Storage / Re: NAS and OS/2?
« on: November 02, 2014, 09:39:30 am »
It depends whether or not you need EA's on the samba share. If you do, using an 'off the shelf' NAS may not give you the customisation you need.

If you need EA support, you might be better buying something like a HP N40L or N54L Microserver, and installing Ubuntu Server on it - by installing webmin, you end up with something not hard to configure, but still have the power of a full server OS.

... is there a Chance to get an updated UNIAUD in general?
But about to UNIAUD, he told that needs to clean the source code of it. His goal is to make it in a way that it will be easy on the future to add portions of code of newer devices fast (this is what I understood) to make a driver that can be easily updated.   He said that it is 20% complete, but he can not say exactly when it is going to have it complete.

I'll be very interested to see how this progresses. There are definite opportunities to share code on the linux api implementation side of things between multimac and uniaud, however my personal opinion (happy to be wrong) is that the alsa core is not so trivial to update.

I think there are also some opportunities in uniaud16 (which implements the mmpm interface)

Hi Sigurd

My slides + audio are now on youtube - http://youtu.be/Vw6bhDH8Oig

thanks, listened to it the last night - it is really great to get so much bakcground information.

Because of my english knowledge I was not able to understand the plans/Problems with UNIAUD in the of your Video. As I am playing aorund with the Sony Vaio Pro 13 with Intel HDA Audio - what do you think - is there a Chance to get an updated UNIAUD in general?

Thanks again and keep going your excellent work!

I have no specific plans any time soon to work on Uniaud. My comments in the presentation were just to warn that maintenance is getting more difficult due to:
a) The use of Open Watcom on OS/2 vs GCC on *nix - The ALSA code uses some gcc extensions which don't work in OW so necessitate source changes
b) The fact that the ALSA code is no longer available as a standalone download, it's now part of the kernel source.

Hope this helps clarify. I hadn't really planned to talk about future plans for Uniaud, but one thing lead to another whilst I was talking :)

Cheers,

Paul

Applications / Re: CUPS Discussion

Thanks to David M. I got CUPS 2.0.0 to print a test page. Some critical information seems to be missing from the packages (or I never found it). It seems that you need to use a command to create a Symlink for Ghostscript (I say what?). I don't know about other users, but I never even heard about needing such a thing. Those who use Linux, or are programmers, may know about the ln command, but I suspect that the average OS/2 user doesn't know about it.

Then perhaps you shouldhave read readme.cups-filters.os2 which was included in the package:
"A symlink also needs to exist to gsos2.exe, located in /cups/bin
ie:
ln -s /gs/gs8.71/bin/gsos2.exe /cups/bin/gs.exe"

Gotta say - I'm not sure how to interpret the above..... in particular the section I've highlighted in italics..............................

I do notice that you (Paul), sometimes take your time about investigating problems.

I shake my head at this comment.....

I started to write more but thought better of it.

Speaking only for myself, I appreciate all of the software you compile and take the time to listen to feedback on, even if I don't use a lot of it I know it contributes to keeping many people using OS/2.

I certainly would not expect you to do what you do unless you are happy to do it, in your own spare time, as it happens. If others want things to be simpler in installing, I see no reason that they cant spend some time to learn and give back to our community by creating, or helping to create installers and or documentation.

Thanks Martin and Ian, I appreciate the comments.

There is now a CUPS version 2.0.0, that I haven't managed to get going (close, but not quite there yet). It doesn't, yet, have a WarpIn installer, and there seem to be some bugs that haven't been worked out yet. It is one of Paul Smedley's projects, and he has the same 24 hour days that the rest of us are stuck with. Paul does so many things for the OS/2 world, that he tends to be a little slow at getting everything done, that people demand.

Gotta say - I'm not sure how to interpret the above..... in particular the section I've highlighted in italics..............................

Hi All,

I haven't had an opportunity yet to dust off the T60 and test this
locally, but I made a built of wpa_supplicant 2.3

The cross platform changelog is at
http://w1.fi/cgit/hostap/plain/wpa_supplicant/ChangeLog

Download available from
http://smedley.id.au/tmp/wpa_supplicant-2.3-os2-20141012.zip

Feedback appreciated before I upload this to my site.

Cheers,

Paul

Feedback appreciated (also posted to the ecups-dev mailing list)

« on: October 09, 2014, 02:27:47 am »
The problem is now that there are some bugs in Image Magick and I need help on this side. I'm using IM as back-end.

I  already asked Paul but he has no time to fix these issues. So my question is: can anybody help out and get some things in Image Magick running? I have no skills in C development and I'm busy enough to work on the GUI and WPS integration.

Sorry I'd forgotten about this. I should have some time over the next few days. Cna you open a ticket at mantis.smedley.id.au describing the issues? That's a much better place than my inbox :)

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Re: timeouts when posting
« on: October 07, 2014, 10:11:46 am »
Don't think it's a SeaMonkey problem but next time it happens I'll try Firefox.

My guess would be a PHP setting relating to session timeouts. I had a similar issue with my mantis site.

What is the current setting for session.gc_maxlifetime ?

The default according to http://community.sitepoint.com/t/php-sessions-keep-expiring-too-early/21183 is 24 minutes.

Dave - any idea how idea how long you'd been composing the post for when it timed out?

Utilities / Re: Convert INF to PDF
« on: September 30, 2014, 01:11:54 am »
Hi

I want to recover all the OS/2 Toolkit documents for EDM/2, since the links to "http://cyberkinetica.homeunix.net" are now dead.

So, I want to ask permission to IBM to republish, but first I need to convert INF files to PDF format, because nobody can read INF file (with the exception of us). Plus I think that PDF will be a better format to put on the web since it can be indexed by search engines, etc.

What do you recommend me to convert the INF OS/2 Toolkit documents to PDF? or does someone has already converted (maybe I missed that)?

I tried INF2HTML which is good, but I need to go to the next step and convert it to PDF.

Regards

Does http://www.warpspeed.com.au/book/books.htm offer the same information that was at http://cyberkinetica.homeunix.net ?

Cheers,

Paul
