Setup & Installation / Re: Panorama v Snap Video

Neil,

...SNAP seems slower, but it can turn off monitor power, so I like to use it to save power....

ATI X850 XT PE video card here, SNAP is about 30% faster than Panorama...the old (IBM) SNAP is actually faster then the AN one as well.

Given a recent motherboard with Intel HDA graphics, laptop or desktop, DIVE graphics will be quite a bit faster than an ATI video card old enough to have SNAP support.

Sometimes I can get SNAP to support other resolutions by installing Panorama, setting the resolution, then re installing SNAP. This is the case with Thinkpad T540p. SNAP seems slower, but it can turn off monitor power, so I like to use it to save power.

Applications / Re: WPTools error message

Works for me here, too. If a machine can boot OS/2, it has loaded PMWIN.DLL. What could happen that CheckINI would fail to load a DLL that is already in memory?

Anyone tried WPTools? It's quite powerful. But then apparently it has some very, very weird limitation.

The T540p works with external monitor with only a few weil-known issues. I think you have to select the external monitor in BIOS.

Applications / WPTools error message
« on: May 09, 2018, 10:20:21 pm »
I've got a client, and his INI files are likely messed up.

I asked him to run WPTools CheckINI, but he gets the error

SYS1804: The system cannot find the file PMWIN.

I'm thinking that just means PMWIN.DLL isn't in the libpath, but if PMWIN isn't in the libpath, how is OS/2 even running? So I don't really know what is going on.

I suspect it was done for ease of installation,

It is only needed if you are installing from a USB DVD drive. It is convenient, if you want to be able to use a USB DVD drive, after install (the line is already in CONFIG.SYS), but that adds the extra icon.

I like how it is done in ArcaOS. Most of my machines do not have any optical drive. They might revisit this decision now that we have a bootable USB stick for machines without optical drives.

Internet / Re: Firefox - 45.9.0 for OS/2 GA1.1...anyone...anyone???

Dave's build plays YouTube video here after I updated dependencies. It wouldn't run at all without "yum update all", and this is starting from all dependencies in place for bww latest Firefox.

bww Firefox never starts playing.

I think I'm running the -3 browser, but is there a way to show that this version is different than the previous version?

Help-About just says this is 45.9.0, just as the previous version did.

Setup & Installation / Re: RAM disk and temp folders...what else?

Pardon me for going off-topic a little bit.

Writing a good installer would supercharge the OS4 project. If I could have confidence that I could install OS4, and then uninstall it, I could be brave about trying it under various machines and tasks. I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling this way. I'd like to encourage the project, yet I have not got the time to invest to learn how it goes together.

It's not easy to write a good installer, and the skills have more to do with test engineering than software engineering. OS4 would be especially challenging because any error leaves the installation unable to boot. The target installations are diverse -- OS/2, eCS and ArcaOS.

To make a template, first create a Program Object with the features you want, then open the Properties, go to the icon tab and check the checkbox marked "Template."

I suppose you could have specified a USB cd-rom drive in your config.sys

I'm on the road, so I can't tell you which USB driver.

Hardware / Re: Time for a OS/2 box

While I like the idea of specifying specific hardware that works, what would that entail?

1. USB 2.0 hardware: Not really available in current chipsets, so that's some custom work. Arca Noae may soon have a better driver.
2. Very old WiFi: Our latest support is via GenMac for 802.11b, and even that has some issues. That's almost 15 years old.
3. BIOS: We're going to need BIOS support, and I'm hoping that can be our own custom CSM
4. Disk support: Don't show us GPT or disks larger than 2 TB.

And the market is complex. End users might buy hardware like this, but how would they even know it exists. Likewise, for any industrial users, would they even know to look. Also, most Industrial users want support for Microchannel, ISA and other interfaces that are long gone. If you take industrial users out of the picture, I'll stick with my prediction of 8 sold units.

I think it's good not to overestimate the size of the market for these machines. Can you have a machine built in china if your total run is going to be 8 computers?

Lots of rsync users here, but probably none are using SSH. Can you skip using SSH for now?
