Applications / Re: VirtualBox v5.0.51 Testing

The Import Appliance feature never reaches completion but appears to work OK.

I used File - > Export Applicance to export an WinXP virtual machine I had created on an AMD machine.

I used File -> Import Appliance to import that appliance/virtual machine (the WinXP VM) on an Intel based laptop (Lenovo T530i). The import got to 99% 2/3 and never completed. Or I should say the dialog box never got past 99%.

I used WatchCat (a process monitor) to terminate the vbox session.

When I restarted vbox the imported "appliance" was there - i.e. the WinXP VM. It started and appears to be running fine. I had to re-import the guest additions, but other than that it is running fine.

So it appears the import works correctly, even though it never gets past 99% on the progress dialog box.

Kudos to all who are working on this project. Very very nice.

Applications / Re: AOS Removable media monitor - how to install
« on: September 26, 2018, 02:32:38 am »
Thanks Dave.

It appears, once again, to be operator error on my part.

I misread Andreas post as "add new widget" instead of  what he actually wrote, which was "create new widget".

Once I clicked on the right part  of xCenter I saw the create new widget menu option - which worked just fine.

And thanks again Andreas, for your help.

I have the Removable Media thing on another AOS machine (and now on the laptop) and I like it. Very nice.

OK to answer my own question - based in the Ram Disk Memory Limits dialog

The low memory check box must mean all memory below 4gb
The high memory check box must mean all memory above 4gb

Something (BIOS video memory?) must be reserving a chunk of below 4GB memory, i.e. "low memory"

No matter what you do to the check boxes, the next time you open the Ram Disk setup thingy, both check boxes are checked. So the only way to know or check where the Ram Disk is being created is with a memory analyzer, or to look at os2ldr.cfg

Thanks guys for the answer about PAE.

I guess this means, in theory, it is possible for some of those memory hungry applications (FireFox, vBox) to also use memory above 4GB?

I guess I am confused by the Ram Disk setup screen. I am using AOS

The screen shows two check boxes, with available memory next to them.
One check box says Low memory.
The other says High memory.

My laptop has 8 GB of RAM.

If "low memory" means everything below the 4 GB boundary,  and "high memory" means above the 4GB boundary, then the available memory shown next to the "high memory" check box should show 4 GBs.

If the "low memory" check box means conventional memory, and "high memory" means the memory between conventional and 4GB, then how do you select the memory above 4GB

Do anyone know how the Ram Disk setup thingy work?

Thanks Andreas

I put those two files, plus RemMedia.xqs in the directory.

AN Removable Media shows up on the Add Widget submenu, but is greyed out so I can't select it.

Yes Valery, you are correct. My mistake. 4 GB limit.

I have read that the AOS RAM disk uses memory above the 4 MB limit - meaning on a 8 MB machine I could assign 4MB to a ram disk and not impact any OS/2 applications or the operating system itself.

Yet the Low and High memory check boxes and available amounts don't seem to indicate that is true.

Does anyone know where RAM disk takes memory? And it it does use memory about the 4 MB limit, how does it do that?

I am trying to figure out how to add the AOS removable media monitor widget to xCenter. For some reason when I installed AOS 5.01 on my laptop the monitor wasn't installed.

I think the rate is just for attending Warpstock, and the room costs are additional.

I wanted to go this year but couldn't. Knowning now when and where for next year makes it easier for me and my wife to plan.  See ya next year, and good luck organizing.

Setup & Installation / Re: USB 3.0 /3.1

Andi B - I also prefer working on a desktop over a laptop because of the keyboard, mouse, and much larger monitor. But sometimes it is impratical to haul my desktop around and a laptop is very handy. Hence wifi, and on the newer machines, USB 3, is important.

My opinion is the graphics part is pretty good right now for desktop users. It is easy and cheap to buy a graphics card that is supported by SNAP, and SNAP works great for dual monitors. I am writing this right now on dual 27" monitors each running at 1920 x 1080 via ArcaOS SNAP on a quad core machine. The video card (Radeon X600) cost $7 including shipping. While I don't believe SNAP will run the the very wide 4K screens, I think Panorama will.
Panorama on a quad core machine performs well enough to run video at 1920 x 1080, but I don't know how well it will perform at 4k resolutions.

If video is a concern then it is a concern (to me) for laptops because of the problem running WinOS2. My laptop will not run SNAP and WinOS2 does not run on that machine with Panorama - which means it doesn't run. However there may be a work around for that by running the Win16 apps in WinXP in VBOX. It will be a pain to install and setup, but I suspect it will work.

If it runs the x86 instruction set it should, in theory, run other OSes . Sigurd Fastenrath has a video on YouTube showing OS/2 running on an Asus minicomputer with an ATOM processor. And one showing OS/2 running on a Samsung slate tablet running a core i5.

As the article you referenced said, the prototype has been out for 2 years and no one has brought a product to market. My guess is the fact that it is not a phone means it probably wont get built/marketed. The not-a-phone-ness of the Palm Pilot appears to be what killed that product/product type. And this pocket pc is not a phone.

My opinion is you want a phone small enough to fit in your pocket. If you are doing computery type things you want a screen large enough to be useful; it may be possible to run a spreadsheet on a phone sized screen but who wants to do that. The "pocket pc" misses both marks: its not a phone but is phone sized, so the screen is too small be really useful for computery type activities.

Dariusz,

I was trapping in OS2KRNL.

I submitted a bug report and got a response and a fix from ArcaNoae on Sat.

The short version is

"The trap is occurring when PM is attempting to load LEDPANEL.FON which is
installed by PMDCALC.WPI.  The font file itself is OK, but it exposes a defect
in _ldrGetMte..."

So far the fix has been working.

Hardware / Re: Lenovo External Monitor

I am currently using something similar - an IOGear Ethernet 2 WiFi Universal Wireless Adapter (GWU637). I use the external switch on the laptop to turn off the radio in the laptop when I connect the adapter - as the adapter instructions suggest.  Two radios on at the same time (the adapter and the laptop) would probably be less than optimal.

When I slide the switch off the indicator light for the radio turns off.  In Windows the switch must be on for the radio to work. If the switch is on I can also use the Fn key-radio key combo to turn the radio on or off - but the slider switch must be on for that to work.  Actually the Fn key combo brings up a software app that has a radio button (pun intended?) for turning the radio and/or bluetooth on or off.

So I don't know that the slider key will actually turn on the radio in OS/2.  I am pretty sure the slider key in the off position makes sure the radio is off, but sliding the switch on may just allow the software to turn the radio on/off.

But in any case I stil have the whitelist issue. It appears the radio/card I have installed doesn't have a Genmac driver, and the cards which do won't work in the laptop.

It also appears that some have modified the BIOS, but to do that on this laptop the BIOS chip has to be removed from the laptop and reprogrammed in a burner/programmer. It also looks from the forum that some have not been successful and ended up with a laptop that doesn't work.

Given the possibility that even if I successfully modify the BIOS to allow the radio to be installed, it still may not work in OS/2 because of the on/off issue. Given the risk and cost (e.g. have to buy an eprom programmer) of modifying the BIOS and the uncertainty of the on/off issue, I will stick with what I have.

Thanks for the advice. Godspeed to the wireless multimac programmers, whoever they are.

Unfortunately I have no idea what the PCI id is, since I could not get the machine to boot. WikiDev lists a bunch for this class of card, and I can't tell what the specific id is for this card.

The label on the card says Intel 512an_hmw
