Setup & Installation / Re: eCS install problems on a recent mainboard
« on: September 30, 2016, 05:28:04 pm »
Hi All

@Mikkel

I'm running a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 mainboard which has an onboard Realtek RTL8168 using the current Arca Noae r8169.os2 driver which works fine. I have read somewhere, possibly within these forums, that success with the Realtek nics can depend on the Revision number; this nic is a 10ECh:8168h and is Revision 006 - only discovered by running the Windows Device Manager. I suspect the Revision number is related to some sort of change to the nic hardware.

It may be that I am lucky in that the nic shares IRQ10 with only 3 other devices.

@Doug

Prior to very recent releases of ACPI this mainboard actually required the /VW parameter on the acpi config.sys line to avoid hardware problems including the nic suddenly stopping working. The later versions of ACPI do not need the /VW parameter as the driver works out if the system needs to work in VW mode and switches to it if necessary - as with this mainboard. If I remember correctly VW mode limits the number of IRQs available to either equal to or less than the maximum number of IRQs that OS/2 can handle - I think I read somewhere that is 32. So, Yes, current ACPI drops back to VW mode if necessary.

Setup & Installation / Re: Thinkpad T540p and eCS

Hi

I recently had a similar problem where the LVM info had gone missing. I fixed the problem with DFSee - and Jans help.

What did you prepare the hard drive with?

There seem to be 2 versions of os2ahci.add - the build included with eCS2.2beta2 and the build available via an Arca Noae subscription. My system works fine with the eCS build but not with the Arca Noae build; other people find the opposite so you may want to test both builds.

I have also found some drivers do not work properly with older ACPI builds under some conditions - especially if the allocated IRQ is out of range. The cure seems to be to add /VW to the acpi line.

Seems to work as well as previous versions; still has the "[Error] libevent call with select failed: Bad address" problem though  :-(

Hi Jon

The dfsee files are all free to download, install and use - for a short period of time. If you need help sorting out a disk problem then you will need to Register as Support is not free. I can say that dfsee support is very good as he (Jan) recently helped me rescue a disk that others thought was dead.

I would not bother using Windows/linux based disk tools as most, if not all, simply do not work with OS/2 systems.

Applications / Re: Program object question
« on: August 19, 2016, 05:14:02 pm »
Hi adam

I think the answer is no.

I base my answer on the fact that any OS/2 apps that use an installer and create an application program object use the fields for specific purposes:-

Path and file name: the full path to the executable
Parameters: any parameters to pass to the executable
Working directory: the directory where the executable is found

Probably the only field that could use variable substitution is Parameters but then the app needs to understand what it is being given - applications seem to expect some switches and/or a [drive:\path\]filename. The other 2 fields seem fixed in that you are not likely to have an application that moves around your hard drives by itself.

I think variable substitution works on the cmd line. If I am right then a workaround, if needed, could be to create a cmd file to start the app and give the program object the cmd file details with the application icon and name.

I guess your definitive answer will be somewhere in the documents describing the design and implementation of OS/2 but I have no idea where to look...

Hi All

The answer seems to have been a failing power supply.

I noticed when running some DFSee tests from Windows that the same tests repeated later could take much longer than expected - Analyse disks should take about 2 hours for a 1Tb disk which is about the time it took for the first test; the second test started around 4 hours after the first test had completed showed an ETA of 22 hours - after running for 3 hours. Windows7, installed on a different disk, also got slower at accessing programs/data. Obviously something wrong...

As DFSee seemed to be able to work shortly after power on but struggled after the system had been on for a while I opened the system box for a clean out and noticed the psu vent grille looking very dusty so pulled out the psu for a thorough clean.

On opening the psu it was obvious that it had been overheating. Guess I could have given it a clean up and hoped that it would work but as the receipt dates it as purchased in October 2008 I decided to replace it.

With the new psu installed I still could not boot any of the 3 eCS systems installed.

Jan (DFSee) suggested setting the volume/partition type to something unknown and then trying to boot from the eCS2.2beta2 dvd. I booted Windows7 to change the OS/2 partition types...

I then booted from the eCS2.2beta2 dvd through to the Maintenance Console, opened a command line window and tried to use dir against several of the volumes. All reported "dirty filesystem".

After running chkdsk /f against all the volumes I booted from the eCS2.2beta installation on drive H: - rather pleased that it was not a failing hard drive as my backups were not as up to date as they should be.

My best guess is that things got a bit "mangled" during the last shutdown, possibly just before, due to a failing psu.

Hi roberto

I have seen that message a few times before. Maybe I have been lucky as each time I have rebooted and chkdsk has worked fine at the second attempt. I think I read somewhere that this error could be caused by chkdsk running out of memory space.

You could try booting from the eCS2.2b2 dvd to the Maintenance Console and running chkdsk. If that fails you may want to investigate the disk using DFSee.

Hi Dave

If the disk is dying then I hope it does it quickly - only a few more months warranty on it. However, this disk has been accused of dying previously, about 6 months ago, as that seems the quick answer to disk/file/filesystem problems so I doubt that is the case.

I am somewhat hopeful it is some missing LVM info - I seem to recall a similar trap years ago when I did not run vcu(?) against a drive with Warp4 installed before trying to use it with an LVM system.

As Jan (DFSee) is currently on holiday I am not expecting a quick response but will post outcome of attempted rescue in the, hopefully, near future.

I certainly hope it is not a dying disk as I bought 5 of these WD "Green" 1TB SATA3 drives at the same time...

Hi Martin

No idea.

Not being into the ANPM/yum/rpm scene I have not kept an eye on the cups version(s) that may be available from that source.

Is there not a readme somewhere in the package? - I guess installation instructions are not necessary though...

I would guess that installation within the "*nixy" directory structure would be the aim of the rpm releases though.

Hi ivan

I had not thought of checking RAM so followed your advice. The memtest result after 1:33:02 is Pass: 2, Errors: 0

I suspect that the problem is LVM info related. Of the 3 eCS installations on the disk 2 boot from HPFS formatted drives and have JFS-1.09.06 installed. These trap immediately after the kernel message is displayed, probably during loading OS2LVM.DMD. The other installation boots from a JFS-1.09.05 formatted drive and gets a little further; chkdsk for the 1st JFS volume starts before the trap appears.

Jan (DFSee) is having a look through the files generated by the DFSee "analyse disks" function so if it is LVM info related it should be "sortable" - hopefully. The question will then be: What caused the loss of LVM info?

Storage / Possible causes of TRAP000e in OS2LVM?
« on: June 21, 2016, 03:13:38 pm »
Hi All

Having shutdown a system that had been running fine, no reported problems and xWP shutdown seemed to work fine, I was somewhat surprised the next morning when the system failed to boot with this problem

Exception in module OS2LVM
TRAP000e

I have 2 other eCS installations on the same system and both of those fail to boot with the same problem.

I tried booting from the eCS2.2beta2 install dvd. That does not quite succeed; the system reboots when the graphical part of the install should start. I suspect the problem could well be the OS2LVM TRAP000e as with the problem disk disconnected the eCS install dvd boots fine.

Any thoughts on this problem - and how to resolve it? Possible loss of partition LVM info?

I could post an image of the TRAP screen if required.

Hi John

Possibly OS2BOOT - this is created by running

  SYSINSTX ?:

where ?: is the drive letter you want to be able to boot. If I remember correctly you need to be booted from a different drive, SYSINSTX cannot be used on the drive the system is booted from.

HI John

You may want to give BS_Info a try  http://wdsibyl.org/en/Downloads/display/lid/97   - lots of system information and can start some configuration programs.

Hi Andreas

Quote

That shows how it's wrong configured. TCPBEUI cannot have a logical adapter number of 0. Change the number in MPTS to 1 or another unused number and it will run.

It works fine with TCPBEUI logical adapter number of 0 here on several systems so the above is not the answer.

The LT00141 error is usually indicative of a tcpip misconfiguration.

Hi Joop

Thanks Dave, couldn't find a package for unrpming.

Use the Archive Viewer supplied with eCS - or the latest version http://www.altsan.org/programming/os2/#arcview
