Applications / nguest2.exe (netop) fails to start

Hi All

I have a "headless" server which I control using netop.

I am booted from ArcaOS5.0.0+ (+ = various updates applied).

I have not used the server for a couple of weeks but last time I used it there was no problem running nguest2.exe to shutdown the server.

Today I booted the server to play a couple of media files (films). When I had watched the films I clicked on the nguest2 icon so that I could shutdown the "headless" server.

Nothing happened.

I opened a command window in \programs\netop and entered nguest2. The command window flashed - tried opening nguest2.exe I think - and that was it. No indication why nguest2.exe will not start...

After a couple more attempts and a bit of head scratching I had a look at popuplog.os2. I see a lot of these entries for nguest2.exe:-

Anyone have any idea why a program that used to run fine now throws a sys3175 instead?


Out of interest I booted my eCS2.2b2 installation. No problems running nguest2.exe from there.

There are very few differences between eCS2.2b2 and ArcaOS5.0.0+ - just a couple of "ArcaOS only" drivers. I modified eCS2.2b2 by adding those restricted drivers and rebooting. No change, nguest2.exe runs fine, so it it not a "acpi/snap/other restricted drivers" problem.

Any thoughts?

Games / The Digger Games Menu

Hi All

Martins discussions about retro DOS and OS/2 games prompted me to put a menu system together for what was one of my early favourite DOS games, Digger from Windmill Software, and the extra game files available. This menu system is for use with the OS/2 port of Digger *and* the Extra game files.

This is an easy way to select and play any of the digger games available on your system; simply run through the
file dialogs to setup the menu system on first use and then play Digger or any of the extra game files available by doubleclicking or pressing Enter on the selected game.

I did try to post the above as a news item on os2world but that seems to have failed...

Programming / eWorkplace ini file entries?

Hi All

I've been doing a little updating to USBcfg and decided to add the option to reboot when saving changes.

Rather than reinvent the wheel I thought I'd use the XWorplace Shutdown - xshutdwn.cmd - if XWorkplace is installed with a "fallback" of using the standard system shutdown for non-XWorkplace users.

The above works in my limited testing but the thought occurs:
I am reading the os2.ini Application: XWorkplace, Key: XFolderPath to locate the XWorkplace installed directory. Does eWorkplace (The eCS cutdown version of XWorkplace) use the same os2.ini Application/Key entries? - And does that apply to any cutdown version installed by ArcaOS?

Applications / Seamonkey and AOO4.1.6 problem

Hi All

Not sure if this has already been spotted by anyone...


I tried to start seamonkey - Mozilla/5.0 (OS/2; Warp 4.5; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.0 SeaMonkey/2.42.9esr - which failed and did not even raise a blip on the cpu monitor

Checking with pmdll I see that the "nixy bits" nspr4, libc066, libcx0 and gcc1 are reported as "Dll initialization failed"  (or similar wording).

Interesting...

I have made no system changes and no reboots, not even a Desktop restart, since last using seamonkey a couple of hours earlier.

Since last using seamonkey I have used A004.1.6 to write a letter and started cupsd.exe in order to print the letter.

I have also run a couple of OS/2 games that do not use any of the "nixy bits".

So, the culprit is probably AOO4.1.6 as killing cupsd.exe has not helped.

I saved this text as Desktop\seamonkey.txt and closed the editor (e.exe)

Before rebooting I tried a Restart Desktop. That resulted in most of my Desktop disappearing.

I hit the power off button - no, I did not use shutdown as I wanted to force a chkdsk on reboot.

Having powered on the system booted to my nearly fully populated Desktop - just the recently saved seamonkey.txt missing and not found anywhere on the system so I had to recreate the above from memory.

So, was the seamonkey problem Desktop or AOO4.1.6 (or both) related?

I guess the answer is to run seamonkey for a little while then close it then run AOO4.1.6 and cupsd.exe to see what happens.

The answer is that after running AOO4.1.6 the system needs to be rebooted in order to run seamonkey - and possibly any other app that needs the "nixy bits".


Has anyone else made this discovery? - and is there a workaround to avoid the reboot?

General Discussion / Problems booting ArcaOS

Hi All

This is a problem I have been trying to sort for a few weeks but without success.

When the system has been powered off for a while, eg overnight, ArcaOS often does not boot fully at first attempt - can take 3 or 4 attempts. If "Loading OS2DASD.DMD" is displayed for longer than the usual flicker the system then stops booting with "Loading OS2LVM.DMD" displayed. This behaviour started around 6 weeks ago with the occasional failure on first cold boot and has gradually got to the stage where booting ArcaOS can now take upto 4 attempts on most cold boots. Sometimes, just to add to my confusion, ArcaOS boots on the first attempt with no problem.

I also have eCS2.1 and 2.2beta2 installed on this system. There is no problem cold booting either of those installations, both boot at first attempt.

The config.sys files for ecs2.1, ecs2.2b2 and ArcaOS are identical - except for drive letter involved - with regard to DEVICE and BASEDEV drivers and the driver files used are the same on all 3 systems.

If the problem affected all 3 installations then I would suspect either hardware or a flaky driver but the problem only seems to affect ArcaOS - it has not shown up when cold booting either of the eCS installations.

Posting in the hope that someone may have some thoughts...

Applications / VirtualBox problems

Hi All

After a long time of not using vbox I decided to "hookup" the already installed package to ArcaOS. This simply involved creating a Desktop object to start vbox with, adding vboxdrv.sys and rebooting.

During reboot - several attempts - boot stops with ifx checking and cleaning ini files.

I REM'd the ifx line as I do not hink that is the problem and rebooted. Boot now stops displaying pmshell.exe as the last line on screen.

It seems something in ArcaOS does not like vboxdrv.sys...

I tried updating acpi to 3.23.07 with no change, boot stops as before.


I have not really used either of my eCS installations since installing ArcaOS but decided to try booting eCS2.1 with various ArcaOS Driver Pack updates. Boot stops with a SYS1201: vboxdrv.sys not installed.

The same problem with eCS2.2b2 - which surprised me as ecS2.2b2 is the system that was in use when I first installed and used VirtualBox successfully.

Both eCS installations are using acpi 3.23.05 and os2krnl 14_106 SMP

Checking my backups I see that when I first installed and used VirtualBox in eCS2.2b2 I was using acpi 3.23.03. I had updated acpi to 3.23.05 in my eCS2.2b2 installation shortly before installing and concentrating on ArcaOS and suspect that I never tried running VirtualBox after the acpi update.

Here I must admit to being a little "naughty" and installing the 14_201 SMP kernel and acpi 3.23.06 in eCS2.2b2 to test whether that would make a difference ; Would eCS2.2b2 boot past the ifx/pmshell boot stop that ArcaOS has?

The answer is that eCS2.2b2 boots to a working Desktop without problems with those files installed. It cannot run VirtualBox though and delivers this error message

   Failed to create the VirtualBoxClient COM object.
 
   The application will now terminate.


   Callee RC: NS_ERROR_ABORT (0x80004004)


This error happens with the vboxdrv.sys supplied in r141 and the later version from ftp://osfree.org/upload/vbox/vboxdrv.zip

Interesting that eCS2.2b2 can boot to a working Desktop using those "naughty" updates though where ArcaOS cannot.


Does anyone have VirtualBox running OK with ArcaOS?

Any thoughts on the above problems, anyone?

Hardware / Not a graphics card failure - but what happened?

Hi All

That was weird... and I think I need to document it somewhere.

I had been using ArcaOS5.0.0 for a couple of hours when my son phoned and asked if I could put a bootable usb stick together with clonezilla - http://www.clonezilla.org/ - on it. I downloaded tuxboot for windows (no, no os/2 version) - https://tuxboot.org/ -  as that looked to be the easiest way to create the required bootable usb stick, booted into windows7 and soon had the "bootable clonezilla" usb stick prepared and tested.

I then booted back into ArcaOS without any problems.

My son turned up about 3 hours later to collect the usb stick and asked if it was possible to create a bootable usb stick to install windowsxp from. I rebooted from ArcaOS into windows7 and we then downloaded and installed various software to help in the process and finally found something called Rufus - https://rufus.akeo.ie/ - that did the job.

Having finished preparing usb sticks for son I rebooted into ArcaOS. Then son asked if he could have a copy of the windowsxp cd. I used the DVDTools Burn Disc Image to perform the copy. All went well until the cd had completed. The disc draw opened to eject the completed cd - and the system hung, no reaction to mouse or keyboard, clock stopped, no cpu movement.

I pressed the Reset button and rebooted ArcaOS but boot stopped shortly after ifx had slowly run - took a couple of minutes rather than the usual few seconds - and the system gave up trying to boot with pmshell.exe being the last line on screen and all disk activity having stopped. I left it for about 10 minutes with no change, Ctrl-Alt-Del did not work so I pressed the Reset button to reboot. ArcaOS gave up booting at the same point as previously.

I then tried booting eCS2.2b2 which stopped booting at the same place as ArcaOS ie with pmshell.exe being the last line onscreen; dmt (earlier version of ifx) had run slowly as well.

I also have eCS2.1 installed on this computer so tried that with identical results.

Windows7 still boots and runs fine of course - at least that proves it is not hardware failure.

After a phone call to a mate who works in system support I turned power off to the pc and removed the graphics card. I reinserted the graphics card around an hour later.

No change to any of the above: no OS/2 based system gets further then the pmshell.exe line, windows7 boots and runs fine.

I then tried booting from ArcaOS install dvd and thought that was not going to get to the graphical installer window - boot had been going fine but almost stopped when switching from text to graphic mode, took a couple of minutes.

Seems there is something not quite right with ArcaOS/eCS (snap)graphics drivers and my card - but they have been working reasonably well together - for a couple of years in the case of the eCS installations - and, as windows7 boots without problems and no nasty graphics glitches, I am sure the hardware is not at fault.

I booted ArcaOS to a command line using Alt-F1, F2 and had a look at size of ini files including the ifx backups which all looked about right.

I then thought it might be worth rebooting and using ALT-F1, F3 to reset graphics to VGA. That seemed to go fine - although I seem to recall last time I had to resort to this many years ago the system immediately rebooted following vga driver install which this install had not - but again boot stopped with pmshell.exe the last line on screen.

I rebooted ArcaOS to a command line using Alt-F1, F2. I entered pmshell at the command prompt and the Desktop started but the mouse was extremely jerky - a little movement went a very long way. However, I managed to open the config.sys file for a quick check and could not spot anything wrong.

Being aware that using ALT-F1, F2 uses a different config.sys file -  \os2\boot\config.x - I was not surprised that this desktop was using snap rather than the vga drivers that had been installed using ALT-F1, F3

Well, at least we know graphical mode is possible so I rebooted the system - took a minute or 2 to get the jerky mouse into the correct clicking place - and tried booting ArcaOS in the hope that the problem had now "gone away". Boot stopped with a message about not being able to find sddhelp.sys file. That suggests to me that switching to vga from the ALT-F1 screen does not work in ArcaOS5.0.0 as the snap file sddhelp.sys should not be needed by the vga driver. The interesting bit was that we had gone further than the pmshell.exe line...

Out of interest I booted eCS2.2b2 which booted to a working Desktop with no problem now.

No problem booting eCS2.1 now either...

As the snap files were still in place I edited the ArcaOS config.sys and reinstated a couple of missing snap related lines - probably removed during the failed (?) vga install - then rebooted into ArcaOS. No problem booting to a working Desktop. As a precaution I reinstalled snap from the ArcaOS install dvd and rebooted without any problems.

OK, I have battered my head trying to work out what happended: For some reason all 3 of my os/2 based systems installed in this computer failed to boot at the point when switching from text to graphical display - and the ArcaOS install dvd also had problems at this point and that uses Panarama so not just a Snap problem. Being able to boot and run windows7 indicates that it was not a hardware failure.

The "cure" seems to have been booting ArcaOS to a command line using the \os2\boot\config.x file and starting pmshell from the prompt although I totally fail to understand how this could be a "cure"...

The question is: What was the problem?

I think the hang at the end of cd burning is probably involved but I have used the Burn Disc Image app several times previously without any problems and there have not been any hardware or driver changes since last use around 2 weeks ago.

I suspect something windows related, possibly buggy software/undetected malware installed when creating usb stick for son but not sure how this would cause graphics problems in OS/2 based systems.

Any thoughts on this anyone? - I would just like to understand what happened.

Setup & Installation / ArcaOS: Impossible to install!

After all the fun I had getting ArcaOS installed and working on a laptop I thought installing it to a fairly standard amd x64 4 core with 4 Gb RAM would be a breeze.

I thought wrong.

Sadly the OS2AHCI.ADD driver included with ArcaOS fails to "see" the hard disks attached to the SATA ports. Here is the output of copy os2ahci$ captured to file:-

Setup & Installation / Removing ArcaOS installed cups packages?

Hi All

Any ideas on how to get rid of an unwanted cups/ghostscript/gutenprint installation without reinstalling ArcaOS?

I had hoped that they would be displayed in ANPM and easily removed but that is not the case, only gnu-ghostscript is listed as installed with no mention of cups or gutenprint.

Applications / configuring the rpm release of cups

Hi All

Thought I'd give the rpm version of cups a try so installed the ANPM, fired it up and took a guess that the package simply called cups would get everything downloaded and installed.

Well, that was successful - ANPM tells me everything got downloaded and installed. I then rebooted for libpath changes to take effect.

Now, how do I go about configuring cups?

I started the cupsd.exe as a detached process and fired up Seamonkey - except Seamonkey would not start. As Seamonkey was running fine prior to installing the cups files I can only guess that a file installed as part of the cups installation does not work with Seamonkey version 2.35a2. I updated Seamonkey to version 2.35b7 which made no difference. Interestingly pmdll reckoned both versions of Seamonkey worked fine...

Having compared this system with my main system where Seamonkey 2.35b7 works fine I installed the current pango100.dll  and now have a working Seamonkey on that system.

I pointed Seamonkey to http://localhost:631/ which results in a "Failed to connect. The connection was refused ... Though the site seems valid the browser was unable to establish a connection"

Does the rpm version of cups not have a working browser interface?

As it seems ages since I last configured a cups printer using the command line I thought I'd refresh my memory by having a read of the docs starting with /usr/share/doc/cups/index.html however it seems that the section I need called Adding printers and classes is not among the files installed as Seamonkey gives a ".../usr/share/doc/cups/admin cannot be found".

Someone said that using yum/rpm to install software would be easier? Maybe I am simply missing something, somewhere...

Applications / OpenOffice 4.1.3 Draw problem

Hi All

Before posting a bug report I thought I'd ask if anyone else sees the same problem when using AOO4.1.3 Draw.

The problem is that any attempt to resize lines/boxes of any sort using the mouse results in an instant crash.

Is this just my systems - all 4 - that this happens on?

Applications / XWorkplace - Change Restart Desktop setting?

Is there any way of setting the XWorkplace Restart Desktop option of Process all XWorkplace Startup folders to default to Unchecked?

Reason: I *never* want to Process all XWorkplace Startup folders when performing a Desktop Restart as 1 of the XWorkplace Startup folders should only run after a Reboot.

Applications / cups and usb printers

Hi All

With my Canon wireless printer awaiting a new print head I have had to resort to attaching an Epson rx585 usb connected printer for the moment.

Sounds OK - except for the fact that cups cannot "see" the printer so I cannot set it up.

I opened a cmd window and tried running \cups\lib\cups\backend\usb.exe. Result:-

That seems to prove that cups cannot "see" the usb connected printer.

I believe I have all necessary files in place - cups works as well as it can with my wireless printer.

I added libusb10.dll - on the libpath - to my system before trying to setup the usb connected printer.

I do note that there seems to be a specific build of usbcalls.dll on the ecups wiki HowTo page that is older than the currently installed build which comes from the Arca noae usb driver update package USB-11.14.exe

I installed the older usbcalls.dll and usbresmg.sys pair of files from that package and see this result:-

Looks like there is a problem with current usbcalls.dll/usbresmg.sys releases and cups interoperability as the older pair produce the above output which looks like it could be right.

I retried the cups admin interface "Add Printer" and the Epson is identified immediately now.

Sadly printing a test page fails.
Job 1 has the usual "not a PDF file" error and gets Cancelled.
Job 2 fails with "Unable to send data to printer".
Looks like something else is screwed up... but I have no idea what.

Storage / Possible causes of TRAP000e in OS2LVM?

Hi All

Having shutdown a system that had been running fine, no reported problems and xWP shutdown seemed to work fine, I was somewhat surprised the next morning when the system failed to boot with this problem

Exception in module OS2LVM
TRAP000e


I have 2 other eCS installations on the same system and both of those fail to boot with the same problem.

I tried booting from the eCS2.2beta2 install dvd. That does not quite succeed; the system reboots when the graphical part of the install should start. I suspect the problem could well be the OS2LVM TRAP000e as with the problem disk disconnected the eCS install dvd boots fine.


Any thoughts on this problem - and how to resolve it? Possible loss of partition LVM info?

I could post an image of the TRAP screen if required.

Setup & Installation / Problems with JFS

Hi All

This started as a side discussion to http://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php?topic=1026

A brief recap: After installing JFS-1.09.06 from Arca Noae my system can "lose" a volume at boot. The first time this happened I only noticed after the Desktop had loaded and I opened the Drives folder to use the "missing" drive.

Running LVM it looked as the the volume had not yet been added to the drives available list as it was not in column with the other drives but off to the left - as though the volume had only just been created.

I made absolutely NO changes in LVM but used the Save and Exit option when quitting.

The "missing" drive appeared in the Drives folder.

This is something that happened frequently while I had this release of JFS installed - but not with previous builds ie 1.09.05 and earlier.

It happens on 2 AMD based desktop systems and 2 Intel based laptops.

I am assured there is nothing wrong with the driver... Strange that it happens across a range of hardware though.

A suggestion was put forward that it could be some sort of shutdown problem; possibly the disk cache is not being fully flushed before the system powers off or reboots.

Yet again, not a problem prior to JFS-1.09.06

I was encouraged to install the latest XWP beta as that has some updates which may help and retest the JFS-1.09.06 driver. The XWP beta does not make any difference - does not seem to be anything wrong with the XWP beta, works smoothly and is here if interested  ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/wlan/xwp-3.unofficial-1-0-10.zip

What can I be doing wrong on my range of hardware?

All systems have eCS2.2beta2 installed; the desktops also have eCS2.1+ with updates from eCS2.2beta2 plus Arca Noae.

Prior to installing JFS-1.09.06 I run chkdsk against all drives and check that they report "clean".

I then install the JFS package and reboot.

I had not performed this next step before yesterday when I reinstalled JFS-1.09.06 for testing with the XWP beta: When the Desktop has loaded and the system has "settled down" I ran chkdsk aginst all the JFS formatted volumes that were *known* to be clean immediately before the JFS package was installed.

Several of the volumes reported this problem:-

CHKDSK  Incorrect data detected in disk allocation structures.
CHKDSK  Incorrect data detected in disk allocation control structures.
.
.
.
CHKDSK  File system is dirty.
CHKDSK  File system is dirty but is marked clean.  In its present state, the
results of accessing i: (except by this utility) are undefined.


Strange... why should these drives be "dirty but is marked clean"? I guess that is where the shutdown possibility occurs - and could be the cause of the "lost" volume at boot.

I ran chkdsk against the drives with problems and found that chkdsk did not want to play with 1 of my drives something like "Cannot open for write access. Performing readonly check" or something very similar. What???  That sounds serious but, usually, is not if JFS-1.09.06 is installed - it means that it needs a different JFS package that works.

I had installed the JFS-1.09.06 package to my eCS2.1+ system; on the same system I have a bootableJFS eCS2.2beta2 installation and another eCS2.2beta installation on a HPFS formatted volume; the HPFS installation still has the earlier JFS-1.09.05 package installed and has this line in the config.sys file:-

IFS=M:\OS2\JFS.IFS /LW:5,20,4 /AUTOCHECK:+*


Yes, the HPFS install exists mainly to perform a full forced chkdsk during boot when JFS-1.09.06 stuffs up.
(A side note here: For those who do not know the above config.sys line does not work with JFS-1.09.06 as support for the "+" option has been dropped. My suggestion: Do *not* use JFS-1.09.06 on a "headless" server.)

The volume that JFS-1.09.06 could not chkdsk was processed by chkdsk/JFS-1.09.05 without problems, applications installed on that volume worked fine.

After a reboot back to the eCS2.1+ install chkdsk again reported several volumes as "dirty but is marked clean" - yet again, possibly a shutdown problem...

This time chkdsk was able to process all volumes without any problems.

When I next performed a chkdsk - probably around 3 hours later just before shutdown for the night - guess what I discovered? Yes, several volumes "dirty but is marked clean".

The system had not been shutdown between the earlier chkdsk that "fixed"? whatever problems and this chkdsk. That seems to rule out shutdown as a problem and leave JFS-1.09.06 as the culprit - unless anyone can come up with any other possibilities?

I guess any of the applications I used or the data I saved may have caused the problem - but, the problem does not seem to exist with JFS-1.09.05...


Any thoughts?
