Assuming you had the means to design a computer from the motherboard up, what components would your system have?  Would you bother with a 64 bit processor or more than 4 G of ram?  What sound and video hardware would you use?

I'm wondering (fantasizing) if it is plausable to design an SBC or FPGA specifically to run OS/2 (and other "legacy" systems).  Amiga seems to be able to pull this sort of stuff off; I'm asking myself if we can do the same.

General Discussion / OS/2 in VirtualBox
« on: February 16, 2020, 07:34:12 am »
HI!  Well, I've been experimenting with OS/2 4.5 in Virtualbox (for Linux) for a few months now.  Native OS/2 apps that aren't dependent on DIVE seem to work okay.  DOS and Win 3.1 apps that don't have sound or heavy graphic are also fine (if not slow), but the sound in any of the VDMs is horrible.  It's scratchy, and often cuts out before the sound finishes playing, which is disappointing for me. No MIDI at all.  I'm using FTP to bring files in and out of the virtual machine, or using virtual CD images.  Man, that is a pain in the butt. I was hoping that I'd be able to use my OS/2 virtual machine as a reliable DOS multitasking environment, but so far that hasn't worked out.

I've tried loading OS 4.5 to run natively on a Dell Dimension 610. It loads and runs, but starting a DOS or WIN session crashes it.

I'm probably going to hold out for AN 5.1.  It  would be great if it ran well in a KVM-QEMU session, but I'm not holding my breath.

Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Restructuring the forum catagories?

I know this might be a lot of work, but could we have sub forums for DOS, WINDOWS, and OS/2 in the APPLICATION and SETUP forums?

I currently have a problem regarding my WINOS2 sessions reading "0 KBYTES" available.  I imagine this is do to my virtual disk being too large.  I'm sure that I'm not the only person who's had this problem, but I can't for the life of me find any posting of it on the forum.  My search terms, varying permutations of WINOS2 , Disk, too large, no disk space, didn't really turn up anything useful.

To my point:  It might be useful if we had some permanent pages on the top of the forum lists that answer frequently asked questions that pertain to the forum.  That way folks like me wouldn't have to keep asking the same asinine questions to the forum members.

P.S.  How do you fix the 0kbyte disk problem?

Thanks!

Hi! So I'm trying to play Iron Helix in a Win-OS2 session, but it requires  256 colors.  Is there a way of reducing the colors available for a given win-os2 instance?  I seem to remember being able to do this, but I haven't been using OS/2 consistently for 15 years.

Thanks!

Applications / Arca Noae package manager install problems
« on: December 02, 2019, 07:03:32 pm »
Hello all!
I'm setting up a new VM for OS/2 and I'm trying to instal ANPM so that I can get Samba up and running.  Unfortunately, the YUM installation never finishes.  I get to the screen where the config.sys has been changed.and after I confirm that I get a SYS3170 error....an exception...REXXAPI.DLL.

Any thoughts?

Setup & Installation / Getting files in and out of OS/2 on virtualbox
« on: February 11, 2019, 08:29:00 am »
Greetings!
I'm reacquainting myself with OS/2 (V 4.5) via Virtualbox on my Mint Linux computer. While I had hoped to set it up for programming and some DOS work, it's usefulness is limited by my inability to put files on or take them off.  I can't access printers, usb drives, any files on the host system, and navigator is virtually unusable.  How have others worked around this problem?
