Title: HOBLink and ArcaOS
Post by: Glenn on September 18, 2022, 01:05:38 pm
Hi,

How does one install / start on ArcaOS the HOBLink X11 version that was included with eCS ?

During the install, I get a "fatal error : cannot load C:\HOBX11\xwpdllid.dll" pops up (the file is present in the folder). That makes the installer stop, but after I copied the files from an eCS installation (and added the registration info to the registry), the message is the same when trying to start the X server.

Additional strange thing (but not a showstopper): the installer defaults to D:\HOBX11, even though I have no drive D on my ArcaOS VM...

Thanks for any tip!

A.

 Hi Glenn,

I vaguely remember trying this when ArcaOS first came out and found that HOBLink somehow checks that it is on an eCS installation and doesn't work otherwise. Maybe you can figure out how to fake an eCS install for it...

There are several options to detect an eCS installation:

There are several options to detect an eCS installation:
  • \os2\install\syslevel.ecs
  • \ecs\ecs_inst.flg
  • \ecs\dll\securit2.dll
  • \os2\ecsreg.ini
  • \os2\ecsreg11.ini

(I don't want to use the old X-Window desktop anymore.)

There are some programs, that look for a file named "WiseMachine.FIT" (can be empty), in the root of the boot drive.

That was for the first eCS version only and is not safe, because the file is copied on booting the eCS CD. It can be be used for versions before syslevel.ecs existed.

There are several options to detect an eCS installation:
  • \os2\install\syslevel.ecs
  • \ecs\ecs_inst.flg
  • \ecs\dll\securit2.dll
  • \os2\ecsreg.ini
  • \os2\ecsreg11.ini
[...] "WiseMachine.FIT"

Out of the eCS 1.2 install, I did copy syslevel.ecs, securit2.dll, ecsreg11.ini to the same directories on my boot drive (ecsreg.ini was already there, I may have had some use for it..). WiseMachine file was absent (I created an empty file with that name) but ecs_inst.flg was nowhere to be found.

Even with these files, HOBLink still threw me the same error..

It's interesting, I got a copy when they quit supporting OS/2 as they were giving out free licenses. Runs fine on my Warp V4 install but on Arca Noae I get a popup saying "License Agreement Error", "Your version of program isn't legal copy", "Please reinstall HOBlink X11/PM"
I do see the registration serial number in my install.

Glenn,

I walked through your footsteps and had stopped, with the same result you got.
But I've went back to this. And went a little further with a successful install - that pops the license violation dialog (close, but no cigar!)

So here's how to do it:

- Get eComstation 1.1
- Start the HobX11 install. Make it fail. Don't close it.
- From eComstation 1.1 Disk 1, copy \os2\dll\securit2.dll to where you've installed HobLink
- Go back to the installer - it works now.

When prompted for a license, I filled bogus data and it's likely why its failing.

Dave,

After I started Hoblink I've add the same result as you. Same dialog. Unless the binary is patched to skip the check, we can't use it under ArcaOS.

Unless there's a way to have it think it's running under Warp 4 or eCS

Well, others have reported success with the eCS registered version by having the correct ecs*.reg in the right place. Simplest might be if we could use the trace facility or such to see what file it is looking for.
Other options, there was an IBM xserver in one of the old MPTS packages, I forget the specifics.
The real Xserver is now somewhat broken, Arca Noae did something to Panorama and SNAP for UEFI support so the system crashes when returning to the WPS. I have a partition with an older SNAP where it works. Also should be able to use the VNC driver to display on the desktop. I think at one point I ported the tinyvnc driver.

Why play about with the sCS version when the HOBLink X11 server for OS/2 works with ArcaOS, at least my ver 3.5 does although I seldom use it now.

Which one are you trying to install?  The one with eCS is ONLY for eCS the one I am talking about is a universal OS/2 version from HOBLink, it does not ask for anything during the install except where you want it installed (the default is D:\HOBX11).  If all you have is the one from the eCS install CD then you are dead in the water from the start.

Ah, and that's why then.

And the original HOBLink can't be found anywhere now. You are lucky to have that copy with you! It's precious now!

Hi Ivan, do you have the original installer? I installed it long ago on Warp V4 and now it only runs on Warp v4 and the installer is long lost.
And Merry Xmas

Merry Christmas SoundChaser,

Another possibility for X is weirdx, whether it still works, I don't know. It is a Java program.

My understanding is the company that made Hoblink released it as freeware when the company stopped selling it.  It appears Dave has that same understanding.

I have HOBLink-x11 v 3.5 running on my AOS v 5.? machine. I just tested it with xhello.exe (from the IBM PMX distribution) and it runs without a nag or  warning.   My problem is I don't remember how I installed it.

I   have a file on my server where I store OS/2 apps (which is the one I uploaded), and I remember that I have copies of every version of ECS released, some of which also have HOBLink,  and there is a zip file on Hobbes for v 3.5 that says it is a trial version - but I don't remember which one I used to install my working copy.

So try the one from Hobbes and/or the one I uploaded.  If neither of those work let us know and I can try and zip up my installation and maybe we can get it installed that way.

Hi Dave, and a merry Christmas and new year to you.

Yes I do have the full zip (4 plus meg).  I would put it up here but the last time I tried with a zip larger than 2 meg it doesn't accept it.

Thanks Doug. It would not do a new install, complained about XWPDLLID.DLL being missing, so I installed it over my old HOBX11 install which seemed to work fine. The serial number seems hard coded and the same as I had.
Can't connect to it though
Code: [Select]
[F:\usr\X11R6\bin]putty -d 127.0.0.1:1

Gdk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

I have to reread the help and perhaps test on the partition where X is installed. It's been a long time and might need more then BEGINLIBPATH set.
Perhaps yours is an update as Ivan says his is over 4MB while yours is a hair less then 4MB.

Edit: xcalc does start and display on the desktop, with screwed up glyphs, xclock fails, xeyes also opens, only follows the mouse if it is in its window. Xman also starts, with screwed up characters

SoundChaser,

That is strange because I have it running on my AOS system.  I don't know what I have on my machine that makes it think that it is ecs.

So I have attached my installation, along with the entry in OS2.INI for HOBLink_X11 - which I created with the Option - To Disk menu item in INIE.  Since there is a Option - From Disk I am hopeful it will create the entry from the file.  The file you need to import with INIE is HOBSTUFF.XXX, but I had to zip it because OS2Word has a restriction on extensions of XXX.

Second part - I am doing this in two parts to avoid size limits.

Dave - It appears to work OK on my machine - Gimp appears to run fine, although it is SLOW - especially when it is first starting.  Slow as in it takes a couple of minutes to load all the plugins and stuff it is loading up.  The second time it starts it starts quicker.

My comparison is HOBLink verses PMX.  HOBLink appears to render some dialogs (the color parts) better, although the fonts are huge.  Which might be a setting.   The attached file gimp_pmx02.jpg shows the file open dialog - you can see that every other line is black. When you click on the line (gimp_pmx03.jpg) PMX renders the colors correctly.  The same file dialog in HOBLink is in shown in gimp_hob02.jpg.

Both seem to work OK when the file is actually open - gimp_hob01.jpg verses gimp_pmx01.jpg.  The differences are PMX is faster, especially when gimp is starting, and the default settings for the font sizes works better.

But I have to say I don't really use Gimp very much - Embellish fits my needs better.  So there my be other issues with either/both X11 servers I am not aware of.

 Hi Doug,

Thanks for uploading your install of HOBLink. To my surprise, I was actually able to get it to work. In case it helps someone else, here is what I did:

1. Download Doug's install of HOBLink, copy to the C:\Programs\hobx11 directory. Tried starting xserver.exe and xstartup.exe but got the notice it is not a legal installation.

2. Downloaded Doug's HOBLink installer, ran it and installed over the copied version. At the end added my name (serial number pre-inserted) after which xserver.exe and xstartup.exe work without complaint!

Haven't actually tried using it for anything yet, so might see some of the strangeness Dave noted, but at least it is operational.

Regards,

Found my problem. I turned DIVE off as it performs horribly with Panorama, and that caused my problems. Turning it back on and xman becomes readable with nice glyphs, but slow as in watching each line getting drawn.
Need to remember how to get the VNC server working with real X, it is fast especially with a minimal window manager.

Martin,

inie.exe is a little program that edits *.INI files.  I THINK I got it from Hobbes but I am not sure.  I have it installed in a UTIL directory that contains all my utilities, like zip, unzip, etc. and I have been coping the contents of that directory from machine to machine for years so I don't remember where it came from.  But I have zipped it up and uploaded it.

Done some more experimenting, seems the installer that Doug posted is the one from eCS. If you unzip it,
and replace XWPDLLID.DLL (45916 bytes) with the one from the trial version, (36412 bytes), https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/x11/HOBLinkX11_3-5.zip (https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/system/x11/HOBLinkX11_3-5.zip) it installs fine with no sign of a timeout.

If anyone is able to use a modern browser via an OS/2 Xserver please post your config.   I have tried both Chrome and Falkon and ran into issues with modern Xserver extensions not being supported in PMX and HOBLink servers (e.g., MIT screen saver and shared memory extensions).

I have tried to disable the extensions in xorg.conf without success.   For example, for the MIT-SHM shared memory extension, I added the following to xorg.conf which should have disabled the extension but the browsers still choked when starting:

  Section "Extensions"
      Option "MIT-SHM" "disable"
  EndSection

I wanted to try Exceed for OS/2, but unfortunately my floppies have been sitting too long and disk-2 and disk-5 have read errors preventing an installation without corruption.  Tried recovering the two disks with ddrescue without success.   Exceed for OS/2 is also very old and wouldn't resolve the issues with newer extensions.

Not too surprised by needing MIT-SHM and Hoblink not supporting it, even XFree86/X.org needs a device driver to implement it. Am surprised about the screensaver requirement. Our Firefox has a fallback if there is no screensaver installed though I guess the screensaver extension has been around for so long (copyright 1994 here) it makes sense that it is expected.
Wonder if real XFree on OS/2 is capable of displaying a modern browser?
I could try if I could remember how to set things up, both here and on my sons Linux box. No xdm on OS/2 either.

While on the subject, I've been testing Xfree86 on the latest beta, basically AOS 5.1. Previously my old install crashed when returning to the WPS, so I started over.
Downloaded all X450*.zip files from ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/xfree86/4.5.0/ (http://ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/xfree86/4.5.0/), unzipped them to somewhere that is not @unixroot but is \usr, in my case Y:\usr\X11R6, also need \usr\adm. It may work installing to @unixroot\usr but I prefer to avoid it as Xfree86 is EMX and various kLIBC ports might find it and try to use it.
Added device=y:\usr\X11R6\lib\xf86sup.sys to config.sys and rebooted.
My xenv.cmd,
Code: [Select]
set X11ROOT=Y:
set X11PATH=Y:\usr\X11R6
set LIBPATHSTRICT=T
set PATH=%X11PATH%\bin;%PATH%
set BEGINLIBPATH=%X11PATH%\lib;%BEGINLIBPATH%
set DISPLAY=local/127.0.0:0.0
set TERMCAP=%X11ROOT%/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/etc/xterm.termcap
set term=ansi
set logname=dave
set user=dave
set HOME=f:\home\dave
set XSERVER=%X11ROOT%/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86.exe
set LOGNAME=%USER%
SET MANPATH=%X11ROOT%/xfree86/man;e:/emx/man;%MANPATH%

After running it in a cmd prompt, run startx and here everything was correctly probed and I found myself at the X desktop.
It is slightly broken, the window manager twm should have been started and for some reason it isn't. Run start twm in a xterm. Later can install a better window manager.
Ctrl-esc to return to the OS/2 desktop, there are 3 xterms by default, typing exit in the login one will close Xfree86, due to the window manager not starting automatically, the other 2 xterms should also be manually exited, or close them after with the window list or xcentre.
This should give a working X desktop. Note that it will not work on an UEFI install, doesn't like the BIOS and can't probe the screens, so only for a BIOS install.

Log will be written to \usr\adm.
Edit: fix typo

1) Which java version are you using? What does java -version report? The one I'm testing this on is java 1.1.8, which is stored in C:\Java11. IIRC this is the one that comes with OS/2 (MCP2?) for some of the config dialogs for TCPIP and whatnot.
2) Download the zipfile version of weirdx-1.0.31. https://sourceforge.net/projects/weirdx/files/WeirdX/1.0.31/weirdx-1.0.31.zip/download (https://sourceforge.net/projects/weirdx/files/WeirdX/1.0.31/weirdx-1.0.31.zip/download) and extract.
3) Edit the file weirdx.cmd in the MISC folder and make sure you have "set JAVA_HOME=C:\Java11"
4) Edit the file props in the MISC\CONFIG folder and comment out the line "weirdx.windowmode=InBrowser" and uncomment the line with RootlessWM just below.
5) Return to MISC folder and run weirdx.cmd
6) "netstat -l" should report that port 6002 is open
7) On linux machine open an xterm and type "export DISPLAY=<os2 box ip>:2

Code: [Select]
you@linux:~# export DISPLAY=192.168.1.123:2
8] Any X software run in that term will now display on the OS/2 machine.

Code: [Select]
you@linux:~# xterm &
"&" will put the software in the background so you can run more with the same window.

Here is a limited list of what works and doesn't here. I couldn't test audio and I don't think the X server does anything with audio at all anyways (i.e. audio would come out of the Linux machine sound card)

Works:
Chromium-ungoogled - Browsed and played YouTube. Only works when video is tiny but browsing seemed fine.
Discord - This is a chromium based web app packaged as a program, and works fine.
wine - Tested IrfanView with wine64 ouputting to WeirdX and scrolled some images, a couple other tests didn't work though.
DOSBox - didn't test any programs, but built in prompt worked and displayed the welcome screen fine.
xterm
xcalc
xeyes - lol
mpv and mplayer both played video! Definitely not hardware accelerated. About 720p size didn't seem choppy.

Doesn't work:
Firefox - seems to need hardware accel
Thunderbird - is firefox in disguise
SeaMonkey
GIMP
Pidgin
kitty, Konsole, probably most "fancier" terms than xterm
xpdf

I don't really have much else I can test unfortunately.

Hi Fusion

I downloaded https://sourceforge.net/projects/weirdx/files/WeirdX/1.0.31/weirdx-1.0.31.zip/download

1) I'm using OpenJDK 1.6 (https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/?search=OpenJDK_6_b27_GA5.wpi) that is included on ArcaOS 5.0.7
Quote
[C:\HOME\DESKTOP]java -version
openjdk version "1.6.0_27"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_27-b01-GA5)
OpenJDK Client VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode)
I run it with a simple "java -cp weirdx.jar com.jcraft.weirdx.WeirdX"

I can go only to step #6, since I don't have a Linux machine at hand. I can confirm that "netstat -l" reports that port 6002 is open
