General Discussion / RPM to WarpIn
« on: October 12, 2024, 01:37:15 am »
Martin,

I may be an old fogy but I don't see any real use for your "warpsnap" idea unless you have a very small screen (about the size 10 inch tablet).  My 30 inch (2560x1600) monitor has enough space without trying to be smart.

What I would like to see is the return of WARPIN as the main way of installing software rather than trying to use yum to convert OS/2 to Linux

Thanks again.  Your thought of using a ram disk won't work because my computer is on 24/7/360, it gets shut down twice a year to allow for dust removal and physical checking.

Thank you Dariusz.  You are correct about the disk cache being what I am concerned about.  Now to find out how to auto clear it when firefox closes and I will be happy.

Internet / firefox question
« on: September 26, 2024, 03:23:28 pm »
This question comes from running out of disk space for the mozprofile directory.
Digging through the files I found a cache2 dir which has a sub dir entries which had several thousand files in it.  I deleted that subdir and got the disk space back.  The problem is it keeps on being created and I don't see a way of killing its reproduction.

Why is it created and how does one get rid of it permanently?

I have a suggestion that might work for you.

First let me describe my setup.  I have 5 computers around my desk all connected to my keyboard, monitor and track ball via a multiport hdmi switch.  This allows me to use my OS/2 Warp, Arcaos, linux mint, win 7 and have one available with provision to plug in one of several hard disks as needed for backup.  The win 7 machine I salvaged when a neighbour threw it out.

My suggestion is for you to decide what are the main programs you want to use and setup a computer to do that then look for a salvage computer to run the rest and also run as a NAS,

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS 5.1

Hi Remy,

After all your fun and games is there any advantage going to 5.1?  At the moment I am quite happy with 5.0.7 that is working without problems on my 30 inch 2560x1600 monitor.

It sounds as if you need EMT4PM to create your disks.  That package did everything I needed with manipulating floppy disks and their images.  Now I have everything stored on a set of 2 tb disks.

Interesting what you are all saying but I will stay with my AOO 4.1.2 that does everything I want and even allows me to solve problems for my win using friends.

Did you try AOO 4.1.2 rather than the older 4.1.11?  I ask because I see no reason to use the older version.

Hi Martin,

I may be getting old and have used OS/2 since v 1.20 (1989) but I have never heard of JPFS or do you mean JFS?

You could have a look at JFTP 5 which I use on my beta warp 4 Merlin box.  It uses open JDK 6.

I have my Linux computer, running Mint 19.3 Cinnamon, under my desk connected to my 28 inch 16;10 monitor via a 4-port HDMI switch.  The switch allows me to also check on a data logger running on a very cut down win 7 box as well as my original OS/2 Warp 4.

Comparing OS/2 desktop with the Linux desktop they are setup almost alike - I have the warpcenter at the top of the screen and the linux equivalent is at the bottom of the screen/

Applications / Re: XWP Problem - Shut down
« on: July 04, 2024, 10:21:52 am »
Thanks Martin, I had completely forgotten about that - now I can finish restoring that computer.

Memo to self: Never let a rabid Window$ user use an OS/2 computer - they will mess it up.

Applications / XWP Problem - Shut down
« on: July 03, 2024, 09:14:16 pm »
I have just updated xwp 1.0.16 on one of my computers and found a problem or I'm missing something.

All my earlier installs of xwp  actually shut down the computers when I use the extended shut down - 1.0.16 closes the OS but does NOT actually shut the computer down which is what I expect.  Am I doing something wrong or have I missed some setting?

I must agree with Andrew about getting a sensible keyboard and since most, if not all laptops have USB ports, the simple answer is to use a USB keyboard.
