Hardware / Re: Not a graphics card failure - but what happened?
« on: March 15, 2018, 11:53:20 pm »
Hi Pete,

It was just a possibility, remember we also have some network cards that do strange things but are quite happy with windows, in fact you need win to reset them.

My reason for considering dvd tools as a possible culprit is basedmore on what it doesn't do on my various systems - those based on ITX motherboards it doesn't see the dvd writer, on the mini ATX boards it doesn't finish writing a dvd.  Again that is my experience on my home built equipment so is neither a vote for or against dvd tools since it works for a lot of people.

I was talking to one of my old techs this evening who thought it would have been a good idea to have a look in \os2\drivers\snap to see if there was anything strange in there but since you have several systems on the same hardware that wouldn't show anything, at least I don't think so.

Hi Pete,

What graphics card is it?  I had something like that a couple of years ago where some malfunctioning program wrote to the graphics card and fixed a particular mode.  One of my technicians at the time fixed it by forcing it to VGA mode after that it worked again but we never trusted that card and dumped it a couple of months later.

As to what caused it, I would suspect some interaction with DVD Tools, at least from my experience using it (it generally didn't write a full dvd) - I get faster reliable results using cdrecord2.exe and dvddao.exe.  I may be biased in this because it might be hardware timing problems with dvd tools being more critical than dvddao.exe.

Networking / Samba Server
« on: March 15, 2018, 03:59:05 pm »
For some strange reason, it may be a senior moment, I am totally unable to add new users and/or groups to any of my samba installs.  It was bad enough that nothing would happen the first time I tried to use it until I discovered that I needed to hand produce a master.password file (something not mentioned in the readme.os2) one would assume that would be included in the 'Simple Samba Configuration Center' gui but it isn't.

Anyway, having passed that 'test' I got things up and running and has been since October of last year.  I did a new clean install of ArcaOS 5.0.2 and did the hand produce the master.password thing and got smbd.exe and nmbd.exe up and running BUT when trying to add users and groups via the 'Samba Users and Groups' gui I get an error (see screen grab) and SMBUSERS.err gives the following

Line 42 of _Login in SMBUSERS.VRM:
+++               Msg.Text = substr(loginLine, pos('NT_STATUS', loginLine));
*** Error 40 Incorrect call to routine
Line 51 of Main_Create in SMBUSERS.VRM:
+++         Call _Login;
Line 50 of Main in SMBUSERS.VRM:
+++       Call Main_Create;
Line 50 of Main in SMBUSERS.VRM:
+++     Interpret _VREEvent;

What is going on and is there a way to get round this problem because al long as this exists I am unable to connect to any of the shares (all machines give the same 'SYS0065: Network access is denied.' error message) which rather defeats the reason for using Samba.

Out of interest make a 'F:\home\download' directory and point the firefox downloads to that.  If it works everything is good.

I think the problem could be in the way the temp setting is handled.

Utilities / Re: CFGTool
« on: March 11, 2018, 10:19:07 pm »
Hi Ben,

CFGTool 1.3.0 runs here on everything from my ancient Warp 4 through WSeB to ArcaOS 5.0.2.

If this is the same machine you have had the other problems with I think you need to run the hard disk through the manufacturers disk diagnostic tools (the full version not the cut-down one) as it may have problems with not enough spare sectors to relocate flaky sections or there may be a firmware problem.

Hi Roderick,

The 5 hours was because I had to go out and I just left it running - that can happen when you have someone pounding on the door in a panic situation.

The version of ArcaOS that I was trying to install is 5.02 as is the install on the replacement disk.

The next tests will be with various settings for ACPI, including its complete removal.  I am even considering trying a disk with my standard CP2 and all fixes but with os2ahci added just to see what happens.

Another question that you appear to have more insight with.  Do you think it would be possible to get the os2ahci.add to work with the ASMedia ahci controller?  The os2ahci.add works very well with the AMD controller but has problems with the ASMedia controller (works in real mode, can read and boot from DVD but stops working the moment os2ahci takes over- the Linux ahci driver works with it without problems).

Welcome to the growing band of us with modern leading edge equipment that we can't install and run ArcaOS on.

You can try a new hard disk with ArcaOS already installed but be prepared for hangs part way through the config.sys (you need a file altf2on.$$$ in the root of the boot partition to see the config.sys loading)

Good luck.

863
All of that is irrelevant when it won't even get to that point with the installer.

As I said, the initial dos selector works but after pressing f10 to move on all that happens is the ArcaOS splash screen appears and that is it (I left it like that when I went to do something else, 5 hours later it was still doing nothing).

I now have a boot partition image from a working AMD Sempron 3850 APU (the younger brother of the Ryzen) install on a new Seagate 1TB FireCuda disk that has been checked and tested (the boot partition is 2 GB HPFS, other partitions are for utilities, programs, data etc.).

The next thing is to edit the config.sys (the disk connected to main PC with a SATA/USB adapter) as outlined by Roderick earlier to see if it will boot or even produce ant log files that might give any indication what is happening.

I assume it is not a good idea to open a ticket saying 'it doesn't install or boot' without some logs to back it up.

864
At the moment I haven't yet been able to get it to boot let alone produce a log file.

I will also admit I'm dot doing the testing full time as there are other things that are more urgent but I do have everything setup to make changing disks easy.  The more I look at it the more I am thinking the brand of the motherboard has a lot to do with success or failure (remember I am using Mini ITX boards and there isn't a wide range available).

865
Thank you OS4User, that was what I remembered but couldn't find again.

Also thanks Roderick.

Testing starts tomorrow.

Hi Roderick,

The hard disk I used for the test was from an ArcaOS 5.02 install on an AMD 3850 APU on an ASRock AM1H-ITX motherboard.
What I am trying to install on is a Ryzen 5 1600 on a Biostar X370GTN ITX motherboard and an AMD A10-9700 APU again on a Biostar X370GTN ITX board (I have a 'thing' about using ITX boards in small cases).

I did try remming out the driver and as you say it hangs a little later - thank goodness for SATA to USB adapters, they make editing systems on disks easy.

867
I am trying to get ArcaOS to install on a Ryzen based computer.  Yes, I know we don't have the usb 3 drivers yet but there are enough usb 2 ports for what I need.

So far all I can get to is the splash screen after the initial selection of keyboard etc. and it hangs there forever.

If I use a disk with a working ArcaOS install on it it starts to boot but then hangs with os2aspi showing (altf2on.$$$ in boot partition).

I remember someone said they had managed to do it but there were very few details given. I that person, or anyone else that has managed to get ArcaOS / OS/2 running on a Ryzen or A12 APU could post the details it would be most appreciated. Even suggestions to try to get past the hangs will be tried and reported on.

Hardware / Re: How to find or extract a Postscript printer driver?
« on: March 02, 2018, 11:14:16 pm »
I agree with Andreas regarding a PPD extracted from the windows driver package - they produce better output than the Linux ones, at least with my Brother colour laser network postscript printers.

I have tried both the win and linux PPD in side by side blind tests and left it for friends to decide which they liked best.  In all 15 cases they preferred the win based output.  It could be because the Linux version is designed for use with cups  whereas the win one is for direct printing.

A long shot but have you run CHECKINI.EXE  from wptools and CLEANINI.EXE to be certain that your OS2 ini files are clean and don't have any odd paths that might be causing the problem?

Programming / Re: Trying to build my First RPM Package
« on: February 27, 2018, 02:41:52 pm »
Hi Martin,

Please don't think I'm decrying you effort to find out how to build RPM files - learning something new is always good although at 78 I find that sometimes the old ways that still work are better.

There are points for and against all automated install systems the worst one being when the 'latest and greatest' kills the 'tried and tested' because the new updated a dll that the old required, that is when the 'fun' begins tracking down the problem.  At least with a zip file it is easy to see what is there, not so with an rpm on a standard OS/2 v4.52 install.

It is not just with the rpm packages that we have appearing for OS/2 it happens with Linux as well.  There it is a case of will the rpm that I have found work with the version of Linux I have, PCLinuxOS, or should I use the RHEL rpm or the SUSE rpm if there is one available?
