General Discussion / Re: ARCAOS Personal vs Commercial?
« on: May 30, 2017, 06:23:52 pm »
Hi Dean, welcome to the OS2World forums.

From a software binaries point of view there are no difference on the products.

If you compare the two sales sites it only differs on:
  • Personal: The ArcaOS Personal Edition is for individual users who will not be using it for business.
  • Commercial: The ArcaOS Commercial Edition is for business users and commercial enterprises.
And...
  • Personal: 6 months of technical support and updates included.
  • Commercial: 12 months of priority technical support and updates included.

You can read more details on the ArcaOS End User License Agreement.

Quote
The ArcaOS Personal Edition is for private individual users who will not be using it for business. ArcaOS Personal Edition includes six (6) months of updates and support. Each ArcaOS Personal Edition license allows one (1) Installed Copy.

The ArcaOS Commercial Edition is for business use and includes one (1) year of updates and priority support. If you are a business, require more than fifty (50) Installed Copies, or simply want priority support, then you need the ArcaOS Commercial Edition. The ArcaOS Commercial Edition license can allow any number of Installed Copies as specified by the Authorized Use in your PoE.

Programming / Re: OS/2 projects that need help?
« on: May 29, 2017, 11:29:02 pm »
Hi

I don't lead any development project and maybe someone needs your help, but if you let me suggest something maybe it will be interesting to know where do you want to start.

For example:
1) Drivers? : Drivers are (maybe) the most appreciated required software for the OS/2 community.  This kind of development will require you to check and learn more about the "IBM Driver Development Toolkit" and also know some kernel things.
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/List_of_Driver_Articles

2) Presentation Manager?: If you want to help on graphics applications, on OS/2 you need to work under the Presentation Manager API.
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/List_of_Presentation_Manager_Articles

3)Workplace Shell apps?: If you want to develop some Workplace Shell based application for the OS/2 desktop is also interesting, but maybe it will be better to first learn Presentation Manager and SOM before going into this area.

Applications / Re: Firefox 45.5 Install issues

Hi

This is just a friendly reminder, everybody has their own opinons and their preferences of how to use or interact with a personal computer. The user is free to choose how they want to work with OS/2 and the developer is also free to select what is his best way to produce software.

We already have the discussion about RPM/YUM vs WarpIn so many times. I don't think we should start over with it, but if someone think it is needs to be discussed please open a new thread.

On the other side I always dislike how some people uses lightly phrases like "you are spreading fake news", "you are suffering from blatant illusions", "you are dreaming in technicolor", "you belive in fairytales" or the simple statement in CAPS like "YOU ARE WRONG" without explaining anything. I think there are better ways to communicate with others without labeling the other party.

If you explained your reasons politely and the other party does not understand or not share your point of view just "agree to disagree".

Hi

I wrote this quick and simple article of using git.exe under eComStation: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Using_Git_under_eComStation
But to be honest I haven't used any ssh with it.

Applications / About Local Translations - Launchpad ?
« on: May 24, 2017, 10:50:18 pm »
Hi

Something that I found interesting on how to make local translations to Ubuntu is the web tool that they use.

The Launchpad site (https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/zesty/+lang/es) allows the community to translate lines of text on a very easy and collaborative way.

But I don't know if the Launchpad is open source and if on OS/2 we can have the same way to integrate the translations made by the community on the web to the OS.

Applications / Re: Visual FoxPro 3.0 on OS/2 Warp 4 and Arca OS
« on: May 24, 2017, 07:37:25 pm »
Hi Rick.

I think that the word "legal" may depend on how you choose to make that wrapper DLL.

If you grab the API documentation and create a DLL that behaves exactly the same as the API is documented with your own code, I think there will no legal issues.

But if you are grabbing a binary portion of the IBM's DLL to create your own, or if you are de-compiling (which sometimes it does not even work) an IBM binary it may not be legal.

What I suggest first is to start with the API documentation and see what specific parts of the  API do you need for your goal. Also, if it some Windows API, I think it will be interesting to see the Wine project and see what had been ported to Odin too, just to don't make any duplicated efforts.

Events / Re: Regarding: Lewis Rosenthal interview by Bryan Lunduke

Reference:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oXKMZ56R2o

Hi Sigurd

I also share your constructive comments and I may add that modern Wifi support is also critical for the platform.

The interview was great and it shows some of the good points of ArcaOS. But, talking about a different video, I liked that at Warpstock Europe Lewis set up the statement that "we are not stopping here" and talked about the next steps with ArcaOS 5.1.

So let's hope that next in line there are some driver that are needed for the platform. It seems that ArcaOS sales are going good (according to what Lewis told on the interview), which means that they can pay their IBM Agreement and reinvest in the future of the platform.

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS5 and VMPlayer12
« on: May 23, 2017, 02:51:59 pm »
Hi Sigurd.

That picture is super cool.  8)

Will it be ok to use them on the OS2World Wiki?

Do you think this "non-install issue on VMWare Player" should be some kind of limitation on the JFS boot driver?
Maybe it can be interesting to try to find out more about this issue and if it applies to open a ticket on Arca Noae's site. But if it is a VMWare Player limitation that's another story.

Hi Matt

Check Herwig's reply (Bitwise works) here - Firefox 45 Installation. There are two libraries that are on Netlabs experimental repo. We can put that repo on RPM/YUM or wait for monday or tuesday to be posted on the regular Netlabs repo.
