Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Re: Antivirus and ArcaOS
« on: March 08, 2023, 12:04:52 pm »
Thanks Lewis,
Unlike other websites, which blocked my access, in the case of 2rosenthals.com, they warned me (as you can see), but they let me download the files, in fact I have everything updated in ArcaOS.
Really from the beginning I thought it had to be a false alarm, but I think I did well to report it, in case it happens to anyone else and give the opportunity to clarify it
Greetings.

Thank you for your answers.
The OS2 community has always seemed to me to be made up of serious people, hence my doubts.
Bitdefender is my paid antivirus, purchased because of good references and I should trust it, but nothing is perfect.
The answers were enough to stop worrying.
Regards.

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Antivirus and ArcaOS
« on: February 28, 2023, 11:32:38 am »
Hello everyone:

Every time I try to access the ARCAOS yum repository, the host Windows antivirus, Bitdefender, warns me:

Accessed by: VirtualBoxVM.exe
Dangerous pages try to install software that can harm your device, collect personal information, or act without your consent."

Isn't that Lewis Rosenthal's page?

Also when I try to download or access the page of the creator of Filestar2, file manager recommended in the OS/2 Wiki:

"A malware-type threat was found at http://jaread.net/downloads/filestar/fs_30500.zip"
or
"A malware-type threat was found at http://jaread.net/software/pages/filestar.html
We have blocked this dangerous page to protect you."

They block me and won't let me download it.

Although they may be false alarms, I don't know.
There is talk about the absence of viruses in OS/2, it´s probably true, but I think that the reputation on the network should be improved.

For your informartion.

Greetings to all.

Setup & Installation / Re: Old DOS Program on ArcaOS VDM
« on: February 27, 2023, 09:25:31 am »
The VDM does not emulate a specific CPU. It uses the CPU instructions at CPU level.
Check the DOS memory settings (Right mouse click on the DOS Icon).
Extended memory by default is setup to 2 MB, so that is the first thing you can modify.
For a DOS extender modidy experiment with 3 DPMI_ settings.

Roderick
Thanks Roderick, I've been changing for a long time, the VDM memory settings, both in the DOS session and in the one on floppy A (with MSDOS 6.22) and I haven't been able to get it to work.
I'll use Dosbox2 which seems to be more compatible, although I regret this.
Greetings.

Setup & Installation / Re: Old DOS Program on ArcaOS VDM

Hi Ramon

I don't know which program it is, my guesses are:

A) Just in case test it also with DOSBox to see what happens.
B) This program uses "Ergo OS386 DOS extender" which is very unknown to me (The most known are DOS/4G and DOS/4GW). Does the program has a different .exe for the extender? Do you think it can be possible to get a different version of just the extender on the internet and see if the statistics program still run with it?
C) Looking around I also found "RPROMEM.EXE" (DOS utility to test system memory), which also uses "Ergo OS386 DOS extender" and gives the same error. I think it ends the "B" idea since it seems that the program binary and extender are on the same exe. Maybe these ones will not run on DOS VDM.

By the way, "RPROMEM.EXE" crashed DOSBox here. (Vogons site related thread here)

Regards
Hi Martin, thanks.
It seems that the extender is built into the executable.
I just installed Dosbox2 and the program works fine with the default options.
It also works fine in a VirtualBox MSDOs 6.22 session, but VirtualBox does not support data exchange or GuestAdditions (It´s not handy for me)
Since the programs runs over the same C drive that AOS, I would find a VDM session more useful for data management.
But, it seems that it is not going to be and I will use DosBox2, which is fast and wonderful.
Thank you very much for all.
Regards.

Thanks.
Regards.

Not all DOS extenders are compatible with OS/2, you could try playing with the DOS settings, mostly memory related. The VDM does support i386
This, https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=10960 might help getting it running in DOSBox

Thanks Dave, I've been playing with the VDM DOS settings without success.
The program works right first time in Dosbox, so I'll use it.

Setup & Installation / Old DOS Program on ArcaOS VDM
« on: February 24, 2023, 08:23:09 pm »
Hi all:
I would be interested to use a statistics program designed for MS-DOS 3.0 or later in an ArcaOS VDM session. But when I run it. it gives me this error.

   "OS386 requires 80386 processor
    Kernel cannot continue"

Is VDM an emulation of a 286 processor?
Could the DOS parameters be modified to make it work?
I've already tried a real MS-DOS 6.22 session on a floppy, but since it takes DOS/OS2 session parameters, we're the same.
This program has the peculiarity that it must not use EMM386.SYS but rather HIMEM.SYS as the extended memory controller.

This program needs:
- IBM PC 486 or 386 or compatible
- DOS 3.2 or later
- Min 4MB extended RAM (not expanded) The program takes 3 MB
- Mathematics co-processor
- Graphic adapter CGA,EGA,VGA or MCGA or one that emulates any of these (16 colors recommended)

This is the DOS version of The Unscrambler by Camo
Someone knows?
Thanks.

Hi/2.

Workaround is:

1. Disable mouse integration on Input - Mouse integration menu after Win-OS2 full screen session
2. Grab mouse by clicking OS/2 VM window
3. Press host key to release mouse from OS/2 VM window after Win-OS2 full screen session quit
4. Enable mouse integration on Input - Mouse integration menu

Hi:
Perfect, solved
Although I had it figured out with an rough solution, this allows me to use the latest version of the driver with all its advantages.
I hope Martin will now solve the problem.
This forum is useful, thanks for the contribution.
Regards.

Hello Martin:
If I install a Vboxmouse.sys driver dated after version 5.1.38 (I tried several, including the last 7.0.6), exactly the error you explain occurs.
I tried several of date before that version and they did not give me error.
It can be significant, although it can also be associated with another parameter that I ignored.
I do not remember changing anything especially. I keep with REM the AMOUSE.SYS and USBMOUSE.SYS lines in CONFIG.SYS (VMOUSE.SYS is not modified)
I am using the maximum resolution 1920x1080 16Mc, with GRADD, according to the recommendations of the forum,
Panorama gives the same error with the same criteria, I have also tried it.
I hope that it would be useful to someone.
Greetings.

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Re: Mouse single-click in WPS
« on: February 23, 2023, 09:18:23 am »
Hi Ramon

If you have a 3 button mouse you may want to experiment with Mappings ->  Page 6 -> MB3 Click Action

The Help states: If "Double click" is selected, then all MB3 clicks will be converted to mouse-button-1 double clicks. This allows you, for example, to single-click on any Desktop object with button 3 to have the object opened.

It does work - but if you have MB3 setup to open a new tab in a browser you get the original page and the new tab both loading the link you clicked. To get around this use Ctrl-Click (MB1) instead of MB3.

Regards

Pete

Right, fixed, Pete.
It works as you say using the middle mouse button. But I have to disable it before to open the browser on the host, because I'm using VirtualBox.
Although somewhat elaborate, it's okay, thanks. :) :) :)

Thanks Martin, I have already seen that it is not possible to do it using the system.
Maybe someone who knows some third party program...

I have also answered you to another old post:
"Win-OS2 full screen session- Mouse moves choppy / Half screen"
Read it, it may be of interest.

Thanks Joop, but this solution works fine on WinOS2 fullscreen of ArcaOS, using VirtualBox. Do it and check it out for yourself.
Currently I am not having any problem with ArcaOS on Virtual Box, although I have used the physical machine and I have had many problems with the windowed sessions of DOS and WinOS2.
Regards.

Thanks Dave, but there is no such option in mappings tab.
Let's see if someone knows any trick or third-party programs.

Is it possible to open files and folders in ArcaOS with a single mouse click?
How?
For me is more handy.
Thanks.

Hello Martin, nice to meet you, I'm new.
I had the same problem and found out that the last working vboxmouse.sys file was version 5.1.38 (09-05-2018, 40Kb).
I fix it using that driver and no apparent malfunction with VB7.0
I assume you know, but the old versions of VirtualBox OS2Additions can be downloaded here:
https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/
For what it's worth.
Regards.

By the way, the problem is the same using Snap, Panorama or Gradd, I have tried it.
