Applications / Re: how to restore command prompt (window)?
« on: January 25, 2015, 12:13:18 am »
Only problem is sometimes EPM gets confused after a lot of use.
Yes, there must exist a memory leak in EPM. It also crashes after loading (and unloading) of several hundred small files. Additionally, the file size for one loaded file is limited to about 60 MiB.

Its command shell mode is useful for 'make' calls. Note that the Vio functions don't work in PM mode. Therefore in some cases which require user interaction, e.g. for Yum, the return key has to be pressed blindly to let the waiting program proceed. ANSI escape sequences would make the output quite unreadable. They are filtered out in NEPMD > 1.00.

It's possible that you get more attention/answers when you post your problem
also to the dev@ and users@ mailing list [3].

Please never post a user problem to a developer's mailing list! The only exception would be if there exists no user list. Thank you.

Hardware / Re: New Computer

I agree with Andi.

Here's my recommendation for a low-noise 300 W power supply:

When I purchase a License from Xeu for eComstation then IBM [...]

Maybe - it depends on their contract.

[...] and potentially Microsoft get a cut.

Don't mix license and copyright up. IBM uses externally copyrighted code, but owns the license to sell code out of the Microsoft days, IIRC.

I hope that the unified installer will contain a visual display of applications and libraries etc. that I can choose from.
It will.

Mike, please post your experiences, when you're done, even if you won't make it work.

Hardware / Re: Motherboard woes

Suggestions for desktop managers I should look for? Cinnamon?
Yes, that's my recommendation. Sometimes it makes problems with installing Grub2, but sooner or later one gets it installed. You could install eCS in a VirtualBox environment then, if you still have the need for it.

The other option is to buy other hardware. No recommendations here from me. I'll try an MSI AMD board next, probably in the middle of January, depending on the availability of all parts.

VTeX doesn't work with the Beamer package, AFAIR due to missing pgf support.

You could either try os2tetex, which is not easy to install or another OS. ;-)

Doug, the point is not about avoiding something, but about getting the best out of the available options. Actually, you can't compare directly one option with another, because each of them has its own case of usage.

It sounds all like a timing issue. I had it here with all Mozilla apps new and quite old on OS/2. Maybe it won't happen without adblock plus or another extension - I haven't tried.

I have just found this to be the easiest method for me to work around the login problem:

I start the main page http://www.os2world.com/ as usual. I am not logged in. Then I just reload the page, either via the Mozilla controls or via clicking on the bookmark again. The page then shows me that I'm logged in.

General Discussion / Re: Arca Noae - just got my business!!!
« on: November 23, 2014, 02:24:24 am »
David made the ReadMe files available for his projects on the Wiki pages.

There are new versions with a few changes of ACPI, USB, Multimac (NVETH) and Multimac (E1000E).

Packages use either WarpIN or scripts (IIRC) to install on all OS/2 4.5 versions, not only on eCS. Additional update packages are available, according to the ReadMes.

I think that GPI should be a small box inside PM.  I think that if pmgpi.dll contains all GPI functions, maybe it is a component of PM.
Sure. They chose the prefixes well in those days.

Namely, this is the "Drivers Package"...and for OS/2 users like myself who did not wish to pursue the eCS move but wanted to update the OS to handle the newer hardware this was badly needed. Never understood why the folks behind eCS didn't seriously consider that option, even when inquiries were being sent it regarding it.

Arca Noae, great job you guys...keep up the effort!!!
Apparently there was nothing added as yet, compared to the Mensys Software Subscription. This release has nothing to do with migration. It's an option to provide experienced users with installable updates. That's surely not for the end user.

Mensys and co-programmers tried a real migration, which bases on the original IBM installation. That's a quite different approach, which can't be compared with the Arca Noae packages. In details you'll find that even the Mensys distributions contain separately installable packages. Most of them are placed in DVD:\CID\SERVER\ECSPKG.
