I doubt Arca Noae has the resources to port a web browser. If you have used Microsoft Edge, you may also wonder if Microsoft has sufficient resources.

They have stated that running on modern hardware is a priority, as well as having a legal right to sell OS/2.

While a system like Gateway Solo can't run the ArcaOS installation media, it can run eComStation 2.1 installation media.

This is a trade-off. Systems as old or older may really be better off with eComStation 2.1. (The eComStation 2.2 beta is DVD based, so ArcaOS is a better choice.)

It would be an interesting exercise to put the ArcaOS installer on a diet and get it to fit on a CD.

I have a Dell GX-240 with the same limitations as the Gateway Solo.

Deleting %HOME%/.double allows me to see the page. If I exit, dooble hangs, but responds to window list->close. If I start double again, the page still renders fine.

Oddly, Windows 11/Edge does not properly render the page, but only gets the last entry field and button.

I am seeing a website for a bookstore come up completely blank under dooble.

https://www.hexenduction.com/

This should show an entry field and a button.

Wouldn't plain WiFi support, which at Arca Noae is apparently nearly done, be better? Do you see machines with USB, but without WiFi?

Maybe it's just me, but I could not download with Firefox 45. I could and did download using an older dooble build. The new build runs fine, but lacks a program icon on my system. That maybe the fault of Dynamic Icons. I like the improved history and bookmarks.

The gl-ar750s that Doug recommends is part of the same line of routers. I expect newer routers will not be limited to WPA2 as the gl-ar750s is. My use case is for travel, and single band is fine. For home use, Doug's is better, and faster ones are coming.

The Mango router is excellent, but it is not a USB router. It uses USB for power, but Ethernet for a LAN connection. Mango is just one of a family of routers with different capabilities. They are using Open Source ddwrt and GL.inet software. You can do a lot with them if you are a network geek.

Thanks for your comments. I didn't know about help->troubleshooting information.

You are correct about the screensaver installed. The screen saver was not enabled, however.

I'm trying to chase down some other system hangs to do with Lotus SmartSuite, but when the system hangs, it's sometimes difficult to see what caused it. Then I have to leave a system up for a long time to see if it hangs. This is a testing scheme that takes a long time to resolve.

Applications / Thunderbird hang
« on: February 13, 2023, 04:09:57 am »
Someone suggested this experiment, and I tried it. I configured Thunderbird to not check for new mail. Then I opened Thunderbird and left it open, but doing nothing. With the build of Thunderbird in ArcaOS 5.0.7, dated March 23, 2020, the computer will hang after three or four days. By hang I mean no response to mouse or keyboard input, no response to network.

With the thunderbird-45.8.0.en-US-i686-06-06-22.os2.zip  build, dated June 6, 2022, no hang occurs even after eight days.

I don't know how an OVA works, but I'll give it a try.

Access to RAM in the 32-bit address space is going to be one of the next hoops to jump through. The newest systems are lucky to get 2 GB RAM. What we need is to be closer to 4 GB.

An adaptation that might help is to set the swapper to use PAE to access 64-bit memory, but direct access to nearly 4 GB would be better.

Programming / Re: WebSite / HTML editor - what do we have?
« on: February 02, 2023, 03:40:24 pm »
The best editors are cloud-based at this point. I'd vote for wix.com. But it does not run on our browser(s).

In a way, it's better to compose on OS/2, because these new editors also create pages that won't work on our Firefox. I need to check dooble builds on that.

Ugh...  I remember again why I'm not a programmer.....   >:(

It isn't for everyone. You might be able to document how to use an OS/2 program. The skills needed to make a program are different from the skills needed to describe how to use a program.

Long ago I was with a bunch of hard core Unix programmers, and one of them had to use Windows NT. So I looked over at his screen, and it had a full screen command prompt (running vi) and the registry editor open. He had figured out how to kill explore (which normal people would have called the Windows desktop), which was of no use to him.
