Like I said the first question on this thread is to post the working setting for Java programs.
How hard is that just post them.
Because in this way its far from simple, the options are too numerous, how hard is that? Use a batch or cmd file. You can find it on my homepage http://joopn.home.xs4all.nl/os2ecs/ecs6e.htm and that's a start to begin with.

Sorry, thought that 5.5.1 was a bug fix or so on 5.5. Tried 6.9.1 with modified command files from 5.0, but I get same error "SYS1065: The input line is too long".

If you set the memory wide enough then lots of programs work. This is done in the script with -Xmx512m, but not all Java programs do need so much. So with more Java programs next to each other you could run into problems. Best way is to set nothing for a start, ie the standard of 64m is used. If the program complaints you give it a little more and so on. Not all Java programs do start with a -jar, some needs to be started with -cp. In that case you have to add a few things more. Also there is no option for program parameters and there is no option for recording bug messages (I didn't see it in the REXX file, but may be I overlooked it). My standard batch is updated in a minute or so, don't see the advantage of dragging and dropping as it is an one time investment.

I have netbeans 5 running. Thought I had to feed the Java home directory in the same way as the programs. Wrong!
I edited the file "netbeans.conf" in the directory "\netbeans\etc".  I changed the line "#netbeans_jdkhome="/path/to/jdk"" into "netbeans_jdkhome="Q:\JAVA160"" and that did the trick, I had ""Q:\JAVA160\BIN", but that's wrong, because in the process the \BIN directory is added.
Deleted version 5, unzipped version 5.5.1. Edited the file "netbeans.conf" in the same way. But running gives the error "SYS1065: The input line is too long." after the line "Q:\netbeans\platform6\lib" in the command window. I did start with "netbeans.cmd".

I think you present it too simple. Lots of Java programs need extra Java parameters or program parameters or need a specific Java version. I can click on the command file in FC/2 and it will be started, so no difference there. There are only a few programs which can be started with java -jar program.jar. The only thing I have to do is to change the drive and directory to the new program. Alter the line where the program is started with the right java parameters and program parameters. Also I can include options for a report for finding out what was going wrong.
But I don't want to make a war about it, as OS/2 users we have almost endless options for running a program, we tend to forget that.

Thanks for the tip Greggory. The only complaint so far is that it can't find Java. For the first cmd file you can fix it with --jdkhome statement, but within this command file a second is called and that one is complaining with the same message. Have to figure out how to solve that puzzle. Had input the lines

set path=q:\JAVA160\bin
set BEGINLIBPATH=q:\JAVA160\bin
set CLASSPATH=
set JAVA_HOME=
set SWING_HOME=

This works in my command files for starting Java programs, but in this case REXX doesn't like it. So I have to study a little more ;-)

Downloaded netbeans-5_5_1.zip. This distribution still have OS/2 stuff for installing and using. Lets see, if that work we always can try to trick a higher verion of netbeans.

I downloaded 6.9.1, but according specs our implementation of OpenJDK is not up to it. Our version is too low. Nevertheless I wanted to try. All they can come up with is Windows, all kinds of flavors of Linux and the Mac. For the independent stuff go to the bin directory and launch program something.exe. I did that, but its a Windows program. That's it, they didn't even took the liberty to say how to proceed if that doesn't work. Going through the Linux sh file it seems not too difficult to do it without installer. Only its a puzzle and the sh is almost not readable. Independent seems for them so much as another distribution of Linux.

I have some sources for Java programs which where developed in netbeans. I want to install netbeans, but what version (of course one for Java 6)? Are there different versions for OpenJDK and Sun's Java? There are lot of sources  available from programs which don't want to run in our implementation of OpenJDK.

Tried to install Joeffice. Linux as above, no way. Mac as above, but I don't get that far, the installer doesn't recognize the space on my harddrive. It complains of not enough space for the 69Mb, while there is room for 4G. Can't overcome this.

Why going this difficult way? I use cmd files. In this way I can use every Java version which is available to OS/2. Its no problem to start programs with Java 1.4.2 or Java 6 version 5 if the program in question demands a specific version. Also program specific options are easily added.

Create a new profile by starting firefox.exe -profilemanager and test with new profile.
Makes only a new directory with a new name and some files which are the same. Have to copy my data in it which was a real pain with 17 and as stated no result in focus. If there is nothing below your cursor you will get the chosen new link. But if there is something below on the page it will get that link instead of the one in your list.

Here is a simple applet to measure shared memory. Run it and note if it gets low such as 10MBs (it varies when things get unstable, I currently have 187MBs free)
Thanks, I currently have 166Mbs free.

No, it's the same program.  It started out as a native OS/2 app and I actually bought it.  Then the author started developing it for java.  Doesn't look like anything has been added since the OS/2 version, except the version number. :)

Go back one step on your url and it'll show the OS/2 Version
Had it already on disk and installed. So much programs for OS/2  ;). Okay, put them together on screen with the question find the difference. You can handle the map in any way on the OS/2 version with the bars. Had to do that because both didn't showed me the same picture, while place(city) and time are the same. If you mark deep sky objects you get them all in the OS/2 version, with the Java version you have more options with magnitude. In the OS/2 version you have to deal with the installed fonts. The fonts in the Java are a little better. Found a bug with fonts in OS/2 version, not all can be set to the options given in the window (menu). In the Java version you can show the complete solar system, did not find that in the OS/2 version. And yes, not much difference, we do live too short to see major differences in the maps, apart from that its all following its orbit. If so, that would be spectacular.

Hello Sam,
I don't think we talk same program. This is the link http://home.comcast.net/~nightvision/nvj.html and I used the option "Users of other operating systems, and those who prefer manual installation, can click here (2.9MB). (Download to a clean directory, unzip, and use a web browser to follow the directions in nvj.html). "
Joop

Has the Night Vision for Java been developed past what the OS/2 Version did?  Last I checked there didn't seem to be any improvements over the OS/2 Version.  It's been a few years since I looked at it though.  I really enjoyed the program and found it very helpful when I did use it.
