Applications / Panorama Maximum Resolution
« on: December 20, 2023, 12:28:59 am »
While we are on this topic I have a question.  What is the maximum resolution that can be displayed by panorama?  At the moment I am running 1920 x 1200 on a 28 inch monitor.  I would like to go to 2560 x 1600 on a 30 inch monitor.  Is that possible?

Utilities / hardware information
« on: August 08, 2023, 11:19:31 pm »
Do we have a program that gives ALL the hardware information especially the make and model of the motherboard?  I am looking for something like the windows Speccy program (see attachment taken from my win data logger box).  Hardware explorer does most things but for some reason does not give the motherboard info.

Networking / Changing subnet on network
« on: May 23, 2023, 10:29:12 am »
I have a problem.
I have just moved to fibre from my internet supplier which is great but the the DHCP server in the freebox is set for 192.168.1.xxx and my old network is/was set for 192.168.0.xxx.  The change over on my Linux boxes was simple, just fill out a new profile and I was back on air - not so simple for OS/2 or ArcaOS. I spent a couple of hours tracking down every instance where the old subnet was mentioned and physically changing the refference.

Now the question, is there a simple way to do this change over on OS/2 and ArcaOS?  If so please let me in on the secret.

Hardware / getting ArcaOS to remember video resolution
« on: May 04, 2023, 05:08:22 am »
Is it possible to get ArcaOS to remember video resolution if it is started without the monitor connected?

I have three computers connected to a Samsung S24E659 monitor (1920x1200) via a HDMI KVM switch.  I had to replace my old KVM switch (don't ask but it involved the cat and the dog) that used to auto sense any of the computers being switched on.  The new switch does not do that but the linux computers remember the resolution and not the ArcaOS one, it reverts to 800x600 which means I need to reset it to 1920x1200, reboot and then rearrange the screen icons back to where I have them normally which is a pain, hence my asking this question.
I wouldn't mind if it switched to 1920x1080, that I could live with.

Setup & Installation / ArcaOS 5.1
« on: April 12, 2023, 11:53:16 pm »
Why would I want ArcaOS 5.1 if the 5.07 version I have does all that I want - it even runs on my Ryzen third generation processor and motherboard.

It would have to have some impressive improvements to make me want to change and if so what are they?

Change my mind.

I have a need for a very small portable computer that will run ArcaOS.  I saw this at a friend's place but he is running windows rubbish and won't change so I thought I'd ask for the forum members views.

Hardware / panorama not remembering monotor resolution
« on: December 01, 2022, 08:11:49 pm »
I have a very annoying problem.  If I boot the computer without the monitor being on panorama reverts to something like 640 x 480 which is stupid on my 1920 x 1200 28 inch monitor.
Is there a way to make panorama remember the monitor resolution?  I have no problems like this with Linux on the same monitor via a kvm switch.

Storage / HPFS and JFS
« on: November 20, 2022, 09:38:31 pm »
A friend asked me a question to which I don't have an answer and I was wondering if anyone here could help me.

Why do we use JPS formatted partitions when is anything goes wrong there is no way of recovering that partition?  With HPFS we might lose the odd file but not the whole partition.  My experience is that you had better have a full up to date backup and hope for the best with a JFS partition.

General Discussion / I have a problem
« on: July 18, 2022, 08:02:42 pm »
My problem should be simple to solve but it isn't.

Some information, I have a data logger that I access once a month and it is causing the problem.  The software for the data logger is windows only and I have a dedicated windows 7 computer for it.  What I want to do is add another hard disk to my Ryzen third gen processor based ArcaOS computer and scrap the win 7 box.

The problem is what do I use to dual boot the Ryzen box, especially then Air-boot only causes an error message on any of my 1920x1200 monitors? The error shown is a moving box saying 'incorrect video resolution', so there is no way I can select the win7 install.

Any thoughts would be most helpful.

Setup & Installation / Quick question about boot manager
« on: January 07, 2022, 09:02:19 pm »
I want to setup a replacement computer system with multiple operating systems on it.

I have learned that the boot manager that comes with ArcaOS is useless on any of my AMD Ryzen based systems - it does not display any of the menus so it is impossible to select an OS.

Before I start this project I would like to know if anyone is using the old OS/2 boot manager in such a situation.  I know the primary partition limitations and since I only want three operating systems on this new system (Boot Manager, OS/2(ArcaOS), Linux Mint and Win7).  There will be several hard disks - the number will depend on how well the system will work.

The reason for this is because I am fedup with having 5 or more computers running at the same time all feeding into a KVM switch and two monitors, also on a HHDMI switch.

Any information and comments?  Thanks in advance.

Has someone overloaded the hobbes site?  I keep on getting a 'failure to make secure connection' message.

Utilities / QT5 Runtime
« on: April 21, 2021, 06:28:08 pm »
Maybe I am not looking in the right place but I can't find the QT5 runtime package.

I assume there has to be one, we do have one for QT4.   Since most developers want to show their ability and would have assembled one as soon as possible if only to show off what they can do  BUT the question is where is it hiding.

Don't tell me that I have to download a load of programming junk that I will never use just to get bits from each package that might eventually allow me to put together a QT5 runtime, that is just stupidity.

Rant over.  Having spent the last few hours looking and finding a blank wall I am beginning to wonder just where OS/2 is going.

Hardware / USB 3 and AMD Ryzen third gen processors.
« on: March 06, 2021, 06:06:57 pm »
This is more of an observation but... On my MSI B550 motherboard with a Ryzen 3 third gen processor I have noticed an anomaly now that I have been able to switch off the SMT, hyperthreading 'feature' on the MB.

If I plug in a USB stick and start to copy anything to or from it, and I try to use the USB trackball, or a mouse, the pointer freezes in place and it requires a CAD restart to get motion back.

Now I am wondering if this is a problem with our USB 3 driver not being able to do more than one thing at once or do I have to look for something else in the UEFI bios.

Any ideas?

Applications / VirtualBox 5.0.51 networking
« on: February 04, 2021, 04:15:28 pm »
I know this might be an old question but I can't remember how to do it.  I have just installed VBox 5.0.51 on my OS/2 ArcaOS test machine ind installed win XP.  That works but...  When I try to connect to any of my NAS boxes on the local network (192.168.0.xxx) they are not seen, indeed nothing on the local network is seen since VBox appears to think it is on 10.0.2.xxx subnet.

Can anyone remember how to change that 10.xxx.xxx.xxx subnet to a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx subnet?  Otherwise I will have to revert an old computer back to XP rather than dumping it to make more room.

Applications / PMMail questions.
« on: January 17, 2021, 08:09:18 pm »
Since yahoo mail have been messing about and now no longer forward mail to other accounts I have been looking for a simple way to see the odd e-mail that arrives in my yahoo account.

The problem is the yahoo account requires secure transfer which my old version of PMMail does not have but I think it is built in in the new versions of PMMail.  Working on the assumption that it was I downloaded the WPI file to my test machine, renamed the mail directory to something else and installed the new PMMail.  I then discovered that I had to have aspell installed as well, got that installed  and started reading the manual.

Maybe I need new glasses for my 80 year old eyes because I can't find any information about setting up a secure transfer.  I tried setting up the necessary account for pop.mail.yahoo.com on port 995 but it does not work (this is the test account required at startup).

Now the question is: is this secure transfer only available on the paid for version of PMMail but not on the try out version.  If that is the case why isn't that fact mentioned especially since that is the very thing I need to try out to see if it will do what I want.  Or have I missed some vital process in the install or setup?
