Tell me when you have a candidate for only one of the above 3 questions.

Seriously, I've been the maintainer of xwlan and our port of wpa_supplicant for about a decade. Although I've fixed and extended a lot and invested countless hours, even these two project are far from what we would need today. And that's only an interface to a driver. I know porting or writing a wifi driver would be a lot of more (huge more) work. From my experience the majority of 'non programmers' don't even get feedback. Not to talk about helping out with testing or writing readme's..... So dream on.

General Discussion / Re: Spam Bots

That's the site I'm talking about https://w1.fi/ (most probably).

Sorry I wrote Jouni Malinen's name wrong above. He wrote about spam bots and Anubis in the news group. As I don't have any knowledge about bots and protection I can't say anything about different approaches or software.

Joulian installed on the hostap/wpa_supplicant site something called Anubis. No clue what it is or does though. But he said traffic load goes down by more than 99% cause all of these bots are now blocked before they load the server.

Once again I've disabled messages from the group above. Again I worried about this newsletter which to many times advertises ancient programs. Even with no change to the software within the last decade the so called 'newsletter' lists such programs.

Do anyone like such regular advertising of stone age old software?

Terrible slow now. SM most of the time says something like 'waiting on TLS handshake' or simply waiting on os2world.com.

close to the first entry, perhaps after the dot, on LIBPATH in config.sys.
I always recommend BEFORE the dot. As the first entry. LIBPATH=%UNIXROOT%\usr\lib;%UNIXROOT%\usr\local\lib;........

I've always the '.;' entry as the last one in libpath. Otherwise some program which have an old dll in it's own directory will load this outdated one (if the right one was not loaded before). And afterwards no other program have a chance to load the correct one (except with libpathstrict and beginlibpath, but that's another topic)

Thank you to all who have answered my questions over the last week - much appreciated. However, I shall now be wiping my eCS box and installing something more, shall we say, polished...
It seems to me you've mixed dlls from wpis and rpm (yum, ANPM) which most of the time ends up in a mess. eCS have some important dlls in places where it may conflict with the right ones.

If you wanna install some sort of OS/2 which is more 'poished' you have to start with ArcaOS, not eCS. But of course there are other options too.

Hardware / Re: Soundblaster Live 1024 drivers
« on: August 22, 2025, 02:38:11 pm »
I wanted to avoid UNIAUD, because I have big problems with my development machine.
I don't know, if it the driver or the HW in my T480, but I wanted to try "native" drivers.

IIRC I once had a Terratec DMX Xfire 1024 but no driver. Terratec announced a Win31 driver but never delivered it. So I gave it back and bought a Turtle Beach Pinnacle instead. This one never had OS/2 drivers too. It uses some CS4xx chip too. But it worked (and still will when I set the IRQs in BIOS correct and boot up this ancient machine) in WinOS2.

Hardware / Re: SNAP Driver Source

...Dariusz for example uses an X850 IIRC and has a dual monitor setup...

For what it's worth, I cannot even imagine a Desktop environment with a single display anymore. The fact that I can enjoy such a hardware setup on our OS/2 platform is THE reason why I will continue to use SNAP.

...
I used the X300 mit dual monitor setup (2x 1920x1200) many years. For the newer system I have to put in a ATI 550 which after some work from David A. (ticket) could drive my new 42,5" 3840x2160 monitor with nativ resolution using Panorama. Intel integrated couldn't be convinced to do it right.

Now again about 8-10 years later my current system could not drive this resolution with current Panorama using AMD internal GPU. Additional ATI550 can be convinced to setup the right resolution. But then I've to set Virtualaddresslimit<=1536 as otherwise the system crashes immediately. But that's no useful option for me.

So after about 15-17 years using OS/2 with 3840x >=1200 I now have to switch to another primary OS. Or live with crappy 2560x1440 displayed on a 3840x2160 screen. :-( Or hope David accidently can fixes this memory problem.

Utilities / Re: Snap Shot / Save System State.
« on: August 08, 2025, 01:24:56 pm »
Once I had a big problem with VBOX snapshots. As one of the old snapshot files got damaged I couldn't go back or transfere to another machine or... Since then I don't use snapshots anymore. Never again. YMMV.

No we have no file system snapshots. zip -rS9# ... (replace # with the proper switch for symlinks, sorry don't know offhand). Or rar -x...  or rsync (we have luckybackup!).

System drive is usually small with OS/2. 1-2GB. So zip is a perfect solution for me. For big data drives I use rar scripts which splits files if the go beyond 2GB but rar is much slower than zip. rsyncing to network attached storage or usb works too. USB disks formated with JFS are not that slow.

On my sytems there are at least 2 working versions of OS/2 - ArcaOS installed. Although you can zip the system drive while running and it works (you only miss the worplace ini file changes since last reboot) I prefere backup from the other partition.

And did you have disabled EA support?

It shows something like 'can not find /E$/home/...' where it should look at E:/home/....
Now I've solved this. No clue what happens but I repaired by -
  • - open klusrmgr (samba user manager does not work here. Can't login and don't know why
  • - selecting proper user and edit
  • - although there was the path of home directory set to 'E:\home\... I changed it to ~\.... saved which does not work either
  • - then changed back to e:\home\...
And now 'ssh -v' magically looks at 'e:/Home/username/.ssh/id_r...'.

No clue if drive letter should be lowercase or / instead \ is needed or ....

Brother MFC-J6957DW
HP Officejet Pro X476dw MFP

Both can handle Postscript (and PCL) so work with psdriver (basic functions, no borderless printing or similar special things).

Setup & Installation / Re: Cannot update python

Is there any "force" mode to force the update ?
I only can suggest to try 'yum reinstall python3 python2' or maybe 'yum reinstall python3 python2.7' or 'yum reinstall python2'. But I don't know if reinstall works here. I think I've overcome such situation but can remember anything else then 'reinstall'. Maybe yum shell - remove python3 - run - exit. Don't know if it works. Removing python2 does not work for sure.

'yum remove python3' reboot and then 'yum reinstall python3 python2' together maybe worth to try too. Maybe your problem is only cause you're using 2.7 instead 2?

Good luck.

Currently can't say anything about codepage (UTF-8) but the new git version from KO Myung-Hun fixes another 'git clone https...' issue I saw a few days ago.

But now I stumbled over a ssh problem which I think causing this git fail on my local (NAS) repositories. ssh -v ... now shows that it can not find the home directories. It shows something like 'can not find /E$/home/...' where it should look at E:/home/....

I think I saw this before and that's the reason why I settled on git2.0.0 and older ssh on another system. But newest from netlabs.exp (and .rel) do not work here on a fresh ArcaOS5.1DE system.

One thing I've already repaired is /noexistant/home. For this we have to set a home directory for user root in klusmgr. Samba user manager does not work either on this fresh ArcaOS5.1DE so had to use klusmgr for that :-(. You also had to set a shell for root there. I set /usr/bin/sh. Think this is good but don't know. Any thoughts
