Internet / Re: lost in Hobbes

Thanks Sergey. Didn't notice this change: Since 23.11.2008 NFTP is no longer shareware. It is freeware. Good to know that we have another option for a recent FTP client. While ncftp is just a FTP cmdline client (similar to the old IBM version), your nftp screenshot looks like it comes with a built-in file manager.

The file meshell-os2.txt has 0 bytes. The .wpi file is OK. See the files in incoming here.

Rename the .txt file to .txt.delete and upload it again with a suitable FTP client. See the Hobbes upload policy. Rename works only for a short time after the upload. Otherwise address Curtis.

No, they are not in /pub/delayed, nor in /pub/new. Just try again or address Curtis, the Hobbes maintainer.

BTW: Which FTP client have you used to upload the files? (Hobbes requires passive FTP. E.g. using the standard OS/2 client leads to corrupted data, but its result appeared as yet. A suitable OS/2 FTP client is ncftp.)

AH-HA! That's probably exactly the cause of my issue then. I wonder if netlabs would accept a 'build-essentials' RPM metapackage that would install all of the needed packages (gcc, etc).

I don't see why not, they might have some ideas about what it should contain.

netlabs.org consisists of the developers that use Adrian's facility to host projects. For to address someone, you should better address the maintainers of the netlabs.org .rpm repository. That's bww, not Adrian. (BTW: My project is on netlabs.org, too and I am not involved in any .rpm project, but I endorse that.)

In case of the .rpm files I have to say that bww uses the netlabs.org repository only for providing new packages. The sources, including bug tracker etc. were copied to GitHub long time ago.

I recommend the following: If you want to create a new SVN project with Trac, address Adrian. If you want to add something else or have the need of GitHub, contact Martin. If you want to have something added to the .rpm repository, contact bww.

General Discussion / Re: eCS 2.2 purchase
« on: June 08, 2022, 02:38:04 pm »
For Hardware since about 2016, you need newer drivers than the ones in eCS 2.2 beta 2 + latest CVS additions.

For example, I always had problems with the USB drivers from the eCS times with a board from 2015. Newer systems can't even be installed without recent drivers. But due to the limited contiguous memory amount, the maximum of usable hardware is about at i5. (About 1 GB recognized memory with newer systems is too little.) Usually the RAM for a built-in video driver uses a part of the recognized RAM. Consider that and eventually use an additional video card instead.

In your case, it's a very old T42. That one is supported by Warp 4.x, eCS and Arca OS. Compared with more recent hardware, the T42 is quite slow. At least replace the HD with a SSD. Don't expect the system to work with newer Web sites. I would start with newer hardware.

Applications / Re: Password manager

I use eAccounts from Frank Wochatz: https://ecsoft2.org/eaccounts-account-manager
For a password manager it's important that its database can be copied/shared to/with other devices and OSs. That's the point Neil made also in his first post.

I got my passwords from Firefox45 to Strongbox on IOS, but keepassx on ArcaOS won't import the database because it says "Unsupported KeePass database version".

There is a community fork of KeePassX, called KeePassXC.
Months ago KeePassXC was recommended to me. It looks promising. After that, I discovered Silvan's port of KeePassX, which almost looks the same. But I haven't tried it so far.

I guess the transition from the KeePassX database to KeePassXC would have worked without problems, and maybe vice versa, too. (Yes, that's not the problem, but after the first read I thought that applies to your case.)

For non-experienced users it's near to impossible to get OS/2 Warp 4 (even 4.52) to work. Most of them try that because others are not available for nothing. Even the early ArcaOS versions can't be used (without fixes) on more modern hardware. That applies especially for SaMBa.

So, to non-experienced users: Always use the latest version. It's currently ArcaOS 5.0.7. Note that the systems actually lacks a recent and stable browser, even when Dooble is a great step forward. That may be changed in the near future.

Might be worth checking the following are installed, replace any i686 versions with P4 versions
Silvan told us that it would be useless to change all package to pentium4. That won't be an update. I don't know if that affects the packages you've listed.

I have just checked my old renamed zip version 2.30, probably got from Hobbes long time ago:

Hi Lutz,

as already written on os2.org, I've replaced the QNet4.dll with that from QNet4_Fix_SSL.zip, as Silvan wrote. But my issue (similar to yours) that SSL is not supported still applies. Strange.

Will try that on another installation, but not today.

Download from the cc-os2 page works. Thanks to both of you Dave and Andi.

Dave, your link to that contains a trailing doublequote char. Otherwise it's the same.

I like "proglang" too.
Ok, that makes it a bit easier. But moving all proglang files of /pub/os2/dev/ to that new subdir is much work. (IIRC, dirs are created automatically per placing archive files. Otherwise it would be easy by moving these trees with access to the file system. Maybe Curtis, the maintainer, has a better idea. I would address him first.)
