Thanks Dave.

The ffmpeg library, plus libkai, pcre2-utf16 and nss libraries got dooble to at least start.

It won't load any web pages and the menus do strange things (submenus appear in random locations), but I will go back through previous posts and make sure I have all my settings correct.

Thanks again.

Anyone know where to get AVUTIL56?

Downloaded the packages Martin listed
- Qt6 libs - https://www.dropbox.com/s/j8ybbujncktdf22/qt6-6.2.4-os2-20230108.zip?dl=0
- Qt6Webee - https://smedley.id.au/tmp/qt6webee-20230115.zip
- Dooble   -  https://smedley.id.au/tmp/dooble-2023.01.18-os2-qt6-20230121.zip

Tried to run Dooble and got an error message - missing KAI1 - which I found in libkai with ANPM

Now I get an error missing AVUTIL56.

Is there something I can YUM to get the required DLLs?

Thank you Dave Yeo - that did the trick.

The lib was not mentioned in the read.me - which is such an easy mistake to make.  Moving an application from development to installation can be tricky because it is so easy to miss dependencies.

However I consider this to be a case of operator error on my part, because I just noticed the FIND in Acra Noae Package Manager menu that I could have used to search which package had the DLL I needed.  And VLC was polite enough to tell me which DLL I was missing - so I could have fixed this myself if I was paying attention.  (Thanks again Dave for the info.)

Ivan - I am a convert on RPM/YUM/Acra Noae Package Manager.  I didn't like it at first and I am still annoyed at not being able to specify the install location of packages, but the benefits so outweigh the deficits.  The system is actually pretty amazing: you can get access to, and install, applications and libraries that you need - along with updates - and it is really pretty painless (when you pay attention to the menu options, which obviously I didn't.)

BTW - VLC 3.018 works great.  Thanks again KO for porting the package, and to the VLC team for making such an amazing app.

I am trying to run the new vlc v 3.0.18 and it is complaining about a missing file IDN11

Anyone know where that file is located, or which package  it is part of?

Another interesting thing:  If I search IDN11.DLL OS2WORD  from google front page I get nothing.

If I enter IDN11.DLL in the search on the front page of OS2WORLD is comes back with nothing. (I am guessing it just passes searches off to google.)

If I enter IDN11.DLL in the search for the forums page I get a hit - a topic about PDF issues.

Lastly: shout out to KO Myung-Hun for his port of VLC.   It is a VERY nice player.  Thanks KO

Martin,

inie.exe is a little program that edits *.INI files.  I THINK I got it from Hobbes but I am not sure.  I have it installed in a UTIL directory that contains all my utilities, like zip, unzip, etc. and I have been coping the contents of that directory from machine to machine for years so I don't remember where it came from.  But I have zipped it up and uploaded it.

Second part - I am doing this in two parts to avoid size limits.

Dave - It appears to work OK on my machine - Gimp appears to run fine, although it is SLOW - especially when it is first starting.  Slow as in it takes a couple of minutes to load all the plugins and stuff it is loading up.  The second time it starts it starts quicker.

My comparison is HOBLink verses PMX.  HOBLink appears to render some dialogs (the color parts) better, although the fonts are huge.  Which might be a setting.   The attached file gimp_pmx02.jpg shows the file open dialog - you can see that every other line is black. When you click on the line (gimp_pmx03.jpg) PMX renders the colors correctly.  The same file dialog in HOBLink is in shown in gimp_hob02.jpg.

Both seem to work OK when the file is actually open - gimp_hob01.jpg verses gimp_pmx01.jpg.  The differences are PMX is faster, especially when gimp is starting, and the default settings for the font sizes works better.

But I have to say I don't really use Gimp very much - Embellish fits my needs better.  So there my be other issues with either/both X11 servers I am not aware of.

SoundChaser,

That is strange because I have it running on my AOS system.  I don't know what I have on my machine that makes it think that it is ecs.

So I have attached my installation, along with the entry in OS2.INI for HOBLink_X11 - which I created with the Option - To Disk menu item in INIE.  Since there is a Option - From Disk I am hopeful it will create the entry from the file.  The file you need to import with INIE is HOBSTUFF.XXX, but I had to zip it because OS2Word has a restriction on extensions of XXX.

My understanding is the company that made Hoblink released it as freeware when the company stopped selling it.  It appears Dave has that same understanding.

I have HOBLink-x11 v 3.5 running on my AOS v 5.? machine. I just tested it with xhello.exe (from the IBM PMX distribution) and it runs without a nag or  warning.   My problem is I don't remember how I installed it.

I   have a file on my server where I store OS/2 apps (which is the one I uploaded), and I remember that I have copies of every version of ECS released, some of which also have HOBLink,  and there is a zip file on Hobbes for v 3.5 that says it is a trial version - but I don't remember which one I used to install my working copy.

So try the one from Hobbes and/or the one I uploaded.  If neither of those work let us know and I can try and zip up my installation and maybe we can get it installed that way.

Off Topic discussions / Dacal CD Library
« on: February 25, 2022, 09:43:55 pm »
Dacal made a machine for storing CD/DVDs which was marketed under the names of Dacal CD Library, CAF Tek Digital Disc Organizer, and ZIO TEK, among others.  The machines store 150 disks on a rotating carousel and have a number pad on front for keying in the slot holding a disk as well a USB port for interfacing to a cataloging software application.

The machines use one or two rubber belts: one for rotating the carousel and the other for ejecting the disk - later machines use a set of gears
instead of a belt for the ejecting machanism.  The link below is a video of one of the machines in action.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UkC_G_vrAg

The weakness in the machines are the belts - they stretch and/or become hard.  When that happens the carousel will not rotate or the disk will not eject and the machine will display the message SOS above the keypad.

The solution is to install a new belt.  However Dacal no longer makes the machines and I have not been able to find a part number or specifications for the belt.  So I contacted a local rubber company and had them manufacture some new belts for me.  I have attached a drawing of the belt so that anyone else seeking replacement belts can either contact Denver Rubber Company or take the drawing to their local rubber company and have some made.

I have also attached some pics of the machine disassembled.  To remove the top cover you have to remove 6 screws from the bottom of the machine (three in front and three in the back) one screw on each side towards the front.  Lift up the top cover from the back, and carefully snap the front of the top cover off of the front panel.

To remove the carousel you have to remove three screws from the cover in the center of the carousel and then lift off the cover.  You CAN lift off the center cover while the carousel is loaded if you are careful.  The carousel then just lifts off - the belts are under the carousel.

Thanks guys for the response.  After reading this I started to remember this was covered in one of the WarpStock 2021 presentations  by David Azarewicz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk6iwx43lM8&list=PL4pjffCdj7wRBQfyneCN8kETgFesTSEy2&index=5

Looks like a list of compatible motherboards is more important than ever - or buying from Blond Guy and letting him do the hard work of discovering what works and what doesn't.

I have learned, the hard way, that it is worth the time and money to get hardware that is compatible, e.g. postscript printers instead of Windows printers, etc.  I believe the saying is: buy well and only cry once.

Are you guys saying that AOS on newer systems with more than 4 GB of ram installed cannot utilitize all 4 GB of RAM for the system?

Hardware / Re: Iomega ZIP 100 IDE
« on: January 02, 2022, 06:49:48 am »
Igor,

I have an IDE Zip disk on an eComStation machine.  The motherboard does not have an IDE interface so I am using an expansion card with an IDE interface.  I have attached my config.sys in hopes it might be helpful.  I do not remember making any changes to my config.sys in order for the drive, or expansion card, to work - but it was a few years ago.

Zip disks function like USB thumb drives, in that a drive letter is not assigned until you insert a disk and click on Refresh Removable Media.  Likewise you need to "eject" the disk using the command line or the WPS before removing the disk.

I have about 10 zip disks from the mid 1990s that I recently searched looking for some old software.  All the disks were readable.  Most are formatted as FAT but at least one is formatted HPFS.

My memory of how I formatted some as HPFS was to insert the disk before booting the machine; the system thought it was a fixed drive at that point.  Once again this was many years ago and I may be remembering incorrectly and that might have been on a SCSI based Zip drive - if it makes a difference.

Good luck
