Hardware / Trying to get Sound in VMWare to run - help appriciated
« on: August 31, 2022, 01:32:29 pm »
During the last three years I assembled two Retro-PC:

1.) AMD DX2/80MHz CPU, 64 MB RAM, 420MB HDD - running OS/2 Warp 3 (a perfect clone of my first PC 1995)
2.) IBM 6x86 MX 300MHz CPU; ASUS TX97-E Board, ESS1868 Sound, 2GB HDD, 256MB RAM, Matrox G450 PCI 32MB Graphic - the perfect combination for OS/2 Warp 4

Regarding modern hardware I am going to move from Bare Metal inside a VM.

VMWare PRO is my choice, I do like it (for some reason I can not really explain) more than Virtualbox.

I wrote some years ago about my experience with OS/2 and ArcaOS inside VMware Pro, wich have been really almost perfect! Since someone wrote a mouse "addition" for VMware.

The ONLY hardware I am missing is Sound. I was not able to get it to work.

You can read about my attempts in this forum here: https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,1378.msg13125.html#msg13125

You can read my question in the VMWare Forum in 2017 here: https://communities.vmware.com/t5/VMware-Workstation-Pro/No-Soundblaster-in-VM-Ware-Workstation-12/td-p/918140

You can read my Experience with the Mousesupport (= Additions) here (German): https://www.os2.org/viewtopic.php?t=3083

No luck so far.

I do not open a Arca Bug tracker ticket because my Subscription ended already and I am not going to prolongue it and because it is a problem not only for ArcaOS but also eCS and OS/2.

Help is appriciated!

I really do know, what you mean, Paul  :'(

The day we buy a dog we do know the time to say good bye will come, sooner or later. But once that day comes, it is really hard.

Life goes on, remembering the good times we had with him makes things easier.

And the prospect that there may be someone new who will never replace the previous one, but who can open a new chapter.

Argos, forever in our hearts!

Thank you very much, superb!

And yes, for me it does sound better than with previous versions!

Thank You!!

Sigurd, my friend:

Hi Lewis, I still can not figure out whether or not this formulation is meant to be sarcastic or ironic in this context. I hope not. (That's what I mean when writing "english is not my mothertongue")

Yes, it's probably not possible at all to run Warp 4.52 on almost modern hardware.

That's a myth.

It depends on what you want to do or have. For sure it is easier to use ArcaOS for a fresh install than try to install "blank" Warp 4.52

But it is even much easier to install a pre build clone with DFSEE. And there is no difference between Warp 4.52 and ArcaOS when using this method, I am practising this method for years now.

With this method I am even able to install my Warp 4.52 clone on hardware, that is not installable with the latest ARcaOS USB Stick.

The work, that has to be done first, once you want to use this way, is to build the clone. That is in fact not that hard.

Once every two or three years I build a new Warp 4.52 from scratch.

The main steps are:

- Installing WSeB (The same goes for MCP 4.52, even a Warp 4 FP15 can be pimped up this way!)from DVD on my Packard Bell Easynote E5155 Intel Centrino based Laptop (with inbuild DVD where WSeB DVDs can boot from) on a 2GB Partition "C:"
- Apply the latest WSEB Fixpacs
- Apply AirbootMananger, QSINIT, VXRexx, WarpIN, Xworkplace, DFSEE and the ZIP File viewer from Alex Taylor (i.e.)
- Apply the ArcaOS Software Subscription drivers

-> Now I have got a working Clone that I can copy to any modern hardware, that still meets BIOS and so on requirements. The clone has ususally a size of 700MB. And, even if not interesting for the majority of you, it is in German.

Later on, once you copied the Clone with DFSEE for Windows on the partition you like, you can easily change the size of the partition and stretch the clone and adjust it to the new size, ususally I use 16GB.

I then install the applications I like to use, like Open Office 4.1.11, avoiding YUM/RPM or hat FOC thing. I do not have a "DLL hell" though.

And this way OS/2 still looks like, feels like, works like OS/2.

Once I am fine with the bigger installation I just clone this as well. So this clone already ran on an Thinkpad T480, with those memory limitations though.

I will demonstrate this at the User meeting in Cologne, if it is wanted.

Yes, I know, in the future there will be UEFI and GPT support that will not be available for Warp 4.52 as a driver supplement.

But this will make no difference to me, as on "real modern hardware" (later than 2016) there will still be the problem with the memory (preventing to use the new Browser and other "bigger" Applications in a stable way), no WLAN, no Bluetooth, no.... that I (!) (I can only repeat once again: I speak for myself) prefer to use Virtualbox or VMWare on this hardware. I would recommend VMWare for this, but I am still not able to get sound to work inside this virtualisation, otherwise it is perfect!

With this virtualisation I can even use Warp 3 or 4 and use all the attached hardware, bluetooth, wlan and so on, so there is no need for ArcaOS.

The attached picture shows my clone 4.52 system native on the Thinkpad X250 "peacefull" alongside Windows 8.1. and ArcaOS 5.0.7.

All the best.

Hi Lewis,

thanks for your words, I know that you are usually do not have the time to answer in a forum because you invest it in the work on ArcaOS.

Though I try to speak english for about 50 Years now, I still can not express my thougths in the same way as I am able to do this in my mother tongue, German.

What I worte is what Thomas Müller and me think about the current situation and what we concluded from this regarding organizing an event like we did.

It is as allways our personal view, in this case here I do now only speak for myself.

We just summed up what did happen to our personal situation regarding OS/2. As I wrote we did not take anything personal. We just looked from our point of view: what is the current situation, what would we have expected or wished to be it as of today.

I made it clear not only above but allways when I wrote about ArcaOS / ArcaNoae that I am not interested in nor in the position to make a judgement about the work that is going on or not at ArcaNoae. I am not entitled to that.

We looked from what we know and what we can have access to today. The things I mentioned above are things we would like to have had, may be "exaggerated expectiations" from both of us.

But the situation is for us the way it is.

It was a pleasure for us to organize the meetings, it was allways a great time! We are and have been allways gratefull that attenders took part even from far destinations like Austria or Holland, for some the journey to come took more time then the time we could spent together. That was a great honour for us.

So, we - Thomas Müller and me - both have a clue without knowing exactly how much work you and your team are investing in ArcaOS and the big milestones you already mastered (USB 3, ACPI ect. etc.) and you will master.

I wish you all the best, most - like to all the others here in the forums - I wish that all of you stay healthy, and in a secure and peacefull place!

Sigurd

Hi,

Thomas Müller and me would like to inform, that the User Meeting in Cologne this year will be the last one we are going to organize.

Reasons for this are:

- The number of participants decreases due to the understandable general circumstances (Corona, Community getting older)

- that ArcaNoae ultimately no longer has any major interest in the remaining "private/end users". Neither a version 5.1 has been released, nor a German translation, nor WLAN drivers, nor would there be without the work of Paul Smedley, Wim Brul, Lars Erdmann etc. (to name just a few and please forgive those who we have not named here have) sound support or webcam drivers etc. for OS/2 - eCS - ArcaOS on "modern hardware"

- This is not - as allways in the past and now - to blame ArcaNoae, it is just the way it is. We don't take it personally or feel offended, quite the opposite.

Be that as it may: We would be happy to receive feedback and as many participants as possible, and we will try to find a nice conclusion to our relaxed series of events one way or the other!

Many thanks to everyone who has supported us so wonderfully over the past 10 years with their contributions, suggestions, criticism and participation!
We will savor it one last time to the full!

Games / Re: DOS VDM - USB and Game port Gamepad support

Hi Mark,

Congratulations with your upcoming birthday. I celebrated mine last Saturday with my family. Clicking my picture reveals my new age.

Quote
Just installed your new gamepad driver set (gamepad-20220511) and have ran into a problem in DOSBOX in Wolfenstein.

Start-up is fine and runs through the start-up screens (3) as per normal, but then the game immediately shows the messages for ending or continuing the program, where the response Y or N is required. Typing N simply goes to an alternate version of the same shutdown challenge. Typing Y ends the program.
When I implemented the missing functions I made a mistake. This resulted into all 4 buttons being signalled as being pressed on startup. Fixed now.

Quote
Hat functions on the Thrustmaster joysticks still not being recognized under DOSBOX
Perhaps I made another mistake. I did some experimenting and failed to change some values back the way these were before. Try the attached version.

Like before you need to copy *.sym and *.sys files to \OS2\MDOS and copy TRC00E8.TFF to \OS2\SYSTEM\TRACE and then reboot your system.

Happy birthday,

Wim.

Happy birthday to All of you as well! Wim I celebrated my 56 birthday last saturday as well... :D  That is really funny! :)

Condolences, Martin! I hope you can find your way to deal with this, together with your family! Take all the time you need!

Sorry for using my mothertongue, but I do not know how to translate it in a perfect way.

Hi Remy

we have not decided wether we will record the meeting on video or not. We will discuss a live stream as well, but Thomas and me are not experts in this case, we will have a look at this even though.

Please give us more information on the travel topic. I do not understand what you exactly mean, sorry for this, I have to apologize.
I guess you - if at all - would travel from France to Germany and I do not see any restrictions regarding this. Do you have a link for me where I can get further details? Thank you in Advance!!

Hi,

Thomas Müller and I paid for the meeting today. This ensures that it will actually take place in Cologne. Everyone who wants to come is welcome! A message to Thomas or me in advance of a planned participation would be nice and important. However, this can also be done at very short notice, there is no fixed date for a commitment. Cancellations are also possible at any time, since the premises etc. are already booked. If a room is required in the Cologne Riehl Youth Hostel, we recommend that you do this as soon as possible. For further inquiries, we are at your disposal. Thanks very much!

Hardware / OS/2 Warp running on Thinkpad 25 (former: ARcaOS 5.03)
« on: November 19, 2021, 10:38:15 am »
Hi Martin,

for the notes an info update for this Laptop:

- uniaud works with Pauls latest UNIAUD
- USB 3.0 works with ArcaNoae Drivers
- NVMe supported with ArcaNoae Drivers

ArcaOS 5.06 installation via USB Stick possible, one has to wipe the ssd though.
Secureboot has to be deactivated, UEFI has to be switched to Legacy

Problems remaining:

- No WLAN support (already gave hope up on this topic)
- Memory Problem (still only 1.2 GB of the 32GB RAM; as far as I understand this problem can not be fixed with OS/2)

Events / Usermeeting Cologne 2021 brief summary and 2022 already scheduled!
« on: November 08, 2021, 03:37:06 pm »
Here is a brief summary of what has happened during the last weekend where we had the 8th OS/2 User meeting in Cologne. Infact we - Thomas Müller and me - have been due to the raising Covid Numbers a bit afraid as if there will be audience at all.

The event took place as every year before at the Youth hostel Jugendherberge Köln Riehl, in Cologne on Saturday, the 6th of November.

It is an anual event since 2013, but because of COVID we had to cancel it last year.

We followed all requirements of Covid restrictions and prepared everything else the same way as every year.

We usually begin at 10 am in the morning, at 9 30 we have only been 3 visitors, but at 10 we have been 6 (usually between 15 and 20) and - believe it or not - it was an almost perfect day!

Each visitor agrees to make a Presentation, so we had a very interesting program!

- OS/2 and VM Ware Virtualisation
- an Introduction in Programming OS/2 Programs with QT
- OS/2 as a Host with Virtualbox 5.0.6
- Creating Program Interfaces with TCL/TK
- OS/2 and Paralles Virtualisation on MACOS
- Tipps and Trick for Networking

So there was a feeling as if there had been 20 people around, time passed and the day was full of information and discussion! We closed at 18 o clock in the evening (!).

In the end as every year we went to the Bavarian Brauhaus nearby and had a tremendous meal.

Before the event happend we thougt if or if not this may be the last OS/2 Usermeeting in Colonge.

But:Motivated by this unexpected succesfull and nice day Thomas and me already fixed the date of the next event, at the same Location on Saturday, the 5th of November 2022!

Hope you have some fun viewing the pictures, every visitor gave me the permission to publish the pictures.

All the Best,

Sigurd
