Utilities / Re: FM/2 loading issue

Ben

Try deleting your FM3.ini file.  Then open FM/2 again.  You are going to have to go back and redo your properties settings.

Programming / Re: Trying to build my First RPM Package

Excellent job Martin.  Good job of explaining the process.  I know that programs can be installed with RPM.  What about file systems and device drivers?  Not that I am a REXX user, but can REXX be utilized during the install process?

When I have shadow icons selected, they show up in all the subfolders, but not on the desktop.

Could you clarify the problem? I don't know what you mean by "When I have shadow icons selected". Are you referring to the option "Mark shadow icons"? If so, then it WFM everywhere.

Hi Rich

Yes , I have the option "Mark shadow Icons" selected.  I just figured out what the problem is and it is something you referred to in an earlier posting.  The problem only occurs in a folder where  Display > Dynamic is selected.  When unselected, the shadow icon appears on the shadow icons as it should.  There is no problem when display dynamic is not selected.  Problem solved.

I'm pleased to announce the first beta for XWorkplace v1.0.12.

Beta 1 is available in five languages and two versions:
- "Full", the standard full-featured build
- "Lite", similar to eWorkplace and ArcaOS Desktop

Portions of this update have been underwritten by Arca Noae, LLC.

I have a problem and I am wondering if others have seen it.  When I have shadow icons selected, they show up in all the subfolders, but not on the desktop.

I have a problem that has been nagging me for years. It's a nuisance, not a major problem but I'm wondering if anyone here has a solution.

When using the ALT-F! CMD my favourite file manager is FMT. However, whenever I try to load FMT from the boot drive it just hangs with a flashing "_". I can CAD and reboot.

I have the FM/2 directory in my path statements. I have tried *.cmd files with contents like;

'F:
cd \FM2
FMT.exe'

or simply

'F:\FM2\FMT.exe'

but it always hangs the system when in the root directory on the boot drive.

What DOES work is simply changing to F: and then running any of the above *.cmds.

Does anyone have any idea why these problems persist or possibly come up with a CMD that would solve this issue?

Thanks.

I just created and tested with a cmd file in the root directory on bootup.  It worked fine.  Is F the drive that contains the fmt.exe?  The reason I ask is that its config file refers to F drive .  This drive letter is changeable.  I changed mine to D: drive, which is my ArcaOS drive  and my cmd file uses D drive.  One other difference in my cmd file is that I used the @echo off statement at the beginning of the cmd file.

In all the many years that I have used FM/2, I never knew this program existed.  Ben, I thought it came with the utilities package, but was not included.  Then I searched Hobbes and sure enough, it is there.

I have to agree with Dave.  Andreas is very direct and to the point.  He does not sugar coat anything.  I was on the receiving end of one of his hard hitting analysis.  His input can be so hard hitting, one can almost assume he is being attacked for his ignorance or lack of knowledge.  It hurts and yes I can see where peoples feelings can be affected.  Although I did not agree with everything he said, I did appreciate Andreas showing me the errors I made in some of my assumptions.  However, the points I disagreed with him on were small and not worth further pursuit.

I did misunderstand.  Your video did what you intended and I do mean it, you made it look so easy doing this video although I know it required hours of work.  Thanks again.  Your modified system is amazing.  I did notice you mentioned some hardware drivers made for your system.  Are these not available?

I created my own 'VLC' directory and populated it with the exe from 'bin', the dlls from 'lib', and the 'vlc' subdirectory also in 'lib'.

Seems you'd lose access to the plugins going this way as they're often hard coded to use relative or worse, absolute paths.

I don't want to be giving out half-assed advice, so I took your comment to heart and did some testing.

I moved the 'vlc' subdirectory (x:\vlc\vlc) with the plugins and scripts to a more orthodox location (x:\vlc\lib\vlc) but vlc.exe wouldn't start, saying it couldn't find its plugins. Using my simplified directory structure, it had no problem finding them so the relative or hard-coded path issue isn't an issue for vlc.

When I opened "Tools->Effects and filters", my console window displayed a bunch of errors reporting that it couldn't find various video effects. Looking through the 'video_filter' directory, it became obvious that the problem was the various dlls' 8.3 names which were too short and not the usual "file not found" error. Attempts to use these effects caused both vlc _and_ seamonkey to crash, and left me with trashed video that required a reboot.

Rich, setting my VLC up the way you suggested and opening "Tools->Effects and filters", everything displays normally.  I checked other items listed in the Tools menu and it all worked fine.  I had copied all the items listed in the "lib" folder including all its subdirectories to the main folder where I had copied the executable.

Article Discussions / Re: OS2VOICE RPM Server

Just to add: everybody can always extract the original WIS installation script file from a WPI archive. It's ASCII plain text and the syntax well explained in the documentation that comes with WarpIn.

That is, even for unmaintained WPI packages:
1) we can fix the installation by extracting the original WIS script from the WPI, modifying it to our liking and putting it back into the WPI
2) we can deduce an uninstallation script (Rich's suggestion) from what the original WIS installation script does

The only thing that has always been a mess is that with WarpIn you can easily screw up your config.sys to a point where after uninstallation of a WPI the system will no longer boot. See the FAT32 WPI.
Short rule: NEVER EVER have a WPI script modify PATH or LIBPATH with subdirectory paths that you can expect to exist (like \OS2 or \OS2\DLL).

For those that are not aware of it, there is a very useful program for reviewing wpi files on Hobbes.  This is a front end for reviewing the files enclosed in the WPI, the wis script, and and if the config.sys is to be modified.  It can unpackage the files and also save a copy of the wis script to anywhere one wants.  This helped me tremendously when I was writing wpi's for my eschemes years ago.

...I found the problem with VLC3.  I had to add the its "lib" folder to the Libpath statement in the config.sys,  It now works as it should....

[...] a more flexible/safe way would be to create a vlc.cmd file in the VCL directory which modifies the LIBPATH for just the VLC session, that way the VLC install will not impact anything else on your system. Here is what's in my vlc.cmd:

=== START ===
SET BEGINLIBPATH=G:\apps\multimedia\vlc2\usr\local\lib;%BEGINLIBPATH%
G:\apps\multimedia\vlc2\usr\local\bin\vlc.exe %1
=== STOP ===

...then my VLC program object simply points to the VLC.CMD script.
I created my own 'VLC' directory and populated it with the exe from 'bin', the dlls from 'lib', and the 'vlc' subdirectory also in 'lib'. I dragged the exe to the Desktop so the WPS would create a program object and I was done - except for deleting all the unnecessary garbage that was left behind.

Thanks Rich! That was an even better solution.  It was so easy what you suggested.

It worked great.  One more question.  A command prompt comes up before the program starts.  The program starts with the command prompt in the background.  I tried settings in properties to minimize the command prompt after it starts, but nothing works.  Any suggestions?

Thanks Dariusz!  I am going to give it a try.  I have been wondering if I would have to keep adding to my libpath statement every time I use one of these ported programs.

All free of charge of course.

Nothing is "free'. You either put some effort into helping, or you support it by paying for it. Anybody who thinks it will come "free" is dreaming.

Hi Doug.

I disagree. There are people that like to help other for free. There are people that runs websites, compile software, create kernels and answer forums for free with the goal to help people and their communities.

Martin
I think their is no disagreement between you two.  What you have stated is what Doug means.  One either puts in time receiving no monetary return or or one does it for some monetary return.  It's either time or money.  That's what he means by nothing is free.

[valerius] LewisR EA would be supported like FAT, e.g. with emulating
EA's via files, it it's needed. But the main purpose of ext2
support is not using as an OS/2 partition, but more as a means
           for exchanging data with Linux.

I think this is a good point Valery brought up during the chat session.  By the way, thank you Valery for a fully functional fat32 driver! I downloaded your latest driver and it works great.  This is a must for every non Windows operating system.  If we want to lure Linux users to try out ArcaOS, it needs an updated ext2 driver for them to access their linux systems.   I agree with Valery that it is needed for the exchange of data.  This could be another selling point.  It would be nice also if there was a working NTFS driver for ArcaOS.  I have tried Netdrive and it will not work (unless I have done something wrong).

[LewisR] VMs: Do we need VMs as in running ArcaOS as a hypervisor?

[LewisR] I don't see a 32-bit OS as a very useful hypervisor, personally,
though there are reasons to run smaller OSes under ArcaOS.
[Roderick] Well I tried the BWW Virtualbox and one big issue is that
ArcaOS can only use 4 GB of RAM. We have the new loader that
           you can use a ramdrive.

Is it possible to do on-the-fly RAM compression to increase the amount of RAM available?   Have 4 GB available , but when compressed, have more of the 4GB of RAM available for use. Remember when hard drives were compressed (Stacker 4 for OS/2, Zipstream) to give people more space due to the limitation of the drives back in the late 80's and early nineties. Due to the speed of RAM, there might not be too big of a performance hit.

With ArcaOS, one can now create a RAM drive and put in low and/orhigh memory.  If this were feasible, an option could be make available to compress the RAM drive.

I wonder if 7-zip could be utilized to do any of this.

7-Zip is probably the leading free file compression software for Windows with its amazing ability to shrink files on the fly. It has advanced functionalities that include the capacity to produce solid and self-extracting archives as well as to modify password protection and compression level. Albeit it has a minimalistic interface, it is easy to understand and operate. 7-Zip supports 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, Z, TAR, CPIO, RPM, and DEB. For a free software, the performance is close to perfection. stated by RAMESH NATARAJAN on SEPTEMBER 13, 2011 -Top Five File Compression software
