Applications / FAT Diskette with truncated long file name file
« on: October 30, 2021, 03:49:37 pm »

I'm using ArcaOS 5.0.6 on a Thinkpad L420. I attached an USB Floppy drive and started to read some old FAT diskettes that used to have some files with long names stored in Windows (possible Windows 98 or XP)

The filenames looks truncated (not sure which is the actual word) to 8.3.

Is there a way to see the full file name? I remember that I used to have this issue on the past but I don't know how I fixed it, or if it was fixable.

Games / DOS VDM - USB and Game port Gamepad support
« on: September 30, 2021, 11:33:38 pm »

At Warpstock there was a quick Q&A with Lewis and there was some talk about ArcaOS as a retro gaming platform.
There was some fast comment about gamepads/joysticks and DOS old games.

I asked on the FreeDOS mailinglist if there was something like a way to connect an USB gamepad and some "interpreter" that will allow old DOS games see it as a game port joystick. (So, in the end you can be able to play games that are supposed to use a game port joystick with an USB joystick).

Bret Johnson, that developed some USB device drivers for DOS ( , answer me that it is possible with his driver, but under a very specific USB hardware set running FreeDOS.

The final idea will be to be able to support an USB gamepad under DOS VDM for old DOS games, but it seems we are still some steps behind.

I just post this as a discussion topic and maybe something of the open source DOS USB driver/program can be useful someday for the OS/2 platform.

Utilities / MultiUser support for OS/2
« on: September 24, 2021, 06:28:40 pm »

During Warpstock, there was a question if it had been considered for ArcaOS a multiuser support feature. We know that currently there are no plans, and I personally have no need for it, but I feel like it would be interesting to how an OS/2 multiuser support should work, only as an theoretical exercise.

What Multiuser support should provide?
- A way to create roles, usersIDs and password for the OS.
- A logon window when the WPS boots asking for UserID and Password
- A specific location the the user desktop and personal files.
- One user files should not be able to get accessed by other user.

At least this is like the basic things that came to my mind.

Now, I want to ask, there some multiuser software available for OS/2. Do you have some experience (good or bad) with it?

Applications / Running old OS/2 Software - Issues
« on: September 13, 2021, 06:29:48 pm »

Since I'm reorganizing hobbes I'm also enjoying myself by trying to run some old OS/2 software.
I want to request for some help and I want to use this thread for some old OS/2 software that does not run on today's ArcaOS.

My first one is:

1) Present!  (1992-04-09). A presentation software, maybe like some basic PowerPoint or Freelance. (source code available)

It loads and stops. It gives this error on the log.

Programming / REXX - Top header comments Suggestion
« on: August 24, 2021, 03:41:03 pm »

I know this is a thing of personal taste, but can you please recommend a good "comment header" for REXX scripts.

For example I liked this one:
Code: [Select]
/* REXX */
/* Title : Meteor                                           */
/* Desc  : A simple action game                             */
/* Author: Jeff Byrd,       */
/* Date  : 12/22/95                                         */
/*                                                          */
/* Notes : If you run this program from a mapped network    */
/*         drive, the high score list and demos will be     */
/*         shared among all the players.                    */
/*         Make sure to note all the hints on how to play.  */
/*         To clear the high score/demo list, delete all    */
/*         *.MSV files.                                     */

Any other layout that you like or recommend for the REXX scripts?

Applications / Replacing "Save as..." dialog (Experiment)
« on: June 02, 2021, 05:26:41 pm »

I kind of prefer the "Save as..." dialog from Qt, instead of the FOC that comes in ArcaOS. I have nothing against FOC.

Will it be a way to create an experimental "hack" to replace the call of the "Save as..." dialog to call the one from Qt? Just something very rough to experiment on a VM.
I will like to experiment the compatibility of the OS/2 applications if that get replaced.

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Hobbes (Files) Reoganization
« on: May 14, 2021, 05:38:59 pm »

I still have the "itchiness" to reorganize some files in hobbes, and even also some other places like OS2site.
But I hold back, some people may not like reorganizing and renaming of the files, some other may tell me "do not bother on that", and it is also a huge task.

Also there have been no reply from the hobbes administrator on my offer to help and have a quicker access to modify file descriptions of the database and been able to move files to the corresponding directory.

And also, it is big job to try organize all the OS/2 software available. From one side I think it is good to keep all the versions of the software, but from the other side I understand that some sites (like hobbes) should only have the latest version (with the exception of drivers). Times has change and storage space is not problem for OS/2 programs like it was on the past. (like my crazy OHFOWG and the OS2World Github (7GB) )

My concern with OS/2 preservation had been growing when I saw how old software disappears from the internet (some can not be found even on the waybackmachine). I don't want to delete anything. I hopefully will like to backup the old things with the old names in different items and later focus in the working apps, latest versions and renaming and moving the files.

What do you think?

- Should I try to make my own public file repository? If I try that I will need help, I don't want more server administration with that.
- Should I keep trying to improve hobbes order in this slow way of uploading files with .txt template file?
- Should I take care that "itchiness" with some other thing and forget this thing?

Ian, (he runs the os2site), your opinion is important for me.

I also want to do something collaborative with the help of several people since it is a big task.

Applications / Desktop Enhancement for WPS
« on: May 02, 2021, 06:48:33 pm »

I want to test some of the old desktop enhancements tools on ArcaOS 5.0.6 VMs. This can be very experimental and it make break the WPS, but this is why I'm using a test VMs.

1) I want to try WPS-Wizard, which I know it is very experimental.
But I can not install it. The install.cmd procedure can not register CWObject on ArcaOS 5.0.6 WPS.

I get:
Current directory is C:\Programs\wpswizard

Registering class CWWizzSettings...
Registering class CWMenuFolder...
Registering class CWLaunchArea...
Registering class CWObject...

Error while registering class CWObject
Deregistering class CWWizzSettings
Deregistering class CWLaunchArea
Deregistering class CWMenuFolder

 An error occured. WPS-Wizard is not installed properly.

Use a tool like checkini to check/repair your INI files.

Press <ENTER> to quit.

I did a "chechkini /c /r" restarted the WPS, but I still can not install and register the class.

2) I want to try Dialog Enhancer. There is this installer on hobbes. But I can not install it. The installer says it can not find the .txt files that are already there.  I also don't understand how it is supposed to apply the .DAT updates of it.  (os2site)

Any tips are welcome.

Off Topic discussions / Image upscaling with AI
« on: May 01, 2021, 02:50:55 am »

Just as a funny footnote. I had been upscaling some old OS/2 images with the free online tools available with AI.
For example this illustration that used to be 559x416 to 2236x1660
Both versions are here:

I also was playing with some OS/2 logos that were available on the web and were very small.

Some people don't like it, but it is just for fun. Maybe I should try the video upscaling tools for some old OS/2 videos ;)

Multimedia / [SOLVED] TiMidity++ error on WPS (Ksoftseq - sound loop)
« on: April 19, 2021, 10:23:29 pm »

I installed TiMidity++ 2.13.3 R3 on my ArcaOS 5.0.6 VM.  (Timidy++ and eawparts)

1) I'm not sure if it is TiMidity++ player v2.13.2 R3, or version 2.13.3 R3, since the WarpIn installer says that.

2) I'm experiencing an issue with WPS. If I open the folder in the desktop that contains the MID files, the WPS crashes and restart intermediately.

If I run the MID files from the command line like "play FILE=sonataa.MID" it reproduces the sound. I guess this mean that this version of TIMIDITY++ is now integrated to MMOS2, right?  (that would be awesome for some games that uses MID files that I want to test)

3) The MMOS2 app, "Midi Player" hangs when I try to open the MIDI file.

I would appreciate if someone else can try it out and see if it is an issue on my VM.

Article Discussions / Run IBM OS/2 on Android using Limbo PC Emulator
« on: April 16, 2021, 06:37:49 pm »

I just noticed on social networks this YouTube Video.
- Run IBM OS/2 on Android using Limbo PC Emulator

The author doesn't not seems experienced with OS/2, but it is interesting that he experimented doing this.

Limbo PC Emulator is based in QEMU.

Hardware / Keyboard special keys on OS/2-ArcaOS
« on: April 16, 2021, 12:08:03 am »

This is a subject that I have left behind and I don't know much about it.

I know there is the "Keyboard - OEM Keys / Windows Keys" on ArcaOS's "System Setup" and works fine here.
But what about the other special keys that a keyboard may have? Volume, mute, play, etc, etc.. is someone there with experience mapping those keys, or any other software that is recommended for this ?

Hardware / ArcaOS - Audio Equipment video
« on: April 13, 2021, 02:58:38 pm »

I found this video from "Sergey Glazunov". (ArcaOS (OS/4 - kernel, HPET support) Audioinstrument)
It uses ArcaOS for some Audio equipment, but I don't understand, if it is only playback, or if it has some special hardware working with ArcaOS or some specific software I may not know.

I'm not an "audio aficionado", I don't know much about this subject, any basic explanation is welcome too.

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / PC Magazine OS/2 related articles
« on: April 01, 2021, 08:22:54 pm »

You may know that on my free time I like to organize the OS2World wiki, and try to link as much as OS/2 related material (let say it helps me with my anxiety these days).

I want to try to list and link all the PC Magazine OS/2 related article:
- The general OS/2 subject articles here (OS2World wiki) (software reviews, OS reviews, critic, etc)
- The development OS/2 related articles here (EDM/2 wiki)

The good thing is that is seems that Google books got permission to republish some the PC Magazine issues and we can found them online: Google Books.

I'm now requesting your help, if you find some OS/2 article on PC Magazine, let me know the name or issue or date, and I will include it to the wiki list.

BTW: I know PC Magazine was not our preferred Magazine at that time, but I just want to list the OS/2 articles.

Also, if you think we should do the same thing with other magazines (list its OS/2 related articles), let me know.

General Discussion / [SOLVED] Gone?
« on: March 23, 2021, 07:36:53 pm »

This is just a curious note. I noticed that is no longer working for several days (all this month?). I had to update some of the OS2World wiki links to the wayback machine archive, some links like announcements, etc. The last Waybackmachine archive was at Feb 12.  The "" is still working (I don't advice buying eComStation today, better ArcaOS).
