QT5 webengine
#2, Currently the QT5 Webengine is broken when it comes to drive letters, likely needs the Windows code ported. Without a drive letter you can select a file on the drive that Dooble is installed on.
Further more, in my testing, uploading seems to be broken. Probably a QT5 Webengine problem.
#3, You have to enable search engines by going to Tools-->Search Engines... check the search engines you want to use and click the Add Checked button so they show up in the lower pane of the Dooble:Search Engines window.
Unluckily searching from the URL bar is not implemented. What you can do is highlight some text, right click, and at the bottom of the context menu, choose Search Selected Text and then your search engine.
Otherwise create a favourite with your search engine and use that.
Dooble itself is much simpler then Firefox etc, and this is a preview version and actually works amazing well with little porting. Unluckily due to war, and funding, work on fixing these issues might not happen very quick and it is unlikely to ever have the features that Firefox has.
-
Seems that Dooble can import a list of blocked domains, see the video at this issue, https://github.com/textbrowser/dooble/issues/68 (https://github.com/textbrowser/dooble/issues/68)
Edit: successfully attached a file with Dooble
-
Hi Dave,
Are you saying that Dooble doesn't have/use a version od NoScript? If that is true it makes it just about useless.
-
Hi ivan
No, there is not a version of NoScript- but Daves "block list" posted above and only recently imported into Dooble here certainly helps block adverts on the few sites I have tried so far some of which are almost hidden by adverts otherwise.
Now, if I can get Dooble to run for longer than around 30 minutes - logs show js errors as last entries, maybe using the "block list" will reduce those errors. Will have to test...
Regards
Pete

Hi Pete,
The big problem is that a blocklist file is static whereas NoScript is dynamic - block or unblock on the fly, sometimes needed to be able to see what is on the site I get to because some of those sites are dynamic as well trying to get some of the junk past static filters.

The biggest problem with NoScript, is that it needs to be maintained.
Check out: https://alternate-dns.com/ (https://alternate-dns.com/). I put those DNS servers into my router, and about 80% of ads never appear. When I add a hosts file, from https://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm (https://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm) (this hasn't been updated for quite a while, although the web site has been revamped), it gets rid of another 10%, and I don't need to do anything. The remaining ads are usually not the type that jump out and grab you by the throat. Since the DNS reference is in my router, all of my devices are protected, and I don't need to be bothered with it.

To have a router that allowed changing the DNS server, Can't change mine as it pulls in the internet over LTE.
I use https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/hosts (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/hosts) updated yesterday and now 3.5 MB's in size. Wget pulls that fine. Even use it on my phone.

With Dooble, you can also enable/disable Javascript globally in the settings on the 'Web' page, then enable/disable it page-by-page by right-clicking the page's tab at the top and checking/unchecking 'Javascript'...

It does help if one actually reads, doesn't it? I noticed the "Add Checked" button but for some reason i didn't click in my mind. I unchecked all except DuckDuckGo and Google, then clicked the button, and it of course added them in the lower pane.
It's amazing what one can do if they actually read things ...

I Dooble compatible with ffturbo ? Open office quick start ?
always searching a way to be able to start Dooble without crahs and no one told me how to do to get the trap file when none is produced ?
No trap file available, no debug from what I understand... But no trap file generated no help to get one !
Where is otter browser ?

Hi Remy,
I use both ffturbo and OO quickstart, and Dooble runs well here so I guess you can say it is compatible. Trap files usually end up in C:\var\log\apps on my system - look there for any you might have. Having the '*-debuginfo' rpm files installed for QT5 parts will also help get useful trap files.
Are you running with '--single-process' enabled in Dooble settings? It seems to be much more stable (and faster) that way.

Hi David,
The path is not C:\var\log\app
Installed all QT5 debuginfo rpm package
Installed QT5 multimedia as well sockets
Tried dooble but it failed just before end of page is loaded, no trap files no *dooble*.txt not *.trp)
Tried dooble --single-process but it failed and no trap files
Tried sh -c dooble.exe and it failed without any message
What next to get debugging elements ?
-
Hi Remy,
It is very strange! I watched your video so I see what you mean. The only thing I have seen here anything like that is when I tried to open a private window ('Settings'->'New Private Window') - Dooble immediately closed with no trap file. Are you trying to run in 'Private' mode? Maybe this is a bug (although I reported this and was told it is not supported in '--single-process' mode and Dooble closed on purpose).
At this point we can only experiment - one thing I would try is removing or renaming the C:\Home\.dooble directory. There may be something corrupted in one of the settings files that would be fixed with a new one (created on first start). Of course any settings you may have made will be re-set, so be aware of that.
Also, strange there is no trap file (unless not really a trap) - are you certain 'exceptq' is properly installed? Try re-installing just in case. Also, look for old versions of exceptq.dll and distorm.dll (the 2 DLL's installed by the exceptq rpm) elsewhere on your system that may interfere.
If you upload a copy of 'testlog -c generic' I could compare that to mine and see if there are any obvious differences in installed packages that might give a clue if nothing else works.
Overall, I am very happy with Dooble - yes it has issues, but compared to Firefox issues, they are minor (for me anyway - I can use my Bank again!). I am able to once again navigate the Internet without having to resort to Windows or Linux...
Regards,
-
Hi Remy, try adding set EXCEPTQ=Z in your environment, easiest is in a cmd window, then start Dooble in the same cmd window and see if it generates a trp when it exits. If not, try set EXCEPTQ=ZZ.
-
Has anybody figured out how to add a certificate to the trust store in Dooble? I'm trying to use AdGuard as a proxy in Dooble to help with the ads. I'm pretty sure I added the AdGuard certificate to OpenSSL's trust store correctly, but Dooble still complains about HTTPS connections, so obviously it is looking somewhere else for the trust store.
-
Hi Remy
I saw your video and was surprised to see Dooble crash almost immediately on opening a page. I never had Dooble crash that quick, I usually got at least 10 minutes use before it crashed. It does suggest a support package may not be at a required level. Checking my notes these are what I needed to update to extend Dooble uptime here
Replaced libcx and libgcc packages (pulls in gcc-stdc++-shared-library, libgcc-fwd, libssp, libssp-fwd, libstc++) with P4 versions- were i686
libicu is current release, libxslt is previous release - all P4 versions
The above resulted in Dooble running for around 30 to 40 minutes before crashing - without an exceptq log.
I updated pthread package to 0.2.6-1 P4 a couple of days ago and that seems to give me more Dooble "uptime" before Dooble simply disappears - watched a 45 minute video and browsed ebay for over 30 minutes without a crash, I actually closed the browser rather than it closing itself. Has not resolved the problem completely though as Dooble does still disappear without obvious cause.
When Dooble crashes there are no exceptq logs produced here - you can make Dooble produce a log by starting from the command line. Open a window in \usr\bin - or wherever dooble.exe is located - and enter
dooble.exe 2>&1 | tee dooble.log
which should produce a dooble.log in the dooble.exe directory. Not sure if it will be of any use as the logs produced here seem to be full of javascript errors...
Looking at your video I also see your installation does something my Dooble cannot do: Open a webpage in the only tab after starting. Attempting to load a webpage from Favourites, History or entering a url results in Dooble loading the page but failing to display it - the page is loaded but blank! Usually takes opening another tab or 2 before I can get any webpage to load *and display* - and, No, using Reload does not display the content of the blank page.
Hmm... browsing ebay... seems some ebay options are simply not visible with Dooble unless you know where to put your mouse pointer and click. I am looking at this page https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=proac&_sacat=0 and notice the box that should display the List or Gallery view option is blank - that is the empty box to the right of the box containing the text Best Match. This is probably the same problem with SVG as mentioned in this discussion https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php?topic=3058.msg34767
How do I get os2world forum to "remember me"? - I login with the Forever option but next time I visit I have to login...

You probably also need to use File-> Authentication, which makes the whole thing more difficult. I have just been entering the login information, for OS2world, and it works as well as anything else does.
It is a learning curve, and the rules are not quite the same as what we are used to.
@Dave (or anybody else): You seem to have this figured out. How do you get it to ask for authentication when you log into Dooble? How can you make more than one profile (if you want to)? Is there a way to automatically enter authentication?

Hi Remy,
It is very strange!

Hi David,
I sent you a PM with link to my testlog file
I first tried your suggestions but didn't work better nor trap files
I then tried Pete suggestions and again, it didn't work better' and no trap files

Hi Remy
Might be worth checking the following are installed, replace any i686 versions with P4 versions
libxslt - 1.132-1 P4
libxml2 - 2.9.10-3 P4
libssp - 9.2.0-5 P4
libstdc++ - 9.2.0-5 P4
libc - 0.1.10-1 P4
libgcc - 9.2.0-5 P4
libgcc-fwd - 9.2.0-5 P4
libicu - 68.1-1 P4
Other than that I am out of ideas...

I have some immediate and persistent closures with dooble, when I select File-Print preview. In the rest it is quite good with some sporadic closure.
Good luck and greetings

Silvan told us that it would be useless to change all package to pentium4. That won't be an update. I don't know if that affects the packages you've listed.

Hi,
I did it but got same problem.
One interesting thing is that I had backlevel on libicu due to problem using 68.1-1 i686 to allow Ooffice to work but using the latest with P4 allow Ooffice to work too while it crashes when in i686...

More news :
I progressed...
The problem seems to be into Dooble code or some part of its code due to timing issue or something else
I just did a test removing a small php code creating rssfeed display using ArcaNoae rssfeed link.
The page loaded without crahs !
I then loaded the rssfeed part code only
(rssfeeds entries displaied correctly)
Then, while the code is memory loaded, I tried to open the page which always crashes and this time, it opens without crash !
- interesting -
From these tests, I see that loading the original webpage with all code always crashes...
While opening a page without the rssfeed display code and then open the rssfeed display code only
and finally opening the original page will full code opens without a crash....
(The change is that all code is memory loaded - cache - in the second time and faster while when it crashes, the load of the rssfeed is longer and happens after the page is loaded....). Hope this could help resolving this issue which I hope could resolve other site having same kind of problems...
Regards
Rémy
note: The php code creates html entries from the input rssfeed
(I can forward the used code if need to identify whats going wrong into dooble)

Hi Doug,
Not using authentication. Testing it earlier showed the best thing was to authenticate right after opening the browser. All it does is encrypt part of your profile.
There are a bunch of command line options for the webengine, linked from the documentation, which IIRC includes an option for different profiles. Simpler might be to change %HOME%, either with a script or using the program properties, could have a couple of program objects.
Hi Remy, the print preview and printing are known issues.
The timing thing sounds like worth opening an issue for, especially if you can reduce it to a small testcase.
Most of my packages are still i686 and Dooble is stable here.
-
Hi Remy,
I looked at yout testlog file, but didn't see anything unusual there in comparison to mine. Maybe the php code you mention is the trigger of the issue? If you can describe how to use it, I'd be glad to try it out just to confirm it is if you want...

Hi All
Having just had to login again the earlier tip by Dave Yeo about setting cookie policy to Save All does not seem to cure this problem.
Any other ideas?
Regards

-
Hi Pete,
My understanding is thet Dooble does not support saving passwords, see:
https://github.com/textbrowser/dooble/issues/102
It could be added, just not by that guy. I personally kinda like that it doesn't because OS/2 does not have a logon to the desktop, so anyone can turn on your computer and use (and even see with SeaMonkey) your passwords. It is very convenient though, but I'm getting more and more security conscious in my old age (due to harsh experience)...
Regards,

It's weird, just had to log in for this page, double checked the settings , closed Dooble and restarted, loaded this page from history and I was logged in.
One of the ideas of Dooble is privacy, which does include blocking most cookies. Perhaps in this case their is a time out or it is simply a bug. Other sites do work to keep me logged in. Different cookie policies I guess.
Once Martin feels up to it, we might be able to get him to change the OS2World cookie defaults.
See the spell checker still doesn't work either.

Hi David,
Since I could bypass the crash (close) of Dooble, I tried to go backward, deleted .dooble path, uninstalled/install dooble (like I did previously) but this wasn't enough to go into this bug again ! (Hum, not Dooble and may QT5 issue !)
Next, I'm going to uninstall/install QT5 + dooble and check what happens then...
-
I uninstalled / installed QT5w* as well dooble with .dooble delete to have initial state ....
And since I could bypass the close/crash state (removing a remote rssfeed load from main home page and loading this feed as a single page), I'm no more able to reproduce it !
Surprizing. what could have changed since I did the "bypass" action ? Is anything stored and where ? :-\ ::)
-
Hi Remy,
Well, at least it works now! Not sure why, but if you uninstalled, then re-installed QT5, I can only guess that there may have been corruption in some configuration file somewhere from the first install. Enjoy!

Hi David,
I uninstalled, then re-installed QT5 to try to create again the problem again.
No need to uninstall / install QT5 to have it working, As I wrote, Since I could bypass the crash removing the php rssfeed part of the web page, and then only load this php code alone resolved the problem and since this time, I'm able to load the full page !!
This is why I'm searching what could be saved and where to no more go into the bug...
Having an unresolved issue is not good and may happen again or produce other type or issue in the futur...

Dooble_cookies.Db seems to be related to my problem.
After deleting this file, I was able to connect to the site without any problems.
So, when I Do Not Save the Cookie Policy in settings, it works fine.
thank you.

Hi,
I defined https://duckduckgo.com/ as my home page
After system reboot and starting Dooble, its look loading the page but nothing is displaied (blank page)
I load an other web page and then back to duckduckgo home page and this time, it display the page as it should !
Tried several times (closed/started dooble) and same issue each time !
What could be the culprit ?
Thx

I would track a shipping number and got a message about javascript and meta-refresh not supported etc....
After using home page and then trying again the link, it works....
It seems javascript or other supported code issues exist under Dooble
Link I tried (stop/start dooble and then try the link from link field)

I built dooble-2002.06.15 based on the bww git. My fork of the code is at https://github.com/psmedley/dooble-os2
PR raised at https://github.com/bitwiseworks/dooble-os2/pull/15

OK good - might just be something weird on my VM then.
URLs like https://www.google.com/ are working - but if I just type www.google.com it isn't. Fixed - I didn't have a default search engine selected.

Hi Paul,
I have installed your version of Dooble, for rendering page as www.google.com you have to open
a second tab end entering your url without the "https://" preceding it, if inserted in the first tab open, in many case the page is not rendered.
This mistake is present also in the first release of Dooble.

Hi Paul
https://smedley.id.au/tmp/dooble-2022.06.15-os2-20220618.zip
I tried it on my Thinkpad L420. It had installed the older Dooble with the required libraries. I just downloaded dooble on a different folder and run dooble.exe.
I just made simple tests with OS2World and gmail. If I type www.os2world.com, it will not load, I had to put the full https://www.os2world.com, the same with gmail. (Noticed this also happens on the Windows version)
Gmail and OS2World worked fine. I experienced a "dooble close" on my first test (Firefox was also running on the background) and no information was reflected the popuplog. On the second test (without Firefox on the background) I played a longer time with OS2World and gmail and open some other sites and it keeps working for the moment.
I don't know if it recommended to check some other logs. Or if somebody has some test websites that are recommend to stress out Dooble a little bit.
Attached a little picture of https://html5test.com/ (http://"https://html5test.com/")

Hi
A quick update. After some more testing, opening the fifth tab, I put https://www.google.com, and I had experienced a complete system freeze. The CPU indicators on the bottom froze and the CAD is not working. It required a full shutdown pressing and holding the power button.

The dooble source code was updated over the weekend, so I rebuilt the OS/2 binaries today. This has NO OS/2 specific fixes included.

From the dooble changelog:
Welcome to the 2022.10.15 release of Dooble. Corrections and new features are detailed below.
24-hour floating digital clock, as requested.
Improving text interpretation for address widget.
Include Qt translation files.
Prefer foreach() for Qt containers.

This version works very similar to the previous ones. For me the main problem is that the browser does not last 1 hour, if I am with a background music video. I am using the last UNIAAUD32 6.0 version.

The other day I got chance with Dooble and with SimpleBrowser a score of 522, with both open at the same time.

Dooble:

Today with the last version of Paul, I also got out of a test with 522, but it is not easy to repeat it.

The link https://www.speedtest.net/ work ok too.
But the first time I execute it with the last version of Paul, I close the browser with many open windows. Then with few windows it worked well.

No great surprise, but that page loads fine on Dooble on my Ubuntu laptop - so it's fixed in latest webkit. I've looked into building Qt5 but the current build instructions don't work. One priority for if/when bww resume work on Qt5 is to get it working for others, so that in the event of issues preventing bww working on it, then others can try and step in and provide updates.
-
Is the latest webkit Qt5 or Qt6? Dooble's Help-->About... should say.
As for building, I get quite a ways but always the system locks up. It's tricky, having to change from debug to rel and back to debug and back to rel or such IIRC.
-
Dooble is using Qt 6.2.4 on Ubuntu 22.10 beta..

Hi.
Today I was trying Dooble (2022.10.15.X) (the one that is on the RPM) and tested a webconference video chatting too call Jitsi.im. (Its open source and free hosted - no registration required).
I created my own chat meeting "https://meet.jit.si/WarpTest (https://meet.jit.si/WarpTest)". I conected one Windows machine and my Thinkpad L420 with ArcaOS 5.0.6.
There was no video or audio from the ArcaOS side as expected. From the ArcaOS machine I was able to see the video and hear the audio from the Windows machine.
The chat was also working. There where some defects on the ArcaOS side, some icons does not display correctly. Some of the functions like raising your hand works from ArcaOS.
The whiteboard also works from Dooble (ArcaOS) if you can find the "More actions" icon :) but I have no idea how to get out the whiteboard, since some icons are missing.
Check it out and let me know what do you think.

A quick question. Does this browser support add-ons like NoScript and adblock plus? If not why not?
I do not think its suports these type add-ons the Dooble rbowser. I think some functionality is present to block cookies and scripts. But I am not certain.
The Otter Browser might be revisited when the Dooble browser is more stable. That is the primary goal right now.

Hi Martin,
Since you have it running maybe you can tell me if it will run something like NoScript and Ad Block the two things I will not run a browser without.
-
https://textbrowser.github.io/dooble/ will tell you what features dooble supports...
-
Thanks Paul. The answer appears to be 'maybe', I suppose I should try it to find out. Have you put together a zip or wpi WITH EVERYTHING INCLUDED TO RUN IT?
-
Hi Martin,
Since you have it running maybe you can tell me if it will run something like NoScript and Ad Block the two things I will not run a browser without.
Hi Ivan
Dooble is so simple and minimalist that has no suport for those plugins as far as I know. I don't see support for it even on Windows.
The suggestion will be to contact the author and see if he can add support for it.
Here: https://github.com/textbrowser/dooble/issues
FYI:
- No Script is open source under the GNU GPL V3 - https://github.com/hackademix/noscript
- Ad Block is also GNU GPL V3 - https://github.com/adblockplus
Regards
-
Hi Ivan,
No extension support. As Martin says, it is a minimal browser. You can turn off JavaScript universally. You can have a list of blocked domains and good cookie management, I have cookie policy set to "Save Persistent Only" to avoid having to reenter credentials.
Eventually we might get a working falkon browser which does have a builtin ad blocker IIRC and they're planning on adding extensions.
The dependencies have become complex enough that no one has has the motivation to figure them out as using YUM is simpler.
If you don't like the idea of YUM/RPM being installed, you could just use it occasionally by removing the minimal stuff in config.sys and putting it in a cmd file so it only works in a cmd window. Mostly just %UNIXROOT%, LIBPATH (%BEGINLIBPATH%) and %PATH% should be good enough to run dooble.

Yes, I confirm that APNG and AVIF does not work on 2022.10.15.X. That page really makes Dooble very unresponsive on my VM (VirtualBox), and it crashed Doodble.

Using Paul's Qt6 build of dooble, all excepting mng work. Mng not working is expected. Dooble did vanish after loading the page and scrolling to the bottom of it though it was responsive till then.

Interesting given that page is https - so perhaps it's not quite as simple as just https not working. Wish there was something in popuplog.os2 or an exceptq report!
-
I loaded a few HTTPS sites and they all seemed to work. Nothing in popuplog or any trps. Did notice a bunch of cmake related trps in the root of my boot volume, dated Nov 14, 2022.
These quietly vanishing browsers are a bitch. It was happening a lot with FF/SM when using the latest rpm's of NSS and NSPR4. Badly enough that I switched to the intree versions of them, which fixed the browsers.

Site to test security protocols, https://clienttest.ssllabs.com:8443/ssltest/viewMyClient.html (https://clienttest.ssllabs.com:8443/ssltest/viewMyClient.html), does better then current SM, especially having TLS 1.3.
I see we're at the Chrome 83 level, still a ways behind.

The author accepted the request and he coded it in Dooble and made new release yesterday (Jan 13). It is only available for Linux yet, I haven't tried the feature. He called it "New setting: Retain Session Tabs. See Settings -> History."
But it means the author is checking the suggestions posted on github, so maybe we can suggest something else to improve the browser experience.
Do you want to give it a shot?
Regards
-
Martin that is worth the shot. Anything that makes it better and more stable is a good thing.

Perhaps you can build a version with Qt5?

Hi all,
I'm not sure what the capabilities of Dooble are supposed to be (I just asked how to get a binary for Windows as I'm not a programmer) but it'd be great to be able to use the Microsoft Office 365 web applications on OS/2-ArcaOS. I'm using Dooble 2022.10.15, X. i386 build. Qt version 5.15.2. I'm running ArcaOS 5.0.7.
I can log into https://login.microsoftonline.com successfully and almost get to the www.office.com like dashboard..but the browser crashes after most elements load.
Any way I can test it further or gather any information to help troubleshoot?
Thanks so much for the time!!

Hi
I confirm that "www.office.com" is also very unstable here with the same Dooble. It loads and render the page, but it only remains there for a little while and Dooble just quit. No POPUPLOG.OS2 message, no exceptq.
Do I have to turn on something to get a exceptq log?
Regards
-
It ran fine here for a bit using the Qt5 Dooble, eventually trping at a trap (int3) in a function that judging by its name, tries to allocate more shared memory.
It's pretty resource hungry, I had nothing else running and VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=3072. I think we're just hitting the limits of using a 32bit OS.
Martin, the exceptq should just work as long as an exception occurs. Seems a lot of these crashes don't raise an exception, the process just vanishes.
-
Hi
Checking the Java applications, I got the doubt, "What happened to ICQ?".
So, I checked it out and it turned into a chat application that requires you phone number to be activated. I test it on Dooble, but I don't have people to chat with yet ;)

Another test build of Dooble. I compiled this from the official Dooble Github mostly for David McKenna as his issue, https://github.com/textbrowser/dooble/issues/182 (https://github.com/textbrowser/dooble/issues/182), "Open links in current instance", has been resolved. No icon etc as it is a test build. Once an official release is made, I'll build an RPM.
Log into ftp.os2voice.org as user dry, password, your email address. There's also previous RPM's there in the RPM directory.
Edit: File is Dooble_10_07_23.zip

Example,
dooble.exe
dooble.exe --attach --url https://github.com --url https://nasa.gov

Hi Dave,
do you have a download link?
Greetings,

Using wget, something like:
wget ftp://dry@ftp.os2voice.org/Dooble_10_07_23.zip --ftp-password=email@address.com
Will download it....

Thanks Dave! Could you get the attach to work? Doesn't seem to do anything here.... unless I misunderstand. Textbrowser didn't close the ticket, so maybe it is not complete.
Regards,
EDIT - OK, I'm a little slow... had to add --attach as a parameter on the URL template 'Browser' setting and set as default. Now if dooble is open and I double-click another URL, the new one opens in the dooble instance already open...Nice!

For the moment it keeps working fine here.

Hi Dave
The official release of Dooble is now "2023.08.30". Can you please take a look at it to see if it compiles for ArcaOS?
Reagards
-
I built it on the 28th of Aug, ftp://dry@ftp.os2voice.org/rpm/dooble-2023.08.30-1.oc00.pentium4.rpm (http://ftp://dry@ftp.os2voice.org/rpm/dooble-2023.08.30-1.oc00.pentium4.rpm). Thought I announced it here.
Edit: the debug package and source package are also there.
-
Thanks Dave. Sorry for missing that one.
-
Hi Dave, thinking to upgrade older working version, could just the Dooble.exe file be replaced by the one in this rpm, or the entire package would have to be upgraded (or reinstalled) ?
Thank you
-
I think just updating the binary should work.
-
For David McKenna, who made a feature request upstream for "translate this page", which doesn't seem to work here.
-
OK, it needs DOOBLE_GOOGLE_TRANSLATE_URL set. For now I'm using dooble.sh with modifications (added .exe) to launch and it mostly works giving a quick test.
Remove the .txt from the attached dooble.sh.txt and launch in the same directory as Dooble.exe is in as "sh dooble.sh" without the quotes.
-
Thanks Dave! I gave it a quick try after using your 'sh' script and the 'translate page' appears in the tools list, but I couldn't get it to work at os2.org (which is what made me think to ask in the first place). I get a message saying the topic can't be found - so maybe a problem with the GOOGLE_TRANSLATE_URL? I'll give it a more thorough test later today after work.
Why do we need that script? Is that something that can be built in? If I don't use it the translate page tool is greyed out. Maybe I can add stuff to the 'Environment' tab in the properties folder?...
Regards,
-
Hi David, cmd.exe's SET command seems to be lacking compared to sh and export. Good news is that using this (all one line),
DOOBLE_GOOGLE_TRANSLATE_URL=https://%1.translate.goog/%2?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=%3&_x_tr_hl=%3&_x_tr_pto=wapp
in the environment tab of Dooble's program object does work.
Wonder how that can be automated? Or pass the URL in a set statement?
As for os2.org, which was my test URL, it does work, load os2.org, click Tools-->Translate, then in the new translated tab, click the topic works here. Not as nice as SeaMonkey.
-
Hey Dave,
Ah.. I added that line to my 'Environment' tab, then loaded 'www.os2.org' and clicked on the translate tool, and indeed, translation works and I can navigate the site thru the google translation page - thanks for that!
What I was doing before (using your script) was going to www.os2.org, then clicking on a forum, then clicking the translate tool, and getting the error mentioned - and in fact if I do that with the environment variable set as above it does the same thing.
So is there some deficiency in the translate environment variable? Why does it only work on the root of the website I wonder? Can you verify?
Regards,
EDIT: just tried it in SeaMonkey and it works fine there - no matter where you are in os2.org, if you choose translate, it works...
-
I get the same behaviour when clicking a forum then translate. I think it is using the translated URL instead of the original, or at least messing up the URL.
Note that in the environmental variable, I believe the %1,%2,%3 are arguments, yes, host, path and locale (using QLocale)
I assume that SeaMonkey has a different implementation of the translate thingy. The URL setting from about:config,
browser.translation.service;http://translate.google.com/translate?prev=/language_tools&u=
which should be https now.
-
Hey Dave,
I went to textbrowser's github site to make a comment about this, and I saw an entry was made to the Dooble code yesterday that might affect this - did you include the last entry to Dooble in your build?

I did now, seems to not need the environment variable set anymore, though I think it is still optional.
Removed last build in favour of this one.
-
Thanks again Dave! No change in behavior though... only works in root of website. I'll probably make a comment to textbrowser... didn't want to do it if there might have already been a fix.

Yea, the last commit just added the URL that we were using in the environmental variable. Still simplifies things
-
Hey Dave,
I have installed your last update of dooble file: Dooble_20112023.7z and tested it, this is my impression:
after a lots of test with vary url I have noted this strange behaviour, if I use the new google to translate a page, this page is rendered in two different way that I attach as two picture captured using PMVIEW:
- 2023-11-captured002.jpg original without image
- 2023-11-Captured001.jpg processed by GOOGLE translate with image
How this can happen ?
Thank for your work Dave.

Thanks Dave.
It is working as expected here. FYI, here are the changes:
Decreased launch time for non-splash-screen: load splash screen's pixmap only if necessary.
Include GitHub links in release notes. GitHub ticket #203.
Initiate a floating-clock timer as needed. Preserve resources.
Injected style sheets are now stored as UTF-8.
JavaScript Console. GitHub ticket #202. Please see Tools.
New --full-screen and --help.
New splash image. Thanks louies0623. GitHub ticket #206.
Source-only release?
Speedier compilations via fewer includes.

That's interesting, hopefully the RPM will be the same. Trying to move away from using the BWW stuff for the desktop folder. Slowly getting there.
-
A quick question , does it run NoScript or something like it? If it doesn't then I am not interested, sorry.
-
It now remembers history here. That's a nice enhancement.
I find it doesn't really render more websites than Firefox, but I think that's because over years of using Firefox 45, I stopped visiting sites that don't render. Still, it's pretty disappointing that so few websites work.

Hi Dave, I can confirm what Remy wrote. I tested all versions and so far this is the best one, loads faster than the previous versions, closes well as well.
Thank you for your continuing efforts!

I can confirm seems bit more stable, I can browse internet longer than the previous Dooble versions.
God work.

Hi Dave, will be glad to test it soon as rpm ready. By my side confirm that the november release solved some previous issues like trap on exit and self-termination as the website workload became heavy. Still remains the oddity of hiding word characters in some pages, usually the head titles (www.repubblica.it , www.libero.it).
Doing a very good job on this project

Hello Mauro
I installed Dooble in Windows and I didn't saw any of the problems that you have. My guess is that this font / display issues comes more as an issue of the Qt5 port than the Dooble port.
Regards
-
Hi Mauro, it is actually a bug in the webengine where only some SVG's are displayed. I did file a bug report about it at Bitwise's issue tracker. Have to wait on them.
Also note that all I'm doing is basically building the upstream code and adding the icon to the executable in this case, so it is interesting that there are so many changes from version to version.
The author is the one to thank, I notice that he also has a patreon page that he references if anyone wants to thank him with a donation. Upstream website, https://github.com/textbrowser/dooble (https://github.com/textbrowser/dooble)
-
Thanks Dave for the new version - works great here too. And thanks Martin for requesting the password repository at www.github.com/textbrowser... looks like it may be in our future! Dooble just keeps getting better.
@Mauro - I don't see your issue here either. What fonts do you have loaded in your settings? I have:
Cursive: Comic Sans MS
Fantasy: Monotype Sans WT
Fixed: DejaVu Sans Mono
Pictograph: DejaVu Serif
Sans Serif: DejaVu Sans
Serif: DejaVu Serif
Standard: DejaVu Serif
Maybe try these?
@Ivan - no plugins like NoScript, but you can turn off Javascript completely in settings, or on a tab-by-tab basis (right click tab, uncheck 'JavaScript'), or with this new version even inject your own! (Tools: Javascript console)
Regards,
-
Hi David, the problem is SVG being used to draw characters, so doesn't matter what fonts you have installed. The Simplebrowser has the same issue.

Hello,
When I use dooble it takes minutes to scroll, I only have this with 2 laptops. I don't have this problem on my desktop comp.
Even if I have to fill something out, it takes minutes.
So I'm curious if others are experiencing this, I have had this since the first version of dooble or otter-browser. It doesn't matter whether I use version of Qt6 or Qt5.
Even when I create a new profile, scrolling remains very slow.
Strange thing is that I only have this with browsers, I don't see this with other gui programs.
That's why I still use FF as a browser.
Anyone have an idea?

Hi Tellie,
You say only on your laptops... what happens if you plug in a USB mouse and use it - is it still slow? Maybe there is a mouse driver issue with your mouse pad... I don't see it here with my laptops though. There is a test Amouse driver at ArcaNoae you could try - I needed it for one of my laptops for other reasons.

I use the latest test mouse from yesterday build.
I have a wireless mouse connected, but I could try with a wired mouse if that makes any diff.

When I use dooble it takes minutes to scroll, I only have this with 2 laptops. I don't have this problem on my desktop comp. Even if I have to fill something out, it takes minutes.
I have (or had) this problem. Answer these questions to see if we have the same issue:
1) Are these machines able to emit a beep? Not a sound through the soundcard but a tone through the speaker or transducer on the mobo. If yes, it's a different problem.
2) After scrolling and finding that nothing happens, does moving the mouse around _a lot_ over the window cause the accumulated scroll actions to happen all at once?
3) Assuming you're running AOS, run 'ACPISTAT | MORE'. At the top is a list or IRQs and the number of times they've been triggered. Is the count for IRQ 0 very low (in hundreds or less) or is IRQ 0 simply missing (either of these may be true)?
If the answer to (1) is no but (2) and (3) are yes, then we have the same problem: the clock which feeds the 8254 timer circuit has been gated off.
The 8254 has 3 timers: one is used to make sound while another is used by many apps such as Dooble as a "high-resolution timer". To use it, the app sets a counter to the number of milliseconds required. Each clock pulse then causes it to decrement that counter. When that counter reaches 0, it issues an IRQ 0.
If the clock signal has been turned off, the counter never decrements, the IRQ is never triggered, and Dooble fails to scroll. There is one oddity here: for unknown reasons, significant USB activity (or at least, USB mouse activity) will trigger an IRQ 0. That's why moving the mouse may cause scrolling - it mimics the timer going off.
I spent a huge amount of time identifying the nature of the problem but never came up with a solution, only a work-around. The high-res timer can only be used by one app at a time. If it's busy, the app has to fall back to one of the system's conventional timers. So, I wrote a little util that claims the HRT for as long as possible to force Dooble and other stuff to use an alternate timer. This works fine for scrolling but multimedia performance is terrible - VLC is unusable.
AFAICT, only a firmware update would fix the problem - and that's unlikely because MS stopped using the 8254 in Win 7 or 8. Consequently there's no way to demonstrate to some Tech Support droid running Win 11 that there even is a problem.

Yes i hear a beep sometimes. Alto is a sound that i get when f.e running a app that i have compiled but it's gives a trap

It seems that Dooble is unable to pass cloudflare security !
https://realclimatescience.com/2022/11/nasa-noaa-us-data-tampering

Hi
Seems to have that in common with Seamonkey then...
Regards
Pete
-
SeaMonkey gets a little further with a different user agent.
The Qt6 build of Dooble gets the furthest, showing a prove you're human checkbox and getting stuck there.
I've seen others on different platforms complaining about cloudflare, hopefully it doesn't become more common.

Could Cloudfare be preventing realclimatescience.com as a scam? It's name looks too similar to realclimate.org, which is an award-winning climate website. If you are selling a sweetened soda, you cannot call it Coca-Cola-Drink.
https://www.cloudflare.com/ does display, even on Firefox 45, which seems odd. Why would they display their own website, but not that of a paying customer?
Cloudfare's web page says they protect against threats, and a websites with a fake names are a legitimate threat. Not that the realclimatescience.com website is a threat. It's just an opinion website. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. The name of the website does seem a bit questionable.
Incidentally, realclimate.org does not display on Dooble or on Firefox45. Cloudfare does not seem to be involved.
-
Now I got the cloudflare BS at slashdot, using SM and Dooble.
-
Shutting down the browser and clearing the cache seems to have fixed that. Still long term doesn't look good if more sites use cloudflare.

Was already done but idn't change the low shared storage utilization
-
Unluckily, you probably can't reduce it too much more, I'm seeing about 43 MB of low shared memory usage, along with a few hundred MB's of high shared memory.
Helps to have VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT as high as you can without instability.
Truth is that upstream doesn't care too much about memory as they don't care about 32 bit systems much anymore. There likely are ways to lower the webengines memory usage, need Dmitiry to get back to working on it and it sounds like he has a lot on his plate with us being low priority.
As an aside, github just got worse with Dooble-Qt5, no longer displaying the code and such. It's depressing.
-
I could reduce near 8% of Dooble low shared storage use after setting following dll highmem
What I see is when dooble is up and first page loaded (qwant lite in my case), about 10Mb of low storage are taken !
It is not a lot but it allow to work safer with other pgms
The one using a lot of storage : libcn0 but can not be set to highmem or many problem may occur

Thanks Dave! Tried to get the rpm, but it wants a password to login. Can you give the password?

Your email address is the usual one. Some use a fake address.
-
Thanks - got it. So far it works fine. Also got the zip file and there is a 'Data' folder in there with a couple of jar files that are not in the rpm. What are they?
Regards,
-
They're for testing the new support for jar files. Never could get it to work here. I think our Qt ports need more file system support.
-
Dave,
Well, it kinda works here (I think) only if the jar file is on my unixroot drive. But all it does is display the contents - if I click on any file displayed nothing happens. What exactly is it supposed to do?
One weird thing: I get a new 'dooble_settings.db' file in the root of my boot drive with this version. Never had that before...

Basically display the contents. See the release notes under help for a link to the discussion.
There's a problem with drive letters, I think in our Qt ports, both 5 and 6.
One weird thing: I get a new 'dooble_settings.db' file in the root of my boot drive with this version. Never had that before...
So there is, didn't notice before. Last one in my profile is dated 12/02/24 so something changed around then. I'll have to investigate.
-
Finally got around to investigating the settings db being stored in the root of the drive that Dooble runs from.
Seems to be a Qt bug where whether the environment variables are prepared before or after the application is declared.
This fixed it here,

Really shouldn't matter as far as I can see. Be interesting if the Qt6 build of Dooble has the same problems.
New binary at ftp://dry@ftp.os2voice.org/Dooble_21_02_2024.zip (http://ftp://dry@ftp.os2voice.org/Dooble_21_02_2024.zip), password your email, just replace the binary in @unixroot\usr\bin for now.
I did have to start over with my profile to get the larger text size with XWorkPlace. I also had to set QTWEBENGINE_DICTIONARIES_PATH for Dooble to find my dictionaries.
Only lightly tested so far.
-
I also uploaded all the dictionary files, ftp://dry@ftp.os2voice.org/Qt_Dictionaries.zip (http://ftp://dry@ftp.os2voice.org/Qt_Dictionaries.zip).
-
Dave,
Thanks for the updates... seem to be working well here. No more db file in the root... Haven't seen that in the QT6 versions, but the latest hasn't been ported yet.
Regards,
-
The patch was Qt6 and QSqlDatabase, committed last Christmas. The change that broke our port was unrelated but in the same patch.
Interestingly I see this patch too, not sure why it was committed.

Hi Dave
Installed the dictionary files and set the environment path to J:\usr\share\qt5\qtwebengine_dictionaries\en
Doodle gives the warning that it cannot find file J:\usr\share\qt5\qtwebengine_dictionaries\en\en_GB.bdic - not surprising as it is not in the zip package. I wonder, Do the *.dic files need to be renamed to *.bdic ?
Regards
Pete
-
Hi Pete,
Try with the environment path as J:\usr\share\qt5\qtwebengine_dictionaries
Set the language in the settings.
-
Hi Dave
Same warning - this is in Settings.
Should there be *.bdic files in the zip package?

I thought I tested this, looking I guess not, age?
Anyways, looking, I must have converted them. Should be a howto in the zip, needs updating, which I'll quote. Mind the drive letters. Actually perhaps I need to add this. It was for Qt6, should be the same for Qt5.
[L:\qt6\bin\qtwebengine_dictionaries]qwebengine_convert_dict ./en_CA.dic ./en_CA.bdic./en_CA.dic_delta not found.
Reading ./en_CA.aff
Reading ./en_CA.dic
Serializing...
Verifying...
Writing ./en_CA.bdic
Success. Dictionary converted.
Tomorrow, I'll improve the howto
Edit: Improvements welcome

Hi Dave
That command may work for qt6 but not qt5 as I get
SYS1041: The name qwebengine_convert_dict is not recognized as an
internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
No "howto" in the zip file.

Hello
I have an issue with our Dooble and Joomla 4. The OS2World game site does not look right. It is like it showing the mobile version of the site.
https://www.os2world.com/games/
I tried in the Windows version of dooble, and has the same issue. I reported it to the author and told me that the Windows version I'm using is too old, and it works fine in Qt6.
I want to get the latest Windows version of Dooble, but I can not find it on the git. (I already asked the author about that)
Do you think this is an issue of our Qt5 ? and qtWebEngine?
Regards

Hi Martin, I get the same results with both Qt5 and Qt6 Dooble as well as the Qt5 simplebrowser.
My first thought was it was due to the user agent. Tried with SeaMonkey's, same result.
So yes, it does seem like a webengine bug. or to old webengine. Have to test on Linux at some point.

Latest version of Dooble for Windows: https://github.com/textbrowser/dooble/releases/download/2023.11.30/Dooble-2023.11.30_Windows.zip
(releasing binaries happens about twice per year, the rest of the releases is source-only)

Tom thank yo for providing this for testing. I have found that Dobble runs multimedia much better in Windows than Otter or Falcon. Although Windows 11 security balks at the exe. AAnd it runs better than Dobble QT5 in Arca OS.

I didn't build this - this build comes from the creator of Dooble (textbrowser). I only passed along the link where it could be found.
That it runs better than the OS/2 port is not surprising: the OS/2 port of Qt is far from complete, and that is the basis for the OS/2 port of Dooble.

hi all, sorry if I ask something already written here somewhere as this is the 21th page of the thread and not much easy to retrieve a specific indication; since I'm following the results of Dooble QT5 updates which has a reliable behavior on my OS2 Warp4.52 VM , like to learn where can I find its latest version, better if in rpm.
Thank you much meantime for the effort spent in this task, which by my side confirm is giving useful results.

Dave Yeo uploads his buidls to the ftp server of os2voice:
ftp://dry@ftp.os2voice.org/dooble-2024.01.25.zip for a zipfile, and
ftp://dry@ftp.os2voice.org/rpm/dooble-2024.01.25-1.oc00.pentium4.rpm for a rpm-version
You will be asked for a password when using the above - just fill in a/your own email address.

thank you much, did the same in november 2023 but lost this reference among the posts/reply
