Hard disk 2: 12 sides, 512 cylinders, 9 sectors per track = 27 MB
Drive cache/bus transfer rate: Disk read error.
Data transfer rate on cylinder 0   : Disk read error.
Data transfer rate on cylinder 510 : Disk read error.
CPU usage by full speed disk transfers: Disk read error.
Average latency time: Disk read error.
Average data access time: Disk read error.
Multithreaded disk I/O (4 threads):
SYS1808:
The process has stopped.  The software diagnostic
code (exception code) is  009B.

epm: {99}[I:\Download\sysutil\diskio]
Hard disk 1 is a relative old SSD: A (partly faulty) Kingston
SKC 300 S37A (240 GB).
Haven't tried with the faster Samsung 860 EVO (500 GB) so far.

Hard disk 2 doesn't exist.

This seems to give better values for SSDs than Sysbench.

Good idea. I just remember that many netlabs.org apps are not on Hobbes. Another group is Paul's apps and tools. In the past we had extra files from Japanese sites. Now there are Russian sites that host apps not on Hobbes, e.g. Glassman's Object REXX.

Nothing specific so far, but there are many.

Networking / Re: WIFI on Dell Latitude D610
« on: August 11, 2022, 01:16:55 pm »
Put the wireless on interface lan1 and it may work. Apparently you try to set both the cabled and the wireless nodes to lan0.

Don't remember where to configure that, but that's the usual configuration for LAN and WiFi simultaneously. Posting the not-working \mptn\bin\setup.cmd would have put more light on this.

It is possible to completely disable a previous configuration in setup.cmd, including lan0 and lan1, without a boot. To do that, execute:

Code: [Select]
dhcpmon -t
route -f
ifconfig lan0 down
ifconfig lan0 delete
ifconfig lan1 down
ifconfig lan1 delete

After that, you can verify that ...

... dhcpmon is terminated by starting a process viewer, e.g. top.

... the default route is deleted.
Code: [Select]
route -n get default

... both interfaces are set to default values:
Code: [Select]
ifconfig lan0
ifconfig lan1

Just compare the output to that from before.

But 8068:4220 is also contained in the original GeMac package 2.20. pcklist.txt has:
Code: [Select]
genmac220_intel.wpi:908:GenMac Wrapper Intel 2200 Wlan [8086:4220]
So the original package should match. Interesting would be the content of ?:\ibmcom\lantran.log and ?:\mptn\bin\setup.cmd, which are contained in "testlog generic".

Hardware / Re: Displayport?
« on: August 06, 2022, 10:36:07 pm »
Yes, I also often use the Power "button" of the LCD monitor, as I did for the CRT (can't really remember). The screen saver app works here with VGA, HDMI, DVI connectors. Haven't tried with a DVI - DP converter, due to lack of an adapter. The on-board jacks are VGA, HDMI and DVI, the monitor has them all: VGA, Composite,  HDMI, DVI, DP.

All these on-board connectors work with the screen saver (only tried blank screen). Haven't tested another machine with DP, but may follow in far future.

I had the LCD for a long time connected via VGA (was another machine with a Matrox), but then have also tried other interfaces. It took a while, but now I think the blurry display of an analog connection looks worse. Of course, monitor settings have to be adapted. I have both Brightness and esp. Contrast set to lower values.

But why limit to a VIO editor? Several editors for PM exist.

About VIO: FTE is really fast, even in its PM mode.

Good points, Dave. I support Martin's changes and had myself to adapt Hobbes and other links multiple times. Unfortunately links are not static. Note that Ian not only hosts files from everywhere, but also several old mirrored servers, including Hobbes from 2020.

TeX and especially LaTeX can be seen in competition to other "wordprocessing" systems. TeX is a typesetting system. It's more DTP than wordprocessing. But even the actual DTP programs all have problems to reach the quality of LaTeX texts.

But "wp" is probably the best solution for it. BTW: It's about finding files, nothing else. While the Hobbes files probably show their age, I had always used the CTAN servers in favor of it. You'll find also the aged OS/2 software there. The newest ones that we have are the latest VTeX 8.44.2 and teTeX 3.0. Both are extremely outdated. More easy to use is probably OS2TeX, but also older and less complete. And it's (abandoned?) shareware.

EmTeX is a completely outdated package for DOS. IIRC its apps were compiled with emx in family mode, at least in earlier days. Note the "em" (Eberhard Mattes) prefix for both. Later versions include a PM DVI "previewer". It was the best we had while the actual LaTeX version was 2.09. In the meantime there were many tries to bring LaTeX to 3.0, but it still sticks at version 2e, since ages. In the times where 2e was relesed, the extension eTeX for Kuth's ingenious TeX came out. It's still not a full requirement for LaTeX 2e, but as I've just read, it's almost done.

For OS/2 we have a recent system for editing and viewing: TeXstudio (ecsoft2) and TeXStudio (Wikipedia), ported with Qt. (The screenshot on the German page is the best, but there exist also e.g. Spanish, English and Ukrainian.) But all of them require a TeX (LaTeX) subsystem. That is probably far superior to other editing solutions, like e.g. EPM (or NEPMD) with TeX Front End and e.g. Ghostscript as previewer.

While creating texts is obviously still possible, newer ones use more packages, where we don't have a recent OS/2 port for. E.g. Beamer uses PGF/TikZ and the versions that Beamer requires are not contained in our outdated VTeX. I had first seen Beamer slides by Adrian and have then copied that for a WSE presentation. But (unfortunately?) in my current job I don't have a need for it anymore.

Hi Martin,

let me put some light on this at first: The base group for both should be tex (usually written as TeX). TeXInfo is one dialect and LaTeX is another. Both base on TeX, where TeXInfo is - probably due to its age - only sightly changed. TeXInfo is completely TeX and has nothing to do with LaTeX.

LaTeX is broadly used, not only for manuals. It is a very powerful macro package for TeX and is far more easy to use. It receives continues updates for both its kernel and its numerous additional macro packages. While the height of LaTeX has probably passed, the typesetting quality of its output is still by far not reached by anything else.

At least all LaTeX tools should be placed in a LaTeX subdir, not TeX. The same applies for TeXInfo, while there are probably fewer tools.

More to come, after I hd a look at that.

General Discussion / Re: It's a sad day...
« on: July 20, 2022, 05:02:39 pm »
Find... it goes... nowhere. Even if I limit it to the root (uncheck the Search Subdis checkbox button) it sits there forever.
I even power on the original box, and that works. :(
So has anyone any suggestions about what could be going wrong?
The problem is probably in the inis. Run checkini, followed by cleanini. For the future, run that regularly. More than 3 blocks in os2sys.ini cause more and more WPS errors. Read the docs for the options. For checkini, a WPS restart suffices. For cleanini, it's important to reboot instead of just restart the WPS to avoid moved desktop icons if you have a toolbar configured to reduce the desktop.

I use these options for checkini: /C /Y:2
For cleanini, I use only the /multipass /resp:cleanini.rsp options, with cleanini.rsp:
Code: [Select]
[Parameters]
# either specify parameters here or in the call to cleanini
#/c /delall /restart
/c /delall

[Handles]
# accepts also UNC names
# action can also be ignore instead of del

Additionally, you can run XWP's XFix from XWP's Panic menu and remove at least the invalid handles:
Actions -> Find invalid files, Sort -> Status. Better read the docs in advance. For the hidden nowhere folder(s), Steven has valuable tools on his side. In a few cases it helps to delete all contained template objects after cleaning the inis. They will be recreated on reboot.

To keep the WPS intact (esp. templates), avoid to browse WPS archives and desktops of other OS/2 installations with the WPS. Use a file manager instead. E.g. FM/2 looks similar to the WPS, has more features and doesn't create unwanted handles.

Do regular WPS backups, every x days. XWP does that via setting.

Yes, it's probably not possible at all to run Warp 4.52 on almost modern hardware.

The same applies even for the latest eCS 2.2 beta 2. While eCS 2.2 beta 2 still works on some systems, version 2.1 doesn't. (At least I haven't found one.)

Warp 4.52 with newer drivers is not Warp 4.52. In most cases you need a (the newer the more recent) ACPI driver to run it at all.

One example: The ThinkPad T60 needs newer drivers to work stable. It's 15 years old. Most of Warp 4.52 is from even older times, so one should use it with old hardware only. Additionally ArcaOS patches the kernel to work around the wrong WPS behavior for multiple dots in a filename. I don't want to miss that anymore.

A regular MBR system works fine in UEFI mode
Thanks for the info, that's new for me.

The Mantis link works, but you need to log in first.

The bug tracker entry is about an alternate DOS video driver for OS/2. David wrote that the driver works on some ThinkPads. There's no guarantee that it works.

ArcaOS 5.1 improves the situation in UEFI mode. It uses the improved DOS support of it. The disadvantage is that with UEFI you have to wipe the hard disk and older tools do not work. They continue to work for the MBR area within an UEFI partition. OS/2 doesn't see the UEFI partitions. Another disadvantage is that 5.1 is not released yet.

Another option is to use the 'Xview' view of a folder. Subfolders started from its tree open in the same window. You can make that default via System Setup -> Workplace Shell, "Folder Views" tab, Default folder view: (o) Xview

About rc:

In my programming env I have the 32-bit version installed:
Code: [Select]
epm: {0}[G:\dev\netlabs\nepmd\trunk] rc /?
IBM RC (Resource Compiler) Version 5.00.007 Jan 30 2003

That's the one from the toolkit 4.5, also recommended for the Mozilla project long times ago. It needs an extended DPATH as well for to find its .msg file. Other 32-bit versions are extremely buggy.

I still have the 16-bit \OS2\RC.EXE in PATH, but that comes after the programming env. At any rate the toolkit versions of all files must be found first.
