From my knowledge it is like this:

- GPT is a new (different) HDD Layout, that replaces MBR (Master Boot Record). There is no coexistence on one HDD, so you can only have the HDD Used in one way: MBR or GPT

- UEFI is a new (enhanced) BIOS, that replaces the "Old" BIOS. Some of the UEFI/EFI Bios still have an "CSM" Compatible Modul to support the "old" BIOS standard. I.e.: Booting in "Legacy mode"

- Secure Boot is a new way to prevent Attacks/Virus from the BIOS. Operating Systems need a key wich marks them as "Secure" and then the Boot process continues.

("new" means new to OS/2, everything is avaible for several years now)

Restrictions:

On MBR HDDs the Bootmanager is on one Partition (Like IBM OS/2 Bootmanger) or resides in the MBR itself (like Airboot Manager).

On UEFI Systems there is a separat "EFI" Partition on the HDD, where all the OS have their entrys. The OS are booted from this Partition.

UEFI BIOS needs GPT HDD Layout (only Exception: The UEFI BIOS uses the CSM Mode if present!)

SecureBoot needs UEFI BIOS

I very informative internetpage: https://www.heise.de/select/ct/2018/22/1540542514723734
(German, please use Online Translator)

Regarding OS/2, eCS, ArcaOS up to 5.0.7. on modern Hardware:

These Versions need so far:
- "old" BIOS or UEFI BIOS in CSM Mode
- MBR (GPT not possible)
- SecureBoot not possible

Funfact:
- Installing These Version next to Windows 11 is hard (but not impossible) as Windows 11 usually checks SecureBoot

ArcaOS 5.1 now will come with

- GPT
- UEFI

But these two things have to be completed with a Secureboot key.

FYI... I worked for AN for 5 years before quitting last February.

Hi Rich,

that is funny, during my Presentation at Cologne I talked about ISOFS, using it i.e. to store the content of teh AVARICE game CD so the game can be played on Laptops without a CDROM.
And I mentioned, unfortunately I did not know the author of ISOFS ::)

Right now I realized that in fact it is you - in German we call such things a "Treppenwitz"  ;) :D

Thanks for this great program!

I do have a wish though: it is possible to mount the Trials of Battle (TOB) ISO Image with ISOFS, but once you want to start the game it stops, saying "Put the CD in the Drive".

The same happend for a long time with Virtual CD Drives inside Virtualbox, but at some point Virtualbox did overcome this and today one can play TOB with OS/2 inside Virtualbox with the ISO in the Virtual CD Drive.

I guess it is a problem with some kind of Copyright Protection of the TOB CD. As I am a fan of OS/2 nativ on bare metal I would like to ask: do you see a chance that ISOFS can overcome this as well?

But I don't want to bother you, it is just something I would like to have.

Thanks for your Thoughts about it!

Thank you very much, the QSINIT Developer was my best guess  :) I wonder why these informations have not been included in the Presentation.

If I understand you correct: if it is possible to boot eCs on UEFI only it should be possible to boot an with AN Drivers updated MCP 4.52 (what is my main system) as well, shouldn't it?

Would you share these two lines wich have to be changed in config.sys? My guess is that one may be able to use an updated QSINIT and need the filter driver.

Again: Thank you very much!

Hi Tom,

thank you very much for the explanation, my comment before was a bit misleading, sorry.

I mean I have no clue who is doing the work.

I do know what UEFI, Secure Boot and GPT means.

Thanks again!!!

Hi Andi,

I read my information form Rodericks Warpstock Presentation here - please see attached picture.

But I was not able to understand more about it during his Presentation.

If I understand correctly U/EFI and GPT for ArcaOS are not developed by ArcaNoae.

Does anyone has a clue wich person/s / organzation is doing this?

Thank you very much!

My guess would be someone like the QSINIT Developer or Daniela Engert. But that is only a guess.

Or is the plan to keep it as some kind of "Unknown mysterious Miracle" ?  ;)

Heh Sigurd!

Best!

M

Hi Mark,

thank you very much for your kind words and deep explanations!  I really do appreciate the work you and your fellows are doing in this thread, great!

I made a presentation at our (sadly) Last User Meeting in Cologne yesterday with Dosbox and ScummVm as topics. I remember the painfull memory management and config.sys trials and errors to get in 1995 enough free memory on MS DOS 6.22 (needed almost 580/590k of free memory if i remember correctly), for my first (and still for me one of alltime best) DOS Game named BIOFORGE from Origin. So my 486 PC at that time had Dualboot with OS/2 Warp 3 and MS DOS 6.22.

Bioforge never run in DOS VDM, the same goes for Baphomets Fluch II (I think it is named: Broken Sword 2 in English), a wonderfull graphical adventure that forced me to buy Windows 95, as it did not run on DOS nur OS/2 DOS VDM. I did play Broken Sword 1 before, that was available for DOS. But it never run in DOS VDM either.

After several Years Paul Smedley thankfully ported ScummVM to OS/2, wich makes - with a lot of other DOS Games and even Hopkins FBI, - Broken Sword 1+2 playable on OS/2, without any restrictions!

And Jochen Schäfers Port of Dosbox for OS/2 finally lead to a 100% playable BIOFORGE with OS/2!

So, since I do already have an OS/2 Retro Games machine (possible with Warp 4, eComStation or ArcaOS) using these two Emulators wich opened the Door (not window ;-) ) for almost each and any DOS Game for OS/2.

All the best and good luck!!

Sigurd

Hi Paul,

while we had our User Meeting in Cologne yesterday, we discussed about the New Browser and your work here as well. We could not figure out: do you do this in colaboration with bitwise? Do you sync your work with them, Silvan, Dimitry, Herwig, are you in contact with them?

The attendents collected 400 Euro yesterday, that will be sent to Bitwise supporting their work.

Thanks for some background information!

Just my 2 Cents here: Have not read through the whole thread but in my opinion one should Focus on Dosbox instead of DOS VDM.

This is because:

- DOSbox has integrated Soundblaster AND Ultrasound Support, preconfigured. Working out of the Box. As long as Arcaos Supports Sound you will allways get Sound with Dosgames

E.G.: try to install Warcraft 2 inside DOS VDM, the setup will not recognize the soundcards. Install it in Dosbox and it will find Soundblaster AND Ultrasound

- DOSBox is able to handle the DOS4GW Extender, that is needed for many later DOS Games. This did never reliable work, if at all, in DOS VDM

Keeping this in mind I would Focus on Gamepad Support in Dosbox rather then invest time in any kind of work (Sound, Extender etc.) in DOS VDM.

DOS VDM is a waste of time as it will never reach the quality of Dosbox, due to technical Limitations.

And best of all: DOSBOX is free of charge and an installable wpi.

Just my two Cents.

All the best!

Applications / Re: Java applications

I'm pissed off on OS/2 because its the fourth time they shift nationalized version for a year. So, now I'm waiting for four years. Still no sign when it will come, if ever! I want my OS in my language in case of trouble and want to understand what's going on. English sucks when it comes to pinpointing problems. Don't get me wrong, I'm not alone in this.

Hi Joop,

I just stumbled across your post today. You are not alone. This is exactly the reason why my time and the money I invest in OS/2 and ArcaOS will also be close to zero.

No matter what the same people always bring for the same arguments as to why it doesn't work again, the result is that the NLV versions are simply not there. Fact. The same goes for WLAN.

We will have a nice, last OS/2 User meeting in Cologne on November the 5th and that's it.

For sure I will spent some time with the "Original" Warp 3 and Warp 4 Installations on my Retro Hardware, but there is no need for ArcaOS, the same applies to OS/2 in a virtual environment.

Wish you all the best, stay healthy!

I don't want make a political thread, but I do not understand the restrictions on us. Eugene and friends did not cause this situation. Supporting them will not affect the situation in Ukraine. Can someone who understands the sanctions post a simple statement of what we can and cannot do?

When it comes to the EU you can have a look here:

https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/policies/sanctions/restrictive-measures-against-russia-over-ukraine/sanctions-against-russia-explained/

One of the points:
- cutting-edge technology (e.g. quantum computers and advanced semiconductors, high-end electronics and software)

Official site of the EU Commission. Please keep in mind that the restrictions are subject to constant, even short-term, changes or tightening.
