General Discussion / Re: EDM/2 Wiki Issue
« on: April 08, 2025, 03:54:55 pm »
That is a lot of work. I hope AI is helping.
It really helped a lot from doing the media wiki layout manually to have it in one second. The thing that I have to be careful about is the that it does not "invent" anything.
But I had to check the quality of the gpi to be sure that is helping. For the moment I didn't found any serious issue with it.

I thought I could export an INF file to IPF using New View Tools->Save as IPF, but that does not work as well as I'd hope. It seems to start saving the document, but then finishes early skipping most of the content of the document.

I think this is a good idea. I will try using IPF instead of the PDF and see if the mediawiki convertion works better with AI.

Programming / EDM/2 - The API Project - Undocumented
« on: April 08, 2025, 02:43:12 pm »
Hello

I want to ask a little help here. I found this undocumented functions and I want to see if we can document those on the EDM/2 wiki.

1) DrgQueryFormat
Ref: https://www.edm2.com/index.php/OS/2_DLL_Entry_Points_Cross_Reference
- PMCTLS.107

2) DrgGetClipPS
Ref: https://www.edm2.com/index.php/OS/2_DLL_Entry_Points_Cross_Reference
- PMCTLS.108    PMDRAG.76

I want to provide as close as possible a documentation like this function as sample, syntax, parameters, etc.. just what we can find out.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Neil
For example, in GpiSetCharBox, there is an item Graphic Elements and Orders. In that page, there is a link to "Set Character Cell", but in the EDM/2 Wiki web page, this link is changed to plain text.
Yes, you are right. It is not perfect and it is good that you let me know.

My issue here is that I'm not using the INF file directly as source (since it is not a recognize format for the AI), I'm using a printed PDF and I copy the text of each function one by one. Otherwise (as far as I tested), if I feed the AI with the source and let it generate the content on the structure that I want, it will start to fill the blanks and invent things (that I don't like). This is why I copy all the text and just use tell it to use the layout and not invent anything. (hopefully)

About this link, the inf file (I got from "yum install os2tk45-books") can not find the reference file.  What will be a good way to find the reference and see if I can fix some of the EDM/2 wiki?

Just an important milestone for me.

I finished the GPI Functions on the Wiki.
- https://www.edm2.com/index.php/GPI_Functions

I used Gemini AI to help me have the wiki layout for each function and it made my job faster.
I let the AI know how I liked the "template" and ask it to not create anything new, just to help me with the format. It reduced my work to more Ctrl+C and Ctrl+P, but less work fixing the layout.

Thanks Paul
...https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-6.6.85-20250406.zip

It works fine, just like the last time, with the current updates to my system.

I tested it (Release version) with ArcaOS 5.1.1 (BIOS) guest on VBox 7.1.6  (Windows 11 24H2 host).
- VM ICH AC97: Works, Audio control working, no traps. Just like the included ArcaOS 5.1 Uniaud.
-- I still have an issue that the first time I play a wav, I hear it loud (100%) and the next times I play it I hear it lower respecting the volume setting. If I drag a file to force the drag sound it sound 100% again, I play another wav  and it is 100% again and the next times respects the volume control (40%). It's the same issue from 3.01.03 (5.14.7), not a new issue.
- VM Intel HD Audio: Works, Audio control working, no traps.
-- It does not has the lowering volume issue as in "ICH AC97"
-- But it still produce sounds in a lower volume. I had to rise it to a 100% to be able to hear something in my speakers, it is the same issue as the 3.01.03 (5.14.7).

For me it is working fine I'm keeping it on my VM.

Hello

Adrian just told me that he hasn't finished to connect the LDAP. We will have to wait more time.
Thanks for testing it.

Hello

We are back editing the EDM/2 wiki. I'll keep going on the never ending task of migrating the OS/2 API to the EDM/2 (AI helps me a little bit now with the MediaWiki format). But I had changed my ID, I don't know why I can not log on with my old user ID. If someone used to have a logon access to the EDM/2 wiki, give it a try, modify the "Sandbox" or your own User Profile page to test it out.

Thanks for the reply Klafli

I want to read your post with more detail.

About this:
Alternative approach (modern design principle):
Instead of keeping CPI permanently available, one could introduce a new modular architecture, where a kind of “boot service” or “initialization manager” takes over certain CPI-related functions — but operates in user space, for example under PROTSHELL.

“Boot service” or “initialization manager” to take over certain CPI-related functions sounds good.

In a way ReactOS would be a better fit for a kernel then Linux. Otherwise extending WINE, which is not an emulator, might help a lot. The running OS/2 on NT does show it is possible to run our binaries on a different OS and WINE shows running Windows apps on Linux is doable. The WPS is perhaps too hard to run on Linux and maybe even NT.

On this case 2ine will be an interesting way to go, since it is like WINE but to interpret OS/2 and not Windows. But the issue with 2ine is that the developer tried to replace all possible functions with a cloned open alternative, which makes it a lot of developer work and this is why the project is incomplete (Like cloning all OS/2). What it may be interesting is to use 2ine to clone only the OS2KRNL and Driver$ only and use the IBM's OS/2 binaries for CMD, PM, SOM, WPS, to avoid cloning all OS/2, and find a way to boot the OS/2 desktop over a different kernel.

"Win-OS/2" runs virtualized / Interpreted on OS/2, right?, not emulated. It will be something like having "Warp-Linux VDM" sessions on Linux.

Hello

I tested the EDM/2 wiki with Firefox 45 and Dooble under ArcaOS and seems to be displaying fine. Adrian upgraded to the new default template of the wiki called Vector-2022 and it seems to work fine.

Comments are welcome, maybe on the future I will also move the OS2World wiki to that template, since it seems to be the new default.

Hello

I'm trying the NotbookLM AI to explain me some basic things.

Quote
**DOSCALLS1.DLL** is a **dynamic link library (DLL)** in OS/2 that appears to be a **core system component providing a wide range of kernel services and API entry points**.

Here's a breakdown of what the sources indicate about it:

*   **Central System DLL:** Almost all programs utilize **DOSCALLS1.DLL**, suggesting its fundamental role in the OS/2 environment.
*   **Initialization:** It seems to have **instance initialization routines**.
*   **API Entry Points:** **DOSCALL1** contains **16-bit entry points that correspond to various OS/2 APIs**. It also appears to handle **32-bit APIs**, with examples like `Dos32FreeMem`, `DosGetMessage`, and `DosPutMessage` having associated trace events within this DLL.
*   **Exception Handling:** The kernel calls the `Dos32R3ExceptionDispatcher` entry point within **DOSCALLS1.DLL** to **process all user exception handlers**.
*   **Kernel Service Indirection:** Many kernel APIs are **indirected through DOSCALL1.DLL**. This means that calls to certain kernel functions might go through this DLL.
*   **Thunking Layer:** **DOSCALLS1.DLL** includes **UniThunk** trace events, indicating it plays a role in **thunking between 16-bit and 32-bit code**.
*   **Traceability:** The System Tracepoints Reference provides a comprehensive source for deriving API-related breakpoints, often with entry point names prefixed with `pre` or `post`, which is applicable to functions within **DOSCALLS1.DLL**. Numerous trace events are defined for various functions within **DOSCALLS1**, allowing for detailed tracing of API calls.
*   **Relationship with other DLLs:** APIs from other DLLs, such as `QUECALLS.DLL` (queue management APIs), can be **indirected via DOSCALL1**.

In essence, **DOSCALLS1.DLL** serves as a crucial intermediary and provider of fundamental operating system services, handling API calls, managing exceptions, and facilitating communication within the OS/2 environment. Its central role is highlighted by its frequent use across applications and its involvement in various core system functionalities.

Which functions does the OS2KRNL provides that are used by DOSCALLS1.DLL?

Quote
Based on the sources, particularly the trace event information, **OS2KRNL provides a variety of kernel functions that are used by or whose calls are indirected through DOSCALLS1.DLL**. The trace logs in `sg244640.pdf` detail many API calls, specifying a major code for `OS2KRNL` (0x0005) and various minor codes corresponding to specific kernel functions. Many of these APIs have tracepoints that indicate they are indirectly accessed via `DOSCALL1`.

Here are some examples of functions provided by **OS2KRNL** that are relevant to **DOSCALLS1.DLL**, based on the trace events:

*   **Memory Management Functions**:
    *   `Dos32GiveSharedMem`
    *   `Dos32QueryMem`
*   **File System Related Functions**:
    *   `DosBufReset`
    *   `DosCallNmPipe`
    *   `DosDevIoctl`
    *   `DosDisConnectMmPipe`
    *   `DosOpen`
    *   `DosOpen2`
    *   `DosPhysicalDisk`
    *   `DosQNmPipeState`
    *   `DosSetMaxFH`
    *   `DosSetNmPHandState`
    *   `DosSetVec`
*   **Process and Thread Management**:
    *   `DosSystemService`
    *   `DosTimerAsync`
*   **Dynamic Linking and Loading**:
    *   `DosGetModHandle`
    *   `DosGetModName`
    *   `Dos32QueryProcAddr`
*   **Synchronization**:
    *   `DosSetSigHandler`
*   **Handle Management**:
    *   `Dos32IQUERYFHSTATE`
*   **Input/Output**:
    *   `Dos32IRead`
*   **Other**:
    *   `Dos32SetFileLocks`

The "Kernel API Tracepoints Indirected Via DOSCALL1" section further confirms this indirection, although it doesn't list the specific kernel functions themselves but rather the tracepoints associated with the pre-invocation of APIs that are indirected.

In summary, **DOSCALLS1.DLL acts as an intermediary for a significant number of OS/2 kernel functions provided by OS2KRNL**, handling the transition and enabling applications to access these core system services. The trace logs provide concrete examples of this interaction by showing how calls to various kernel functions (residing in **OS2KRNL**) are traced with pre-invocation events often associated with **DOSCALLS1**.

Hello

I'm reading this: Inside the OS/2 Kernel by David C. Zimmerli.
It is from the OS/2 2.11 kernel. It is kind of interesting to see how this author was able to see which files of the kernel source code belongs to which component. (of course he does not has the source code, only the file names). I wonder how he did that, and it makes sense to make the same analysis on the latest ArcaOS kernel.

I still want to try to understand the communication between CPI and OS2KRNL. Just to try to theorize what parts of the OS2KRNL needs to be mimic so DOSCALL1.DLL does not complain (or stop working) because it is on a different kernel.

Hello

Adrian wrote me today with the good news that he had made some progress with the EDM/2 wiki hosted in Netlabs.

https://www.edm2.com

The Wiki is now updated and it is available, it is looking fine for the moment. It is read only until Adrian finds out how to connect it to the LDAP.

Just to let you know how bad it is the spam, the wiki was open for registration and it was hit very hard by spam. EDM/2 was only open for 4 hours and 20 spam account were created and started posting articles. I think I had blocked all and deleted the spam.

General Discussion / Re: Brainstorm: What is Next with OS/2 ?
« on: March 31, 2025, 02:14:31 pm »
Hello Klafi
Dear all,
How about an OS/2 or ARCOS without Windows and DOS? Wouldn't that be easier?

Thanks everyone

I personally don't use the DOS VDM and Win-OS/2 as a vital thing of OS/2, but I was amazed to to see some years ago the quantity of people defending it because they run a DOS or Win16 software on it.

If you think that ArcaOS without DOS VDM and Win-OS/2 will make it easier because some patent or fee that is currently part of Microsoft, and will make ArcaOS cheaper, I don't think so. It looks to me that IBM has the right over the MS binaries included in OS/2 and there is no active money exchange anymore. I think of this because the IBM and Microsoft Jointly development agreement that I was able to read, it says that both parties has the right of the source code exchanged there.

I also don't think that DOS VDM and Win-OS/2 is the only limitation for IBM not to open source OS/2. There is also a lot of MS code in PM, Kernel, drivers and also code from third parties (Adobe). Even that I think that Microsoft won't be a problem when open sourcing OS/2, I think IBM does not want to take the risk without a good business case that provides them more benefits then trouble.

But I'm open to other opinion and ideas.

Hello Jack, welcome to the forum.

DavidR kept the discussion about this on the VirtualBox Forum, check it out:
- https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=113195

I asked also to test some OS/2 OVAs on the MacOS Host, and they told me those works fine. At the end it was told that possible the Apple hypervisor sometimes give this kind of errors, but VMWare was performing better, so it brings a lot of doubts.

DavidR, did you opened a ticket for it?

Regards
