Title: CUPS v2.0.3 Discussion (Slipt)
Post by: Paul Smedley on July 24, 2015, 11:58:27 am
Hi Pete,

While a brief presentation about 1.4.8 would be of interest I think Paul should concentrate more on 2.0.0 as that is the way forward - I see cups 2.0.3 is now current.

No, Paul, that is not a hint - but if you are feeling bored sometime... ;-)

Yes the focus will be the current port. since you mentioned it, http://smedley.id.au/tmp/cups-2.0.3-os2-20150724.zip - only tested enough to see that a test print works.

Be mindful when extracting over a working setup, there is a file in here that conflicts with one from cups-filters* - I had to re-unzip cups-filters* after installing this (was too lazy to work out which file, and anyway, it's probably due to me not testing in real hardware and not having SMP)

Hi Paul

Found a little time to briefly test v2.0.3

I found the problem you experienced and it seems to be caused by the cups v2.0.3 build of \cups\share\cups\data\testprint - or some code in cups that interprets that file - as using the cups v2.0.0 build of testprint works fine.  I'll email you with some detail later.

Have not used v2.0.3 enough to find any other bugs so far - will let you know if/when I do  :-)

I guess we ought to "unhijack" this discussion.

Apologies to all for going off topic.

Regards

Pete

Martin seems to have the capability to fork discussions under new topics. Be nice if everyone had that capability. In the absense of us doing it, perhaps Martin can take requests.

Thanks Paul for all your work. I have a deskjet 2510 all-in-one (passed on to me rather than specifically chosen.) With cups-2.0.0-os2-20141019, cups-filters-1.0.61-os2-20141026 and hplip-3_12_10a I could print the test page from the web interface, and ps and pdf files using cupslpr. Printing from lucide also worked.

I've now installed cups-2.0.3-os2-20150728, cups-filters-1.0.71-os2-20150725 and hplip-3.15.11-os2-20151121, and imported the 3.15.11 ppd into psprint. The test page prints from the web interface ok.Command line printing of ps and pdf files works after installing bc-1.06. I used the cups wizard to set up a printer object. I can't get printing from lucide to work, and printing from OpenOffice fails with
"Can't detect file type"
prnt/hpcups/HPCupsFilter.cpp 588: cupsRasterOpen failed, fd = 0
PID 3405 (/cups/lib/cups/filter/gstoraster.exe) stopped with status 1.
Any thoughts on this?

BTW - as my usr tree isn't on my boot drive (where cups currently is) it's much appreciated that the OS/2 path is now appended to the path set by cups. Thanks :)

Hi Pete2

I seem to recall problems when updating cupsv2.0 by unzipping slightly later builds over the existing installation as some cups files were ReadOnly and did not get updated.

That caused similar problems to what you are seeing.

You could use the command DIR * /A:R /S to get a listing of any ReadOnly files in the cups directory tree to see if that is the problem .

if you do get a listing it is a problem that you will need to sort out using this command ATTRIB -R * /S

Note both above commands should be entered in a command window open in \cups.

Then unzip cups v2.03 over the cups installation followed by the cups filters and hplip packages.

Hope the above helps

Pete

Update - Today, having changed nothing as far as I am aware, I can print from Lucide, qpdfview, PMview, Firefox and OpenOffice. So it now looks like printing is working fully on the deskjet 2510.

NB I've been following the discussion here, so I deleted all of the 2.0 installation before installing 2.03, and removed all read-only attributes. Next thing is scanning...

Hi

I will really like to invite you guys to write some articles about this subject. You can use the Os2World Wiki (http://www.os2world.com/wiki) with the same user name and password from this forum.  I think it is important to document the knowledge of using CUPS on OS2-eCS, no matter if it is an specific case with a specific hardware.

Glad to hear. Sorry for the delay in responding, things have been busy here :/

Cheers,
