Title: RTL8211CL DRIVER

Hello

I recently had to upgrade my motherboard and it came with a built-in LAN that uses the RTL8211CL chipset, however, I have not been able to find a driver for it.

Does anyone know of a driver that works with that chip and where I can get it?

That is difficult to answer, when we don't know the PCI ID of the device. It should be something like 10EC:8168. You can find that information by running PCI.EXE. I would expect that the Multimac MMRE driver should support it. If not, post the information at the Arca Noae MANTIS site (I assume that you have a subscription), and ask for support.

I would suggest that it is always prudent to check the specs, before you purchase, and be sure that you know what will, and won't, be supported.

Thanks for replying Doug. I am using eCS 2.2 b2(?). ArcNoa is too big an investment at $150US, (nearly $200 Canadian).
It isn't a new motherboard, rather one that I came upon years back that was a convenient replacement.

PCI.exe does not yield any information on the device other than to say that it is an RTL chip. Perhaps that program is too old or is using an old database.

Okay, that probably means that the devices is supported, but we need to know what the PCI ID is.

It should tell you what the ID is. Post that section of the output. It may also help, if we knew what the motherboard is.

It should tell you what the ID is. Post that section of the output. It may also help, if we knew what the motherboard is.

I would have to copy that information by hand; I will take another look at it to see if there is anything pertinent.

The closest I can get to a working driver is the RTL8169. I get an IRQ detection error when it loads, but I have no problem pinging the relevant NIC, (I have two in the server).

There is a command that I have used in the past for the protocol.ini entry for that driver to get it to bypass IRQ 15. PCI says that the chip uses IRQ16. So I tried the line IRQ16OVR="YES" to see if that would work. That="no" heheh.
 I have no idea where I found that line to so many years ago. I have no idea if forcing the driver to use IRQ6 would help anyone, but that's a good place to start.

BTW, the line that I used in the past was "IRQ15OVR="no".

2. Good luck with that old driver Ben.  Realtek had bad habbit of releasing many chipset revisions under the same chipset ID. Resulting in older drivers no longer working.  You could consider buying an Arca Noae OS/2 and eCS drivers and subscription for 49 Dollars.

But first check If you have your PCI id from PCI.EXE you can see if the chipset is supported by the Multimac drivers:

Thanks for replying Roderick, but as I said, the PCI sniffer hardly shows anything on the chipset other than acknowledging the existence of it.
Also, I would have to type the info by hand... keep in  mind that the machine in question has no LAN access, (meaning Internet too).

I suspect that my pcidevs.txt is too old, (16 MAY 2013), to provide any data on it. I tried to find a later one, but I believe that they stopped updating it. Does anyone know where I can find a more recent version?

The Subsystem vendor number, (at least a partial one), is 10ECh
The Subsystem ID is 816910ECh

I had a look on the Arca Noae site and it does not specifically list that number.

I've attached two files I use on my system, both dated 2017, take a look at this stuff.

In the meantime, granted w/o net connection that's a PITA, but what can you fish out of the PCI output?

This device ID = 8169, the 10ECH is the vendor ID, is listed several times in the files I zipped up. But as others pointed out, it references to a number of different devices.

Okay, it is a 10EC:8169, which is used in many systems. The best driver is Multimac MMRE. The other alternative is the older Multimac R8169 driver (it is in eCS 2.2b2), but it doesn't work with every 10EC:8169. Do NOT use the older R8168 driver. It can leave the NIC in a state where the only way to get the interface turned back on, is a complete power off (pull the power cord, for a couple of minutes, and remove a battery if it is a laptop).

Interesting.

But, I have tried the R8169, (read up), driver that comes with eCS 2.2. If I could get it passed the IRQ detection stage I could probably get it functional. There are parameters that come with that driver, I just can't find them written down anywhere.

With respect to $75.00 for the AN driver pack, that's just too much for a NIC driver: for around the same price I could get a slightly used motherboard.

The unfortunate thing about this motherboard is that it only has one PCI slot and I need two NICs to make it work. If it had two slots then I could just disable the onboard NIC and use another NIC that is compatible with OS/2.

Also, I discovered what the "IRQ15OVR=yes/no" means, simply allowing the driver to use IRQ numbers over 15. I enabled that and now I do not get an IRQ Detection error on booting; alas, it still won't ping anything outside of the NIC... though I can ping the NIC itself... strange.
The Hardware Manager shows that it is using IRQ16.

Just in case anyone is wondering, (and don't know it already), the parameters are found in the *.NIF file in the\macs directory.
It is strange that they are not directly editable in the ''Network Adapters and Protocols" settings... though you can add them in there manually.

Now all that I have to do is to find out where things are failing and see if I can 'tweak' the NIC into life... assuming that is even doable with the RTL8169 driver that is.

Hi Ben

I have a system with an onboard  RTL8168 nic.

I found that it would work fine with the R8169 driver but I seem to recall that I had to install and use the nic in my Windows7 installation before it could be used in eCS2.1/2.2b2. Until then the eCS R8169 driver seemed to load OK during eCS boot but had no connectivity when the system was loaded. Might be worth trying if you have a Windows installation on that system.

Interesting, Pete.

I yanked the motherboard out of a working Windows 7 setup so anything that Windows would activate would be done by now.

Hmm... I was just wondering, does ANoae have an upgrade plan for old eCS users? If I could get the whole OS for $50 US, ($75 Can), as in previous OS/2 upgrades, it might be worthwhile to do so now. Does anyone know anything about that?

I never used parameters with R8169, and I used it with 9 different NICS (all different, even though all but one claimed to be a 10EC:8168, which is simply the on board version of the 10EC:8169). It is certainly not necessary to tell it that it is using an IRQ over 15.

It sounds like you may have got the NIC interface turned off, by using a bad driver (R8168 will do that). Running windows, or Linux, did not get it turned back on, for me. Turn the machine off, pull the plug for a couple of minutes, then plug it back in. The R8169 driver will probably work, although one of mine didn't (the newest one). It connected okay, but scrambled the data. The MMRE driver works very well, with all of them. The later versions of Multimac will use the MSI interrupt method, if the hardware supports that (most will).

Doug makes an excellent point...I have purchased the $49 US Drivers subscription for the past 3 yrs...money well spent. If anything, consider that their last release of SNAP video drivers finally put to bed the nasty SMP bug...I only wish they could fix the poor performance so that I could actually retire the original SciTech SNAP drivers.

I believe that the upgrade process is something that AN team is going to look at in the future, but for right now, no specific plans and/or dates have been released.

And ArcOS is not another OS but simply OS/2 Warp repackaged and updated in certain areas, but with many, many things untouched. I have nothing wrong with that and would buy an update if one is made available, but it is not available right now and I would like it if the topic of this thread were not shanghaied into a "let's all protect/sell the new branded OS/2" flavour please. OS/2 World has an unlimited number of new threads that can be made to accommodate that... most of which I would probably read.

Getting back to the topic, eCS 2.2 b2 tells me that the NVETH driver is the man so I am tinkering with that right now; Frankly, I don't have much hope for this working out though the motherboard is otherwise quite fast.

With respect to no parameters being used for RT8169 in Doug's circumstances in the past/present is meaningless. I used the parameter I posted years ago to great success and I used it again yesterday to eliminate the IRQ Detection Error, so there are obviously circumstances when such a thing is beneficial...

However, while there is only one PCI slot on this board there are two PCIEX1 slots there. Are there any supported NICs/drivers available with eCS that would work that anyone here is aware of?

Depending on the age of your motherboard and how much it depends on ACPI, it might be worth a test of disabling it by remming out the PSD=ACPI.PSD line in config.sys. This will force the driver to use a low IRQ and the older IRQ routing. Make sure you have a means of booting in case your system refuses to come up with no ACPI.

Whoah....c'mon man...you posted a question regarding the driver support for your NIC, what you got was actually a pretty good response as far as hands-on experience goes AND what your other options may be.

Quite frankly, in as small of a forum as we have here, you'd think someone like yourself who is being presented with various additional options (whatever these may be...heck, build your own driver with the 32-bit driver framework then???) would at least be inclined to say "thank you" in a slightly less "up yours" kind of a way...know what I mean???

No one is trying to steal your thread and convert it into a sales pitch for ANOS...but man, your take on the thread contributions sure make me feel like I wasted the time digging through my system to at least get you some additional info...heck, I hate to imagine what would have happened had I checked the AN NIC driver README for your specific NIC device ID, pretty good chance, by the sounds of it, that I'd be accused of getting commisions on the sales...LOL, yeah, seriously, that's how ridiculous it seems to me.

HUH? NVETH is for NVIDIA chipsets, not Realtek.

Since you don't want to spend a few dollars, the R8169 driver is your only choice, for a full function NIC driver (unless eCS 2.2b2 has an early copy of MMRE available - it might).

I have an Intel PCIe NIC. I don't have it installed, at the moment, so I don't know what the PCI ID is, but it says "INTEL(R) GIGABIT CT DESKTOP ADAPTER" on it. It has always worked with Multimac E1000e and better with Multimac E1000b (preferred). I can't speak for other cards, but anything that is listed as supported by Multimac should work.

The most simple solution for client systems that's still available would be a "SysKonnect SK-9E21D". Matching NDIS2 drivers can be downloaded from Hobbes.

I was the guy at Mensys who made the finishing touches on the eCS 2.2 beta 2 you have from December 2013.
Having seen how ArcaOS has evolved and if you look how much work they did.  The released new kernels, updated ACPI version with way more functionality. MSI Interrupt support, support for waay more NIC chipsets, update USB stack. Split window view in in Xworkplace updated and working. And a whole range of other updates to the OS.
ArcaOS is just eCS a mayor mayor overhaul and not just an OS/2 version with some items glued on the side...
They way I read what you have tied you make it sound like small update. Its not... To many systems sadly eCS 2.2 beta II now also fails on...

I gladd you got your NIC working. A Dutch OS/2 users asked me if he could get eCS 1.2 or 2.1 working on a new system he purchased 6 months ago. He gets TRAP screen when installing eCS 1.2 on a brand new system.
As time progress I think eCS 2.2 beta will also run out of guess. Because for example the USB 3.0 support is killing other OS/2 distributions off sadly... ArcaOS 5.02 has now been released to boot from a USB stick...

Anyway ArcaOS is a whole lot more then just some bits and pieces sticked to OS/2...

As I said earlier Roderick, I don't/didn't want to turn this thread into a "Hurrah for ArcaOS" thread.

I that know we are often guilty of reading only what we want to read and disregarding the rest, (it's merely a question of degree), but I always prefer to stick to topic. For if we do not then please tell me, what's the point of making a thread if everyone just comes in with their muddy boots on and stamps all over everything? It makes any potential benefit of this, (or any other thread for that matter), useless to anyone who is looking for help.

So, someone start a Hurrah of ArcaOs! thread for chrissake before someone here has an aneurism! It appears that in this forum witchy fingers are the devil's workshop and typing is a daily addiction... and everyone here who has ever been a teenager knows full well how painful blueballs can be. Please! Give them some release! Just not here... Hehehehe.

In fact, I think that Martin should make a dedicated forum category for people who want to type yet, have nothing to say...

Does this mean that SNAP now works OK on SMP systems? And could you please explain the comment about performance comment and original SciTech SNAP drivers?

Thanks, I have this one, but only could get it to work partly with an older mm driver. It worked once, but loading following data took about 100 times too long. BTW: I've also tried another recent Intel PCIe server NIC. I just can't find where I noticed their ids.

But good to know that a working Intel PCIe NIC exists somewhere.

Yes, SNAP is now SMP safe it seems - not had 1 instance of failing to boot to a working Desktop in over 6 months of use - but the SMP Safe SNAP is slower than the old not-SMP-Safe SNAP.

Thanks Pete...yup, it was a great move to fix the SMP hang, but with the performance being so bad I found that it just did not work for me. Strangely the ticket I logged has simply gone un-answered (https://mantis.arcanoae.com/view.php?id=1505 (https://mantis.arcanoae.com/view.php?id=1505)).

Thanks Pete...yup, it was a great move to fix the SMP hang, but with the performance being so bad I found that it just did not work for me. Strangely the ticket I logged has simply gone un-answered (https://mantis.arcanoae.com/view.php?id=1505 (https://mantis.arcanoae.com/view.php?id=1505)).

Seems it was an oversight. Your ticket has been answered now...
