General Discussion / Re: eCoSoft software availability

I don't want make a political thread, but I do not understand the restrictions on us. Eugene and friends did not cause this situation. Supporting them will not affect the situation in Ukraine. Can someone who understands the sanctions post a simple statement of what we can and cannot do?

Applications / Re: VisualAge for C Modern Installer

It's been years since I have installed VAC here, but behind the GUI front end, isn't all this really just fed into a dynamically built CID?

Neil,
How did you end up building this CID?

I'm going to take a look through my original install CDs (as well as the DevCon CDs for this)...

You can look at my REXX code, but all I did was look at the Feature Install documentation. As I recall it took some experimentation to get it working.

After installation, I remove a lot of stuff from Config.Sys. I prefer having a cmd file for compiler environment to having the environment in config.sys.

Suntan Special installs VAC and other FI products using CID.
Hi Neil,
I still have an image of my CD (v0.5.2) and cannot see a directory with VAC scripts in it. In which version did you add that functionality ?

You can download the latest from my website and install your CD (or the file tree from the CD) VAC with it. It should also offer to install all the patches. With 0.5.2, I separated the development tools otherwise it wouldn't fit on a CD.

Multimedia / recommendation for KVM
« on: September 23, 2022, 06:04:11 pm »
KVM stands for “Keyboard, Video (monitor), Mouse.” The main function of a KVM switch is to control, switch between, and manage multiple PCs or servers via a single keyboard, monitor and mouse (also referred to as the 'console').

I also share audio. I use an analog VGA KVM today, but I'd like to upgrade to a digital 4K monitor. An HDMI KVM sounds attractive. Has anyone got one that they like?

Does HDMI audio work in uniaud?

If I remember this correctly, you need to install 0 instances of your current driver. So you need to know what your current driver is, and you have to have the installation files.

Suntan Special installs VAC and other FI products using CID. Netscape  is not required.

General Discussion / Re: ArcaOS 5.0.1
« on: September 18, 2022, 03:20:09 pm »
When you make a software release that is millions, a box release is no big deal. When you will sell a couple of dozen, a box is a few hundred dollars (each). I currently produce the media for Arca Noae and sell it on the Blonde Guy website. Please comment on this thread if you would be interested in a box release, and I'll crunch the numbers and see if it is possible.

Hardware / Re: Affordable Mini PCs

I'm using this tiny computer. I don't care about DOS and WinOS2, but full screen sessions work well. NVMe with M2 drive makes this pretty fast, and there is space for a SATA drive, too. Sound is slightly better than other brands.

You can run Suntan Special on a freshly installed eCS 1.1 and get a lot of missing pieces installed. I haven't tested against eCS 1.1 for years, so I suppose some stuff might be broken, but even so, it might be quicker than learning the details of each thing you wanted to install.

Multimedia / Re: XHCI and USB Audio perspectives

The USB audio driver worked with my XHCI only system a while ago in testing.

Recent advances in Uniaud made USB sound unnecessary on my systems.

I love this article. I want to remind readers about Lou Gertzner's book "Who Says Elephant Can't Dance" for another view of IBM's OS/2 project. In this book, Gertzner talks about the decision to end the OS/2 project.

Gertzner turned IBM around by making major changes. The change he is most proud of is the cancelling of OS/2. The decision seems to have been made before Warp 3 was released. This thread continues with remarks about marketing OS/2, but if OS/2 was already cancelled, it's understandable that the marketing to end users would not have a high priority.

Setup & Installation / Re: DOS/WIN Issues
« on: August 18, 2022, 06:42:16 pm »
This is normal for OS/2 on modern machines. BIOS is not correctly emulated.

viop.sys might help for DOS/Windows full screen. Not sure where to get it.

Waiting for ArcaOS 5.1 UEFI, where both DOS and Windows will be working full screen and in a window.

Depending on how old ArcaOS version, it might be worth installing the updates. Fixes to drivers seemed to help on some systems.

USBCOM.SYS needs to be the first Device in Config.Sys so that it gets first pick of the COM ports.

NETBIOS will grab some COM ports otherwise, leaving us at COM10, which won't work with the OS/2 Dialer.

When USBCOM.SYS is first in Config.Sys, it get COM1, which works well.

Hardware / Re: Displayport?
« on: August 07, 2022, 03:27:49 pm »
I have a machine with Display port. The difference in sharpness at 1920 x 1200 is striking compared to Display port through a good Startek DisplayPort to VGA adapter. I'm overdue for an upgrade. HDMI seems to be the best option, but the world seems to be moving to USBc for video.

Even the IBM drivers work with current PCI serial cards.

What would be nice is serial support to work with PCIe cards. An active developer could get it done.

USB serial support is pretty good, so we do not really lack for solutions.
