When I installed Warp 3 for the first time the hardware was very modest.... A Nokia (yes, they made computers back then) 25MHz 386DX with 4MB of RAM. And yes, it really was SLOW. Later I used a Digital 33MHz 486SX with 8MB of RAM and it was much much faster. And finally 100MHz Pentium, there wasn't much performance difference compared to the 486 but the 386 with the minium RAM was almost unusable (but it wasn't fast better with Windows 95 either).

My friend bought a new IBM Aptiva 486 in late 1994 or early 1995 and I never understood why it came with PC-DOS and Windows 3,1 installed instead of OS/2. Why didn't IBM ship OS/2 with its own computer models?

I wasn't aware of Martin's channel but now I'm a subscriber. Other OS/2 related channels are WarpEvents, os2memories, OS2memories, Warpstock Europe and Sigurd Fastenrath. Are there still more channels I should be aware of?

When watching the Warp launch event from 1994 I just keep on wondering what went wrong. Here in Finland I remember when I saw a pc running Warp 3.0 next to another one running Windows 95 beta back in 1994 in a local computer store. If my memory serves me right, I got my own copy in 1996 when a friend of mine won one in a lottery and sold it to me. And after Warp 4.0 was introduced a lot of copies of Warp 3.0 sold on a large discount and later they were even given away for free. The situation might have been that there were a large amount of copies in Finland but the demand for them was quite modest. There were lots of things Warp 3.0 did better than Windows 95 and backwards compatibility with DOS and Windwos 3,1 shouldn't have been a problem either: some Windows 3,1 software that ran under OS/2 didn't run under Windows 95. Windows 95 was also more unstable. But OS/2 wasn't perfect either, it wasn't "as solid as a rock" and it was possible to hang up the system. Things got better with Warp 4.0... But still when using ArcaOS nowadays reboots are some times required when, for example, WinOS/2 session hangs completely and CAD popup doesn't always work.

Did IBM fail because of bad marketing? David Barnes did all that he could and was a good speaker in a front of audience but why wasn't it enough? But when I think back Microsoft was a market leader and usually won all its rivals. At my school we used WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS and later 6.0 for Windows but they ware replaced by Microsoft Word 6.0 for some reason unknown to me. Maybe Word had already become a market leader by then. It was also in around 1996. Linux was also far superior operating system compared to Windows 9X when it comes to stability but still Windows dominated the market. And the only reason for Linux to be a bit successful is it's being free and open-source. Might the open-source route have gained more popularity to OS/2 also? But like it has been said, making the os source available will never happen because of the licensing issues and IBM has no interest in spending more money and time to it.

It's quite amazing that loyal users have kept OS/2 alive and you can run it on "bare metal" even now in 2019. Many other old operating systems have disappeared completely into obsolescence. Many of them, however, have been released as open-source later like CP/M and others.

Bryan Lunduke also found 38 version of Firefox being very unstable when he made his video about ArcaOS. And the OS/2 port seemed to be more unstable than the Linux one. The 45 version is also more compatible with Youtube and doesn't have the full screen bug when playing videos.

I have tried to re-download my copy for several days but download.arcanoae.com doesn't respond. Well, I already found my misplaced USB stick but hopefully possible download issues will be fixed before the next major update.

It's nice to see the progress made and I'm looking forward for the next release. It's a mystery why they still don't ship newer version of Firefox because 38 generation is very outdated and even unstable. But Arca Noae has made a huge amount of work in a short period of time because they have based all on IBM's last release and not eComstation. So they have had to redo much work that eComstation people had already done before.

Is the video still available to download somewhere? I sent an Email to Mr Fastenrath but he hasn't answered.

I'm downloading everything interesting from the Corel FTP site right now. BTW, it was hard to find a good and working GUI ftp client for OS/2. I ended up using JFTP, it seems to work. I could have used command line tools such as wget, but I prefer graphical FTP client. And downloading files one by one with Firefox makes no sense in this situation.

I have already forgot the name of the client I used with Warp 3.0 over 20 years ago... There was at least one good FTP client if my memory serves me right.

There are graphics glitches however. The OS/2 version of DOSBox is missing configuration files that Windows version has. So how can one set  [autoexec] and "cputype" settings?

And now I've tried it and confirmed that it's possible to install Windows 95 under the OS/2 version of DOSBox. So it's possible to run older 32 bit Windows software quite easily. Windows 98 might also work.

It's extraordinary that a software company still provides patches for such an old piece of software. Great! There might even be patches for older WP versions I have, for example 5.0 for DOS.

According to eCSoft/2 site the missing library was libxslt. I hadn't installed it for some reason. But...

"Rpmdb checksum is invalid: dCDPT(pkg checksums): libxslt.i686 0:1.1.32-1.oc00 -u"

OpenOffice seems to work fine now however.

No, libxml2 is already installed. That's not the problem. Of course I've installed dependencies mentioned in the documentation.

OpenOffice works fine with another computer of mine. But with this Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 it doesn't and gives the error message.

Personally I find 38.8.0 VERY unstable and many sites won't work correctly. However, the latest build of 45.9.0 seems much much better. It hasn't crashed once in my use and it's not as slow as 38.8.0 was.

If you want to use cloud service, what would be the best alternative for Microsoft then? Google Drive shouldn't be it because they are worse than Microsoft when it comes to selling of your data. DropBox? Apple iCloud? At the moment DropBox seems to be only one that has a plugin available for OS/2 netdrive.

When trying to start OpenOffice, I'll get the following message. Is there any way to fix this?

OpenOffice 4.1.6 - Fatal Error

Applications / Re: Compiling Word 1.1 from the source code

Maybe "to use" was a wrong verb to use. As a curiousity it would be nice to compile and try out this old piece of software. Actually I found a copy from Winworldpc.com and it works under ArcaOS. And yes, the program is very limited compared to modern word processors. I could use OpenOffice writer or Office 365 to do everything I need but it's just fun to be able to use older software occasionally.
