Applications / DLLs not found in libpath
« on: October 19, 2018, 09:46:16 am »
Checking some of the programs found in ArcaOS 5.03 or that I install and use, I noticed some would say that a dll was not found in libpath when tested with PMDLL.  I do not know how important that is for the  program to work properly.  To fix this, I just make another directory called copied_dlls on the drive root, added it to the libpath statement in my config.sys, and copied these dlls to it and the errors PMDLL showed went away.

Dragtext:
drgtxt39.dll
dtinit39.dll

fm3dll.dll

XWP 1.0.12 GA

I plan to continue to contribute.  It is nice to have a working browser for now.  I agree with you that a newer more up to date browser is needed.

I have been testing using this version that came with ArcaOS 5.03 and must say that I am impressed.  This is the most stable release I have tried.  It has no problem playing youtube videos and the browser itself is very responsive.  This is by far the best I have used.  Although not quite as fast as its Windows version, it comes close.

I must also say that ArcaOS 5.03 is the most stable version yet.  I can only applaud the team and their effort and work so far.

Applications / Re: A button to set window to ideal size
« on: October 17, 2018, 01:31:22 am »
Hi David,

Close, but not quite the functionality I am suggesting. Instead what I'm looking for is that upon Desktop initialization the XPager functionality automatically put the window into a pre-assigned virtual Desktop screen. In that particular screen the window should then open using the "ideal size" setting, as defined by the user.

The way SkyScraper accomplished this was by having you setup the full virtual Desktop environment across multiple desktops and essentially do a "Save As" on all the locations (you could have multiple profiles). That way upon re-boot (or actually anytime) you could simply select a different virtual Desktop profile (mapping/layout) and existing applications would automatically get re-positioned to their "parent" virtual Desktops.

I think where you went with the idea allows for more functionality, and it certainly would accomplish what I am looking to do, although I personally am not looking for so much more functionality.

I found the program Megadesk on eCSoft/2

https://ecsoft2.org/megadesk-desktop-expander

https://ecsoft2.org/system/files/repository/megads.zip

After experimenting, I see what you are talking about.   In its options, it has the options
Restore Main State
Restore Numbered State
Redraw all Screens
Capture lost screens
Change Medadesk
Erase numbered State
Save Numbered State
Save Main State

It saves the states to its own megadesk.ini file.

After playing with it some, I agree it is nice to save states if one so chooses when starting it.  I tested it with Xpager disabled.  As near as I can tell it works fine with Xpager disabled.  However, this was not an in depth test.

I then tried it with XPager enabled.  It appears I can operate with three rooms.  However, if I go for a fourth room, it appears to get confused. Other than this, I can see no detriment to my system.  I just close Megadesk to bring everything back to normal.   Basically, XPager does most of what it does, except for the saving of states (rooms).

a little bit better after a system reboot, even if still not really running a level of same Firefox in other systems.
But this is encouraging after all

Mauro

It doesn't and it won't.  The present code has become too burdensome for the few programmers working on the OS/2 port.  That is why QT5 is being ported so a new and more responsive browser and other internet tools can be built.   The age of the machine you are using determines how fast FF does things.   You may have to continue to do some things in Windows or Linux until the work is complete on QT5.  I have a Lenovo thinkpad 430S and FF is very responsive although as you have said, it is still not at the level of FF in other systems.

Hi Mauro, welcome back.
The latest Firefox is available here, https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/releases with 45.9 the latest and some considering 38.8 the most stable.

My experience is that if you have a dated computer, version 38.8 is the way to go.  If you have  a computer that is only a few years old, the latest version of FireFox is the way to go.  Version 38.8 does not play youtube and other videos well, if at all.  Version 45.9.0 does, but if the machine is extremely old it may not work well at all.

Hardware / Re: The best ThinkPad models for running ArcaOS?
« on: October 13, 2018, 10:42:48 pm »
I ended up getting a T410s and a T430... The T430 gives a great Youtube performance with a quad core cpu that ArcaOS sees as 4 cpus. T410s would be a little lighter machine and  It was possible to disable USB3 from the BIOS and all the USB ports operate in USB2 mode.

Thank you Tuure.  I did not realize by disabling USB 3 support in my notebook bios that it would enable me to use my USB 2 devices in my USB 3 ports on my Thinkpad T430S.  Now I have 3 functioning USB 2 ports.

I looked at the old xit program, http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/wps/xit26.zip thinking it might have the capability. It doesn't but it does show some possibilities for what a program can add to the titlebar. Be nice if the source was available.
[/quote]

I use XIT on another bootable ArcaOS partition.  The titlebar enhancement preference page is really the only page needed.  I like the idea of adding more functionality to the titlebar and selecting the location to place it.  Basically, all its other functions on its other  preference pages  have been already been added by XWP or other programs.  The titlebar functions would be a great addition.  I use the titlebar enhancements only with none of its other system enhancements selected to keep from conflicting with programs.  I also like the idea of putting the date and time anywhere on the desktop.  XIT works good if only its titlebar enhancements are used when usig ArcaOS..

Thanks for all the responses.

1.Xpager is a great enhancement that makes OS/2, eCS, and ArcaOS a more productive operating system.  It makes multitasking easier.  It is one of the first things I set up after installing ArcaOS.  Next, is FM/2 for my file management.  If I remember correctly, Mark Kimes originally listed it as a replacement for the workplace shell if one so chose.  Because of this, this file manger can do just about everything.

Now when building my Icons, I usually have FM/2 open multiple times in two to three virtualy desktops.  In another virtually desktop, I may have PMView open,  and in another virtual desktop, the icon editor. If I need more than one instance of icon editor, FM/2 allows me to open multiple instances of the Icon editor.  The result would be
FM/2 in the first desktop, PMView open in the second, Icon editor open in the third, FM/2 open in the fourth using it to open icon editor again, and firefox in my fifth virtual desktop.

Others are right.  An user can set each program window to the desire size by pressing Shift and dragging the side and/corner of the open window to the desired size.  This works good for many, but not all programs. QEdit is one that the shift key dragging does not work.  It resize the window correctly, but does not remember the position of the window once it is resized.

That titlebar button that FM/2 is good for it.  It gives one a lot of desktop real estate for the file manager without having to go to full screen by the click of a button.

Maybe what I should have stated is that a button needs to be added when the program gets confused and has part in one of a program window in one virtual desktop and the other part of its window in another.  Instead of having to drag and resize the window, one click of the button would move it to that virtual desktop without any effort required.

Dariusz, if I understand you correctly would like to use a virtual desktop along with  work group folders.  On start up, one work group folder would open in one assigned virtual desktop and another work group folder would open in another assigned virtual desktop  on start up.

A feature that might be usefully if added would be a titlebar enhancement.

This feature is found in FM/2.  FM/2 adds a fourth title bar  button.  This feature is useful when using multiple desktops or is one does not want full screen. The button sets the FM/2 window to an ideal size.  When opening programs in multiple desktops, sometimes a program opens in two desktops.   If this happens when using FM/2, just click the button and it is moved and ideally sized in that desktop.  Or programmers could add this feature to their programs.  FM/2 source is found at Netlabs.  It could possible be a feature added to XWP.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T430S which works Great with ArcaOS 5.02 or 5.03.

It has an
Intel (R) i5-3320M CPU@2.6HZ 2.60GHz which is a 64 bit processor.
8.0 G B of RAM
ACPI x86-based PC
Intel(R) HD Graphic 4000
Matshita DVD-RAM UJ8E2
Standard SATA AHCI Controller
Ricoh PCIe SD/MMC Host Controller
Intel(R)82579LM Gigabit Network Connection
Intel (R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N-6205
Intel Display Audio.
1 USB 2 port in the back
2 USB 3 ports (1 in back and 1 port on the left side)
I use a 4 port USB 2 Hub presently to run my mouse, my USB drives and a USB drive.

I bought the machine refurbished and the internal DVD stuck closed after a while. I paid a little over $200 dollars for it and spent another $22 dollars for the USB drive.

My WIFI is presently not supported, so I use  an ethernet cable.

The machine is fast and responsive.

I took Windows 10 off and installed Windows 8.1 and boot between Windows and the two ArcaOS partitions that I have installed.

The laptop CPU does run a little hot at around 150 degrees F but as near as I can tell, it has not hurt this laptop.  I have been using it for around 1 year.

Hopefully your new kernel will eventually do away with the SIQ.

I am messing with a new glass prototype folder.  Uploaded are the templates.

Also uploaded 7 test icons.

If you're interested in something like that and you have some base OS/2 Presentation Manager programming skills, I would be happy to help you setup a template app and give you some cues on the algorithms where required.

Hi Rick

I appreciate the offer, but you have enough on your plate to handle.  Unfortunately, I am not a programmer.  I thought about it at one time may years ago, but realized without help, I would never be good.  In addition to lack of knowledge and skill, I am a poor typist.  That is why I started dabbing with icons, ptrs, and bmps.  I have had to teach myself over time.  Fortunately, no typing was involved.  It is just my way of contributing back to the OS/2 community.

Best of luck on the goals you hope to achieve.
