Title: CPU requirements for the new otter browser.
Post by: David Kiley on January 29, 2021, 10:28:35 am
Regarding this update about the otter browser currently being beta tested:
https://www.os2world.com/cms/index.php/past-news/80-news/software/22907-new-web-browser-for-arcaos-ecs-and-os-2 (https://www.os2world.com/cms/index.php/past-news/80-news/software/22907-new-web-browser-for-arcaos-ecs-and-os-2)

It mentions it probably won't function on a pentium 4 - and would benefit from a dual core.
I curently run ArcaOS on a dual core Pentium Xeon E3110:
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/34694/intel-xeon-processor-e3110-6m-cache-3-00-ghz-1333-mhz-fsb.html (https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/34694/intel-xeon-processor-e3110-6m-cache-3-00-ghz-1333-mhz-fsb.html)

Does it seem like that should have enough power?
Thanks!

Memory might be the most important with perhaps a 2GB requirement just guessing. You'll have to test, it's how we basically figured out the minimum requirements for Mozilla and there are people running Mozilla carefully on PII's.
I'd also guess that if they get it running in multi-process mode, there will be a switch or such (the Simple Browser seems to use an environment variable) to put it in single process mode which should require less CPU.
Is there a C2D Xeon that would plug into that board? Old Xeon's are fairly cheap and at one point I had a Pentium 4D at 2.8Ghz, swapped in a 1.86GHz C2D and got a performance boost as well as using half the power. Later I swapped in a C2D extreme at 2.8Ghz and it flew.

I voiced that opinion in the BWW/OS/2 VOICE virtual Warpstock 2020 presentation. The browser will function, the question is how comfortable it will work on a Pentium 4. I think the user experience will be pretty louzy....

But the current system requirements are not only needed for the browser itself. Websites are also getting bigger, bigger and bigger. With very complex websites elements being send to the web browser to render. Requiring a lot of computing power.

The current cpu I have is a dual core at 3ghz (Xeon E3110).. so it probably will be ok for now.
I looked up the motherboard cpu support list and apparently my board can take a C2D 4 core cpu - so perhaps I will upgrade to that at some point when i'm ready for a new project. I'm assuming another 2 cores would help a lot.
I was mostly just curious about the pentium 4 question.. as I previously used to have a pentium 4 machine.
Amazing that people are still using PII's ::)

OK, you should be fine with that CPU, at that, upgrading to a quad core C2D won't get you much according to http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E3110-vs-Intel-Core2-Quad-Q6600 (http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E3110-vs-Intel-Core2-Quad-Q6600).
