Applications / Re: No word from Mensys/XEU - Alternatives?
« on: January 09, 2015, 05:07:44 pm »
I find the discussion of abandoneware and copyrights amusing.

When I purchase a License from Xeu for eComstation then IBM and potentially Microsoft get a cut.

Seems if a product is still being sold it is an actual product.

I notice the ecomstation.com web site has an "ORDER" button that has a link to "https://shop.xeu.com/"

These would of course be new licenses. Is the concern  that these will not be available?

Hardware / Re: eCS on an eCS board based computer?

Build one and let us know. I like the PS/2 ports. I have old KVMs that use PS/2. Can this machine use more than 512 MB or does it have the limit that many new Intel machines have.

I work with secure communications and encryption. I have a patent in encryption and live up the road from NIST and know some NSA encryption people. I can tell you that all public encryption is vulnerable. It does not matter what cypher is used because the public encryption is what passes the keys. The  best cypher in the world is no good if the keys can be read. There are techniques for breaking the public encryption that have nothing to do with knowing the keys. This current SSL bug only added a simple way for some people to breach systems.

I had a boss that would ask to see a demo of a project and after he saw it would say "Great, now you can stop working, it's done."

Setup & Installation / Re: Is eComStation DEAD?

It would seem that XEU bought Ecomstation for business reasons. It would therefore be illogical to immediately dispose of it.
XEU looks to be promoting banking software. Since OS/2 has had a long history in banking it looks like Ecomstation was a strategic buy.

Article Discussions / Re: ecs 2.2
« on: October 16, 2013, 10:19:50 pm »
I have spoken with Bob St. John who was with Serenity Systems. He originally was the IBM executive who sold OS/2 internationally. Later he attempted to use OS/2 as a cloud platform based on Desktop On Demand. That effort failed when the development team was purchased by another company and tasked to other duties.  He said the intellectual rights to eComstation were sold to Mensys a few years ago. Mensys announced a new agreement with IBM last year which makes them in charge of future development. Bob St. John has no concerns about the development efforts of Mensys.

What's with all the complaining. There is steady, dry, tedious, boring work being done to keep ecs current. The people doing this have better things to do than hold your hand.

Programming / Re: Test build of GCC 4.7.3 available

Hello Paul:
I greatly appreciate the compiler work you have done. I have used many of the versions with success.
Please keep them coming. In the past I have contributed, maybe you need some more :-)

I have been swamped and have not had time to test the test-build you just posted.

Thanks for the info Doug. I will be waiting for a Mesys fix.
I tried the solution from Joop and found it hung the machine during boot with the DVMT setting of 512 (video memory allocated). When I changed the setting to 128 the machine booted fine. This change did not fix the memory reported by eCs. At present I am using the machine with the 512 real memory limit. I would like to have more because there are more applications I would like to run.

Hardware / Intel DH77EB suffers from 512 MB limit, is there a solution?
« on: August 24, 2013, 11:52:42 pm »
I have an Intel DH77EB motherboard which has eCs 2.1 installed. To get it to work I had to install the updated ACPI. The system runs but only reports 512 MB  of memory. It has much more. I had heard this could be a Boot Loader issue. Can anyone shed more light on the status of this?

In an earlier post Martin says this platform is "dying". Well, that has been the case since 1994 when Gerstner had had his people tell Microsoft that OS/2 was not going to be marketed to home users anymore.
Since then there are new reasons to keep this platform alive. The least of which is virus control.

The work done recently on USB, ACPI and video is very encouraging for the continuation of THE platform.
The hardware problems that this thread discusses all seem related to areas where work is in progress.

I have noticed a problem with some DNS servers and eCs. Try manually using a different DNS server.
For a test try 71.246.225.59
