Storage / Re: JFS Error during boot
« on: June 09, 2013, 09:50:56 pm »
Hi Eirik

Sorry to mention it but your kernel is now not the most recent  :-)

eCS2.2 Beta comes with this kernel:-

[H:\]bldlevel os2krnl
Build Level Display Facility Version 6.12.675 Sep 25 2001
(C) Copyright IBM Corporation 1993-2001
Signature:       @#IBM:14.106#@_SMP  IBM OS/2 Kernel
Vendor:          IBM
Revision:        14.106
File Version:    14.106
Description:     _SMP  IBM OS/2 Kernel

Seems to work fine with BootableJFS - and no other obvious problems here.

Hardware / Re: Hi IRQ SCSI adapter
« on: June 03, 2013, 03:23:30 pm »
Hi David

In short: No.

You may want to have a look through the ecs ngs though just in case there is anything more useful than the thread  SCSI card that works with SMP and ACPI? in ecomstation.support.hardware.

Probably the only useful bit of advice I can give is to use the /VW switch to prevent ACPI setting high IRQs.

General Discussion / Re: Hobbes directory structure re-organization
« on: May 31, 2013, 04:33:01 pm »
Hi Guys

Probably the most useful change would be getting hobbes internal linking to work.

The classic example is the link Return to homepage at the bottom of each webpage which does *not* return to homepage - http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/ - but instead reloads whatever page you are currently viewing. Some example urls that have this problem (it is the same problem on every page on the website I've visited):-

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-browse.php?dir=/pub/os2
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-browse.php?dir=/pub/os2/games
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-browse.php?dir=/pub/incoming&sort=date

Martins structure looks OK to me - but I claim no expertise in these matters.

Applications / Re: Java Applications

Hi Martin

I thought I'd have a look at this and had a look for a package without an installer.

I did not find 1 so sent an email asking about a version without an installer. I have a reply:-

Hi Pete,

There is a zip on joeffice.net (http://www.joeffice.net/joeffice.zip) but
Joeffice requires java 7.

Regards,
Anthony

So,  java7 is required - which probably explains why it is not installing for you.

Hi martin

The only description I have seen of this was the subject heading in newsgroup comp.os..os2.misc - WPS class replacement for OS/2 Hardware-Manager.

As to how to add the description to xWP: I think it is shown clearly in the image :-)

I do not think it is possible to add the description yourself - but I could be wrong.

Hi Roderick

You kind of send the same email to the supportteam address as requested. Thanks for that.
 I wrote this reply:

>Booting from \"Menu with own values\" results in system hang when \"Creating objects\"

Oke lets try and pin point the problem.  You made any changes in the
preboot menu ?

What happens if you disable ACPI ?  Did you have a ticket open on
svn.netlabs.org for ACPI and a Gateway system with ACPI or I'm mixing
you up with somebody else ?

>Booting with \"Default values\" results in USB Trackball not working when Desktop loaded.
>
>Overall, this needs a lot more work.

If you did not modify in the preboot menu (boot with own values) and
boot with default value's is the same (in effect). It could rather be
pointing at something else as in a random problem that is somehow
occurring.

What happens with the demo CD if you take out the USB mouse and reconnect it ?
It would help if you could open a ticket in the eComStation bugtracker so we can try and trace and solve this bug.
But having stuff discussed in forums and emails makes it hard to track for developers.

I set the following in the preboot Menu:-
Language to en_UK
Keyboard to en_UK
Video to SNAP
Changed AHCI driver to Danis506
Removed USB Keyboard support
Set USB Floppy support to 0

ACPI should work... It is possible that I enabled multiple CPU support. I will have to retest with only 1 CPU active.

No, I don't have a Gateway system  :-)

I had problems with the USB drivers supplied with eCS 2.2 Beta that look very similar to the problem with the LiveCD - ie the USB Trackball does not work with the supplied USB drivers but does work with the IBM 10.162 drivers.

I thought I had opened a ticket about the USB problem on the eCS Bugtracker but cannot find it... I do know that at the time I installed eCS 2.2 Beta I was using a *wired* USB Trackball. I seem to recall having a bit of a problem with the eCS Bugtracker around that time so maybe I did not report the USB problems. They do get briefly discussed in the eComStation 2.2 Beta First Impressions thread - on Page 6.

I'll have to do a little more testing and then file Bug reports about the USB problems.

Hi All

I'm not very impressed with the Demo CD myself.

When I boot from "Menu with own values" the system hangs on "Creating objects"

When I boot with the "Default values" my USB Trackball does not work - not sure about any other usb devices as I could not be bothered to try and keyboard my way around the Desktop testing things.

At least I now know there has been no improvement of USB mouse related drivers since the release of eCS2.2 Beta...

Ah, well. Guess we can look forward to the next Live CD and hope it is much improved.

Hi Melf

I bumped into a few Flashblock problems with the current Seamonkey (2.7.2.12) and posters in the mozilla ng suggested using NoScript instead - http://noscript.net/ - which works pretty well.

Games / Re: Running MGL Doom on Warp 4
« on: May 02, 2013, 01:01:02 pm »
Hi Scott

What graphics card is involved? - it would have to be pretty ancient to not have double buffering capability but it looks like SNAP is not finding that capability on the graphics card.

FYI: mglDoom has been running fine here for years; Warp4.50 on (currently eCS2.2), various SNAP builds (currently 3.1.8), usually ATI graphics cards (recent cards include X300, X800; current card X550) although I seem to recall using several nVidia cards around about Warp4.50 time.

SNAP does include some tools to report and change current settings which may be of help - see the SNAP.PDF file in the \SNAP directory or SNAP desktop folder. I suggest that you use the following command from the \SNAP directory to see what the current configuration is:-

gaoption show > current_options.txt

Check that "Hardware acceleration.... Full" is included in the results.

You may also want to check the results of the following command

gaoption show accel > accel.txt

With my ATI X550 all options are On and Hardware acceleration is Full

If all graphics card settings seem OK then you may have a missing/wrong build support file somewhere...
I guess PMDLL - as mentioned by Dave - is the best tool to discover that. you could also try starting mgldoom from the command line just to see if any errors get reported there.

Hi Scott

Maybe you want to update to SNAP - http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/drivers/video/snap-os2-3.1.8.zip (includes Serial Number) - to see if that helps.

Hi Sigurd

With regard to slowing boot down - not something most of us want to do  ;-)  - I think you may want to try BootDly.SYS

This driver is definitely supplied with eCS2.1 and 2.2 but I'm not sure if it is included in earlier eCS versions. If you have either eCS2.1/2.2 you should find BootDly.SYS in \os2\boot and docs in \ecs\DOC\BOOTDLY

Hi Doug

I think I've found the cause of my usb "mouse" problem: USB Legacy support was Enabled in the mainboard BIOS.
Changing that to Disabled has resulted in no problems when booting using the IBM 10.162 builds of usbd.sys, usbhid.sys, usbehcd.sys and usbohcd.sys and the mouse has been active when the Desktop has loaded.

Lars 10.186 builds do not like my wireless trackball as they cause boot to stop until the usb receiver is removed from the usb port.

I've yet to retest the usb drivers supplied with eCS 2.2 beta

I've also discovered the cause of the slooow boot time I've been experiencing with eCS2.2 beta: BASEDEV=OS2AHCI.ADD /Q
Putting REM in front of that line has improved matters greatly - about the same boot time as my eCS 2.1 installation.

Hi Doug

Throwing in "unusual" devices, like a trackball, doesn't help.

I would not consider a trackball an "unusual" device; it is nothing more than an upside down mouse  ;-)

Yes, lets see if the next 2.2 beta - if there is 1 - resolves the issues people have reported.

Hi Doug

I tried to resolve the usb issues I'm seeing by deleting USBOHCD.SYS and USBEHCD.SYS then installing the files from the 10.186 build by Lars Erdmann

Rebooted  to a working Desktop with Mouse "active"

I hoped the above had cured the problem but find it has not - 2 of 5 boots have resulted in no mouse "active" when the Desktop has loaded.

I then tried replacing USBD.SYS and USBHID.SYS with the IBM 10.162 builds

Rebooted with no problems, mouse works.

A few reboots later - and no changes to config.sys file - I find boot stopping after loading the genmac marvbell 88e8056 driver.

This is about the time that the usbmouse.sys driver should load...

I tried turning off my Logitech M570 Trackball - just purchased to replace my ancient wired Microsoft Trackball - and then turning it on. No difference...

I pulled the wireless receiver from the USB socket - Boot continued; I reinserted the wireless receiver and the mouse worked fine when the Desktop had loaded. Interesting... I suspect the USB drivers are not even "seeing" the attached mouse until the wireless receiver is reinserted. But, Why not?

This combination of Lars Erdmanns controller drivers build 10.186 and IBMs 10.162 USBD.SYS and USBHID.SYS works fine on this hardware when booting from my eCS2.1 volume. This seems to indicate the problem is not just related to USB drivers.

Hi Roderick

Would the USB drivers be responsible for what seems a slow boot time here? - or is the new kernel involved?

The eCS logo is onscreen for a long time compared with eCS2.1 and total boot time is double eCS2.1 (Time in Minutes:Seconds):-

Boot logo on screen      Boot time total

eCS 2.1                00:07                               00:45

eCS 2.2 beta       00:55            01:35

Anyone else seeing longer-than-eCS2.1/eCS2.0 boot times?

I'm seeing the occasional problem of the system boots to a working Desktop but the USB mouse is totally unresponsive, the pointer on screen does not move and neither button works. The last time this happened I experimented with pulling out the usb mouse lead then plugging it back in. Hey, Presto! - a working mouse. However, this is not a good "workaround" as it involves crawling under a desk to get at the usb mouse lead.

The above is not a problem that I have seen when using Lars Erdmanns USB Controller drivers build 10.186 with IBMs USBD.SYS 10.162

Pete
