Applications / Re: A touch Interface for OS/2
« on: January 11, 2015, 12:33:03 pm »
Thanks (once again) to the great work of Wim Brul the Touchscreen of the Sony Vaio Pro 13 is working !!
And this may work with some of the latest Sony Vaio Touch Laptops or Tabletts as well.

I will produce a Video later where one can see the Touch Interface as well.

for more Information just follow the link in the last message.

Best regards

Sigurd

Applications / Re: No word from Mensys/XEU - Alternatives?
« on: January 07, 2015, 10:40:46 am »
So, between the alternatives we have:
Alternative - Create an OS/2 Warp 4.52 Distro.

At least on paper this is the one and only chance to keep OS/2 going on. Until Mensys proves that black is white I see no more development or even things going on at Mensys, other than may be trying to satisfy/solve problems for customer they have and already purchased eCS.

If I remember correctly there have been posts here around that at the beginning of Arca Noae there have been negotations with Mensys in wich way to cooperate. Then Arca Noae started (fortunately!) their business and it seems to me that these negotations had lead to nowhere. That might lead to the conclusion that ecomstation is dead.

In practice
creating an own distro is doomed to failure, due to the license issues.

The only hope I have in this case is that Arca Noae may get an license agreement with IBM - if Arca Noae is interested to do so at all. And if I remeber correctly I have read more than once that they are not going to do such things.

Hardware / Re: Motherboard woes
« on: January 01, 2015, 02:39:49 am »
i do agree with siguard that for the end user a list of known supported hardware would be nice. appearantly you have 10 machine that work well. what is their make up? are they current (less than 1 year old)? i think stating who your real intended customer are would allow many sitting on the fence technically would be a good move on the part of serenity systems.

Sigurd is approach is nice in theory.

to Roderick
you have 50 units working well. great!! what are they?? just tell us so we can just go buy one. how hard is that?

Very interesting to read this - I am still - even if it seems outdated - of the opinion to support selected Hardware, especially regarding Laptops/Notebooks. For this one can build perfect Installation clones via DFSEE, I do have some with my Special OS/2 Edition (no parts of ecs except kernel 14.106SMP) for

- ThinkPad X41
- ThinkPad X200t (with Stylus, UMTS, SNAP, WLAN, LAN Support etc.)
- ThinkPad X230t (with Stylus, Touch, LAN Support - WLAN and Sound missing)
- Samsung Serie 7 Slate PC Tablet (with Stylus, Touch, LAN, Sound, USB Support - Sound a bit weak)
- Sony Vaio Pro 13 Core i7 Laptop (with USB, Panorama, QSINIT with 4GB RAM Disk (8GB total RAM)Support - WLAN and Sound missing)
- Maximum Warp PC (AMD 8 Core, Geforce 6600 PCIex16, SNAP (stable up to 4 cores)WLAN, LAN, Suround Sound Support, USB, SSD etc)

-> if I have new Hardware I am using my 2Gb sized Clone of the 8GB Partition of the Maximum Warp PC, changed there to Panorama Vesa Driver, the latest Arca Noae Drivers, select "no Network Card" and disable UNIAUD - this clone is booting ón almost every PC I tried with.

I am looking Forward to see the new UNIAUD and possible WLAN Intel Drviers from Arca Noae coming - this might solve the two most annoying Problems I do have on some of the Hardware mentioned above. Integrating These in my clone would give this a good Chance to work on my next Hardware platform target :-)

Programming / Replacing OS/2 parts

This might be interesting not only for Martin.

Hi Sigurd,

have you tried markexe as Roderick told us on the OS/2 user meeting in Cologne. I have done this with VLC, and it seems to me it work more stable.

markexe MPUNSAFE vlc.exe

Markexe is on eCS CD2  under \TOOLKIT\OS2TK45\BIN>markexe.exe

Hallo Klaus,

thanks, I tried it but it unfortunately has no effect allthough the file has been changed (please see picture). Will try another way :-)

There is another small utility: setproc, which simply takes the numeric identifier of the core with either ON/OFF parameter...since I run 5 cores here and occasionally need to disable all but one I simpy have a little cmd file created:

@echo off
setproc 5 4 3 2 off

I have an icon for the OFF/ON cmd files in my WarpCenter tray, so the convenience is literally a click-away.

Sigurd:
Regarding the execmode changes, if I read your schreenshot correctly, execmode did NOT actually alter the binary mode...did you mean it to do that, just give you the info on the file?

Hi,

I wanted to change the files using the -sp switch but I guess the message means that it checks the file but can not change it due to something "Bad header". So it stopped before it changed something. Do not know what to do next. Will try the -d switch later on.

I have got the xcenter (not ecenter) running and with this I can switch of the kernels (as shown in my videos before via OS/2 MCP SMP Monitor) off and on and vice versa as often as I like. If these are "really" off - I can not say but the CPU Monitor does allways show all the kernels I do have - those switched off using 0%. That is the difference to /MAXCPU=1 -> this is showing only one entry in the XCenter. Using all kernel and switch off three of them does show all kernels, but three of them at 0%. (Please verify at the screenshot I attached before).

I did notify that switching of the kernels via OS/2 MCP CPU Monitor (I am using this instead of the eCS one) leads to a less head produciton and the fan therefore calms down. While switching the kernels back on the heat comes back.

Software:
OS/2 Warp 4.52 MCP2 Merlin
Latest ACPI 3.22.06
OS/2 SMP Monitor
QSINIT Loader

I think I will try the setproc utility and report if there is any change.

Still wondering what breaks the -sp switch with execmode on vpc.exe ....

Hi Doug,

thanks, I just tried it, no success though. Please see attached Picture.

Do you have a clue what might went wrong?

And yes - Virtualbox is running with all cores so far.

Applications / Can I make Programs use only one kernel on an SMP System?
« on: December 02, 2014, 08:13:36 pm »
I think I have read about this before, but can not find something..

Is it possible to "tell" applications to use just one core on a SMP System?

Here VPC for OS/2 is the "problem" - it runs fine when I add the Switch /MAXCPU=1 in config.sys but crashes when all 4 kernels run (as expected).

So - is there a way to configure something in/with Virtual PC to just let it use one core even if the Switch above is not in config.sys?

Thanks in Advance,

Sigurd

Hi Martin,

thank you - yes - you can include the pictures. More will follow, but take some time due to some pressure of work on Thomas an me. But it will come.

Videos will not come - as we did not find the time and missed the right equipment to produce those - we hope to change this in 2015.

Article Discussions / Re: [Arca Noae] So, what would you like to see next?
« on: November 28, 2014, 09:43:52 am »
I would like to see next:

- Intel WLAN Drivers for modern chipsets
- UNIAUD Sound for modern chipsets
- Modified Panorama or preferred SNAP
- Dreaming - Bluetooth

Not so important to me (but I would like to see as well):
- USB 3.0 support (I do not know if this works on other Laptops as well, but the Sony Vaio Pro 13 I have is according to the specs "only" equipped with 2 USB 3.0 ports, in fact those are working in USB 2.0 mode with OS/2 Merlin as well because there is an USB EHCD controller on board - may be a fallback modus?)
- UEFI support (the Sony Vaio Pro 13 has the needed BIOS Settings for disabling Secure Boot and UEFI and choose Legacy boot, the same goes with the Lenovo X230T and my ASROCK 990FX Extreme 4 Mainboard - so I guess this is still possible for the most Laptops nad PC around - problems will occur on most of the Tablets (if one needs it))

Hi,

you can find some information about the upcoming OS/2 User meeting on Saturday in Cologne here:

https://translate.google.de/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.os2.org%2Fviewtopic.php%3Ff%3D4%26t%3D332%26start%3D25%23p2378&edit-text=

The event will be held almost in German as there has been almost no response from possible visitors from outside Germany or German speaking countries. If on Saturday someone will proof us wrong he/she is warmly welcome and we will find a solution for this then  ;)

There will be no "Live Camera" or something like this, but

- we will publish summarys, pictures and videos about the event and what happend in German and English after the event did take place

Thomas and me are really looking forward on Saturday!
