Internet / Re: SeaMonkey-2.42b8 and Thunderbird 45.8.0
« on: May 23, 2017, 03:56:23 pm »
I've installed and run both SeaMonkey and Thunderbird on a system that was already running Firefox 45. I did update nspr; I'm not sure that is needed.

Integration between Thunderbird and Firefox looks broken. Firefox 45 no longer uses Run!, but it appears to be required to make integration work.

Multimedia / Re: How to reinstall audio driver on Arcaos5
« on: May 22, 2017, 04:35:22 am »
This is how to remove an audio driver:

http://www.blondeguy.com/SoundCardEssay.html

I found this explanation of how to install a new sound card in OS/2, and it was the most elegant way I have seen. It assumes that you have a computer with working sound, or else a computer with MMOS2 installed, but no audio adapter.

This is a simple, safe way to uninstall your current sound card without having to do any selective install or delete the mmos2 subdirectory. I write OS/2 audio drivers and do this 8 or 9 times a day sometimes...

    Boot to an OS/2 full screen prompt.
    tedit the config.sys and delete or Rem-out the audio driver and it's vdd (if there is one.)
    tedit the mmos2\mmpm2.ini
    in the [Drivers] section delete the lines that begin with:

        "WaveAudio="
        "Sequencer="
        "Ampmix="

    every element listed in these lines will have an associated section further down in the ini and you can delete them also if you want, but it is not necessary for this to work. it merely avoids clutter in the ini file.
    reboot.
    install the audio drivers.

That's it, it will work every time and is much easier than selective uninstall and deleting the mmos2 subdirectory.

Internet / Re: iCloud access
« on: May 21, 2017, 04:12:46 pm »
The login and use of iCloud seems to work in Firefox 45. Apple is changing the logon process for June 15, so I'll report how that goes.

The reason I'm using iCloud in Firefox is that it makes most iPhone/iPad data available on OS/2.

Internet / Re: FF45.5 - choppy response/window scrolling anyone???

Overall the browser seems more responsive. It's pretty fast here. But I see that typing this reply is slow.

To me, window scrolling is improved for the first repaint, but slower for subsequent repaints.

« on: May 14, 2017, 08:19:36 pm »
I have installed this on my new laptop, and sound does work. For those who want to try.

1. If uniaud is installed, uninstall it. Use uninstal.exe from an older uniaud release to remove it. uninstal.exe is not in more recent releases. reboot.
2. install USB 10.217. reboot
3. install usbaudio and usbwav using minstall. reboot

At this point, sound worked for me. I'm using the Trond device https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA8583987106 I still see some drop outs, and lost frames/stopped video on YouTube. The sound is pretty good.

For the thread on the laptop, see http://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,1160.0.html

Setup & Installation / Re: Thinkpad T540p and eCS
« on: May 14, 2017, 08:14:22 pm »
The laptop is running under ArcaOS. The boot time messages were not accurately showing what was going on. The corrected parts are part of video support, and will be included with ArcaOS when it is released.

Sound does not work with UniAud, which is expected. I have sound working with USB Audio.

Applications / Re: Are you getting ready for ArcaOS?

It would seem to me that the statement "new kernel, that better supports upper shared memory, but it appears that that is still not perfect." is a real problem. This should have been the highest priority. What good is a fantastic installer when the system crashes at will. I have used OS/2 since 2.1 and have put up with that behavior for years. It was not bad until the latest crop of applications started needing high memory. Now, any extended use of those applications will cause system failure. Not a production OS for users. I have servers running with OS/2 with no problem as long as they do not push the use of high memory. That cannot continue if OS/2 wants to continue.

I'd want this too, but it can't really be done and also support existing OS/2 programs. It's also way, way, way beyond available resources. I haven't yet tried the new support, but if it solves normal usage scenarios, then I think its useful.

The new installer will be quite a bit short of fantastic, but if most people can install with it, I'm happy.

I'm thinking ArcaOS 5.1 will be the one to support OS/2 users in the long term. This release will prove that the lights are still on. Really, just having the current set of  features on one install DVD is pretty great.

As said in a previous reply, running ArcaOS in new laptops is pointless if wireless is not supported. At the same time to write drivers for every possible wireless card is too expensive.

Wouldn't it be better to write a driver for one or two popular USB wireless adapters, which everybody can use?

If you're offering to write one, then more power to you. Good luck!

If not, then why not use a WiFi bridge, which only requires Ethernet and a web browser?

As an Arca Noae reseller, I don't have more information than you about products and pricing.

But for video problems and ACPI problems, I will make this comment. It is very useful to developers if you go on to the Arca Noae website and make a good bug report. The bug reports you submit and follow up on make a kind of ToDo list for developers. There is no guaranty that the issue will be fixed, but it really helps your odds.

Also, if you have filled out a bug report, please post a link to it here.

 I am looking forward to try the results of your efforts.  I had good results with your 2.16 release,  but eventually I found stability bugs that made it difficult to live with.

If you can make a copy of cd1 on d: with the d drive having the same label as the cd, it should install ok.
