Hardware / Re: Has anyone attempted to try a Raspberry PI PC wiht ArcaOS?
« on: November 02, 2020, 03:21:51 am »
I went ahead and got a Raspberry PI 4 with 8 Gig of RAM, a 256 Gig SD card for $170 for the cumputer, canakit with case, power supply and cables.  It runs Ubuntu Mate which is more usable than the default Rasparian Linux.  It is about the size of a deck of cards.  I have an Apache webserver wtih PHP and MySQL database server.

While it cannot run VirtualBox or an X86 OS, it can SSH to a box that does have VirtualBox where I can start virtual machines from the Raspberry PI and then use Remote Desktop to run the VMs.  I had been doing this with an old laptop runing ArcaOS and using RDP client to connect and that worked pretty well but that laptop was pretty old and the screen size was too small.

I am also working on a Perl program that will read the various XML files for VirtualBox and use a text based interface to start and stop virtual machines through an SSH session.  The 64bit version of Midnight Commander also works pretty well within an SSH session on a remote Windows 10 64bit box.

I will be posting my adventures with this at https://oscollector.wordpress.com/

Cheers,
Dave

These are all great suggestions for me to investigate.  Thanks.

I have been using QPutty on my WD MyBook NAS storage device and QPutty has been working on that box.  QPutty to Windows has been giving me "expected key exchange group packet from server" and I searched on that error and the suggestion was to modify the order of the Key Exchange Algorithm selection policy" which I rearranged but that did not seem to do it.

Just for kicks, I did an SSH from my ArcaOS box to the WD NAS box and then did an SSH from the NAS to Windows.  That does let me use VIM and see what I am doing, and cls does work too.  So trying EMX SSH or figuring out how to get the keys swapped between the two might do it.

I will keep poking around and I will post what I find.

After doing a bit of research I found there are several ssh_term files for .bsd, .linux, .orig, .os2, .sun, .vt100 but I guess there should be one for Windows which define the terminal emulation of the server (I presume) and key mappings.  I tried doing ssh -tc <filename> user@host and then entered the password.  I can log in but when I attempt to clear the screen, the cursor jumps to the top and leaves all the text there.

I did install VIM editor which does work except for the fact that the text that was there before is still there so unreadable and I think this has to do with selecting the correct terminal emulation file.

This is still useful since I written some command scripts to start and stop Virtual Box VMs as well as checking to see if I still have any of my VMs running by typing "tasklist /fi "imagename eq VBoxHeadless.exe"  which returns with any headless VM sessions I may have running.

I have been looking for a ssh_term.os2 file to use with OpenSSH that comes with ArcaOS.

I have a Windows 10 box with 32 Gig of RAM and my collection of 70 or so VirtualBox VMs.  I am able to ssh from ArcaOS using OpenSSH to the Windows box and run some command scripts to start headless VMs and then use the ArcaOS FreeRDP client to connect to the headless VM.  This works pretty well.

One thing that is annoying is the terminal emulation isn't working well.  Is there a terminal emulation file that would allow me to clear the screen correctly and then use VIM within the SSH session?

Thanks,
Dave

Applications / Re: WarpIN: Exception on Main thread

The Warpin installer from the CD fixed the issue.  Thanks for letting me know the path.

Has anyone tried loading ArcaOS on a Raspberry PI?  I suppose it would need to be a 32 bit processor.  It  could be that some hardware components would not work but would be interesting to try.

Lewis advised me to try out Warpin 1.0.23 from the ArcaOS 5.0.4 CD - Worked INSTANTLY. - Even without reboot.

I looked around on the 5.0.4 install disk and the only think WarpIn related seems to be a command line version.  i\Is that the version you were talking about?

Thanks

Storage / WinOS2 hangs on File Manager and a FAT32 drive
« on: April 29, 2020, 02:30:35 am »
I have noticed that the File Manager on WinOS2 on ArcaOS 5.0.2 hangs and I could not figure out why.  I have never seen this issue before but I began to wonder if the reason was the size of the drive (12 Gig - not big by today's standards) but it only hangs when using WinOS2 File Manger.  Opening documents from WinOS2 Applications does not hang.

Today I thought I would hide that FAT32 drive and then try to open the file manager and no hang.

Has anyone seen that?

I set up the FAT32 drive and it is the 3rd partition with WinXP first with 50 Gig, then ArcaOS (JFS) with 14 Gig then Fat32 at 12 Gig.

thanks

Hardware / Anyone know of an IDE CD driver for OS2 2.1?
« on: January 23, 2019, 02:55:49 am »
I have a collection of many operating systems running on Virtual Box and I recently created a VM with OS2 2.1 but there appears to be no IDE CD driver.  I checked Hobbes and found something that said OS2 V2 located at (/pub/os2/system/drivers/storage/ibmide12062003.zip) so I will check this out but wondered if anyone knows of an IDE CD driver?

Thanks,
Dave

I have Virtual box on one PC that has 60 guests machines including Warp 3 with Ethernet.

If you have MPTS you can unzip the floppy drive  from NetworkDriver.zip and mount that from your Warp 3 guest and use MTPS to install the dirver.

For years I have attempted to connect to Windows 7 and 10 using the SMB/CIFS client in eCS with no luck. COTS Linux based network drives have worked.

Each machine is in the same workgroup and I have a common host list on each machine and the alias' do resolve for all other computers I have on the network.

When I tried this with Arca OS 5.0, it still did not connect which was disappointing, then I tried using the IP Address of the windows box and it worked.

I don't know why using the machine name works for other boxes except the Windows 10 one, the other names resolve just fine.  I thought I would share this since it works and it may not be a solution people think of when trying to connect.

ArcaOS does install on Virtual PC 5.1 by Connectix.

Networking does work but UNIAUD did not work and the installer installs UNIAUD even if Sound Blaster is selected.

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS installation
« on: May 29, 2017, 08:21:27 pm »
There seem to be issues with the Audio driver with the install.  At first I used the default option which was UNIAUD on a box I had installed eCS 2.2 and UNIAUD did work.  I later tried to install in MS Virtual PC and got the same error.  I also noticed that there is no way to change the driver easily so after finding out what driver worked for VPC (was Sound Blaster driver) so when I selected that driver (the one that eCS says works on VMs) the installer ignored what I selected and still installed UNIAUD.

Seems like a bug in the installer.

It would be nice if a untility could be added to the package mangaer to download and allow changes to sound drivers.
