Networking / Re: Netdrive and ArcaOS
« on: April 08, 2024, 03:57:18 am »
Neil, everyone...

You can just run the NetDrive installer on ArcaOS, and it will replace the Arca Noae version with the full version. It even keeps your NetDrive settings the same.

Slightly different outcome here, although this is OS/2 SMP 4.52, so not an out-of-the-box AN install.

Anyways...I have been using NetDrive for some years now, and have installed in the same configuration the AN ArcapMapper stuff, primarily for testing purposes.

Both work, one does not replace the other (as far as binaries go), from functionality perspective that is somewhat the case (with the already mentioned shortcomings of the AN solution), but the programs are different.

So Glenn, you should be able to install NetDrive and have it functioning on it's own...but as mentioned, carefully navigate as both of these solutions attempt to deliver the same functionality.

Hello KO!

OK, done...here are the snippets for both SNAP & VMAN (where VMAN did actually work and SNAP did not):

I truncated the remaining LOG entries because they are just repeating as the file continues to be read.

The only strange thing (perhaps?) which I noticed is that VMAN also shows "KAI: Open failed!!!" log entry, however it does produce actual video playback.

...How about trying to launch mplayer with default options, that is, just [mplayer mp4-file] ? In this case, you should rename your ini file.

Finally, this is true for VLC ?

In order to rule out any of my config options I ran from CLI having previously renamed smplyer's CONFIG file so that it wouldn't be pulled in.

Yes, this is consistent in VLC as well (3.0.18 here), which I have set to VMAN previously (at some point in time).

Thanks!

OK, so DIVE made no difference, but as I looked into this more I noted that my mplayer version was a little old.

So off I went deploying the most recent release, alas, same result:

Multimedia / mplayer - just stopped working...sort of...
« on: March 30, 2024, 07:23:15 pm »
I've been using mplayer for years...only recently (yesterday in fact) noticed that when attempting to play a MP4 file it looks like no actual video is created, although the app itself starts.

So looking into this I found the following in the LOG:

Quote

...indeed, the "KVA: Setup failed!!!" is reporting out a problem initiating the video outout.

OK, so I went back to my startup CMD, which is:

Code: [Select]

G:\apps\multimedia\mplayer\mplayer.exe -xy %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6

And here is what my mplayer.ini file looks like:

Is anything jumping out at anyone here? Like I said above, this is the config I've been running for somet time now, heck, my last update of anything is about 2022 timeframe.

Going to try with DIVE next to see if that results in something different...

As always: thanks everyone!

Applications / Re: Windows Key - Custom Key Combination
« on: March 29, 2024, 07:23:15 pm »
Hi Martin,

Have you tried using win95key to do what you want?  There are quite a number of options there.

Perfect...you beat me to it ivan...I just responded to Martin's XWP thread with the same suggestion!

Applications / Re: XWP v1.0.16
« on: March 29, 2024, 07:22:05 pm »
When I add a hotkey, on the "Hotkey" field, I can only make key combinations that starts with the "Ctrl" and "Shift" key. ex:  "Ctrl+Shift+Alt+A" or "Shift+Alt+A" (Pic_001)
There can not be combinations that start or uses the "Windows key" or "Win Menu" key.

On OS/2, the Win and Menu keys are just "character" keys not "shift" keys. What you're asking for is equivalent to asking "Why can't I use '<Tab>-9' or <F3>-Q' as a hotkey combo?". Shift/Ctrl/Alt set flags to indicate they were down when some other key was pressed. There just isn't a Win or Menu flag in OS/2.

OK, but the Win95Key utility readily recognizes my WINeverything keys as separate objects: LWIN, RWIN & WINMENU, so while w/o looking at it's code it's hard to tell whether these are just internal definitions (for it's own purposes) or actual key values, the point remains: these keys are recognized as being unique keys different from all the other keyboard keys.

...Maybe using an "Object Hotkey" which lets you set a key-combo to open an object will serve some of your needs. You can set this on the 'Icon' page of any object's notebook (e.g. have Dooble open when you press "Alt-Shift-D').

Martin,
I realize this isn't the XWP answer you are looking for, but the Win95Key util could be used to define such combinations and in a sense 'introduce' the functionality you are looking at into XWP...further research needed though as I haven't played with this. I simply use my WIN keys to map to frequently used OS/2 & WPS functions.

Programming / Re: REXX IDE recommendations?
« on: March 27, 2024, 01:23:38 am »
Does anyone have a recommendation for a REXX IDE, and preferably one that runs on traditional OS/2 (i.e as opposed to one that needs the libraries included with ArcaOS)?

IDE is perhaps the wrong word, I really just mean something that has good syntax highlighting or can even highlight errors...

My personal favourite is VSE (Visual SlickEdit). The only problem being: commercial software that was never released to the public domain after the OS/2 version releases were stopped.

Having said that, look around and you'll find it. The benefit, serious amount of not just syntax highlighting, but the abilityt organize things into Projects, etc, etc.

Truly a programmer's editor!

Do you know which package is needed to add the missing header files? This is the gcc from netlabs-rel (9.2.0-4.oc00)

'yum provides */sys/cdefs.h' at CLI will list a bunch of RPM packages...I'm thinking you'd pick the most appropriate one for your situation

Rich & Martin,

Query os2.ini->PM_SystemFonts->WindowText to get the font name & size, then use it.

Which specific lswitch282.ini key are we talking about here?

I see the following:

1) TitleFont
2) ButtonFont (which I suspect is the TaskBar button)
3) HintsFont

...haven't tried any of them yet as none seem to imply the PopUp font control, which is what I'm interested in changing (b/c the TaskBar seems to be just fine).

Setup & Installation / Re: CUPS tripped up SeaMonkey and Firefox
« on: February 10, 2024, 02:55:12 pm »
...Press CTRL-P and in the printing dialog box, change your printer to no printer or IBMNULL, close the browser and retry. If it works, repeat with SeaMonkey.
If it doesn't work, report how far along you got, we may have to edit your prefs.js file.
Of course the simplest is if you have a backup from before you played with printing, if so if so, let me know and I'll explain how to replace prefs.js

Dave's right on the money here if you can start the application in safe mode.

I believe the actual config preference that points to the ACTIVE printer (basically the last selected one) is "print_printer", so if the applications are unusable it may be necessary to look for that in prefs.js and adjust it there accordingly.

In my case, here is what that looks like in prefs.js:

Code: [Select]
user_pref("print_printer", "PSPRINT.Brother HL-5470DW");

You will see other printers listed in your prefs.js, you could simply pick a value that represents such a valid printer and put that into the "print_printer".

For example, the above printer is actually defined as:

Code: [Select]
user_pref("print.printer_PSPRINT.Brother HL-5470DW.printer_description", "Brother HL-5470DW BR-Script3 OS (PSPRINT)");

If that does not work, it may be possible to just set that to a NULL value, perhaps just "", but I haven't tried that.

Aha...I think I know the root cause here, or at least a worthy attempt to fix this.

I have encountered this before while attempting to remove a FXPrint printer setup.

It would seem the application stores the printer selection from the last time you used that printer. However, if that printer is now no longer defined/present, the application may not gracefully handle that and it may subsequently crash.

This was some time ago, but I think I ultimately editted either the app INI settings, or the OS2.INI file for this specific application. By "editted" I mean I removed the reference to that printer which no longer existed on my system.

So in your case, given that Seamonkey is the culprit, check the appropriate entries that might reference the printer.

...in the meantime I'll scratch my head a little more to remember the specific of what I had encountered...

ivan,

Excuse me for butting in but what is the difference between the i686 to pentium4 versions of any DLL and why is there the two versions?

The packages are built with CPU specific optimizations, and those will differ between i686 and P4. In particular for the P4 CPUs the focus is on using the MMX, SSE and SSE2 instruction set.

Keep in mind that this whole approach is applicable to multiple GCC compilation options, be it '-mtune' or '-march', and there are always the more generic options that just focus on generating either FASTER code, or SMALLER code.
