Applications / Re: SAMBA Network access denied
« on: October 01, 2020, 03:50:48 pm »
I'm planning to extend my notes for other eCS and ArcaOS versions, but for now, look at my Samba page here:

http://www.blondeguy.com/SambaforOS2.html

Yes, the user situation is a mess. The documentation currently consists of a few notes from the developers "Some documentation would be nice."

I use Samba all the time. My clients are eCS, ArcaOS, Mac, Windows, iOS and iPadOS. Once you get through the users problem and the protocol problems, things work pretty well. Our implementation of SAMBA still does not respect OS/2 notions of "Last Write Date" which kind if sucks for developers who want to use the make utility.

Hardware / Re: Question about a sound card and GPU
« on: September 28, 2020, 04:08:12 am »
I thought the Xeon had the same built-in graphics as Celeron, Pentium, and core-i series. That's probably the fastest graphics for OS/2. You can try an expensive add-in card, but it will probably be slower, since OS/2 won't use any of the nice features of the "faster" card.

I expect the video would be faster if you remove the NVidia adapter.

Does anyone have a list of USB Ethernet adapters that use the Moschip?

Multimedia / Re: Updated Uniaud32 build
« on: September 08, 2020, 05:52:16 am »
I'm trying the updated Uniaud32 builds on a Lenovo ThinkCentre M720s, which is a current model. There is an error message at boot time that goes by too quickly to read. No sound, and unimix says there are no cards.

I tried uniaud32-linux-4.0.9-20200816 and uniaud32-linux-3.17.8-20200824

I am guessing from the PCI output that this is Intel High Definition Audio. 8086:A348

The page listed below says that the support is found in Linux kernels: 3.15–3.19, 4.0–4.20, 5.0–5.8, 5.9-rc+HEAD

https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/SND_HDA_INTEL.html

I am attaching a testlog uniaud in the hope that there is something useful logged.

Hardware / Re: Question about USB Audio (Input / Output).
« on: August 25, 2020, 06:01:22 am »
The UGREEN unit looks like a USB audio 1. Simple mono input, low quality stereo output.

USB Audio 2.0 looks like a DJ mixing station. In fact, I think that is what most of them are used for.

I will help, but it looks too difficult.

Just getting Samba Users and Groups running under ArcaOS 5.0.5 took weeks. I'm hoping the new Samba uses the same password stuff and the same smb.conf stuff.

Some rough guide to how to migrate from 3.6 to the new Samba test version would be helpful.

You'll need to get all the servers and clients to agree on the security protocol

One last thing that is needed to make this work with newer clients. Set max protocol = SMB2 in smb.conf. This can be down with the edit smb.conf icon. Restart the samba server for the change to become effective. I suspect there may be other configuration changes needed by some people but I can't test every scenario.

I'm sure ArcaOS 5.1 will run a newer Samba server that is easier to configure. The challenge is that we are stuck with what we've got, and running Samba 4 takes way, way more sophistication to use without a user interface or end-user documentation.

One thing that the Samba writers on Linux do not consider is that we are coming from the original SMB networking platform. That is so many generations ago that they specifically forbid it to work. But that is what we run today, so if we want to move on, I guess they expect us to copy all our files using floppies.

Even the Samba 3 server we have in ArcaOS is too new to fully support the IBM file and print client. It works for a few simple cases.

Removing wheel from root does indeed fix ArcaOS.

Better to do it from command line.

    groupmod -x "wheel"

As an alternative, I set up a fix using Suntan Special. I'd like Samba to work for my customers. Upgrading to a new machine is much easier when they share files.

Setup & Installation / Re: Problematic OS/2 installation on IBM x3200
« on: August 20, 2020, 03:59:34 pm »
Once I added a SATA hard drive, I was able to install on x3100 from eCS disks with no changes. I had USB problems.

If your USB does not work, try USB on the internal connector.

I got a 3100 to run the then latest eCS 2.2 beta 2 by putting in an IDE hard drive.

(Totally not worth it if you pay for your own electricity. A brand new Lenovo ThinkCentre would be cheaper in a year.)

Actually I had 8 of them and 2 failed in 24/7 use. USB Mouse and Keyboard will be problematic, but kind-of work.

With the release of USB driver 12.07, Arca Noae has fixed each of my machines that had USB problems.

I now have trouble-free USB support for all the machines on my website http://www.blondeguy.com/ComputersForSale.html

Utilities / Re: Is there a cron application that works on ArcaOS?

Another suggestion for a chron-like utility

https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/?dir=%2F&stype=all&sort=type_name&search=atrgf

I used this on some eCS and ArcaOS systems. But it is trying to be AT rather than chron.

Applications / Re: Windows 10 and ArcaOS 5.x Dual Boot
« on: August 15, 2020, 09:21:57 pm »
I boot ArcaOS installer on a USB stick, and to go the System Maintenance window. I'm not at an installer right now, so going from memory, I do the following

I enter Volume Management (Simple) or whatever to access the ArcaOS volume manager.

I rewrite the MBR (File menu?) Then I save changes.

When I reboot, Windows starts.

(On my X250, I tried a new hard drive, made the partitions and installed Windows. Now it's all working again. I still would love to know how to repair a broken installation.)

Pardon me for jumping in, but my problem is so similar, it might be worth looking at.

I'm having a similar problem with Windows 10 and ArcaOS 5.0.5 on my Thinkpad X250. I had both running smoothly with AirBoot. I used ArcaOS to shrink the Windows 10 large partition and placed the ArcaOS partitions at the end of the disk. Everything was done with the ArcaOS installer.

But then I created one more partition, and now AirBoot does not work. It puts up the first part of the disk menu, pauses for almost a second, then puts up a blank screen. Reinstalling AirBoot does nothing. If I put in a plain MBR, Windows 10 boots fine.
