Applications / Re: Firefox 38.2.1
« on: April 27, 2016, 02:59:03 pm »
Had some time today for further testing. So I tried to download some files and again it went full automatically down after three big files. So no improvement here. I downloaded
bluej-315.jar                      │ 7.081.351
bluej-ecs.zip                      │     9.208
bluej-ref-manual.pdf               │   768.751
drjava-stable-20140826-r5761-j.zip│ 7.193.111

The next "big" file was drjava-stable-20140826-r5761.jar   │12.928.003  and bye bye, FF crashes fast. It doesn't write trap file :-(. It doesn't write anything in popup.log :-(.

Got this in Firefox!.log;
DIVE forced on by MOZ_ACCELERATED=1 - pointer will be hidden
Changing DIVE from enabled to disabled - 'layers.acceleration.disabled' is TRUE

FIREFOX.EXE:
Abnormal program termination
RWSCLI08: RwsExitListProc - termination code= 0

FIREFOX.EXE:
Abnormal program termination

What I can learn from that file that there is a DIVE problem, an PrivateBrowsing problem with a program line number.
And that I had an abnormal program termination, yup, did saw that. Still think that it has to do with some kind of filesize or buffersize, but on the other hand if such happens you expect an error message like buffer overflow or similar. And I didn't see that kind of messages.

Too bad I can't get more information to iron out this "bug" and I haven't a glue where to look for.

Setup & Installation / Re: Java installation
« on: April 27, 2016, 12:44:47 pm »
I have it done somewhat different because I also test Java programs and sometimes you have to go up or down in versions to get it work, but with latest version of Java 6 this is minimum.

You can read what I've done with added a different approch;

http://joopn.home.xs4all.nl/os2ecs/ecs6eJ.htm

With the setup I use I can use any combination of Java with Odin versions without booting or updating of config.sys.

Setup & Installation / Re: Improve installer of OS/2
« on: March 19, 2016, 06:45:38 pm »
Current state: the user should configure system (several steps) then several old IBM OS/2 Warp installers are executed. New eComStation components are installer.
Its still a distribution which has protected components and which may not be altered. So delivery IBM Warp 4.52 (as far as I know its latest) has to be done in the way it came from IBM.

INSTALL-001: The preparation of volumes requires many efforts.
CHANGE TO: Default: remove all partitions, create 1. The user should confirm. Without call of miniLVM utility.
One more time: Scheme: Fast installation
Implement scheme: Fast installation. The user select hard drive. eCS installer formats it, automatically creates 1 volume. Starts installation.
I don't agree here. Its very wise to do an in depth format. Its about the only time you do this and after this round your sure that your HD does not have any defects. Don't go the Windows way, dump it on disk and hope for the best.

INSTALL-002: English language in standard version.
CHANGE TO: The installer should be multi-language. (we talk about eComStation Internation English)
I don't understand this, with someone else I did the translation for Dutch, so I believe the installer is multi-language, but it might be that there are no translators for your language.

    INSTALL-003: Installation from USB CD-ROM:
In current version you should modify preboot-menu to install from USB CD-ROM CHANGE TO: USB CD-ROM should be activated by default and Installation should be ready to process from USB CD-ROM.
Might be that in your country CD-ROM is always mounted through USB, but in other countries CD-ROM is a build in component. So if it is changed to what you want we certainly get complaints from other users why it is not set to whatever standard. I still have a CD-ROM for parallel port, may be we have to change it to that port  ;D.

    INSTALL-004: System information:
The user is blind, no information about computer at all. Which drivers to select?! CHANGE TO: a) Add SysInfo utility to Utilities. b) Show names and IDs of devices on the page with drivers selection (video adapter, disk controller, ..)
I want to add that most users also don't read the manual. Not from the installer, not from the motherboard, not from the monitor and so on.

Tried some youtube footage today, but its the same as with version 31.8.0b5, stutters and so on. Just stops playing when it has to load next frame. Not as smooth as with version 24.8.1b4 which loads total footage.

Okay, but is that version in which the problem is fixed available? I have a trap file, at the end an insane almost endless list of dll files which where accessible. If I did count correct 89.

« on: March 13, 2016, 07:36:20 pm »
As  bit of information, all the computers here have  VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT  set to 2048 and Regim runs quite happily with the CMD file I gave.
Don't want to start a war or so, I did wrote "may" and "might" because it greatly depends what drivers you have and if those drivers do give trouble with a high VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT setting. So a setting of 2048 might be perfectly all right for your system. Fyi, mine is also set at 2048. But I don't have JFS or HPFS386 as mentioned in the readme.os2 in the java directory.

The big difference between OS/2-eCS and other OS-systems is that we don't have a real maximum of memory which depends on the amount of physical RAM installed. Our physical RAM can be extended by using the swap file. What we can use depends on the virtual address limit set by OS/2 for the process. This is controlled by the VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT parameter in the CONFIG.SYS. Values higher than 1024 may cause problems with some drivers. So this might be the limit for Java in our OS. You can find this and more in the readme.os2 file in the Java distribution.

I have it running, but I'm not pleased. First started it in English for knowing that it just start without problems. After that switched it to Dutch, again what a pain. Its Dutch now. First thing I noticed is that the fonts used in the menu bar and so on are a little bigger. This will cost you real estate on the screen, so first homepage did appear with a slider on the right. More real estate gone. Not happy with that. Didn't find a way to adjust the font size for menu's and so on.
Tried my stored passwords. No. It will definite not read the password file in the right way. It sees that I have a password, have to give it, but the screen after that stays empty, no sites, no names, no passwords. Visited sites with password didn't show up a pop up for giving the password. This one is not working.
Not a big deal, I have to read my list of favorites now because the small pictures on the left are gone.
Real pain to get all as it was installed on my present 24.8.1. All extensions are not loaded, you have to activate them manually. In former versions there was a check if they were okay for use in that version, I didn't see it in 38.2.1. Didn't get a complain too, so I guess its okay. All in all, I'm not pleased the way FF is moving. I'm afraid I have to go this ride every time I install a new version of FF.

The program will run with this batchfile

@echo off
SET CLASSPATH=
SET BEGINLIBPATH=C:\JAVA160ga5\bin
SET PATH=C:\JAVA160ga5\bin
D:
cd D:\regim
set classpath=.\regim.jar;.\it.tidalwave.imageio.raw-1.6.1.jar
java -Duser.home=D:\regim -client -Xms64m -Xmx768m -Dit.tidalwave.imageio.raw.defaultSource=rawImage regim.Regim 2>regimbugs.txt

I have different drive letters and a subdirectory extra, but that doesn't alter the working. I do have only 1G in the machine, but the program wants probably more with some pictures. Be sure to put the last "set classpath"  on this spot, otherwise it wont direct to the right drive and subdirectory.

@Joop, the simple way is to use the files under /etc/fonts from the fontconfig package, put the fonts directory somewhere and use SET FONTCONFIG_PATH to point at it. This has the redirect for warpsans and also the pseudo directory OS2FONTDIR which will load all the fonts in the ini files.
Thanks Dave, I want to study the manual and I thought it was more difficult. Its easy the way you give it here.

You may want to finally try out Yum/RPM !
No way. If I wanted Linux I didn't run OS/2-eCS. But I don't like the Linux architecture, to predictable for bad things.

Note that Fontconfig has to be setup correctly otherwise the browser will crash.
Thanks for the info. I have downloaded and installed. Arcview is now showing rpm packages. Had already installed the right stuff. Browser is loading, no xull can't load. But the browser crashes on fontconfig, so how do I setup that program? Couldn't find a manual.

In the search for what's wrong I had to install arcview. Its now at level 2.2. But it still complaints with rpm packages. In the help it seems that I need CPIO.EXE, but that one isn't in the distribution of 7zip. Where can I find CPIO.EXE for OS/2-eCS?

I downloaded firefox-38.2.1.en-US.os2.zip and did read the readme file. Downloaded the needed files. Found that with fonts that the needed dll is not in the distribution. I get the message xul can't load. Probably it can't find the correct dll. Are there more users with same problems or found solutions?

Joop
