Hi Greggory,

Other than wanting to use your old Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 Yorkfield CPU is there any compelling reason for using an Intel CPU for your new unit?

I gave up on Intel years ago in the days of the 486 processor and now use AMD units exclusively in any computer I build.  My latest unit is based on the MSI B550-A PRO board with an AMD Ryzen third gen processor with built in graphics which works very well with the latest ArcaOS.  Unless you insist on Intel processors I would recommend that you give AMD a try.

Hi Ivan,

Thanks for posting I was looking at - ASUS ROG Strix B450-F Gaming II AMD AM4 (Ryzen 5000, 3rd Gen Ryzen ATX Gaming Motherboard

It's just that I never tried AMD before and always bought Intel. And I'm looking a the model one below ASUS PRIME Z590-P and about the same price as the AMD board.

So, I'll have to take another look now I was going to buy the latest of everything, but why I'm not a gamer ! So, settled on a Core i7 10700K then now coming to my senses I only really need an i5 processor.

One plus for the Intel board is that it supports 11th Generation Core family and I don't buy new computers very often, so I can upgrade for years.

This helped - User Benchmark: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X vs Intel Core i7-10700K

So, after all the typing mainly I just wanted it now, Lol :)

Thx,

Greggory

And my main system is going to be build on this and good price too !!!

ASUS PRIME Z590-P LGA 1200 Intel Z590 SATA 6Gb/s ATX Intel Motherboard

Be careful   with  new  mobo  -  most of them map little memory below the 4G border.
One more issue - missing BIOS or CSM mode  - OS/2 cannot boot at all.
Another issue - on-board net and sound are not supported in OS/2   and   no slots to insert add-on cards.

With any luck ArcaOS 5.1 won't need BIOS or CSM mode. There's always USB sound, the network could be a problem.

I need the newer system for work with Win 10 :( that's why I'm building two. But, I will definitely report the results on both.

Thanks Everyone,

Greggory

I stopped building my own computers. If you want to build your own, I can understand that.

A quick look at e-Bay found this system for under $100 including shipping, which will run rings around what you propose to build. Graphics are built into the CPU, so I would use Panorama.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/324499818422?hash=item4b8db247b6%3Ag%3AxpYAAOSwliBgOU98&LH_BIN=1

I do not know this seller, nor anything about the system other than that I have been using used Lenovo computers for some time, and I like their excellent manuals.

Thanks Neil,

But I already have an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 Yorkfield.

And I like messing around with older stuff !

2) Is best to still use a X800 or X850 TX PE with SNAP accelerated. or a newer high-end card using the Panorama driver?

To my experience  X850  with SNAP   much faster  than any other add-on video card  with Panorama.

But video  integrated  into CPU (not just on-board chip) on Panorama - sometimes much faster than X850  with SNAP.

Thank you, I'm probably going to go with the above the video card alone cost over $100.

But I am definitely going to check out the Asus P5B Deluxe and some others with a X850 PE. And just use the Asus 8400GS Video Card on my other build til I get a high end card or see if the integrated GPU works.

CORRECTION - I probably can find it all new for that, but I want it now ;)

What is your setup with OS/2 if I may ask?

Of course you may,  but pls tell  exactly what do want  to know.

1) I be using a Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 Yorkfield Quad-Core processor with 8 GB of memory.

2) Is best to still use a X800 or X850 TX PE with SNAP accelerated. or a newer high-end card using the Panorama driver?

Thanks,

Greggory

Does anyone remember the best 775 motherboard at that time? I plan on running the latest ArcaOS and Linux on it.

I used to  use   Asus P5B Deluxe   with  Q9650  and x850.  On board net and sound worked ok.

I am curiuous why do you need   such old mobo  and CPU ?

I already have an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650  :)

And I'm building two setups, one for OS/2 with the latest supported hardware @ that time (which are old and cheap) and top of the line over the next couple of months.

I looked around on the forum but really didn't see anything.

And I found this on eBay for $116 is it worth it?

Applications / Re: P7zip syntax for archiving an entire volume
« on: December 21, 2018, 01:18:11 am »

I need a solution that runs from the command line (well, from inside a Rexx script.) P7zip seems to fit the bill, even if I have to use an old version to get it to work.

If Zipboot is a front end to Info-zip, then doesn't it have the issue described in https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,1941.msg19570.html#msg19570?

Try - BackEmUp - I use my "BackEmUp" (command line version) and/or "BackEmUI" (PM gui version of same functionality...) to keep my systems backed up. Eugene Gorbunoff is adding his own interface (Vareyne another alternative gui..) on top of my command line program to add in automatic scheduling, etc. (I use the "AT" command for my scheduling...)

And read what Alex Taylor wrote on your other post about 7z, also as many others have stated there is no issue with zip v3.

I'd like to create a 7z archive of an entire volume, using p7zip on ArcaOS. My first attempt was
Code: [Select]
Tue 11-27-18 22:47:32{1}[h:\vendors\7-zip\p7zip-16.02-os2-1\bin] 7za a w:\temp\m.7z m:\

7-Zip (a) [32] 16.02 : Copyright (c) 1999-2016 Igor Pavlov : 2016-05-21
p7zip Version 16.02 (locale=en_US.IBM-850,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,32 bits,2 CPUs x
86)

Open archive: w:/temp/m.7z
--
Path = w:/temp/m.7z
Type = 7z
Physical Size = 32
Headers Size = 0
Solid = -
Blocks = 0

Scanning the drive:

WARNING: No more files
m:

0 files, 0 bytes

Updating archive: w:/temp/m.7z

Items to compress: 0

Files read from disk: 0
Archive size: 32 bytes (1 KiB)

Scan WARNINGS for files and folders:

m: : No more files
----------------
Scan WARNINGS: 1

I then tried m:\* and the -r option; neither helped. What is the correct syntax? Thanks.

Hi

Here are some backup options, try PM Backup Suite.  Also, if you know some REXX you can modify Zipboot too.

Great job Sigurd and thank you !

...

As an example:
I have a folder that contains over 50 java programs.  A new install of ArcaOS creates a new desktop but I want that folder with all the java programs restored to the desktop - the java programs are in the java-programs directory that is in a non bootable partition and is thus untouched be the new install....

Object Desktop 2.0 will back & restore individual folders to a different desktop ! The option to backup and restore the entire desktop no longer works though on eCS.

Alex Taylor posted a program that does what you are looking for I believe (search on here).

Setup & Installation / Re: ArcaOS 5.0.1 on Dual Boot.
« on: October 18, 2017, 08:36:47 am »
Hi.

This weekend I was trying to install ArcaOS on a non UEFI, non GPT machine with Windows 10 preinstalled.

I think I'm getting the usual limitations of ArcaOS installation tools.
- "Disk 1 reports a corrupt partition table".
- "LVM Error ( 8 ) - Operation is not allowed" when I try to create the partition.

I read other forum post about it.  This is a non-destructive dual boot installation try to install ArcaOS, so I don't want to go forward with all the partition wiping.

I had tried the included tools like "Disk Utility" and "Resize Partition". "Disk Utility" does not report any issue and "Resize Partition" tell me "No Resizable Partitions Found"

.....

Regards

Hi Martin,

- The easiest way is to add another disk in first position for ArcaOS, Win 10 boots fine in second position /w Airboot.

-  Or image (backup) your Win 10 partition, wipe the disk with DFsee, create all partitions with ArcaOS, restore Win 10.

- Or try resizing Easus partionmanager (did it with a Win7 box), fix with DFsee as Rene statement (backup for sure).

Internet / Re: FF45.5 - choppy response/window scrolling anyone???
« on: June 16, 2017, 05:19:21 am »
JFYI, the problem was nailed down and worked around, see the last comments in the respective issue (https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/issues/208). Please also consider reporting such things directly into the Mozilla issue system at https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2 as this way 1) it's guaranteed that it's noticed by the developers and 2) you get much faster feedback.

So everyone, please test ESR 45 with layout.frame_rate set to 0. Here it behaves just like ESR 38 did. I will make this value a default on OS/2 for the time being.

Thx, Dmitriy and your hard  work and to everyone else that makes FF possible !!!

Works  here, I'll post the fix here and it work with SM 2.42 !

In Firefox 45  type:

Code: [Select]
about:config
Search for:

Code: [Select]
layout.frame_rate
Change value from -1 to zero

Code: [Select]
0

My other priority is to get access to the internet. I need to spend some time trying to understand DHCP - it's the required IP addresses that confuse me.

Thanks also to Lars. I am not sufficiently confident in my own technical ability to replace AN's drivers with his.

Paul

That should have been your number one priority from the beginning ???  Now you installed all your programs again on a broken system.

Since you used the easy option, DHCP should just work. Or the router isn't setup up for it (should be default) or the wrong nic driver was installed.  Now you probably need to identify your card and see if it is supported.  Then, uninstall the current setup if it's incorrect and install the right driver.

You should probably post the specs of your system first before anything.

It would be alot easier to just zip your boot partition.  Wipe it again and install using the advance option.  Take 45-60 minutes to do instead of 6 days.  If not just unzip your backup, you tried it twice and got the same results, you should have been working on the Internet from the start ???

Better yet add a maintenance partition (M:) (use adv option) you should have one anyways. For example installing Lars drivers just unzip them to the maintenance/test partition and test the drivers out before installing on your main system, simple - You could use it to as practice too (just create a backup image first).
